Fijian Foreign Minister Holds Talk With

China Delegation

Fijis Minister of Foreign Affairs

Ratu Inoke Kubuabola welcomed a
Chinese delegation led by the Vice
Mayor of Shaoxing Municipal People's
Government from the Peoples
Republic of China.
The delegation is in Fiji to sign a
Memorandum of Agreement between
the Shaoxing Municipal City and the
City of Suva.
This agreement will build a closer
relationship between the two cities
and direct investors and visitors from
his city and China as a whole to our
shores. He mentioned that his city has
a population of 5 million people and he
has been promoting Fiji to the citizens
of his city. They are now well aware of
Fiji now than in the past.
Ratu Inoke reiterated to the delegation the
important relationship between Fiji and
China and stressed that Fiji was grateful
to have a friend such as China who stood
beside her in good and bad times.
The Vice Mayor thanked Ratu Inoke
and agreed with the sentiments
expressed by the Minister of the strong
relations between the two countries.
He added that this relationship is evident
in the sense that the purpose of their
visit to Fiji is to sign a Memorandum
of Agreement between his city and
Suva. He thanked the Minister for his
assistance in allowing this agreement
to materialise.
The Vice Mayor also pointed out to the
Minister that he has been promoting
Fijian products in his city such as Fiji
Water, dalo, tuna and beer to name a few.

He also mentioned the US$10 million

piggery investment in Vakabaleya in
Navua which will start with a total
of 10,000 pigs and is expected to be
completed by the end of the year.
He also mentioned that other investors

were being eyed to also come to Fiji

and invest in the agriculture sector.
Minister Kubuabola thanked the Vice
Mayor for his efforts and also requested
for investors to be encouraged to also
invest in the Northern division as part

UK Advises Visitors On Political

Situation
The British government through
an advisory is urging its citizens to
exercise extreme caution when visiting
Fiji as the country nears elections.
British nationals are told to expect an
increase in political activity from all
parties, which may lead to increased
political tensions as Fiji goes through
an electoral process, which is the first,
after the 2006 military takeover by
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.
Elections will be held on September
17, 2014. Political parties are likely to
become more active in the lead-up to

elections, holding meetings and public

rallies.
You should avoid demonstrations,
street rallies and public gatherings,
the advisory says. Visitors should
monitor local developments and keep
away from political rallies and public
gatherings.
It adds that around 25,000 British
nationals visit Fiji every year and most
visits to Fiji are trouble-free however
they should take care when visiting
isolated locations, especially if they are
on their own.

by the FijiFirst Leader to join the party
and he accepted the invitation because
he agreed with the partys policies.
Commissioner Eastern Netani Rika

THE Fijian Elections Office has

released the provisional list of voters
for the 2014 General Election.
Supervisor of Elections Mohammed
Saneem said the release was in line with
the Electoral Decree, which required that
a voter could only vote at a polling station
that he or she had been assigned to.
"The provisional list that is being released
is a list based per venue and this list will
contain the name of the voter and the
name of the polling venue that the voter
has been assigned to," Mr Saneem said.
He said the full list would be released
after the close of the registration so that
the Elections Office had the final list of
registered voters.
"Registered voters can now check this
information and ascertain where they
have to vote.
"It is important that on September 17,
a voter will only be able to vote at a
polling station that he or she has been
assigned to.
"On September 17, since it is a
public holiday, we have utilized the
Department of Lands GIS software to
locate voters to a polling venue nearest

to the residential address provided to

us at the time of registration."
He said the provisional list would be
updated on a weekly basis.
Members of the public can also send
text messages using their Digicel and
Vodafone number, free of charge, to
check their voting details.
Mr Saneem said information would
also be placed on the Fijian Elections
Office website and voter information
centers and area information centers in
the coming days.
The list will also be available for use
for electoral purposes and will be sold
at $1500.
Voters can also call on the Elections
Office toll free line on 545 if they need
help.
How to check your
Polling venue:

International Events Impact

Commodities

OIL prices have come off their recent

peaks while coffee, coconut oil and
palm oil fell sharply over the month
to July, says a report released by the
Australia and New Zealand Banking
Group Ltd.
In its Pacific Monthly economic update
on commodity market developments,
the bank said copra, copper and silver
rallied while gold continued to trade in
tight ranges but ended the past 30 days
higher.
"Key events over the month that
moved prices include a dovish Federal
Reserve minutes, firmer China
purchasing managers' index (PMI)
figures, strong non-farm payrolls from
the US, a Portuguese bank missing debt
repayments and tensions dissipating in

the Middle East," ANZ said.

"Oil prices fell over the month with
political uncertainty in Iraq easing,
supply from Libya coming back online
and slightly weaker economic data
from Europe. Brent crude prices fell
from $US115 ($F212.44) to its present
$US107 ($F197.66) level.
"Gold prices remained in a generally
tight range as they have been for close
to a year. Overall price climbed slight
above 4 per cent over the past 30 days.
"India maintained its gold import duty
against market expectations, likely
easing demand from India."
It said they continued to expect a
year-end gold price target of $US1180
($F2179) per ounce.

LTA Proposes To Increase Speed

Limits On Some Allocated Roads

The Land Transport Authority will

propose that speed limits be increased
in some allocated roads in the Central/
Eastern division later this year.
LTA spokesperson Iliesa Sokia said two
months ago they implemented the trial
after government directed them to review
the current speed limit on four roads.
Sokia added that the roads identified
where the speed limit needs to be
increased include a portion of the Kings
Road from Mead Road to Wainibuku
Bridge, Fiji National University
junction to Rewa Bridge, Jerusalem
Road and Ratu Dovi Road from the

Centrepoint junction to Laqere market.

According to Sokia, the current speed
limit on these roads is 50 kilometres
however they will be proposing to
increase it to 60 kilometres.
He said a speed limit trial is underway
on these roads which will continue
till December this year, where they
will compile a report and submit
it to the government for their final
recommendation.
Sokia said LTA is monitoring and
doing some evaluation, assessment,
surveys in consultation with the police
and other relevant stakeholders.

FRA Used Up $200M By June

The Fiji Roads Authority has used up
89 per cent of their 2014 Budget on
improving roads and bridges around
the country.
FRA chief executive Neil Cook said
the authority used $200million to
grade unsealed roads, filled over
158,000 pot holes, and sealed road
pavement repairs, cleaned water
tables, installed new culvert pipes,
applying gravel to unsealed roads,
line markings, road reconstruction
and resealing of roads.
Since last month, the FRA has awarded
some contracts on rural road upgrading
through the rural roads programme.
For the Veisa Farm road, the project
has been awarded to Hotspring Hire

limited for the sum of $900,000 that

will see improvements to the 4.7km of
road.
In the North, the Namuavoivoi road
which should see the 23km upgraded
has been given to Hussains Plant Hire
for the sum of $2.4m and the Raravula
Farm road will be upgraded by A Khan
Hire for $1.1m, Cook said. Kashmir
Transport has also been awarded a
contract to upgrade Wailevu West
Coast and Kubulau Road with the
project valued at $4.1m.
The authority is also carrying out
ground investigations for bridge
replacements in Viti Levu, Vanua Levu
and Ovalau which was awarded to
Geotech Drilling International Limited.

Second ATR Here Soon

Domestic airline travellers can soon

expect yet another brand new plane
from Fiji Link.
Fiji Links ATR 42-600 aircraft will
be received in late August and will be
second new aircraft this year for the
recently rebranded subsidiary of Fiji
Airways.
The aircraft has been acquired under a
Finance Lease.
The 48-seater aircraft will be operated
between Suva, Nadi and Labasa.
Fiji Airways Group managing director/
chief executive, Stefan Pichler, said
the second ATR-42 is the next step in
the current fleet upgrade work being
undertaken for Fiji Link.
We have a robust plan to modernise
the Fiji Link fleet to more efficiently
serve the domestic market as well as
the South Pacific regional flying the
carrier does on behalf of Fiji Airways,
he said.
This incoming 600-series ATR 42 is

a step-up from the current 500-series

that Fiji Link operates.
Following the arrival of this brand new
aircraft along with another ATR 72600 for Fiji Link in December, the two
current ATR 42-500s will exit the fleet.
Mr Pichler said so overall, they will
significantly increase Fiji Link capacity
this year with state-of-the-art new ATR
aircraft.
The ATR 42-600 has considerably
more cocktail and other enhancements,
including higher efficiency and a lower
fuel burn compared to the ATR 42500s.
Our goal is to keep reducing fuel costs
as well as well our carbon footprint
by looking for more efficient aircraft
where possible, he said.
The ATR 42-600 will be an important
acquisition for us in that respect, as the
older ATR 42-500s exit the fleet.
The ATR fleet for Fiji Link are all
leased from aircraft lessors.

August 4 Voter Registration Deadline

THE Fijian Elections Office has announced

that voter registration will close on August 4.
This is also the date the Elections
Office anticipates President Ratu Epeli
Nailatikau to issue the Writ of Election.
Supervisor of Elections Mohammed
Saneem said no one would be registered
after the issuance of the Writ.
"We anticipate the writ to be issued
on August 4 and this means that voter

registration closes the same day," Mr

Saneem said.
"No person will be registered after
the writ is issued and, therefore, my
advice to any person who remains not
registered but is eligible to do so is to
register now before it's too late."
Mr Saneem also revealed that as of

A Fijian Hero's Tale

A FORMER Fiji citizen has been
nominated for the Pride of Australia
medal award for saving the life of a
neurologist who was involved in a
brutal hospital stabbing in Australia on
February 18 this year.
Apart from being a nominee for the
national award and the bravery award
by Victoria Police, Labasa-born Vinay
Dass, 43, was given a recognition
award by his employer, the Western
Health Hospital at Footscray,
Melbourne.
The award, and two nominations, strives
to recognise the hospital's equipment
technician, who with the assistance of
four others, helped save neurologist
Michael Wong's life that morning.
In an interview via electronic mail, Mr
Dass said he was at work at 7.30am and
was in his office when he heard some
commotion, and at the same time seeing
people running along the corridor.
He said he also ran out and when he
arrived at the hospital reception, he
saw the neurosurgeon on the floor
bleeding after being stabbed 14 times
by the assailant.
He said he picked up an A-frame and
yelled at the assailant to draw his
attention.
He said while he engaged the
assailant's attention, four other people
at the reception dragged Dr Wong to
the emergency area.

"I engaged him so that he would not try

to harm other people at the reception
area," Mr Dass said.
The former Australian Air Force
technician said he kept the assailant
engaged until the hospital security
arrived and further assisted them to
calm the man before police arrived and
arrested him.
In an interview with news agency,
Dr Wong, who was the head of the
neurosurgery at Western Hospital at
that time, said he would have bled
to death without those who rescued
him.
"They were very, very brave people,
it's bravery akin to a war situation. I'm
not permanently disabled, I'm back to
work. What they did was lifesaving,"
he told the news agency.
Dr Wong received stab wounds to
the back, arms, hands, legs, chest,
abdomen and head, and suffering a
punctured lung.
Proud sister Sarina Dass told the
reporter that his brother, who was
born in Labasa and grew up in Jittu
Estate, was always proud of his Fijian
background and his actions spoke
volume of this pride that inspired him
to help people and even strangers in
trouble.
Mr Dass is among five of his colleagues
who are being nominated for the Pride
of Australia medal.

Foreign Ministers Could Decide

On Fiji's Membership
The head of the Pacific Islands Forum
has suggested the region's foreign
ministers could be tasked with deciding
whether to lift the suspension of Fiji's
membership.
Speaking ahead of the Forum leaders'
summit in Palau, Secretary-General
Tuiloma Neroni Slade told the ABC
the Ministerial Contact Group could
monitor Fiji's elections in September
and then make a recommendation.
Forum members agreed at their
summit in Majuro last September that
they would revisit Fiji's suspension this
year. However, Mr Slade says they will
only do so after Fiji holds "free and fair
elections".
"Forum leaders meet once a year
and that's a long time to make a final
decision," he said.
"One way would be to task the

Ministerial Contact Group of six

foreign ministers - including the
foreign minister of Vanuatu - to
continue to monitor the election and
make a report on what they consider
to be the freeness and fairness of the
elections in Fiji."
The Forum suspended Fiji's interim
government in 2009 after it seized
power in a military coup.
In June, New Zealand Prime Minister
John Key flagged that he would discuss
Fiji's possible return to the Forum during
a visit to Samoa, Tonga and Niue.
However, Fiji's foreign minister, Ratu
Inoke Kubuabola, has previously
said Fiji wouldn't seek to renew its
membership unless Australia and New
Zealand were expelled as members.
Fiji's polls are due to held on September
17.

Under Fire
ENVI-Green Pacific Consultants
have refuted claims by residents and
environmental groups that Pacific
Building Solutions (PBS) was
not transparent when it sought an
environmental impact assessment on
Lot 1 Waibola, in Wailekutu, Lami.
The
Fiji
Environmental
Law
Association, residents of Waibola and
other groups have criticised the EIA
saying there was a lack of transparency
and public consultation given the
proposed size of the development
project and the conservation value of
Draunibota Bay.
Environment consultant Dr Paulo
Vanualailai, the man who conducted the
EIA, said PBS did not fully understand
the processes they had to follow when
it sought the EIA.
"I don't agree that PBS is being less
transparent. In fact, it was a confusion
of the processes to get their land
rezoned from residential to commercial
property," Dr Vanualailai said.
"The reason public awareness was
not carried out is because during the
time of assessment, from April to May
2011, detail engineering plans and
civil engineering works were not yet in
place."
Dr Vanualailai said only an artist's
impression was given in the earlier
plan, which was why he did not hold a
public consultation.
"I specifically held on to the public
awareness because of lack of
information. I didn't know that a
scheme plan was yet to be drafted,
let alone the detail civil engineering
works.
"I submitted the original EIA on the
basis that upon receiving the final plans
of the scheme plan and detail civil
engineering plan, then I shall carry out
the public awareness program."
"It was for this reason that only a
conditional approval was given for
the Waibola EIA by the director of
environment.
"That is why PBS went back to the
drawing board to correct its processes.
That is where we are right now."
PBS has refused further comments on
Waibola.

Hospitality Amazes Australian

Traveller

AUSTRALIAN Peter Thomas, who

walked for 142 kilometres from
Savusavu to Nabouwalu, believes Fiji
can teach the world how to take care of
and love people.
Known as "Walking Our World",
the man from the Land Down Under
completed the walk through Kubulau
and Wainunu districts last Saturday
and could not get over the people's
hospitality, generosity and warmth.
"This is my first trip to Fiji and I have
just been directed by the map on my
walk from Savusavu to Nabouwalu but
the care given to me by the villagers is
something you can never get in other
countries," Mr Thomas said.

"In Australia and New Zealand, maybe

just some people but here on Vanua
Levu, everyone was willing to take me
into their homes. I didn't have to worry
about which place to sleep in."
Mr Thomas described the long walk as
a tiring one and the rain along the way
created more challenges.
"But I managed and although there
were slippery roads and high hills, I got
through and reached Nabouwalu and
the same hospitality by the villagers was
given to me by the police. They are very
kind to allow me to stay with them in
the barracks and offered me food."
He traveled to Viti Levu where he
began his walk from Suva to Lautoka.

Ganging Up For The Elite

Old politicians are ganging up to give

power back to the elite; the discarded
Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), says
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.
He was speaking at Wainimakutu High
School, Namosi, where he was chief
guest at the opening of the Solar Project
funded by FIJI Water Foundation.
These politicians, he said, had
persuaded the other parties to support
them in restoring the GCC, which
rather than promoting democracy,
actually returned power to the elite.
While we have empowered ordinary
iTaukei by giving them the lease
monies from the land that is theirs for
all time, they want to restore the Great
Council of Chiefs and hand the money
back to them, he said.
These old politicians, he said, had reemerged to challenge his Governments
determination to bury the divisions of
the past, to create a more equal society
and take every Fijian forward.
He said they had reached into the old
bag of tricks they had always used
in previous elections, trying to sow
suspicion and attacked his vision of
the great future that lay ahead if they

stayed focus and united.

Their claim that iTaukei land is
threatened is a lie. Their claim that
Christianity is threatened is a lie. But
they continue to peddle these lies
at their meetings across the country
because essentially, they have nothing
else to offer.
He said while his Government held out
the vision of a clever country, these old
politicians treated the Fijian people
like fools.
While we tell the young people how
our free education policy opens up
the world of opportunity our own
generation never had, they want to
revive old arguments and rake over the
dead coals of the past.
He said these politicians from various
political parties were going to the
nation with a claim that simply beggars
belief, that having brought them to
their knees with their bitter disputes in
the past, they could all work together
now and into the future.
He said these politicians could not
work together in the past and said
How do they expect anyone to believe
they can work together now?

Declare All Currency

THE total value of currency declared
by travellers in the Boarder Currency
Reports (BCR) last year was
$22.1million compared with $14.6m in
2012.
For last year alone, 459 BCRs were
submitted to the Fiji Financial
Intelligence Unit compared with 477
in 2012.
The Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit
together with Fiji Revenue Customs
Authority (FRCA) have placed BCR
posters at the Nadi International
Airport, and there is more awareness
of the declaration requirements.
According to the 2013 FIU annual
report, failure to declare currency at
the border was an offence under the
Financial Transactions Reporting Act.
If convicted, FIU said, a person was
liable to a fine of about $60,000 or
imprisonment of a maximum of 10

years or both. It said there were 16

cases of persons brought before the
court for failing to declare currency
last year.
It added there were two cases under
investigations by police worth
$76,648.58.
"All travellers coming into Fiji or going
out of Fiji are required to declare if they
are carrying currency or negotiable
bearer instruments of $10,000 or more
(or its equivalent in foreign currency).
"Travellers are required to make
declaration in the first instance on the
arrival or departure cards and then fill
out the Boarder Currency Report form
which is available at all ports of entry
and exits in Fiji."
According to FIU, there were more
declarations made by outbound
travellers compared with inbound
travellers last year.

Get Registered, Keep Voter

Cards: Chaudhry

Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra

Chaudhry has called on the people to
go and register and keep their voter
registration card safely.
He told a party rally in Caubati, Nasinu,
where people needed to change their
address if they had moved from their
previous location.
The current Government has made
voting very complicated, they have
done it intentionally with only one day
for election, he claimed.
Before parties could transport the
voters to any polling station but now
we cant and if you cant make it than
you wont be able to vote.
The Government has said the electoral
rules were designed to prevent fraud
and make the September 17 election
credible.
Supervisor of Elections Mohammed
Saneem said parties that transported
voters to polling stations should not
carry any banners.
Mr Chaudhry said in these eight years,

what has happened in the country?

How the life has been and should we
give this Government another chance
or is it time for a change?
Because wherever we go, people
only speak about poverty, high cost of
living, low income and unemployment
rates are high.
FLP candidate nominee Anandra
Prasad said education was not free.
Some schools only charged $30 per
student.
But he said the cost of school uniforms,
shoes, books and other necessities was
more than the $30.
He called on the people to decide what
they wanted for their children, for their
future.
We dont want to see people in
poverty, we dont want to see people
suffering for basic food items, we
want all children to go to school, have
decent jobs and better lifestyles, Mr
Prasad said.
Think carefully and vote carefully.

A 35-year-old man convicted over the

last year has been sentenced to 16
years in jail by a high court in Suva.
Justice Paul Madigan said Samisoni
Rabaka deserved a lengthy sentence
having not shown any remorse when
he maintained in court that he did not

Justice Madigan said Rabaka also

breached the girl's trust. Rabaka will
serve a minimum term of 15 years
before he will be considered for parole.
The rape happened on February 5,

the rape the next day when she noticed

Director

Nemani

response to concerns by the Fijian
community in Tonga that about 250
members were without proper travel
documents.
Mr Vuniwaqa said the Department of
Immigration Fiji was willing to send an
immigration official to Tonga.
But he added the number of Fijians
who needed assistance would have to
be established first.
"There are several ways to go about
this. One is to get a contact point and
their passport renewals is sent across to
us. Secondly, an officer can go to Tonga

Tonga Fijian Community member
and former interim president of the
community Iliesa Tora said many
Fijians in Tonga wished to take part
in the general election but were
hindered by the absence of proper
documentation.
Mr Tora said many Fijians without
passports and travel documents were
also concerned about the hefty fines
they would pay if they were to leave
voluntarily.
"Now if they have to leave, they will
have to pay a fee of around $1500. The
only other option is for them to get new
passports and then have them reapply
for visas and so forth and then they
can get work here and stay on new visa
arrangements."

Krishna Datt Not In September

Poll

Veteran politician, Peoples Democratic

Party member Krishna Datt, will not be
contesting the September 17 general
election.
Mr Datt said: The thought of running
in the election had crossed my mind
several times but on balance I believe
that there are sufficient numbers of
people from the younger generation
who have the ability, capacity and
the will to contribute to the political
development of the country.
After 2006, I had made a promise to
invite a new generation of leaders to
the forefront and I believe we have
them now and we could have more of
them.
As one off the founding members of
the PDP, he said his interest had always
been to ensure that the party was
established and its manifesto launched.
Mr Datt said the party had a good
multi-racial base.
However, he said his decision did
not mean he had retired from politics

but rather he would be offering his

assistance where needed.
I have decided to move on to play
other roles if and when the opportunity
comes my way, I believe that I still
have a lot to offer and I am looking
forward to working with the leaders of
the future in a new rejuvenated Fiji,
Mr Datt said.
He also highlighted that the election
would be fought between SODELPA
and the FijiFirst party.
This, he said, was because the voting
people were polarised between the two
political parties.
However, the smaller parties are
likely to make an important impact on
the political scene, with the very good
prospect of making a contribution
in mediating on the extremes of the
political divide.
They could be holding the balance of
power giving a real opportunity for the
smaller parties to play a positive role in
reconciling opposing views, he said.

Kava Supplement Boosts Local

Economy

THE launch of a kava supplement drink

in Levuka will create employment
opportunities for the people of Ovalau.
South Pacific Elixirs Limited officially
launched Taki Mai yesterday with high
hopes that it would boost the kava
industry in Fiji.
Speaking at the launch, Prime
Minister Rear Admiral (Ret) Voreqe
Bainimarama said the establishment of
the factory and nursery created muchneeded employment in the highlands
and was also an innovative product
that added value to one of Fiji's most
famous crops - kava.
"Kava is one of our nation's cherished
crops and Ovalau is known as one of
Fiji's premier kava producing regions,"
he said.
"Education and awareness efforts will
help increase the quality of kava that

they supply to the markets, which I

believe will create a ripple effect to the
rest of the industry and open the door
for export opportunities."
He said government had given a grant
of more than $130,000 to the company.
"I'm looking forward to them moving
their entire operation in Fiji where the
final product is done in Fiji. There is
no doubt that my government will
provide them with the appropriate
initiative to do so." The Australian
Government through the market
development facility also collaborated
with the company for the supplement
production. The company's managing
director, Zane Yoshida, said extensive
local research was carried out to
identify suitable variety of kava plants
to produce the Taki Mai supplement
drink.

Schools Impress At Film Awards

VARIOUS schools and students were

awarded for their excellent short films
that portrayed social issues in Fiji.
About 10 schools participated in the
Kula Film for this year with students
displaying great cinematography,
acting and directing skills.
Films Fiji chairperson Shaenaz Voss
said it was the ninth year of the
awards and it had been an amazing
journey.
"The entries just get better and better
each year and the training provided by
the Southern Institute of Technology
from New Zealand has seen the films
submitted being the best we have ever
seen," Mrs Voss said.
"A big congratulation to all the
students that participated and entered

the competition, Film Fiji is very proud

of what you have achieved this year.
"This show would not have been
possible without the sponsors."
She said the film award was about
getting secondary schools to participate
in the competition.
"The films showcase exceptional
works from all the students that have
taken part this year."
Winners Mitesh Mudaliar, Ashfaaq
Khan and Rajnel Prasad walked away
with the open category first runner-up
awards for the short film Twisted.
Mr Khan said they did not put in a lot
of effort when directing the film.
The Fiji Airways art competition
winner was Sanjay Balsara who walked
away with a $1000 cheque.

Author Inks Plight Of Turtles

IN A bid to raise awareness about the
plight of turtles in Fiji, particularly
among young children, WWF South
Pacific has launched a book for children
based on turtles common in Fiji.
The book, titled Sisi's Big Day Out,
takes a look at the colourful, curious
and often dangerous life of a young
turtle named Sisi, who is growing up
amid the beautiful coral, contrasted
against the pollution from humans in
the ocean.
Authored by WWF South Pacific's
marine species co-ordinator Laitia
Tamata, the book features colourful
illustrations and informative insights
into the life of Sisi and her helpful
grandmother both of which
represent the five commonly found, yet
threatened, turtles in Fiji the green
turtle, hawksbill turtle, loggerhead,
leatherback and the olive ridley turtles.
"This book has stemmed from personally,

covering all the endangered species in

Fiji. So, apart from raising awareness
through scientific presentations and
community workshops, something we
have discovered is the importance of
targeting children," Mr Tamata said in
an interview.
"So we're using the characters in the
book to do that.
"This includes their lifespan and the
threats they face all in the form of
a storybook so kids can identify these
issues and learn from this at a younger
age."
He said an important part of the story,
among so many others, was when Sisi
almost swallowed a floating plastic bag
because she thought it was a jellyfish.
"This is a very simple book and it
basically takes us through what turtles
are feeling."
Plans are to get copies of the book into
schools in Fiji.

No More Coups Please: Youths

SODELPA youths in Kadavu are
hoping there will be no more coups in
the future. Nailoroloro Nagatalevu, 27,
of Tavuki said young people had left
the country seeking greener pastures
overseas because of the coups.
Youths in Kadavu still had reservations
about the situation, they said. He
was speaking during the Social
Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA)
meeting presided by the party leader
and Marama Roko Tui Dreketi Ro
Teimumu Kepa in Tavuki , Kadavu.
Mr Nagatalevu stated that though they
appreciated developments being done
by the Government of the day, they
were uncomfortable with the style of
governance.
Mr Nagatalevu holds a Diploma in
Building and Civil Aviation from the
Fiji Institute of Technology. He lost
his job with the Ministry of Works,
Transport and Public Utilities in
2012. He did not say why. He said he
had since found it difficult to regain
employment.
He shared that most youths in Kadavu
were either farmers, fishermen or
engaged in other forms of subsistence

farming. One of the biggest revenue

earners for us is to run private punts
as business opportunities where
we cart people and produce to and
from their destinations. The current
Government recently through MSAF,
had demanded that punt owners obtain
operating licences which required
registration and payment of fees as
punt owners and punt operators. This is
apart from requiring all vessels to have
flares and life jackets and restricting
the maximum number of passengers to
around seven per trip.
He said the increased costs had hit
hard the youths who operated punts
to carried passengers and cargo as a
living.
Also, some of us have paid for all the
necessary fees to MSAF officials at
the beginning of this year however we
are still awaiting our licences to arrive.
Sometimes when we traffic cargo or
people especially at Vunisea, we are
stopped and booked by Police who
question where our licences are.
Though we state that we have paid our
required fees and are still awaiting our
licences, we are still targeted, he said.

Fiji Suspends Code-Share Flight With Air Niugini

The Solomon Airlines has strongly
condemned the action of the Civil
Aviation Authority of Fiji for
suspending its code-share flight
with Air Niugini however the Fijian
government stresses that it is ready for
talks to break the impasse.
This came after the airlines current
Honiara-Nadi code share flights operated
by Air Niugini were suspended last week
forcing many passengers booked through
Solomon Airlines to miss their flights.
In a letter to the Solomon Airlines, Fijis
Permanent Secretary for Civil Aviation,
Sharvada Sharma stated that given the
breach of the Air Services Agreement
and the suspension of services to Fiji
by Solomon Airlines, any designated
airline of the Solomon Islands will not
be allowed to operate or sell services to
Fiji from the Solomon Islands.
Solomon Airlines CEO, Captain Ron
Sumsum said Fiji Airways has had
every opportunity to code share with
Air Niugini from Nadi to Port Moresby
but has decided not to participate.

He added its approach to this entire

situation can only be described as a
Bully Boy approach and one that they
do not intend taking too lightly.
Attorney-General and Minister for
Civil Aviation, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum,
said after the Solomons Government
banned two successive Fiji Airways
flights from Nadi to Honiara in breach
of our Air Services Agreement, the
decision was made to suspend all
Solomon Airlines flights until the
matter is resolved.
Sayed-Khaiyum explained that the
suspension includes selling seats on
airlines designated by Solomon Islands
as code share partners.
He said they regret the inconvenience
to the travelling public but this action
was triggered by Solomon Islands and
the responsibility lies with Honiara to
make the first move.
Sayed-Khaiyum reiterates that Fiji is
willing to hold discussions to break the
impasse, but he made Fijis conditions
very clear.

Inconsistent Evidence Clears Man

Of Rape

A high court in Suva has acquitted a

man charged with the rape of a woman
in Davuilevu Housing in 2012 because
of inconsistencies in evidence she
gave.
Justice Paul Madigan concurred with
the assessors who decided the evidence
came from complainant herself,
Mereseini Ralawa, when she gave
evidence that was inconsistent with
other statements she had made about
the alleged offence.
"The evidence given by the accused
was directly in contradiction of the
complainant's evidence and the sole
issue of consent then became a question
of credibility," Justice Madigan said.
"In such circumstances, the court must
give all due weight to the unainamous
opinion of the assessors who are
deemed to have common sense and be
wordly wise."
In giving evidence, Salawa, now
a mother of two, said the incident
happened on 30 August 2012 in
Davuilevu Housing at about 7pm.
She had met the accused, Pelamo
Raqio, at a shop while waiting for her
husband. They started talking during
which she told the accused that she
wanted to use the toilet.
The accused offered to take her to his
uncle's home, but the girl declined
when she saw a lot of people there.
They then walked to a driveway
where she relieved herself. She said
she chose not to go back to her home
to relieve herself because it was dark.
As she made her way back to the
shop, she said Raio started pulling
her and kicking her demanding sex.
He then pulled her to the ground and
raped her.
She managed to free herself and ran
back towards the direction of the shop.
He threatened her that if she reported
the rape to the police, he would report
her to her husband's father and told him

that they had been having sex for some

time. She said Raqio also threatened
to tell her father-in-law that she was a
prostitute from Nausori town. He also
talked about fleeing the country if she
reported the matter to police.
Ralawa said she told her husband about
the rape when they reached their home
after which her husband reported it to
police. She was medically examined the
day after. A medical report submitted in
court stated no injuries were found, but
there was a small tear on the floor of
her vagina. The report said it was fairly
recent and could be due to any forceful
trauma to the vagina. The medical
report concluded that the injury was
consistent with what she was told by
Ralawa.
Raqio also gave evidence and told
the court that he knew the victim and
they had been a couple till 2012. He
said that she told him that was having
problems with her husband who had
chased her back to her family place in
Lautoka. And that she only returned
because her father told her to return to
her husband. Raqio then told her that
she was welcomed to stay with him if
her husband did not want her back.
He also told the court about
accompanying the complainnant to
relieve herself. Raqio said it was then
that she told him that she wanted to
have sex with him again before her
husband came.
He suggested going to a nearby playing
ground so they could have some
privacy. He said that she agreed and
he had to return to the shop to get an
empty carton for her to lie on. She said
she did not make a sound and did not
yell out while they were having sex.
They then got dressed and walked back
towards the shop. He saw the husband
as he got off the bus. He said he noticed
that the couple seemed happy as they
made their way to their home.

Check Sliced Meat Pieces,

Consumer Council Warns

The Consumer Council of Fiji has

warned the public to check their meat
bags after using services of meat slicing
provided by some supermarkets.
The warning has come about after the
council received complaints from some
customers that they find that when they
buy whole chicken, the wings and the
thighs go missing.
Council Chief Executive Premila
Kumar has warned that if people are
missing out on scrumptious chicken
wings and thighs for dinner theyd
better give a chicken or any other meat
to be sliced at a supermarket a closer
look at the chopped meat packed inside
the shopping bag and check that they
have all the good pieces.
The Council believes that consumers
must take an active role to check the
chopped meat in the packed plastic
bags after having it sliced; they should
not hesitate or be embarrassed to
thoroughly check for the pieces.
The traders can also help by ensuring
that when their staffs slices meat, the
consumer is able to view it. We know
that while some supermarkets have the

slicing section in an open room, there are

others where staff takes the meat inside
another room to chop it. As a result,
consumers cannot view the process.
Meanwhile, the Council is also
advising consumers to be smart and
shop at supermarkets which do not
charge them money for slicing of
meat. Our market survey has shown
that only 2 supermarkets in Suva are
charging a dollar or two for slicing of
meat. These supermarkets put chicken
on specials and later charge money
for slicing offering no benefit to the
consumer. Consumers should ask
upfront whether there is any charge for
slicing before getting the meat sliced.
The council has highlighted that some
supermarkets that do not charge for
slicing meats are:New World, R B
Patel, Shop N Save, MH, Food for Less
and Rajendras Foodtown.
Amid rising cost of living, consumers
have to change their habit and make
conscious decisions by engaging in
comparative shopping, supermarkettrotting and going for alternatives to
save on their money.

Perfect Package
HOUSING Authority has the perfect
home loan package for its customers,
allowing them to build their dream
home with attractive incentives.
Through the government's housing
assistance grant (HAG), land-only
customers can tap into it when they opt
to take a home loan package from the
authority.
In turn, the authority says it will apply
to the Ministry of Housing on behalf of
the customer to be considered for the
$10,000 grant to construct their dream
home if it is their first home.
And customers will only be eligible
for the $10,000 if they build

their home. As part of the home

loan package, the authority says
customers will be allocated under the
authority's Toso Mai products, which
are targeted at customers earning
$50,000 per annum or less as joint
household income.
"Under the Toso Mai Dua home loan
package if a customer or either one
of the joint account holders earns
less than $25,000 per annum they
qualify for the attractive interest rate
of 3.95 per cent for the first 12 months
and then 4.95 per cent for the next 48
months, before reverting to the 7.5 per
cent variable interest rate."

Follow Guidelines
TERTIARY institutions wanting to
develop new programs will have to
first request permission from the Fiji
Higher Education Commission before
offering the courses to students.
Fiji Higher Education Commission
Professional Services Unit team leader
Eci Naisele said the applications from
institutions would undergo a rigorous
vetting process before being approved
or prohibited.
"For example, last year FNU (Fiji
National University) had a total of 277
programs offered and this year they
developed a few more programs," Mr
Nasele said.
"Right now, they can still do that but
once they are registered with us, they
cannot do that anymore. They have to
first ask permission from us.
"When they request for approval,
then we ask them questions like
is that program relevant for our

industries in Fiji; is it according to

the recommendation of the National
Planning unit of government?; if not,
then we are not going to approve their
request."
He said the commission was working
with FNU as they registered the
university with the commission.
Mr Naisele said international institutes
intending to set up their schools in Fiji
had to also follow strict guidelines.
"They used to go through the Ministry
of Education but now it's with us.
"We have a committee and full-time
officers who handle people that come
from overseas who want to establish
institutions in Fiji.
"They need to meet all of the relevant
laws to be able to establish institutions
in Fiji.
"They have to go through the
recognition process first then they'll go
through the registration process."

Proposed One Fiji Replies To

Objection

The ballot papers filled with numbers

and without names or logos will not
cause any confusion to voters during
election, says the registered officer of
the proposed One Fiji Party Sitiveni
Kalou.
The Ballot paper will not contain
party names, symbols, or even
candidate names, so there is no chance
of confusion under those factors.
This was part of the statement given to
the Supervisor of Elections yesterday
afternoon by the proposed party after
they received objection from FijiFirst.
Kalou said they would make sure that
they are clear in promoting their party
and propagation of its party candidates
and policies. As we are sure the
FijiFirst Campaign will be clear and
concise in its delivery as well.
Kalou on behalf of the proposed
party officials stated in his letter that
No political party has a monopoly
and should not be allowed to have
a monopoly of an idea, as ideas are
innovations in nation building which
should be encouraged and promoted.
Any number of political parties may
not have party in their names (if
they all perceive themselves more
as a movements, for example), just
as a number of parties do have them
most probably because they consider
themselves as a party first and foremost.
Any number of political parties may
have two words in their names; just
as a few have three words in theirs. In
fact, if a number of associations find
one word that reflects their reason for
being; then they should be permitted to
do so, Kalou stated.
He adds that any number of parties may
have their name as their logo if the logo
so derived represents and promotes
their reason for being.
One Fiji perfectly reflects our ideology
of the uniqueness and oneness as a
society and nation, and has nothing to
do or to be confused with those of the
objectors.
Kalou said the names were different
and had different meanings where
FijiFirst connotes or signifies that the
party puts Fiji first. First in the Oxford
dictionary means-Coming before all
others in time or order; earliest.
Whereas One Fiji connotes or signifies

the promotion of a single, unique,

focused, and united Fiji.
He said One in the Oxford dictionary
means A single person or thing; just
one as opposed to any more or to none
at all; single. He adds One and First
do not mean the same and cannot
possibly cause any confusion; First is
who came ahead of others, while One
is by itself and always will stand alone.
FijiFirst may be meant to connote
putting Fiji as a nation, or Fijians as a
people, first as they claim. But it ends
there. One Fiji is about the uniqueness
of Fiji and Fijians as well as their
oneness; how they came to be, how
they are, and how they should be as a
people, as a society, as a nation, Kalou
said.
He said One Fiji connotes how the
members see Fiji now and in the future;
the choice of words and construction
are deliberate and essential to the name
and The rainbow represents their break
from the past or the end of the old
ways of seeing and doing things, and
the promise and the seedling represents
the birth of the One Fiji movement and
realization of the promise.
The Party is only the vehicle for the
movement, hence the absence of the
word Party from the logo.
The acronyms and/or abbreviations
are different: The acronyms for One Fiji
are OFP. The acronyms for FijiFirst
is definitely not OFP He has also
highlighted that the symbol is the word
FijiFirst and a variant of the national
flag. Kalou also stated that their logo
is OneFiji which is a variation from
the rainbow and the budding flora. In
conclusion, the objection registered
with your office by FijiFirst should be
dismissed based on the argument and
response above; and the following:
(a) Similar objections made to the
FijiFirst registration petition were
dismissed by the Fijian Elections
Office, so precedence has already been
created by the Fijian Elections Office.
(b) The Proposed One Fiji Party
constitution states the official name of
the Proposed Party is One Fiji Party;
so on that fact alone the objection is in
error, and is addressing a non-issue; as
the official party name contains three
words and not two.

Fiji, Solomon Islands Airline

Dispute Worsens

A dispute between the national airlines

of Solomon Islands and Fiji can only
be resolved through the intervention of
the prime ministers of both countries,
the Association of South Pacific
Airlines says.
The dispute started earlier last month
when the Solomon Islands Civil Aviation
Authority refused a request from Fiji
Airways for extra flights to Honiara.
All flights between the two countries
have since been suspended.
In the latest move, Fiji has prevented
Papua New Guinea's national airline
Air Niugini from picking up Solomon
Airlines passengers at Nadi airport
under a code-sharing deal.
"We regret the inconvenience to the
travelling public but this action was
triggered by Solomon Islands and the
responsibility lies with Honiara to
make the first move," Fiji's Aviation
Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum told
the Fiji Times.
Meanwhile, the chief executive of
Solomon Airlines, Ron Sumsum, has
issued a statement in which he labels
Fiji a "bully boy" and a "threat to
Melanesian unity".
"Fiji has continued to espouse needing
a solution and agreement by pulling
out the big stick to belt us around the

head."
Those in Fiji and Solomon Islands
wanting to fly between the two
countries are now being forced to
travel via Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu
or Australia.
George Faktaufon, secretary-general
of the Association of South Pacific
Airlines, says currently "no one is
talking".
He says the relevant government
ministries have been unable to resolve
the dispute.
"There needs to be some dialogue
between the two leaders," he told Radio
Australia's Pacific Beat program.
"The direction must come from the
top."
Mr Faktaufon says it is the first time
services between two Pacific countries
have been severed.
The main aim of the Association of
South Pacific Airlines is to improve
co-operation and transport links within
the Pacific.
But Mr Faktaufon says the Association
is powerless in the dispute.
"We have no control over the bilaterals
and we have no real control over what
the airlines do."
"The resolution rests entirely on the
airlines and the governments."

Tourist Arrivals Improve For

Pacific Countries
TOURIST arrivals in the Pacific region
are slowly climbing higher while
remittances fell sharply in Samoa,
according to a report by the Australia

In the recent ANZ Pacific Monthly
economic report, the bank said visitor

and Tonga continued to edge up by
single digits while arrivals in Samoa
spiked to 12.6 per cent year-on-year
comparison.
"However, in Samoa remittances fell
sharply due to a decline in transfers

HE Ratu Epeli was accorded a
traditional Fijian ceremony of

Tonga's growth in tourist receipts eased
in May while remittances edged up.
"However, we noted remittances

credit and monetary aggregates

"In Fiji, broad money expanded by 15.5

Qarase Says High Debt Level

FORMER leader of the disbanded

SDL Party Laisenia Qarase says one
of the main issues people need to look
further into is the country's debt level,
which he claims has jumped to about
$5billion, also claiming that this figure
continues to increase.
This was communicated to the people
of Qauia during a campaign event last
week.
Mr Qarase claimed that economic
growth for the years 2007 to 2014 was
an average of 1.1 per cent of GDP.
"The drastic effect of this dismal growth
is reflected in the 30,000 young people
that have registered as unemployed and
there are no jobs available for them,"
Mr Qarase said.
"About 12,000 of this number hold
qualifications from the University of
the South Pacific and other tertiary

He claimed that poverty levels had
jumped from 32 per cent in 2006 to a
massive 50 per cent of the population

Man Kills Wife, 3 Children And

Himself In Maine, Police Say

A Maine father who was dealing with

financial problems killed his wife and
three children before killing himself,
police said Monday.
Detectives said 33-year-old Joel Smith
shot his family inside their apartment
about 11:30 p.m. Saturday with a
12-gauge shotgun. Twelve-year-old
Jason Montez and 7-year-old Noah
Montez were shot to death in their
separate bedrooms, and 35-year-old
Heather Smith and 4-year-old Lily
Smith were shot in the parents' bed.
Joel Smith's body was found on the
floor nearby, the gun by his side.
Police said no suicide note was found,
but investigators said the wife had told a
family friend the night of the shooting that
Joel Smith recently had threatened suicide.
The friend later contacted an apartment
complex worker to express concerns
about the family's well-being, leading to
the grisly discovery, investigators said.
The family had domestic issues
and financial problems, said Sgt.
Christopher Harriman, a state police
detective.
The family had moved from Arizona
because of the sour economy, said Joel
Smith's mother, Jerys Caruthers-Thorpe,
of Scottsdale, Arizona. Heather Smith
also was getting help for substance
abuse, Caruthers-Thorpe said.
"I know something had to have snapped
because Joel never would have done
that in his right mind," she said.

The media reported that the family's

neighbors in the town of Saco,
approximately 10 miles south of Portland,
heard a sound like "firecrackers" at
approximately 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
Another neighbor told the paper that
she had seen the father drive away from
the apartment Sunday morning before
returning a short time later.
"I still don't want to believe it," said
Heather Nason, who used to babysit the
three children. "I love those children
like they were my own."
Neighbors described the father as well
known in the apartment complex along
the Saco River because he was one of
the maintenance workers.
They also described a friendly family
whose children were part of a group
of neighborhood kids who constantly
rode their bikes or played tag and other
games in a community that residents
described as safe.
"The kids were great. They were just
happy kids, and it's just a huge shock,"
said Nason, who with her husband Dellas
placed flowers outside the apartment on
Sunday. As for the parents, "they'd take
the shirt off their back for you," she said.
The droves of children who usually
circle the complex were all inside
Sunday evening, replaced by concerned
adults watching the police.
Down the street, Vin Savage watched
with a stunned look on his face. "This is
a tragedy," he said. "It's mind-boggling."

Unemployed To Be Forced To Apply For 40 Jobs A Month As Part Of

$5 Billion Dole Overhaul
Jobseekers may be forced to apply for
40 jobs a month as the Government
renews its push to move people off
welfare.
The Federal Government has unveiled
a $5.1 billion jobs placement program
and an expansion of the Work for the
Dole Scheme.
The draft employment and welfare
changes will force unemployed
Australians to apply for 40 jobs each
month in order to qualify for benefits.
"It's most important that job seekers
look for work." Assistant Employment
Minister Luke Hartsuyker said.
"It is absolutely obvious that if you are
sitting at home not looking for work,
you are unlikely to get a job."
Mr Hartsuyker says there should be an
expectation that job seekers should be
actively looking for work if they are
receiving benefits.
Under the proposed overhaul, the
unemployed will be expected to apply
for at least 40 positions each month.
"There are training options available
under this job service model, but a
job seeker's primary responsibility is
searching for that all important job,"
Mr Hartsuyker said.
But the Federal Opposition says
businesses will receive a deluge of

fake job applications because of the

rule changes.
"Business does not need a deluge of
applications just so a young jobseeker
can say that he or she has fulfilled their
obligations. Of course we want to see
a genuine search for work," Labor's
employment spokesman Brendan
O'Connor said.
Mr Hartsuyker says the changes will
cut red tape and offer incentives for
people to move off the dole.
There will also be a new wage subsidy
for employers who take on long-term
unemployed job seekers.
"What we want to do is to motivate job
seekers to leave no stone unturned in
the pursuit of a job," he said.
"We are putting in place an employment
services system that will efficiently
and effectively assist those job seekers
in that job search."
Under the proposed changes, fit and
healthy job seekers aged under 30 will
have to sign up for 25 hours of work for
the dole for at least half of each year.
Those aged between 30 and 50, or who
are under 30 and have limited physical
capacity to work, will be expected to
do 15 hours of work for the dole every
six months.
Mr Hartsuyker says work for the dole

gives jobseekers the opportunity to

contribute to the community, while
learning new skills.
"Many employers are telling me that
many young job seekers in particular are
presenting at the gates of their business
without the necessary skills they need to
get by in the workforce," he said.
"Simple skills such as turning up on
time, being appropriately presented,
being able to get on with workmates."
Critics say there is little evidence that
work for the dole helps the long-term
unemployed to find work.
Activist and social researcher Eva Cox
says the various incarnations of work
for the dole since it was first introduced
by the Howard government in 1998
have done little to help unemployed
find work.
"The evidence from the experimental
one that they ran about a decade ago
was it actually interfered with their
time for looking for work, so they
ended up with fewer jobs than those
not forced onto the work for the dole
program," she said.
She says there is a stigma attached to
work for the dole schemes.
"I just think most employers would be
put off by the fact that you have come
from something called work for the

dole. Most the jobs they do are, to put

it mildly, crap jobs" she said.
Mr Hartsuyker says that view is based
on old research.
"The information I get is that job seekers
who participate in work for the dole find
it a rewarding experience, an experience
that often leads directly to a job. An
experience that gives them a reason to get
out of bed in the morning. Many people
who are without a job are facing despair."
The Greens say this is not the right
approach to getting people back to
work.
Greens leader Christine Milne says
the Newstart Allowance should be
increased by $50 a week so jobseekers
have enough money to be able "to eat,
clothe themselves and be in a jobsready position."
"I just can't help but think that people
sitting in Canberra, on a deck chair
outside smoking a cigar, telling a
young unemployed person in Burnie,
Tasmania, 'You apply for 40 jobs'...
Where? Then Eric Abetz telling them
'Go to Melbourne and get a job'. Where
are they going to live?"
The proposed new arrangements have
been set out in tender documents for the
government contract with employment
service providers.

Dirty Undies Spoiled Bomb

Plot

A MAN who tried to blow up a

transatlantic flight by detonating
explosives in his underpants failed
because explosives had become
degraded after he wore the same
underwear for two weeks, it has been
claimed.
Known as the underwear bomber
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was
caught trying to blow up a plane on
Christmas Day in 2009 en route to the
US from Amsterdam.
The plane made an emergency landing
in Detroit after the bomb failed to go
off, instead causing a fire which left
Abdulmutallab with burns to his groin.
US officials traced the bomb plot to al
Qaeda and at his trial the 25-year-old

Nigerian called the bomb a blessed

weapon to avenge the mistreatment of
Muslims.
John Pistole, head of the Transportation
Security Administration (TSA), told
the Aspen Security Forum this week
that the explosive device failed because
of the length of time Abdulmutallab
wore his underpants.
Pistole said The bomber had had the
device with him for over two weeks.
Asked if this meant the bomb had
become damp, he replied: Lets say it
was degraded.
After the botched explosion passengers
and crew members were able to restrain
Abdulmutallab and put out the fire on
the Northwest flight.

Hong Kong National Jailed For 10

Years For Importing Drugs

A Hong Kong national has been

jailed for 10 years for importing
methamphetamine worth an estimated
$1 million in a statue.
Ka Po Ching, 25, was sentenced at
Auckland District Court after pleading
guilty to two charges of importing the
class-A drug.
She will have to serve at least four
years before being deported, Customs
said.
On January 3, a foot-high Chinese
warrior statue in a glass case arrived by
courier from Hong Kong.
The glass case did not save it from
closer inspection by Customs officers
who found 993g of methamphetamine,
with a street value of about $1 million,
hidden inside.
Customs
investigations
manager
Maurice O'Brien said criminals were

creative in their attempts to bring

drugs into the country but authorities
would not be deterred by elaborate
presentation and delivery methods.
The package and other offending were
subsequently linked to Ching who had
arrived in New Zealand a week before
the statue.
Customs arrested her at a central city
apartment she was renting.
Mr O'Brien said it was not uncommon
for syndicates to recruit young people
from overseas and pay for them to travel
to and reside in New Zealand solely to
"catch" and redeliver illicit drugs.
"The public should be aware that such
criminals could be renting properties
or apartments solely to have packages
delivered to that address, or asking
others to receive a package on their
behalf," he said.

in Saturday's violence, when police

Reports say the clashes began the
morning after local Muslims protested
to the Sikhs, who reportedly started
some construction on the disputed site.
Both Muslims and Sikhs claim
ownership of the land.
Last September, 43 people died in
religious clashes between Hindus and
Muslims in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar
Pradesh.
The clashes were sparked by the killing
of three men after they protested
against the alleged harassment of a
local woman.
Uttar Pradesh experienced some of the
worst religious clashes in India after
a Hindu mob razed the 16th Century
Babri Mosque in the holy city of
Ayodhya in 1992.
This prompted nationwide rioting
between Hindus and Muslims in which
more than 2,000 people died.

Islamic Mob Burns To Death An

A MOB burned to death a woman

member of a religious sect and two of
her granddaughters and burned down
several homes after a sect member
was accused of posting blasphemous
material on Facebook.
Police in Pakistan said the homes and
the dead, which included a seven-yearold girl and her baby sister, belonged
to the minority Ahmadi Muslims in the
countrys east. Nine other people were
also badly burned, The International
News reported.
The Ahmadiyya Islamic religious
movement, which believes in a prophet
after Mohammed, consider themselves
Muslims but a 1984 Pakistani law
declared them non-Muslims and many
Pakistanis consider them heretics.
Police official Zeeshan Siddiqi said
the rioting in the city of Gujranwala,
220km southeast of the capital,
Islamabad, erupted late Sunday after
claims that an Ahmadi had posted a
blasphemous photo of the Kaaba

the cube-shaped structure in the Grand

Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, that
observant Muslims around the world
face in prayer five times a day.
The photo allegedly contained nudity.
Later, a crowd of 150 people came
to the police station demanding the
registration of a blasphemy case
against the accused, a police officer,
who declined to be identified, told
Reuters.
As police were negotiating with the
crowd, another mob attacked and started
burning the houses of Ahmadis.
The youth accused of making the
Facebook post had not been injured, he
said.
Siddiqi said the victims died of
suffocation and that another woman
miscarried during the riots and was in
hospital.
Like other Pakistani minorities such as
Christians, Hindu and Sikhs, Ahmadis
have long been targeted by Islamic
extremists.

Authorities in India's Uttar Pradesh

state have relaxed a curfew in the city
of Saharanpur after clashes between
Sikhs and Muslims left three people
dead and 20 others injured.
The police said 38 people have been
arrested in the connection with the
incident.
The violence began early last Saturday
after Sikhs started building on land
which Muslims claim belongs to them.
Communal fighting between Sikhs and
Muslims is rare in India.
"The situation is moving toward
normal, and the situation is under
control. There has been no fresh
violence. We have decided to relax
the ongoing curfew today," senior
Saharanpur official Sandhya Tewari
told the BBC Hindi on Monday.
She said the curfew had been eased for
eight hours in two phases beginning
from 10:00 local time (04:30 GMT).
Authorities said 22 shops and 15

North Texas man had been arrested and

charged with sending over 500 letters
containing a white powder to schools,
government offices, day care centers,
and other locations across the U.S. and
around the world.
Hong Minh Truong, 66, of Rowlett,
Tex., made an initial appearance in
federal court in Dallas, where he was
charged with false information and
hoaxes. A judge ordered that Truong
be remanded until a detention hearing
scheduled for August 4.
A federal complaint seen by KDFWTV alleges that Truong began sending
the letters in December of 2008. The
document claims that Truong would

send between 10 and 40 letters at a time.

The letters contained terroristic threats
and in the case of all but two batches,
a white powder that resembled anthrax.
One letter promised that its sender
would "Hijack airplane from [Dallas's]
Love Field airport ... to hit NASA center
or Empire [State] Building." In another,
the sender said he would "Chop, slice,
dice and mash body of leeches and put
them in food store, let people eat."
"While it was determined that the
mailings did not contain toxins or
poisons, each incident required a field
screening of the letter's contents, which
cost taxpayer dollars and diverted first
responder resources," Diego Rodriguez,
special agent in charge of the FBI's

Dallas office, said in a statement.

The hoax letters were mailed to cities
across the U.S. and to U.S. Embassies
abroad. Most recently, some letters
were mailed to hotels in the vicinity of
this year's Super Bowl in New Jersey.
Investigators focused on Truong after
an IP address associated with him was
identified after 28 public schools in
Boston received letters in June 2013,
according to the complaint. KDFW
reported that law enforcement officials
had tracked Truong to a post office in the
town of Garland, where letters he sent
had the same envelope, position of the
stamp, and font used in the hoax letters.
If convicted, Truong faces up to five
years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Japanese Schoolgirl Arrested

For Murdering, Dismembering
Classmate
A 15-year-old Japanese schoolgirl has
been arrested on suspicion of murdering
a classmate and dismembering her
body, local media have reported.
The suspect, whose name was not
released as she is a minor, has admitted
to strangling the victim and severing
her head and left hand, according to the
Kyodo news agency.
She allegedly delivered blows to the
head of 15-year-old Aiwa Matsuo with
a metal instrument before strangling
her in the city of Sasebo, in Nagasaki
Prefecture, southwest Japan.
The victim's body was found on a bed
in the suspect's apartment early on
Sunday and investigators discovered
tools nearby, reports said.
The suspect, who lived away from her
parents though in the same city, told
police she acted alone in the grisly
killing, Kyodo added.
Matsuo had reportedly gone out to

meet friends on Saturday afternoon,

but her parents notified the police when
she failed to return home at night.
The two girls graduated from the same
junior high school.
Violent crime is still relatively rare in Japan
but several high-profile cases in recent
years have heightened public concern.
The city of Sasebo made headlines
in 2004 when a primary schoolgirl
stabbed her classmate to death.
In 2008, a man went on a stabbing
rampage in a crowded Tokyo shopping
street, killing seven people and
wounding a dozen others.
That incident came seven years to the
day after a knife-wielding janitor killed
eight primary school children, leaving
the nation in shock.
In 1997 a 14-year-old was arrested for
the murder of two schoolchildren.
The head of one of the victims was left
in front of his school gates.

Kansas Baby Dies After Being

Left In Hot Car

A foster parent has been arrested on

child endangerment charges after
police said he left a 10-month-old girl
he planned to adopt inside a sweltering
vehicle outside his Wichita, Kansas.
The man, identified only as a 29-yearold man, picked up the girl and another
5-year-old foster child from a babysitter,
but left the baby strapped in a car seat
while it was 90 degrees outside, said Lt.
Todd Ojile, the commander of the Wichita
Police Department's Homicide Bureau.
The man called 911 around 6:40 p.m.,
and police later determined that the
baby had been trapped in the car for
nearly 2 1/2 hours, Ojile said. The child
was pronounced dead a short time later,
though an official cause of death has yet
to be determined, Ojile said.
The 29-year-old was arrested on suspicion
of aggravated child endangerment, Ojile
said. Police will present their case to the
Sedgwick County district attorney next
week and determine if criminal charges
will be filed.
The suspect and another 26-year-old
man had six children in their custody.
They are the parents of a 5-year-old
and a 7-year-old, and are the foster
parents of the victim, a 3-year-old,

another 5-year-old and an 18-year-old,

Ojile said.
The parents gained custody of the
10-month-old girl last October and
were planning to adopt her, Ojile
said. The 5-year-old and 7-year-old
who were at the family's home have
now been placed in police protective
custody, according to Ojile.
The deaths of children left in sweltering
cars has gained national attention
this summer after a Georgia man was
charged with felony murder in a bizarre
case in which his son died after being
left in a car all day.
Cobb County prosecutors later said
the man was living a double life,
constantly "sexting" women besides
his wife and that he wanted to be free
of the responsibility of parenting.
Eighteen children have died of heat
stroke this year after being left in hot
cars, according to Kids and Cars, a
Kansas-based child safety group. Ojile
believed it was the first case of a child
dying after being left in a hot car in
Wichita's history.
Ive got a couple of homicide detectives
been here 22 years and theyve never
remembered one," he said.

Body Of Young Stowaway Found

On US Military Plane After Trip
To Africa

The US military has found the body

of an adolescent male trapped in a
compartment above the landing gear of a
C-130 aircraft following a trip to Africa.
The body was found at Ramstein Air
Base in Germany during a routine postflight maintenance inspection on Sunday.
The Pentagon's press secretary, Navy
Rear Admiral John Kirby, said the
plane travelled from Germany to
Senegal, Mali, Chad, Tunisia and
Sicily before landing in Ramstein on a
trip that lasted just over a week.
"At this point it is unknown where or
when the deceased entered the landing
gear wheel well," he said, describing the
apparent stowaway as "an adolescent
black male, possibly of African origin".
As concerns swell over an outbreak of

the deadly Ebola virus in several African

countries, the military also confirmed the
body has been tested for communicable
diseases. Those tests came up negative.
"The cause of death, as well as the
other circumstances surrounding this
incident, remains under investigation,"
Rear Admiral Kirby said, adding the
body had been taken to a German
facility for an autopsy.
He acknowledged that airfield security
would be examined during the investigation,
but stressed US military C-130s often land
in remote locations around the world.
"The aircraft is a rugged aircraft designed
to operate in austere locations. It
shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody
that security at some of these fields is not
going to be at the same level," he said.

Fraser Health Stroke Patients Face Less Than Ideal Care: Report
Fraser Health hospitals are diverting
or transferring stroke patients to
Vancouver hospitals, creating less
than ideal care, according to an
external report prepared for the
provincial government.
This is despite the fact two hospitals
Royal Columbian and Surrey Memorial
are designated stroke sites and have
stroke specialists including stroke
neurologists and other experts on
staff, the review found.
Rapid care is key in the treatment of
stroke patients since a special class
of drugs called thrombolytics may be
used to break up blood clots in the
brain that cause ischemic strokes. But
they must be administered within 4
hours from the onset of symptoms to
be potentially effective.
So when every minute counts, those
in the Fraser Health region who are
transported to Vancouver hospitals
instead of their nearest local facility
face critical time delays, the Fraser
Health Review report states.
A Fraser Health medical director
downplayed the criticisms in the
report on Tuesday, saying steps
have been taken to address many of
the concerns since the review was
conducted, although he acknowledged
some patients are still transferred to
Vancouver.
I cant change whats written there ...
and its not a question of disputing it,
said Dr. Dave Williams, Fraser Healths
program medical director of medicine.
But we do use thrombolytics and
patients are receiving the best stroke
care, whether they go to Royal
Columbian or Surrey.
The Fraser Health Review, ordered
by Health Minister Terry Lake last
year, was released earlier this month.
It flagged numerous areas of concern
in the region, including adverse events
suffered by patients in hospital and an
over-reliance on acute care hospital
beds. When it was released, Lake
announced an injection of $60 million
more over the next two years, on top of
the $3.1 billion Fraser Health already

Patients battle time delays if transferred to Vancouver for treatment

receives from the government annually.
The report says the transfer of patients
to Vancouver General Hospital from
Fraser Health facilities including
Surrey Memorial also has a negative
impact on ambulance resources and
patient volume at VGH.
This is not good patient care as it
introduces undue time delays to a
treatment that is time sensitive. As
well, it impacts (ambulance) resources
and it impacts volumes at VGH, it
says.
On the issue of stroke, the report also
identified these problems:
Royal Columbian Hospital is
a designated stroke site, but their
emergency (department) is resistant to
accepting further volumes given their
current capacity issues.
At Surrey Memorial, the emergency
department and neurology have not
embraced or implemented the use of
thrombolytics.
Thrombolytics specifically a drug
known as tissue plasminogen activator
(TPA) were first approved for use
in Canada in 1999. Since then, various
advocacy organizations including
the Heart and Stroke Foundation and
Canadian Stroke Network have been
agitating for greater awareness of the
time is brain messaging, improved
use of TPA and the need for designated
stroke centres.
Yet the Fraser Health Review report
says even hospitals designated as
stroke sites Royal Columbian,
Surrey Memorial and Abbotsford
Regional hospitals are diverting
or transferring stroke patients to
Vancouver.
Fraser Health has not been successful
in implementing consistent use of
thrombolytics in the emergency
departments of designated stroke sites
... As a result, they have not been fully
able to implement ambulance bypass
to designated stroke sites.
Williams said he thinks the report was
based on outdated information since,
in the past year, aggressive efforts
have been made to improve stroke care

across the region. The report looked at

hospital visits in 2012/13.
He believes the report failed to consider
efforts such as the hiring of new stroke
neurologists, which helps hospitals
like RCH provide 24/7 stroke care and
consistently offer thrombolytics.
In the case of Royal Columbian, an
American stroke neurologist was hired
in the past month, giving the hospital
two such subspecialists in addition
to five other neurologists. It plans to
recruit another three, he said.
Williams didnt deny that ambulances
transport some patients to VGH from
areas like Langley and Delta. He said
its part of a historical pattern based on
the fact that VGH is a centre of stroke
expertise.
But Williams said that as Fraser Health
builds capacity to care for such patients,
they will eventually all be treated in the
region in which they live.
Nearly 7,000 B.C. patients are admitted
to hospitals each year with strokes,
including nearly 3,000 in Fraser Health.
Most of them suffered ischemic strokes
as opposed to hemorrhagic.
Thrombolytic drugs are given to
patients in the acute stage of an
ischemic stroke after a CT scan has
shown it is probably safe to do so.
Williams said only 250 Fraser Health
ischemic stroke patients fit the criteria
last year for receiving a thrombolytic
drug, and approximately 135 such
patients were transferred to VGH. He
said this number will be far lower this
year.
The report noted the number of stroke
neurologists is very skewed toward
the western end of the Lower Mainland
(Vancouver Coastal). Williams said
there are more than 50 neurologists
in the Vancouver area, while there
are only 14 in the much bigger Fraser
region.
You do the math, he said, referring
to the fact that as the most-populated,
fastest-growing part of Metro, Fraser
Health has to catch up. Yes, it is a
work in progress.
He said while there is a natural

inclination to feel defensive when

presented with such a hard-hitting
report, we are learning from it. We
need to be more aggressive in getting
patients access to TPA.
Part of the solution lies with public
education, since only a third of stroke
patients get to hospital fast enough to
be considered for TPA.
Dr. Devin Harris, a Kelowna emergency
doctor who is medical adviser to Stroke
Services BC, was one of several coauthors of the report.
He praised Fraser Health leaders such
as Dr. Andrew Dawson for starting to
make significant strides in the right
direction. And he said patient transfers
are not necessarily a bad thing; its
always better to treat patients in
a hospital with lots of experience
handling strokes rather than in lowvolume community hospitals lacking
expertise.
Harris said Fraser Health has one of
the best stroke rehabilitation programs
in the province but there is still room
for improvement when it comes to
increasing the use of thrombolytics.
Told that Williams had said most
eligible patients will now be receiving
the treatment, Harris said: I would be
excited, optimistic, hopeful and happy
if that was the case.
He said sometime later this year, the
public will have access to a stroke report
card so they can see how hospitals
compare. The provincial initiative,
based on data that has been collected
but not yet publicly accessible, is a
collaboration between the BC Patient
Safety and Quality Council, Ministry
of Health, Stroke Services BC and
health authorities.
Hospitals will be required to measure
and report the proportion of patients
who die in hospital after a diagnosis of
ischemic stroke. They will also have
to measure and report the percentage
discharged to their original place of
residence, the percentage discharged
to long-term care facility or nursing
homes, and the proportion who
received acute thrombolytic therapy.

Is Canada Prepared To Handle A

Potential Ebola Outbreak?

As fears grow over an Ebola outbreak in

West Africa, one leading health expert
says Canada is prepared to prevent the
spread of the deadly disease in North
America, should it pose a threat beyond
Africa.
As some American aid groups pull
their workers out of West Africa amid a
recent Ebola outbreak that has claimed
the lives of more than 670 people,
officials in the U.K. held an emergency
meeting Wednesday to address what
the British government called a
serious threat.
Dr. Keith Martin, executive director
for the Consortium of Universities
for Global Health, says while some
50 countries are now in the midst
of developing networks aimed at
responding to deadly bugs such
as Ebola, Canada already has an
excellent response system in place.
But theres a lot more to do, in a lot
more countries, Martin said in an
interview on CTVs News Channel
Wednesday.
Martin said the response to the SARS
crisis in 2003 prompted a more
unified approach to global infectious
disease control. SARS -- severe
acute respiratory syndrome -- spread
from China to various regions of the
world, including Canada. Many health
agencies were blindsided by the deadly
disease, which killed dozens of people

and prompted travel advisories from

the World Health Organization.
We lost a lot of money globally on
SARS by not being prepared, Martin
said.
Prior to SARS, Martin said, public
health agencies kept information
private, and there was no proper
mechanism for detecting bad bugs
like Ebola. He said public health
agencies, and organizations like the
Centres for Disease Control, now take
a more unified approach.
Theyre starting to collaborate to
develop a surveillance mechanism
where we can identify bad bugs
when they happen, and develop
the appropriate response and the
international warning mechanism
thats necessary to prevent such a bug
from actually expanding and killing a
lot more people, Martin said.
As a precautionary response to the
Ebola threat in Africa, some airlines
are cancelling flights to and from areas
where there is a higher concentration
of Ebola cases. But Martin said the
deadly bug is actually fairly difficult to
contract, since it requires contact with
bodily fluids infected with the bug.
Unless youre coming in close contact
with the body secretions of (infected)
animals or somebody who has died
or is infected with Ebola, youre not
going to get Ebola, Martin said.

Surrey Celebrates the Opening of

Surrey residents celebrated of the

opening of West Newton Community
Park, a new 3.5 hectare community
space featuring a playground, walking
loops, park shelters, and Surreys first
cricket field with natural grass wickets.
The construction of this park marks one
of the final projects of the $700 million
Build Surrey Program with a total of
$2.8 million invested in its design and
construction.
West Newton Community Park has
been developed to meet the growing
needs of the community," said Mayor
Dianne Watts. "The new amenities
will ensure residents will have ample
opportunity for social, recreational,
and fitness activities.
Cricket is a very popular sport in

Surrey; it has the second-highest

number of registered cricketers in
Canada, after Toronto. The natural
grass wickets, field house, and on-site
parking facilities make this site suitable
for tournament play, and therefore
is a potential regional sport tourism
destination.
West Newton Community Park is
a great addition to the community
of Newton, said Councillor Linda
Hepner, Chair of the Parks, Recreation
and Sports Tourism Committee.
Residents of all ages will enjoy its
beautiful amenities, and given the
popularity of cricket both in Surrey
and internationally, it will also serve
as a unique sports tourism destination
with considerable economic benefits.

Amputee Charged After Double

Amputee Stabbed Outside Hotel

A 28-year-old double amputees throat

was slashed and he was stabbed in the
chest early Wednesday in a fight with
another amputee outside the Embassy
Hotel and Suites.
Police said two men, both Libyans,
were in Ottawa for prosthetics
treatment. Police said they were called
at around 1:20 a.m. to the hotel at 25
Cartier St.
They said the victim was fighting with
an acquaintance before he was stabbed.
A 21-year-old man was arrested two
hours later and police said there were
no additional suspects.
Police said the victim was initially in
critical condition when he was taken to
hospital. They credited quick response
by paramedics and treatment in hospital
for the mans condition later improving
to stable.
In the morning, a blood stain was still
visible on the brick sidewalk, with
blood splatters on the wall just under
the hotel sign. A mobility scooter stood
on the pavement outside the hotel,
covered in a yellow tarp, its wire basket
a few feet away.

Just behind was one prosthetic leg with

the socked foot still tucked inside a
high-top shoe; another leg sat near a
pool of blood, the red sole of its shoe
facing the street. Nearby was a wad
of medical gauze, red with still more
blood.
The Ottawa police major crime section
was investigating due to the serious
nature of the mans injuries.
Morrison would not identify the victim
but said he was one of two men booked
through the Libyan Embassy. The
victim had been at the hotel for 13
days and had two more days on his
reservation, though Morrison said the
man had extended his stay before, so it
was unclear when he would have been
leaving.
Morrison said interactions with staff
had given no indication anything was
wrong.
He said, Hello, my friend, which
is what he normally said as he was
passing by, Morrison said. That was
very typical.
Morrison said the man always travelled
on his scooter.

Senior Died After Being Attacked In Hospital By Dementia Patient,

And Police Were Never Called

An 82-year-old Chemainus man died

after an altercation with another elderly
man at Cowichan District Hospital on
July 3, and neither RCMP nor the B.C.
Coroners Service was called, Island
Health confirmed Tuesday.
Gordon Kriese died July 10 at the
hospital, a week after a physical
dispute with a dementia patient, said
his daughter Laura Chafe.
It is not a normal process to
notify the coroner in the death of a
palliative patient," said Island Health
spokeswoman Sarah Plank. "After a
discussion with the coroner's office, we
recognize in this case we should have
contacted them.
We will be working with the coroner's
office to provide education to staff at
CDH to ensure better awareness of
reporting requirements, Plank said.
The incident was witnessed by staff
and was quickly defused, Plank said.
Medical treatment was provided to the
men and their families were contacted,
she said.
Kriese was sitting in a washroom when
another patient assaulted him, Chafe
said.
She was told by a doctor that her
fathers injuries included broken ribs
and punctured lungs. There was severe
bruising on his body and arms, said

Chafe, who took photos.

The attack was not reported by Island
Health staff to the RCMP nor, once
Kriese died in hospital, the coroner's
office, which is supposed to be called
to investigate unexpected deaths.
Chafe called the B.C. Coroners Service
herself on July 25.
We have commenced an investigation
into it, to determine what our eventual
classification should be, Barb
McLintock, spokeswoman for the
coroner's service, said Tuesday.
The coroner's service will request
Island Health records to determine
whether Krieses death was suspicious.
We will definitely look into the
incident involving the apparent other
patient, McLintock said.
Chafe said she will file a complaint
with Island Health. Cpl. Jon Stuart
confirmed Duncan/North Cowichan
RCMP is investigating.
Island Health is conducting an internal
review and co-operating with the RCMP
in their investigation, Plank said.
Kriese grew up and attended school in
Vernon. He worked at the MacMillan
Bloedel mill in Chemainus from 1953
to 1983, then transferred to the mill
in Tahsis. He was an avid sportsman
and a longtime member of the Duncan
Curling Club.

Gordon Kriese died July 10 in hospital after he was attacked in a washroom

by another elderly dementia patient. Cowichan District Hospital failed to
notify the RCMP or B.C. Coroners Service about the alleged fatal assault.

B.C. Police Arrest Three Members Of 856 Gang, Seize $400,000 In

Drugs

B.C.s anti-gang unit says it has

arrested three high-ranking members
of the 856 gang a group that grew out
of a Lower Mainland school about a
decade ago and maintained a relatively
low profile even as it extended east into
Alberta and Ontario, and north into the
territories.
Police say the 856 gang which took
its name from the phone prefix for the
community of Aldergrove has steered
clear of feuds with the larger organizedcrime groups in Metro Vancouver, such
as the Red Scorpions, United Nations
or Independent Soldiers.
Police say it has sought out smaller
communities and violently taken over
those drug markets.
Sergeant Lindsey Houghton, a
spokesman for the Combined Forces
Special Enforcement Unit of B.C., said
the arrests and the seizure of nearly
$400,000 worth of drugs are major
strikes against the group.
This seizure represents a significant
quantity of drugs that will now not
make it onto the streets and into the
hands of some of the most vulnerable
people in our communities, Sgt.
Houghton said on Wednesday.
By taking quick enforcement action
against a group known for their violence
across British Columbia and beyond,
we have made a serious impact on their
ability to further victimize people and
[made] our communities safer.

The men aged 23, 25 and 47 have

not been charged, and police have not
released their names. Sgt. Houghton
said officers must wait for forensic
tests before they can submit their
report to Crown. He said police will
likely recommend charges related to
drug trafficking.
Sgt. Houghton said the 856 gang started
in much the same way as the United
Nations crime group, through friends
at a school. He said it is difficult to
tell how many people are in the gang,
but estimated it has about a dozen core
members and many more workers and
associates.
RCMP in Yellowknife late last year
arrested 11 people in a series of raids
known as Project Goblin. Police said
the drug operation they dismantled was
run by the 856.
The groups name has not come up in
the Lower Mainlands drug war.
In fact, Ehor Boyanowsky, a
criminology professor at Simon Fraser
University who has studied gangs, said
he could not comment on Wednesdays
announcement because he did not
know much about the 856.
Robert Gordon, who also teaches
criminology at SFU, said the 856 was
a pretty small fry when it started,
made up of young and restless males.
If this is their handiwork, they have
come up in the world, he wrote in an
e-mail.

Sgt. Houghton said while the 856

has had success with drug operations
elsewhere, it has had a harder time
exerting its influence in the Lower
Mainland. He said the shootings of
six people in a Surrey high-rise at
the height of the gang war was also a
deterrent.
A lot of the main gangs are very well
entrenched here. I dont think it would
be a shock to any of us that something
like the Surrey Six probably turned off
a lot of people looking to make a name
for themselves in the drug trade here
because they dont want to get killed,

he said.
The anti-gang unit launched its
investigation in early July and
arrested the men last week. A search
at a Langley apartment building turned
up large quantities of drugs. Sgt.
Houghton said police seized $150,000
worth of cocaine, $100,000 of
methamphetamine, $55,000 of heroin
and $80,000 of a cocaine cutting agent.
He said the cutting agent was a
chemical known as phenacetin, which
was once a pain reliever but was found
to be unhealthy for humans. He said
its generally used to deworm pigs.

Communication And Your 13- To

18-Year-Old

During this period, teens spend much of

the day outside the home at school
or at after-school activities or jobs and
with peers. But it's important to try to
talk with your teen every day to share
opinions, ideas, and information.
Here are a few tips to help you
communicate with your teen:
Make time during the day or evening to
hear about your teen's activities; be sure
that he or she knows you are actively
interested and listening carefully.
Remember to talk with your teen, not
at him or her.
Ask questions that go beyond "yes"
or "no" answers to prompt more
developed conversation.
Take advantage of time during car trips
or standing in line at the supermarket
to talk with your teen.
Provide activities that offer opportunities
to improve communication skills, such
as attending or engaging in sporting
and school events, playing games, and
talking about current events.
Vocabulary and Communication
Teens essentially communicate as
adults, with increasing maturity
throughout high school. They
comprehend abstract language, such
as idioms, figurative language, and
metaphors. Explanations may become
more figurative and less literal.
Teens should be able to process texts and
abstract meaning, relate word meanings
and contexts, understand punctuation,
and form complex syntactic structures.
However, communication is more than
the use and understanding of words; it also
includes how teens think of themselves,

their peers, and authority figures.

As teens seek independence from family
and establish their own identity, they begin
thinking abstractly and become concerned
with moral issues. All of this shapes the
way they think and communicate.
If You Suspect a Problem
You
should
have
ongoing
communication with your teen's
teachers about overall language skills
and progress. If the teachers suspect
a language-based learning disability,
comprehensive testing will be
necessary. This can include a hearing
test, psycho-educational assessment
(standardized testing to assess learning
style as well as cognitive processes),
and speech-language evaluation.
A teen with a specific communication
difficulty, such as persistent stuttering, should
be referred to the school speech-language
pathologist (an expert who evaluates and
treats speech and language disorders).
Persistent stuttering and vocal-quality
problems such as hoarseness, breathiness,
or raspiness may require a medical
evaluation by an otolaryngologist (an
ear, nose, and throat specialist).
But in most cases, language difficulties
will have been identified before this age.
However, increasing academic troubles
might indicate subtle problems.
Parents often feel that the teen years
are a time of difficult communication,
when it's normal for teens to challenge
parents and resist authority. However,
severe disruption in the household isn't
considered normal. If you feel that your
relationship is particularly difficult,
discuss it with your doctor.

Here are a few points that you need to

keep in mind as your bring up your kids
Avoid people who make you feel guilty
If your 55-year-old relative comes and
tut-tuts, 'I could never stay away from my
child for so long' or 'How can you bear to
leave your child with a babysitter?' avoid
her. Stay away from the people who pass
such remarks. You know you are doing
your best. Stop and think why are they
trying to make you feel guilty are they
jealous of the wonderful way you are
handling everything?
Take pride in who you are
Begin by patting your back a little. Come
on! You are doing a great job looking
after your family, and your work isn't the
most easy thing in the world. Working
mothers should be taking pride in
themselves for doing so much. This selfappreciation will help you stay happier
and in turn will make your interaction
with your child more positive.
Stay in touch always
Keeping up with all that is happening
in your child's life can help boost the
way you feel about yourself. Talk to

his/her teacher, friends regularly.

Switch off the TV; spend 'quality' time
You should make sure that the time you
are with your family is for them. Watching
television together is not really spending
quality time. Go out for lunch or dinner.
Sharon, singer, was a single working
mother to actress Shezahn. Sharon says,
"When Shezahn was a child, we had one
day in every week when I'd take her out
to lunch. It was special for both of us."
This kind of an outing will help you bond
better with your child.
Manage your chores effectively
You are aware of all your household
chores, so plan doing it in such a way that
it leaves you with ample time for your
kids. "My son is four and I love to spend
my mornings with him before he leaves
for daycare and I go off to work. And that
is the reason I finish the major part of my
cooking and cleaning, the previous night,"
says Soumya, an HR manager. Spending
quality time with your child playing
a game or going for a walk in a nearby
garden or just talking about the day can
help take away your guilty feelings.

Dos And Don'ts For Pregnant

Women While Travelling

Expecting mothers with normal

pregnancy are not prevented from
travelling by airplane, train, fourwheelers, but they need to be cautious,
says an expert.
"Pregnant women can travel as long as
they feel comfortable and everything is
normal. Four-wheelers are safer than
two-wheelers or autos. Two-wheelers
are poorly balanced and can even give
backache.
"The same goes for autos, so they
should request the driver to drive
slowly if they choose to opt for these
transports," gynecologist Mugdha
Raut, managing director of Dr.Raut's
Women's Hospital, Mumbai, said.

If expecting mothers opt to fly from one

city to another, they must carry their
medical record and be cautious too.
"They shouldn't travel for long
distance. If they do, drink water
regularly to avoid dehydration. Take
walk after every one hour and consume
baby aspirin to prevent clot in legs,"
she said.
Most passengers get lured by food
available at railway stations, and
women who are expecting should
avoid them.
"Avoid eating outside food and also
carry your own water. If you choose
to buy mineral water, make sure it is
sealed," she said.

Disease progression of prostate
cancer
Cancer cells have the potential to spread
from the prostate to other parts of the body
where they can grow into new tumours.
This process is called metastasis. The
tumours are also called metastasis (singular)
or metastases (plural). Metastases are also
called secondary tumours.
Understanding the usual progression
of cancer helps the doctor to predict
its probable course, plan treatment and
anticipate further care.
Prostate cancer spreads by direct
extension to nearby structures or by
lymphatic spread to the regional lymph
nodes. Prostate cancer can also spread
through the blood to distant sites.
The most common sites where prostate
cancer spreads are:
-ureters
-bladder
-urethra
-rectum
-lymph nodes surrounding the prostate
-bone especially the spine, pelvis,
thigh bone (femur) and ribs
-lung metastases (very rare)
-liver metastases (very rare)
-brain metastases (very rare)
Cancer-related emergencies are serious
cancer-related problems that can occur
because of prostate cancer:
acute renal failure This can result
from obstruction of the ureters.
brain metastasis This causes a
variety of symptoms, including
headache and disturbances in mood,
speech, movement and internal body
functions. In addition to supportive
therapy to relieve symptoms and lower
intracranial pressure, treatment of the
brain metastasis may be given based on
the general health of the person.
bladder outlet obstruction This requires
supportive therapy as well as treatment
to relieve or bypass the obstruction.
TURP is sometimes performed.
spinal cord compression This is
caused by spread of the prostate
cancer to the spine, which compresses
the spinal cord. It may cause sudden
weakness of the legs. This usually
requires treatment to relieve the

pressure on the spinal cord and prevent
numbness of the legs or paralysis.
Prognosis and survival for prostate
cancer
Men with prostate cancer may have
questions about their prognosis and
survival. Prognosis and survival
depend on many factors. Only a doctor
familiar with a person's medical history,
type of cancer, stage, characteristics
of the cancer, treatments chosen and
response to treatment can put all of
this information together with survival
statistics to arrive at a prognosis.
A prognosis is the doctor's best estimate
of how cancer will affect a person,
and how it will respond to treatment.
A prognostic factor is an aspect of the
cancer or a characteristic of the person
that the doctor will consider when
making a prognosis. A predictive factor
influences how a cancer will respond
to a certain treatment. Prognostic and
predictive factors are often discussed
together, and they both play a part in
deciding on a treatment plan and a
prognosis.
More than 95% of prostate cancers
are adenocarcinomas. The majority
are slow growing and respond well to
treatment. Rare types of prostate cancer
include sarcomas, small cell carcinomas
and transitional cell carcinomas. These
make up less than 5% of all prostate
cancers, and their prognosis is different.
The following are prognostic factors
for adenocarcinoma of the prostate:
Stage
Stage is an important prognostic factor
for prostate cancer. The less advanced
a prostate cancer is at diagnosis, the
more favourable the prognosis.
Tumours confined to the prostate (T1
and T2) have a better prognosis than
tumours that have spread outside the
prostate (T3 and T4).
Gleason score
The Gleason score indicates the
aggressiveness of the prostate cancer:
Scores less than 7 indicate a more
favourable prognosis.
A score of 7 indicates an intermediate
prognosis.
Scores greater than 7 indicate a less
favourable prognosis.
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level
The prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
level at the time of diagnosis may
indicate how much prostate cancer is
in the body (tumour burden). Higher
PSA levels indicate that there is a
higher tumour burden in the body. A
PSA less than 10 is favourable, while
a PSA greater than 20 is considered
unfavourable. A PSA between 10 and
20 is intermediate.
Other factors
Other factors may have an effect on a man's
overall prognosis for prostate cancer:

-resistance to hormone treatment

Castrate-resistant
or
hormonerefractory prostate cancer is cancer that
has come back or has progressed after
being treated with hormonal therapy.
Prostate cancer cells gradually develop
a resistance to hormonal therapy.
-age
Younger men may have tumours that
are more aggressive, with higher
Gleason scores.
Older men may have other illnesses
that could affect the type of prostate
cancer treatment they can tolerate.
Stage/prognostic
grouping
of
prostate cancer
The stage/prognostic grouping of
prostate cancer is based on the stage, PSA
level and Gleason score. This grouping is
more accurate than TNM staging alone in
assessing prognosis. Men in group I have
the best chance of a cure, least chance
of a recurrence and a better outlook for
survival compared to men in group IV.
Group II has the next best prognosis
followed by group III. Although men
in group IV have a poorer prognosis
compared to the other three groups, they
may still have effective treatment options
to control the cancer, improve quality of
life and prolong survival.
Doctors also use nomograms to predict
prognosis in different prostate cancer
situations. Nomograms are statistical
models that predict probable outcome.
They take into account the stage,
Gleason score, PSA level, biopsy
pathology reports, use of hormone
therapy, radiation dosage as well as other
specific individual information such as
age or treatment already received.
Cancer of the Prostate Risk Assessment
(CAPRA) nomogram calculates the
risk of metastasis and the risk to the
life of the man with a high degree of
accuracy. It uses the following data:
-PSA level
-Gleason score
-percentage of biopsies positive for
cancer
-clinical tumour stage
-man's age at the time of diagnosis
Treatment recommendations are based
on the level of risk of metastasis or risk
to the life of the man.
The pathological stage of prostate
cancer is determined after microscopic
examination of the tissue removed by
radical prostatectomy. The pathological
stage is the actual extent of the cancer.
This can be predicted before surgery
using Partin tables. Partin tables are
a widely used nomogram to predict
the pathological stage using the PSA
level, Gleason score and estimated
clinical stage. This information helps
in making treatment decisions as well
as estimating prognosis.
Recurrence risk levels of prostate

cancer
Oncologists may classify prostate
cancer into groups based on the risk of
recurrence (low risk, intermediate risk
or high risk). These levels of risk can
guide treatment plans for a man with
prostate cancer.
Men in the high-risk group are offered
aggressive treatment. Those in the low-risk
group may be offered active surveillance
without immediate treatment.
Survival statistics for prostate cancer
Survival statistics for prostate cancer
are very general estimates and must
be interpreted very carefully. Because
survival statistics are based on the
experience of groups of people, they
cannot be used to predict a particular
person's chances of survival.
There are many different ways to
measure and report cancer survival
statistics. Your doctor can explain the
statistics for prostate cancer and what
they mean to you.
Relative survival
Relative survival looks at how likely
people with cancer are to survive after
their diagnosis compared to people
in the general population who do not
have cancer, but who share similar
characteristics (such as age and sex).
In Canada, a 5-year relative survival
statistic is reported for prostate cancer. The
5-year relative survival for prostate cancer
is 96%. This means that, on average, men
diagnosed with prostate cancer are 96%
as likely to live 5 years after diagnosis as
people in the general population.
Survival by stage
Survival varies with each stage of prostate
cancer. The following factors can also
affect survival for prostate cancer.
-Prostate cancer grows slowly. Many
older men will die from diseases other
than prostate cancer.
-Generally, the earlier prostate cancer
is diagnosed and treated, the better the
outcome.
-Sometimes prostate cancer is not found
until it is at an advanced stage, which
can make it more difficult to treat.
-Prostate cancer is very responsive to
treatment.
-There are many effective treatments
available for prostate cancer.
-Advanced, recurrent and hormoneresistant prostate cancers can be
difficult to treat because these do not
respond well to some cancer treatments.
-The grade of prostate cancer is also a
strong predictor of survival.
UICC prognostic grouping of prostate
cancer of the prostate is based on the
stage, PSA level and the Gleason score
of the prostate cancer. This is a more
accurate grouping than stage grouping
to assess prognosis.

Sunny Leones Bra Goes Missing In Bhojpuri Version

Of Baby Doll Song From Ragini MMS 2

A Bhojpuri version of Ragini MMS 2

is out and we must say that the makers
of this video have done quite a few
changes
Sunny Leones sexy Baby Doll act
became an instant hit. Not only were
there several versions of this song that
came out, but now we have the pornstarturned-Bollywood heroine mouthing
Bhojpuri lyrics to the same tune. Well,
heres the same old Baby Doll track in
a brand new avatar. And yes, like us
you can spot some differences too.
Sunnys missing clothes: Not that we
were looking out for, but we were quite
surprised to see Ms Leone go topless
in this song. Her dare bare act in the
film was the talking point, but we also
heard how an apprehensive Sunny had
asked the makers to tone down on skin
show. Once the Mastizaade actor gets

a whiff of this video were sure she

will press the panic button. So, now
you have the much debated part of the
entire video presented in an even more
sensational manner and Sunnys black
bra is clearly gone missing. We wonder
who got mischievous.
Singer: The song is composed by Meet
Bros & Anjjan and was rendered by
Kanika Kapoor and Kunal Avanti. The
Bhojpuri version is sung by Khushbu
Jain and Saket. And we leave it up to
you to decide who does a better job.
Lyrics: While lyrics of the original
Hindi track is penned by Kumaar, the
Bhojpuri version is by Srikant Mishra
and goes like this, Gori gori humaari
badaniya, Gori gori humaari badaniya,
oye kayle julm jamaniya oye kayle
julm jamaniya. We must say that it is
quite entertaining.

Kareena Kapoor Khan Urges

Action Gone Wrong: Manish Paul
Rohit Shetty To Make A Film On
Gets Injured By Akshay
Female Cops

It seems bebo has got inspired by Rani

Mukerjis role in Mardaani.
Guess what! Kareena Kapoor Khan
seems to have liked the trailer of Rani
Mukherjees upcoming film Mardaani
a lot. So much that she has asked
friend-director Rohit Shetty to make
a film on female cops. In a recent
interview, Kareena was quoted saying
that she wants Rohit Shetty to make his
next film on female cops.
Kareena, who stars in Rohits upcoming
Singham Returns is amazed by the way
the director has characterised the cops
in his film. Ajay Devgan who reprises
his role as the tough cop Bajirao
Singham seems to be a testimony to the

indomitable spirit that exists in police

officers all over the nation.
Kareena, who is rather too picky
about her films now, wants to have
an interaction with the female police
officers from the country and hopes that
Rohit shows Singham Returns to all the
female officers as well. According to
the Jab We Met heroine, all other cop
films show the police in a rather comical
manner or as lumpmen but Singham
Returns makes all the difference.
Singham Returns has already booked
an Independence Day release and this
will star Ajay Devgan and Kareena
Kapoor in lead roles once again after
Satyagraha which released last year.

'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa' host Manish Paul

ended up getting hurt when Akshay
Kumar decided to demonstrate some
martial arts moves on stage
On Tuesday evening, Akshay Kumar
shot his portion for the reality dance
show, Jhalak Dikhhlaa Jaa. The actor
was making an aearance on the show to
promote his forthcoming film.
During the shoot, Akki was asked to
demonstrate one of his famous kicks
and the actor put so much energy into
it that he landed on host Manish Paul,
who then fell on the floor. The anchor
is said to have been hurt in the thigh
due to the incident.

Akshay Kumar's stunt floored Manish

Paul - quite literally - and Mr Khiladi
had to not only pick him up, but also
comfort him
When contacted, Manish Paul said
that he was hurt, but quickly added
that there's nothing to worry about
now. He recounted, `At first, Akshay
did the flying kick and then when he
demonstrated the ground kick, I was
supposed to jump aside.
But I got the timing wrong and ended
up getting hit. Akshay was worried
about me and he kept asking me if I
was okay. I told him I was fine and we
continued shooting.''

Filmmaker Rohit Shetty was strangely

missing from a 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa' .
Rohit Shetty and Kareena Kapoor
were slated to appear on an episode
of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa to promote their
film, Singham Returns. However, the
actress walked in alone for the shoot.
A source says, `It was a hectic day
since we had to shoot two sets of
celebrities in two different episodes.
In the morning, we shot with Akshay
Kumar and in the evening, we were
waiting for Kareena and Rohit. But
after waiting for some time, we were
told that Rohit will not be able to make
it on the show, as he was busy with the
film's editing.`
It may be pointed out that Ajay Devgan
doesn't prefer making appearances on
dance reality shows; he promotes his
films on comedy shows instead. A
crewmember says, `We knew that Ajay
is not going to be part of the show and

we were fine with it. But Rohit had

recently hosted a season of Khatron
Ke Khiladi for the same channel, so his
last-minute cancellation was a surprise
for the production team. We had even
planned a prank that he was going to
play on the contestants.`
Rohit Shetty and the channel remained
unavailable for comment.

people like Kapil Sharma," he captioned

Vyjayanthimala Bali
Daughter of Shri M.D.Raman
and Shrimati Vasundhara Devi,
Vyjayanthimala was born in Madras
(Chennai) on August 13, 1936.
Schooling was in Presentation Convent
and Good Shepherd Convent, both in
Madras. She started taking lessons
in Bharatanatyam dancing from
a very early age and was already
performing on stage while still in
high school. A family friend, Shri
M.V.Raman, after watching her dance
performance, launched her in AVM's
Tamil film Vazhkai in 1949. Initially,
Vyjayanthimala's orthodox family did
not want her to enter the film industry.
But eventually, her foresighted
grandmother, Yadugiri Devi, who often
watched over young Vyjayanthimala's
life and guided her career, consented
and let Vyjayanthimala play a role in
Vazhkai. The film was such a great
success that it was re-made in Telugu
(Jeevitham). The Telugu version was
also a hit. AVM Productions then
decided to go to Bombay and do the
film in Hindi. Vyjayanthimala was
chosen to do the Hindi version too.
Vyjayanthimala had the advantage
of being fluent in Hindi as she had
studied Hindi at Hindi Prachar Sabha
in Madras. The Hindi version of the
movie, Bahar, was released in 1951
and it was also a commercial success.
Tamilian Vyjayanthimala thus entered
the world of Bombay based Hindi
films.
Vyjayanthimala is also interested in
politics and has actively participated
in Indian politics. She was elected to
the Lok Sabha (Lower House of the
Indian Parliament) twice and was also
nominated to the Rajya Sabha (Upper
House of the Indian Parliament) once.
She was very close to the then Indian
Prime Minister, Shrimati Indira Gandhi.
Vyjayanthimala, now over 70, still
actively pursues her number one
passion - dancing. She continues to do
dance research and choreography and
on special occasions even performs
on stage. She is the Life President
and Trustee of Natyalaya Academy of
Classical Bharatanatyam and Music in
her hometown Chennai. She is also the
Founder Trustee of Dr. Bali Pharma
Foundation - a charitable trust, to
serve the poor and downtrodden and
to look after the welfare of women
and children. She has now distanced
herself from the movie industry and
Mumbai (Bombay).
At age 15, she got a break in an AVM
(production house) Tamil movie,
Vazhkai, which was produced by M.
V. Raman, a family friend. The movie
was a success, and was remade in Hindi

as Bahaar (1951). She acted in a few

more Tamil movies before moving on
to a highly successful career in Hindi
movies. Her dance competition with
Padmini in the Tamil film, Vanjikottai
Vaaliban, received much acclaim.
Vyjayanthimala got her initial Hindi
movie roles in Ladki and Nagin (1954).
Hemant Kumar's music and her dance
accompanying the song, Man Dole,
mera tan dole, in Nagin made the movie
an enormous success, and the movie's
success helped Vyjayanthimala break
out of B grade movies. Bimal Roy
cast her as Chandramukhi opposite
Dilip Kumar in the critically acclaimed
Devdas. She subsequently starred in
four successful films opposite Dilip
Kumar: Madhumati, Ganga Jamuna,
Leader, and Naya Daur. The first
two of those four roles earned her
Filmfare Best Actress Awards. She
also received a Filmfare nomination as
Best Actress for portraying in Sadhana
a tawaif (a courtesan) who eventually
got rehabilitated in the society. She
costarred with Raj Kapoor in Sangam
which earned her the Filmfare Best
Actress Award. (She denied rumors
of an affair with Raj Kapoor during
the production of Sangam, saying that
it was a publicity stunt by Kapoor to
boost his image.
Vyjayanthimala starred in the 1966
historical epic, Amrapali, which was
based on the life of the legendary
Buddhist courtesan Amrapali. The
movie was not a commercial success,
and the commercial failure much
disappointed her as she considered it
the magnum opus of her career. Later,
she said that she would like to see a
remake of that movie, with Madhuri
Dixit playing her role.

She costarred with Dev Anand in

Jewel Thief, with Rajendra Kumar in
Suraj, with Shammi Kapoor in Prince,
and with Kishore Kumar in his inane
yet zany comedies,including the
blockbuster New Delhi.
Vyjayanthimala's
Tamil
movies
included
Vanjikottai
Valiban,
Irumbuthirai, Then Nilavu, Vaazhkai,
Penn, Parthiban Kanavu (old), and
Baghdad Thirudan.
Vyjayanthimala fell in love with
Raj Kapoor's personal physician,
Dr. Chamanlal Bali, who was then
married, (and had three children).
Dr. Bali divorced his wife to marry
her, saying that there was already a
void in his life when they met. After
marriage, she terminated her acting
career and moved to Chennai. She has
a son, Suchindra, by Dr. Bali. After
the death of her husband, she entered
politics and got elected as a member
of Lok Sabha (lower house). Later, she
got nominated as a member of Rajya
Sabha (the upper house). In 2007, she
published her autobiography, titled
Bonding, with Jyoti Sabarwal as the
co-writer.
In 1956, she got Filmfare Best
Supporting Actress Award, for a role
in Devdas. Vyjayanthimala did not
accept the award, her contention
being that her role in that movie was
that of the main actress rather than a
supporting actress. (That was the first
time a person had declined to receive
a Filmfare Award.) In 1958 she got
Filmfare Best Actress Award, for a role
in Madhumati. In 1961 she got Filmfare
Best Actress Award, for a role in Ganga
Jamuna. In 1964 she got Filmfare Best
Actress Award, for a role in Sangam.
In 1995 she got Filmfare Lifetime

Achievement Award.In 2005 she got

Lifetime Achievement Award at the
Bollywood Movie Awards.
In her entire film career, which lasted
for two decades, Vyjayanthimala has
acted in 63 films all together.
She has performed her art in many
countries of the world. The most notable
of them being her performances at:
The United Nations 20th Anniversary
Celebrations of the Human Rights Day
in 1969 in New York, USA. (She was
the first Indian Dancer to ever give a
Bharatanatyam recital at the United
Nations.)
The International Opera House in
Sydney, Australia.
The Adelaide Festival in Adelaide,
Australia.
The Royal Opera Rallst Festival in
Stockholm, Sweden.
The Holland Festival in Rotterdam,
The Netherlands.
The Autumn Festival in Paris, France.
Vyjayanthimala is also the recipient
of many awards and honors. The most
notable of them being:
Filmfare Best Supporting Actress
Award (1957) for Devdas (1955).
(She refused to accept this award on
the grounds that her role was not of
a supporting actress. She believed
that her role was as important as the
heroine's role in the movie.)
Filmfare Best Actress Award (1959)
for Sadhna (1958).
Filmfare Best Actress Award (1962)
for Gunga Jumna (1961).
Filmfare Best Actress Award (1965)
for Sangam (1964).
Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award
(1996)
The title "Padmashri" awarded by the
Government of India in 1968.
Arasavai Natya Kalaingnar by Tamil
Nadu Government for excellence in
Natya.
Kalaimani Award given by Tamil Nadu
Government in 1979.
Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in
1982.

Beauty Secrets Of Coconut Oil

Ever wondered how these Hollywood
beauties always look so stunning? Age
and motherhood simply doesn't seem
to affect them at all.
Madonna is over fifty, has delivered two
kids and still continues to give every
twenty-five year old model a run for
her money. The secret lies in coconut
which has been easily accessible to us
but we never really learnt its multiple
beauty benefits. Coconut is a nature's
gift which is packed with the "Magical
Laurites".
Use it as a Foundation Primer: All
you make up addicts will agree that
a perfect make up is never complete
without a primer. Did you know
coconut oil works as the perfect primer
for a foundation? Simply dab some on
your face, let it soak in and then apply
your tinted moisturizer or foundation.
You will notice how much smoother
and longer your makeup stays on. You
can also dab some coconut oil on your
cheekbone to highlight them and you
are sure to sparkle!
Lovely locks that you can flaunt:
Using coconut oil regularly not only
enhances the beauty of your hair, but also
keeps them ultra- soft & smooth. It also
constantly repairs damage and protects
them from the polluted environment.
The magical Laurites gives your hair
everything it needs. It binds the hair
proteins and holds them giving you
stronger, shinier and healthier hair. It also
helps reduce frizz and repairs split ends
faster and works wonders for your hair.
Your skin will love it too:
If you love your skin, then you know
that moisturizing is the key. Coconut
Oil is a natural moisturizer which
keeps your skin hydrated and protects
from pollution and the changing
weather. Use of coconut cleanses and
neutralizes the toxins, which not only
detoxifies but also builds the skin's
natural immune system. Use coconut
oil to moisturize your skin after a
shower.
Oil Pulling for that clear and
luminous skin:
Swishing coconut oil around in your
mouth for 20 minutes a day will help
to detoxify your body, cure headaches,
avoid acidity and whiten the teeth. 'Oil
pulling is an age-old tradition in India
that cleanses your system from within.
Hollywood diva, Angelina Jolie has
been known to start her day with little

more than a spoonful of coconut oil

and a handful of cereal to keep that
glowing and younger looking skin.
Now you know why she still looks so
fabulous with every passing year.
Apply for a Silky Smooth Shaving
Cream:
Who said shaving cream has to lather?
Use coconut oil as a base to get a closer
shave that leaves your skin smooth and
supple instead of leaving your skin dry,
patchy and a lot of times with bruises
too.
Make a Body Scrub:
If you are a DIY (Do It Yourself)
experimentalist, then coconut oil is
a vanity essential for your kit! Here's
what you can do to get that luminous
skin - Mix half a cup of coconut oil
with granulated sugar and apply the
concoction for exfoliation. You will
notice the magical glow on your skin
immediately and you are all set for a
special evening with your boyfriend.
Also doubles up as a Makeup
Remover:
Even the most resistant waterproof
mascara does not stand a chance
against coconut oil. Apply it directly
to the face as an oil cleanser or let
it sit on your skin with a cotton pad.
Your makeup is sure to melt away.
The 'Magical Laurites' lifts the dirt
and bacteria from deep within the skin
leaving it feeling fresh.
Rub some coconut oil for Softening
Cuticles:
Have you ever wondered why your
grandmother still continues to rub
few drops of coconut oil on her palms
and hands before she goes to bed. If
you wash your hands often or your
cuticles just need a little extra tender
care, apply coconut oil to your fingers
twice daily to keep them soft, supple
and nourished. You can make out the
difference in just a few days.
Dab it as Under-Eye Cream:
Don't want to spend and experiment with
plethora of under eye creams and serums
present in the market? Apply some
coconut oil enriched with vitamin E and
packed with to cure the under-eye bags
and fine lines. It's light enough for the
most delicate skin on your face. Coconut
oil is packed with antioxidants that helps
fade and reduce the appearance of dark
spots. Women whose skin is sensitive to
creams and serums should definitely use
coconut oil.

Relationships

Dealing With A Long Distance

Relationship

Dating someone who's far away can be

quite challenging but there are ways
you can bridge the distance without
letting the spark die out. Here's how:
Talk: Make it a point to talk every day.
The conversation doesn't have to be
long or detailed but make it a point to
talk to each other at least once a day.
A simple phone call or text messages
throughout the day is all that's needed.
It's important to keep each other in the
loop about your lives as well.
Lay down some ground rules: There
are a few rules that work exclusively
for each couple. Recognize them and
talk to each other concerning the same.
Also, when you are away try your
best to live up to the rules you made
together.
Keep it 'spicy': Just because you're
not physically together doesn't mean
you let the spark die out. Falling into a

fixed routine can be highly detrimental

to your relationship. Keep surprising
each other. Call at random hours of
the day, send each other cute little
gifts, plan a surprise visit. As much as
possible keep it fresh and exciting.
Write letters: It's easy to stay in touch
via social networking sites and over
the phone. Keep it romantic by writing
each other letters occasionally. It also
shows the effort you have put in and
how much you care. Besides, they
make for great keepsakes to hold onto.
Make a predictable end: The distance
should have a foreseeable end. You
can't do the distance forever so make
sure that you have an end to the
distance and that it works to suit both
your convenience. The most basic
premise to making a long distance
work is knowing that you both want a
forever.

Some Things You Should Keep To

Yourself
Love is all about sharing and caring. But I am not sure the former should be
in its entirety. At times, telling too much about yourself to your boyfriend may
land you in trouble.
Better safe than sorry. So it's best to
hide some things in the interest of your
relationship. Here you go...
Don't make him feel insecure: You
may want to impress him by saying
it was you who ditched your Ex. Or
about how good your best friend is in
two-timing. Mind you, he may not take
it too kindly. For one, he would think
this is his future too!
Your best friend's personal life: First
things first do not share your best
friend's phone number, email address
with your boyfriend. Also, if your BFF
has shared all her secrets with you, best
keep it hidden from your boyfriend.
For one, he may not be interested. Two,
he may start showing her sympathy
fuelling jealousy. Who knows it might
be a point of conflict between the two
of you. You might also start feeling
insecure.
Your passwords: Never do this even if
you are married. Both of you are entitled
to some space in the relationship.
Sharing email passwords and ATM
pins is a strict no-no. You might want
to bring in the transparency issue here.
Yet, it's strictly not advisable. Imagine
your boyfriend reading up your online
chat conversations to beat boredom

and discovers you had actually ditched

him to be at a party with your BFF! It
would be disastrous.
Do not discuss your salary details:
Unless you are married and are looking
at joint investments for the family,
it's best not to boast about your fat
paycheck. It's okay to tell him you
get a decent remuneration. But not the
exact details. But same applies to you
too. Your boyfriend too is under no
obligation to disclose his salary details.
Let bygones be bygones: Your
experience with your Ex was bitter to
say the least. Your present boyfriend
is all that he wasn't. And all you want
do is go gaga over how he scores over
your ex. But hold on! Control your
emotions, let go off your past and live
in the present. It's wise not to share any
details of your past relationship with
your present one. You may regret it
later.
When in love, it's natural to get carried
away and tell him all about yourself.
However, besides other reasons, one
good reason for you to not share some
things with him is to let him accept
you the way you are. Also, let there
be some part of you which he doesn't
know, right?

Nuts High In Iron

Hazelnuts:

Did you know that 56 per cent of Indian

women are anaemic? (National Family
Health Survey 2005-2006). Anaemia
also affects children and men and is
associated with pale skin, dizziness,
drowsiness, weakness, fatigue, loss
of appetite and palpitations. Anaemia
also results in sexual dysfunction,
headaches, nervousness, forgetfulness,
lack of concentration and poor
performance at work. But, the good
news is that, it can be easily treated,
simply by adding these six nuts to
your diet, which will improve your
haemoglobin levels.
Cashew nuts:

One should consume 10 gms of cashew

nuts as they contains 0.3 mg of iron.
Men need 8 mg of iron but women
need 18 mg.
Pine nuts:

10 gms of pine nuts contain 0.6 mg of

iron. Whether you eat it raw or roasted,
pine nuts help improve haemoglobin
levels.

14 gms of hazelnuts contains 0.7 mg

of iron, but they also contain calcium,
magnesium and vitamin B.
Peanuts:

When peanuts are consumed as peanut

butter, the two tablespoons contains
0.6 mg of iron. They also contain
potassium, magnesium and vitamin B.
Pistachios:

Pistachios seems to be the best nut for

their iron content. 28 gms of pistachios
contains 1.1 mg of iron and this nut
is easily available in India. Pistachios
also contain magnesium and vitamin
B.
Almonds:

10 gms of dry roasted almonds contain

0.5 mg of iron. Almonds also contain

Foods To Keep You Young

Add age-defying foods to your diet and
start looking and feeling younger.
Stress, pollution, sun exposure and
excessive alcohol consumption all
play a part in speeding up the ageing
process. Poor eating habits are also a
major contributor. These foods will
help protect you from age-related
illnesses and degenerative diseases,
and prevent wrinkles from appearing
before their time.
Here are nine foods to keep you looking
and feeling young.
Avocado
Avocado should be one of your
anti-ageing staples. Avocados are
an excellent source of vitamin E,
a powerful antioxidant and a freeradical scavenger that helps prevent
damage to collagen. Their high levels
of beneficial unsaturated fats and betacarotene nourish skin and protect from
the visible signs of ageing, as well
as keeping your heart and eyesight
healthy as you get older.
Brazil nuts
These are one of the best sources of the
trace mineral selenium, which helps
to improve skin elasticity. Selenium is
also a potent antioxidant which helps
to reduce the risk of skin cancer and
prevents premature ageing.
Eat a few Brazil nuts each day, with
your muesli or in a trail mix, to give
you a good dose of this anti-ageing
nutrient.
Red grapes
These are rich in resveratrol, a
super antioxidant with great healthpromoting and anti-ageing properties.
A study published in the journal
Science revealed resveratrol directly
activates a protein that promotes health
and longevity.
Choose organic grapes as they typically
have higher levels of resveratrol and
dont contain pesticide residue.
Kale
This is one of the best leafy greens to
help combat ageing. Its packed with
antioxidants, and vitamin C, which
protects against free radical damage.
Its sulfur compounds assist in liver

detoxification, while healthy omega-3

fats nourish the skin and help prevent
dryness and wrinkles.
Its abundant in vitamin A, an important
nutrient for eye health, and vitamin K
and calcium, needed for strong bones
and to prevent osteoporosis.
Salmon
Omega-3 essential fatty acids, found in
high levels in salmon, nourish the skin
and prevent dryness and premature
ageing. A lack of these healthy fats in
your diet will make you prone to dry
skin and wrinkles.
Omega-3s help produce the skins
natural moisture-retaining oil barrier
and improve the skins flexibility
and ability to repair. Wild salmon
has the added benefit of containing
astaxanthin, a super antioxidant that
helps combat the signs of ageing, as
well as protecting against cancer, and
heart and neurodegenerative diseases.
Turmeric
The anti-ageing and health-promoting
properties of this wonderful spice are
due to the presence of a highly effective
antioxidant called curcumin. Including
more turmeric in your diet will help
keep your brain young and healthy, as
it works to preserve your memory and
reduce the risk of Alzheimers disease.
Curcumin will also protect you from
heart disease and cancer. Turmeric is
the main ingredient in curry powder,
so eating curries more often will help
promote a healthier, younger you.
Watermelon
A build up of free radicals causes
damage to cells throughout the body,
which leads to premature ageing and
disease. The best way to combat this
is to have a diet rich in antioxidants.
Watermelon contains high levels of the
powerful antioxidant lycopene, which
has strong anti-ageing properties.
Studies show that lycopene-rich foods
help ward off heart disease and cancer.
Watermelon is also rich in vitamins
A and C, both essential antioxidant
nutrients that help keep your skin
healthy and youthful, and protect you
from age-related illnesses.

Chances Are, After The Online Job Application, No Human Eyes Will
Ever See Your Resume

Al Kamal, MBA
Arza Employment Serv Ltd
When you fill out the online job
application, your application enters a
database of applications, sometimes
called the automated applicant tracking
system, or the online application
repository. Most people know of it
as the resume black hole. How many
times have you heard of people filling
out dozens or even hundreds of online
applications without even getting one
response back!
Automated systems sort and process
the applications. If your application
isnt processed and brought to the top
of the list of applications, it simply
wont even be reviewed by human
beings.
What do you need to get to the top
of the automated list, and get past the
autobot filters designed to weed out
applicants before HR or anyone else
needs to spend any time on it?
You will need three things:
1.
Exact keywords and phrases
2.
Find jobs that closely match
your skills and abilities
3.
The right contacts to follow up
with.
Exact Keywords And Phrases
If you dont have the exact keywords
and phrases that the automated system
is looking for, your application will
fail. It is that simple. For an example,
I will assume most everyone has done
a Google search before. In the Google
search window, a person will type in a

search term and Google will deliver a

list of possible sites that relate to the
term that you typed in. Although the
algorithms are different, the automated
applicant tracking systems have, at
their heart, the very same mechanisms
and return to the employers agent,
the HR person or company recruiter,
a list of applications that have all of
the specific keywords and phrases that
they are looking for.
The irony here is that many people will
have the experience and pre-requisites
expected, but will not be in this list of
top qualified candidates because the
automated systems just wont find their
application.
Find Jobs That Closely Match Your
Skills And Abilities
As was pointed out, the automated
systems are looking for specific
keywords and phrases, it is easiest to
match those keywords when you are
applying for jobs that you really do
qualify for. But, where do you find
those perfect jobs that you are looking
for? Finding the right jobs requires
knowing where to look, and how
to get the right help finding the job
opportunities.
It is estimated that the big job boards
such as Monster, Careerbuilder, and
etc. only account for 4 to 8 percent of
all hires nationally. What that means is
that the majority of the jobs available
are not on the big job boards. Job
Search Laws can teach you exactly
where to look for the right jobs. It will
teach you how to access the hidden
job market where the competition is
significantly less, and odds are much
greater in your favour for getting hired.
Finding just the right job opportunities
will cut down the frustration factors
immensely and actually improve your
chances of interviews and job offers.
The Right Contacts To Follow Up With
Most people think that online job
application means that you cant contact
the company, and that there wont be
any human interaction until you win the
job application lottery and your name is
chosen. Frankly, this attitude keeps most
people from making the short list at the
companies that they are interested in. If
you have the first two things mentioned
above, then you need to let a real person

know it.
Companies often hire people who
are a known entity. They are friends
of someone in the company, or have
worked with someone in the past. This
is where the saying comes from, who
you know matters more that what you
know
No place is that more evident than
when it comes to getting hired. As it
turns out, knowing who to contact and
how to contact them is a key component
to becoming that known entity, and

gaining a foot up on your competition.

Most people go about contacting
someone in the company in a
completely wrong way. They usually
end up with the simple remark, if they
choose your resume, you will get a
phone call from them. That is usually
the last thing anyone hears from
the potential employers company.
Finding the right people to contact and
contacting them in the right way will
make a big difference in the employer
interest in your online job application.

How do you know if you are ready

for a new career? You're the only one
that can answer this question. It takes
a lot of soul searching for most people
while for some it's a no brainer. As a
first step, how would you answer the
following questions about your current
position and how do your answers
make you feel:

Are you excited and motivated
to go to work or are you bored?

Is your company experiencing
the effects of current economic
conditions?

How secure does your job
feel?

What is the state of your
profession across the board?

How
is
your
work
environment?

Has the scope of your
responsibilities changed in such a
way that it now limits your growth
potential?

Have you had to take on an

increased workload with no added

compensation?

Does your job negatively
affect your family life?
If you answered negatively to any of
these questions it could be you just
need a new job or a whole new career.
It probably depends on how strongly
you feel about your responses, but if a
new career is what you are looking for
here are a few actions you can take to
get you started:

Clearly
define
your
professional objective

Augment your skills to include
those needed in your new career. Take
classes, volunteer or work part-time

Be willing to relocate

Network like crazy. Use
your friends, family and professional
contacts

Practice due diligence and
make sure your research is thorough

Work on your presentation

Keep a positive attitude

Are The Canucks Changing Their Jerseys Again

Well, Trevor Linden was a co-host on
Team 1040 for a couple hours and he
talked about a lot of things: Training
Camp, expectations, Horvat, Kassian,
Odjick, better food, beverage and
music at Canucks games, fighting in
the NHL and so much more. Here is
the interview:
If that player doesn't work for you,
here is the link to it.
OK, so he doesn't like staged fights
much, and doesn't want players to
have to fight after making a huge hit...
whatever. A lot of people don't, and
I've accepted that fighting in hockey is
dying, blah blah.
Call me crazy, but what stood out to
me the most was the suggestion that
the team has looked at Johnny Canuck
jersey ideas, with Johnny being the
logo on the front. Change is coming?
Remember when the Orca was
rumored to be netted and speared back
in 2008/09 after Orca Bay Sports And
Entertainment became Canucks Sports
and Entertainment?
I had to sit down and think about this
potential change for a while. I have
decided a lot of things.
1. This team has had how many logo
/ jersey changes in their history? 13?
At what point is enough enough and
some sort of identity and continuity
established?

2. I think the current Orca logo is

fine. OK, I do want the whale to look
more bad ass in its body language and
appearance. But I guess that would
mess with the whole First Nations
theme. Screw it! Sharpen those teeth!
Insert blood like it just ate a Bruin! As
for the "VANCOUVER" on the front,
yea, I like that too. It has grown on me.
This is the best jersey they have ever
come up with. I do love the early 90's
skate jerseys too. They are very-much
a close second. This one:
Badass! I love black unis, but like I
said, the current color scheme and logo
are solid.
3. Do you really want this on the front
of the Canucks jersey:
NO NO NO NO!!!! That one needs to
become obsolete!
4. Maybe they'll revamp Johnny so he
looks more like a tough guy. I really
like the Vancouver Giants lumberjack
logo. The artist for one of Luongo's
Johnny Canuck masks really nailed
it. Once again: BADASS. That's just
my taste, but once again I revert back
to my point #1. And as a part of that, I
really didn't mind these jerseys either:
No, not so menacing (except Willie),
but you know, if we're going by history
and continuity.... (Just get that dammed
atrocious JC head coming out of the V
off the shoulders!)
