All praise is due to Allaah and His most beloved
Prophet who selected me to do this work. I humbly bow
my head in submission admitting that I could never have
done this on my own. I do hope that you the reader will
benefit others as well as yourselves and your kin.

Dear reader

A few months ago Hazrat Sayyid Zaheer Abbaas, the
copyright holder of this work requested for this topic to be
translated into English which you may now enjoy.

One Sunday morning, I took to reading this Urdu booklet
and found the information so interesting that I read it once
more without getting up from my chair.

I started to translate this booklet the moment I finished
reading the second time. Talk about dynamite in small
packages.

Dr. Y. S. Jaffer al-Qaadiri is quoted here as he says; There
are those for whom no explanation is necessary and there
are those for whom no explanation will suffice.

This is the norm, for half a glass of liquid would always
be half empty as well as half full.

By saying this, my intention is not to throw stones at
anyone. It is actually very simple if one ponders on the
meaning of the Aayat in Surah Yaseen:
Each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (according to law).
Q: 36:40
So what goes around comes around comes from the
Glorious Quraan itself.

Now that this translation has reached completion, it is
hoped that many will gain from the information which the
original author of the Urdu booklet intended to impart.

Many a person over the past few months upon hearing that
I am busy with the translating of this booklet expressed that
they would dearly love to have the English translation of
the actual Gyaarhawee itself so that the kids may
understand.

I beg to differ in that when I face Qiblah [the Kabah the
focal point of worship] for the purpose of worship, I say
Allaahu Akbar in Arabic, neither the depth nor the
enormity of which I understand, but feel. The translation
into English is God is the Greatest which I do understand
but fail to feel to the same degree.

It is despairing to see how many put a paper like the
Muslim Views amongst their shoes as they enter Mosques
to worship. It is unequivocally stated on the final page that
the paper carries Allaahs Names, names of the
Prophets and sacred verses of the Holy Quraan.

This leads me to believe that the translating of the
Gyaarhawee would indeed not serve the desired purpose.
Rather make the effort to learn a Semitic language or two
or even three.

I would be failing in my duty towards the many generous

Allaah reward all of you abundantly, here and there.

The abundantly blessed, commendable, resplendent,
spiritually uplifting and auspicious function commonly
known as THE GYAARHAWEE
SHAREEF {the noble 11
th
date} is arranged for the purpose
of the receiving of the great bounties of the Lord Most
High and to benefit those loved ones who have passed
on, on the occasion of the Urs {death anniversary of a
saint} of The spiritual guide of all saints; The
rescuer who guides one by holding ones hand and
delivering one to ones destination himself; The Lords
highest cadre in the spiritual pivot; A beloved of the
Lord; The embodiment of the Lords attributes
Hazrat Abu Muhammad Muhyuddeen Sayyiduna
Sheikh Abdul Qaadir of Jeelaan {may the Lord Most
High be pleased with him}.

In Arabia as well as all other parts of the world, all the
learned scholars, leaders and holy personalities of times
gone by have been involved in the practice and upkeep of
this auspicious commemoration.

Al-Hamdu-Lillaah this practice in the times of today is in a
very healthy state.

But in as far as those who have already stumbled off the
straight path and those who have made it their business to
reproach and taunt the friends of the Lord Almighty;
criticize and belittle them; labelling such auspicious
gatherings as sinful innovations, I am hopeful that these
truths and facts will dispel all doubts which are harboured
by such opposers of that which is determined good.

Our friend, well-soaked poet, renowned and famed
litterateur, the honourable Professor Fayyaaz Ahmed Khan
Kaawish {his nom-de-plume} presents unto you the truths
and facts on this subject from the glorious Quraan and
Hadeeth; Islaamic Jurisprudence and Sufism; Pious
ancients as well as modern thinkers.

Here he also presents evidence in support of the
Gyaarhawee Shareef, its great value and splendour
following through with detailed and referential information
on its importance and veracity.

Nature has decided that the 10
th
day and the ensuing night
before the 11
th
day be set out as more special than any other
day. Thus, to test His Prophets and Friends and then
elevate their statuses, the Lord Most High has chosen this
date repeatedly.

History is testimony that on this date; Prophet Adam
was forgiven. Prophet Noahs Ark came to rest on
Mount Judi. Prophet Abraham was saved from the fire
of Nimrod when the flames became a bouquet of flowers.
Prophet Joseph was saved from the well. Prophet
Jobs sight was restored. Prophet Moses defeated the
magicians and the army of Pharaoh was drowned. Prophet
Jonah was saved from the belly of the whale. Prophet
Abraham made preparations to sacrifice his beloved son
Prophet Ismail at the wish of the Lord Most High.

Hazrat Imaam Husain {one loved by Allaah}
sacrificed his life along with the lives of loved-ones
and dear-ones in the path of the Lord Most High.

Based on the historical importance of this date, Sayyiduna
Sheikh Sayyid Abdul Qaadir of Jeelaan used to offer
Khatam Shareef {Noble completion of a recital as an
offering} of the Master of Both Worlds, Hazrat Muhammad
Mustapha. And after receiving the bounties of the Lord
Most High, this very date was chosen as the choicest date
to celebrate and commemorate the Urs of Sayyiduna
Sheikh Sayyid Abdul Qaadir of Jeelaan.

Wow! What great status you enjoy Ya Ghauth.
The greatest amongst the greats have your
auspicious feet on their necks.

The very learned Imaam Yaafai Al Qaadiri pens; The
origin of the Gyaarhawee Shareef lies in the fact that
Hazrat Sayyid Abdul Qaadir of Jeelaan was in the habit
of commemorating the 40 days of the beloved Prophet
on the 11
th
of the fourth Islamic month, Rabi-ul-Aakhir
[also known as Rabi-uth-Thaani].



This practice became so popular and so loved by one and
all that over time, it became the norm to repeat this each
month by offering the Khatam Shareef in the auspicious
name of the beloved Prophet, resulting in this function
becoming known as the Gyaarhawee Shareef of Hazrat
Ghauth Paak.

Nowadays, Hazrat Ghauth Paaks auspicious Urs is
celebrated and commemorated on this date, the 11
th
, even
though it is common knowledge that he left this worldly
abode on the 17
th
day of Rabi-ul-Aakhir.

Because of the enthusiasm and absolute pleasure with
which Hazrat Ghauth Paak used to make arrangements
for this holy function, Allaah gave that this function
became so liked by one and all that after the demise of
Hazrat Ghauth Paak, this 11
th
date became the official
date on which to celebrate and commemorate the Urs of
Hazrat Ghauth Paak.

As it is, all other venerable saints and great religious
preceptors Uroos [plural of Urs] is celebrated on the
date of their departure but the distinct status of Hazrat
Ghauth Paak is such that his auspicious Urs is
celebrated on the 11
th
of each month.

The very learned scholar Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Haq {well
versed scholar in the Traditions of the beloved Prophet}
[hereafter referred to as: Muhaddith] of Delhi {passed on
in 1051} who was the most knowledgeable personality
concerning the Glorious Quraan and Hadeeth amongst the
Ulama {the learned} of his time, writes; We have known
our leading Imaam and accomplished Gnostic, the very
pious Sheikh Abdul Wah-haab Al Qaadiri to be very
punctual and highly protective (custodious) over the
Gyaarhawee Shareef.

In addition to this, other leaders in our cities too displayed
their fondness for the Gyaarhawee Shareef, terming it to be
a practice praiseworthy.

The Gyaarhawee Shareef of Sayyiduna Ghauth Paak is
not only celebrated and commemorated in Pakistan but has
for decades now been at the fore-front of the activities of
the venerable saints inside and outside of Arabia, the
evidence of which was given in India by the one who was
first to give testimony and to propagate the knowledge of
the Traditions of the beloved Prophet, Hazrat Sheikh
Abdul Haq [Muhaddith] (the well versed scholar in the
Traditions of the beloved Prophet) of Delhi.

Indeed, the Gyaarhawee of Hazrat Ghauth Paak is famed
throughout the lands (India) nowadays ----- and this very
date, the 11
th
, is widely known by his offspring and his
followers. The very learned and pious Sheikh Abdul Wah-
haab of Makkah along with his followers too, used to
offer the Khatam (completion) of this Gyaarhawee Shareef
regularly. {Ma-thabata-bis-Sunnah, page 68}

Similarly, Shah Abdul Aziz, the Muhaddith of Delhi who
is the teacher of all the learned scholars of India as well as
Pakistan, says about the Gyaarhawee Shareef of Hazrat
Ghauth Paak in an official statement; The kings,
dignitaries and the notables etc. of the city would gather at
the shrine of Hazrat Ghauth Paak. After performing Asr
Salaah [the late-afternoon prayer], they would recite the

Glorious Quraan followed by poetry in the honour of
Hazrat Ghauth Paak [known as Manaaqib] until Maghrib
[the evening prayer].

After Maghrib, the disciples would assemble in a circle
around the spiritual successor and recite Zikr in an audible
manner. Some would experience ecstasy. Following the
completion, food and something sweet would be offered.
This would culminate in the performance of Isha Salaah
[late night prayer] and the crowd would then disperse.

In this very same manner, the respected teacher of the
Moghul Emperor Aurang Zeb Aalamgir, Ustaad Mulla
Jiwans son has presented evidence about the Gyaarhawee
Shareef in Wahee-zus-Siraat, likewise did the very
learned Sarwar of Lahore in Khazeena-tul-Asfiya volume
No. 1, on page 99. So also did Prince Dara Shikwa in
Safeena-tul-Owliyaa on page 72, so too did Hazrat Shah
Abdul Maali in Tohfa-e-Qadiriyyah on page 90.

It has been proven by the testimony of the venerable sages
and religious preceptors that the Gyaarhawee Shareef is not
a new phenomenon. It is however an old tradition of the
forefathers (ancestors): and the beloved Prophet has said
about the following of the path as set out by the respected
pious;


.

In the books on the principles of Islamic Jurisprudence one
will find;




Therefore the respected scholars and the great leaders of
yesteryear have been keen to celebrate and commemorate
the Gyaarhawee Shareef.

Gyaarhawee Shareef is the name given to the compendium
of good deeds as the following details will show:

1 Recitation of the Glorious Quraan.

2 Benedictions, Salutations and greetings unto the
beloved Prophet.

3 Supervision of Azkaar (plural of Zikr) and
contemplation in a gathering.

4 The conveying of rewards for virtuous deeds through
the medium of the venerable names of the friends of
Allaah Almighty, especially Hazrat Sheikh Sayyid Abdul
Qaadir of Jeelaan, the leader of all the Saints.

5 Distribution of something sweet as well as food. All
these deeds attain to become closer to Allaah Almighty
and they earn for us safety and abundant blessings.

The importance of each of these acts is mentioned in the
Glorious Quraan and evidence is found in the Hadeeth as
well:

a) The one who recites the Glorious Quraan receives the
reward of ten good deeds for every letter recited.

b) In this same manner, ten mercies of the Lord Almighty
descend upon the one who recites the Salawaat upon the
beloved Prophet.

c) The chaste Islamic Creed is in essence and significance
heavier than seven heavens and seven earths, the utterance
of which has the importance of such magnitude that the
Lord Almighty boasts its glory unto the angels and the
beloved Prophet has mentioned that the assembly of Zikr
is likened unto the flower-beds of Paradise.

The Islamic Creed reads:

No Deity worthy of worship exists but Allaah
Muhammad is the messenger of Allaah

d) The conveying of rewards unto the dear departed souls is
abundantly evident in the Glorious Quraan and the
Ahadeeth (plural of Hadeeth).

Thus, the prayers and well-wishes of those alive unto those
departed; the prayers and well-wishes of the Prophets
unto those communities to come; those in existence as well
as those to come, the prayers and well-wishes of the Angels
unto the dwellers on the earth is mentioned in the Glorious
Quraan and the Ahaadeeth in many places. This leaves no
room for any doubt or suspicion.

The sending of rewards unto those who have passed on is
among the habits of the beloved Prophet, his
companions, venerable saints and the pious elders of
times gone by.

Thus, is reported from the Mother of the believers Hazrat
Bibi Aaishah Siddeeqah that: A person said to the
beloved Prophet; My mother is no more and I have
feelings that were she alive, she would have given
something in charity. Would she benefit should I give
charity on her behalf? On hearing this, the beloved
Prophet responded; Yes.

In relation to this Hadeeth, Sheikh Abdul Haq, the
Muhaddith of Delhi in Lamaat writes: This Hadeeth
proves that the deceased do in fact benefit from the charity
given on their behalf and this is the faith of those who truly
believe.

In addition too this, Mulla Ali Qaari details this Hadeeth
amongst his legal verdicts;

It was three days after the infant son of the beloved Prophet
Hazrat Sayyiduna Ibraheem had passed on when Hazrat
Abu Zarr paid the beloved Prophet a visit.

He had with him some dry dates, camel milk and barley
bread. He presented these to the beloved Prophet.
The beloved Prophet recited Surah Faatihah once
followed by Surah Ikhlaas three times and then prayed in
the following manner;



The beloved Prophet then raised his hands rubbing over
his auspicious face; asking Hazrat Abu Zarr to
distribute the offerings saying; May the reward of this
offering reach my son Ibraheem.
{Fataawa Al Auz Jandi of Mulla Ali Al Qaari Al Hanafi}

This Hadeeth proves that to give Khatam over eatables and
then to distribute the same amongst people is not only
permissible but is the habit of the beloved Prophet
himself.

This also proves that it benefits the dear departed souls.
This manner of offering is still in vogue today.

In the Gyaarhawee Shareef, it is no different. The food is
prepared. The Glorious Quraan is recited over it and these
efforts, through the medium of the beloved Prophet are
presented unto the blessed soul of Hazrat Ghauth Paak.

Now we will present the legal verdict of one such
personality who is the teacher and the spiritual guide of
Maulana Ashraf Ali Thaanawi, Maulawi Rasheed Ahmed
Gangohi and Maulawi Khaleel Ahmed Ambethawi, by the
name of Hajji Imdadullaah Mahaajir of Makkah, who
writes:

None object to the fact that the deceased benefit from
blessings sent unto them ...

The ancestors had the habit to cook food; feed the needy,
and they used to do this by making the intention that their
efforts should benefit those gone by.

Later

Someone thought, like it is sufficient to make the intention
for Namaaz (worship) in ones heart in the same manner,
it would be better should one utter; O Almighty Allaah
please pass the benefits of our offerings and efforts unto so
and so. Then someone else thought it better if the person
for whom the benefit is intended be present, triggering
sincerity. Some thought it to be merely a prayer and if
some verses of the Glorious Quraan be added, there would
be more chance of acceptance.

In Juristic terms;



They then started to recite some Surah or another from the
Glorious Quraan ..

Some thought it is the habit of the beloved Prophet to
raise ones hands when asking Allaah Almighty for
something and started to practice doing so.
Others again thought it a good idea to supply water with the
food to the needy, being an act of virtue; to quench the
thirst of another will surely earn blessings. They started
supplying water with the food so as to add more rewards to
their efforts. Similar advantages and rewards are to be
found in and for every action, the details of which are too
lengthy for the topic at hand.

The foregoing statements are merely a short summary of
explanations. A thinking person will understand upon
pondering.

THE KEY TO IT ALL!

Those who object to the Gyaarhawee Shareef say when
confronted with the truth and fact, that; We mean only to
caution as a safety measure. Such persons should ponder
on the passage written by Imaam Shaami which reads;

Translation: Caution is not that which is exercised upon an
act which has no legal evidence as prohibited or distasteful.
This is tantamount to slandering Allaah Almighty. It is
however better to call it permissible for in essence it is
permitted. The beloved Prophet himself, though he is
the law-giver, did not classify wine (the mother of all filth)
as prohibited until the command of Allaah Almighty
came;

Q: 16:116

Translation: But say not . For any false thing that your
tongues may put forth, - This is lawful, and this is
forbidden, so as to ascribe false things to God. For those
who ascribe false things to God, will never prosper.

In the times of ignorance, a time before the advent of Islam,
some used to declare the lawful as forbidden and vice versa
according to their own whims and fancies. Some even used
to go as far as claiming falsely that Allaah Almighty
declared it so. Likewise some nowadays declare forbidden
that which is permitted of their own will. The foregoing
verse was revealed to prohibit their doing so.

As a result thereof, those things attributed as good or bad in
the Glorious Quraan are good or bad as per the declaration
of Allaah Almighty Himself, and those matters or
things which are not identified or clarified either way, are
forgiven, permitted and lawful to us. Terming those as
forbidden, sinful and innovative without just proof is
tantamount to slandering the chaste laws as laid down by
the beloved Prophet and is a gravely false accusation.

The above passage should suffice for those who oppose the
Gyaarhawee Shareef.

The outcome is that the Gyaarhawee Shareef is loved by,
preferred by, and has been in continuous practice by
countless [Ulama-e-kiraam] Respected Scholars and the
[Sulaha-e-ummat] Pious Sages and the Virtuous
Personalities from amongst the followers of the beloved
Prophet. Their followers have been trained in this
manner. Should this ceremony have been in any way
contrary to the habits of the beloved Prophet, they would
have remained at arms length from it.

Moreover, these great [Jaleel-ul-qadr ulama] scholars and
[Azeemul-martabat Sufiya] stately mystics kept up this
practice; and one would be hard-pressed to find any who
object to the quality of their knowledge and expertise. No
matter how much a person learns and achieves in the times
of today, they would be unable to reach the status of being
counted amongst the students of these great scholars of
yesteryear. Were those scholars then unaware and oblivious
to the teachings of the Glorious Quraan and the ways and
traditions of the beloved Prophet? No! Not at all!

On the contrary, their chests were illuminated with the
enlightened knowledge of Allaah Almighty and the
Divine Light of inner-faith. These personalities were very
well-versed in worldly affairs as well and were completely
practical in their approach. Thus we should try to emulate
these great scholars in the matters of the Gyaarhawee
Shareef.

Hazrat Shah Wali-ullaah the Muhaddith of Delhi writes
that Hazrat Mazhar Jaan-e-Jaanaa has said; I saw in a
dream a vast terrace on which many friends of Allaah
Almighty busied themselves in a circle, contemplating
and worshipping their Lord Most High. Hazrat Khwaajah
Naqshband was seated at the centre of this circle and
Hazrat Junaid of Baghdad was leaning against a pillow. It
was evident that his person was engrossed, unaware of
himself, giving total attention only to his Lord Most
High. All of them suddenly rose to their feet and
moved along in one direction. I questioned as to what was
happening and someone said to me that they are all going
to receive the leader of the believers Hazrat Ali (May
Allaah Almighty bless his countenance). Hazrat Ali
arrived. With him was an elder, dressed in a blanket,
bare-headed and bare-foot whose hair was unruly. Hazrat
Ali held the elders hand with great tenderness, respect
and care, holding his hands in his own. I enquired as to
the identity of the elder and was told that he is the best
amongst the Tabaeen (those following after the
Companions, the Sahaabah). His name is Hazrat
Owais of Qaran.

After this, a chamber came into view which was gleaming
with cleanliness. Divine Light was showering onto it. All
these pious, virtuous and venerable saints entered this
chamber.

I asked about this chamber and was informed that it was
Hazrat Ghauth Paaks Urs (Death anniversary as
meeting with The Beloved) today. They have all gone to
attend. {Kalimaat-e-Tayyibaat [in Persian] page 78}




O highest Cadre in the spiritual pivot O greatest
Rescuer amongst the Saints
O friend of Allaah Almighty O enlightened soul

Your slave is hapless and has no-one to guide him/her by
his/her hand,
except you

I am but a beggar at your auspicious door
O great one.

I find myself unfortunate; please change my lot,
O chief of the Saintly

In answer to one of the questions about the method of
offering Faatehah at a Gyaarhawee Shareef, Alaa Hazrat
Imaam Ahmed Raza Khan of Bareili writes on page 244
in Eh-kaam-e-Shareeat: It is customary in our family
that we commence with the Darood-e-Ghauthiyah seven
times, follow this with Surah Faatehah and Aayatul Kursi,
then Surah Ikhlaas seven times. This is followed by
Darood-e-Ghauthiyah three times.

The Darood-e-Ghauthiyah is as follows;

Verily! You and only you are set on my lips, in my eyes
and in my heart. Enough for me are you my love,
my spiritual guide!
I am immersed in the loving images of your being in every
moment. You are forever between my eyelashes and
I always pine for you, my spiritual guide!
Please grace me with a glimpse of your person in my
dreams. Please enter my dreams from time to time,
my spiritual guide!
I remember well those enjoyable moments spent in your
auspicious company. May I never ever forget those
moments even absent-mindedly. If only I could have you in
front of me every moment and at all times,
my spiritual guide!
Whenever I am troubled or saddened, enough for me would
be to remember your beloved name, my spiritual guide!
My heart yearns for none other but you. My eyes are
always moist in your memory, my spiritual guide!
Granted! Every Friend of the Creator Most High is
unique. I have made my choice. My choice, my voice,
