How Were Our Islands
Made?
The Hawaiian island chain was made by the
Hawaiian hotspot. The hotspot does not
move. The pacific plate does. The pacific
plate carries the islands away from the hot
spot. As each island was formed, it was
carried away from the hotspot and another
island started to form in it's place.
Compared to the 4.5
billion year old earth,
the Hawaiian islands
are very young. the
oldest major
Hawaiian island is
Kauai. It was
formed over the
hotspot six million
years ago. The
pacific plate drifted
away from the
hotspot and the
Kauai volcanoes died
out making them
extinct. The hot spot
made another volcano
rise in its place to
create the next island
known as Oahu
which is where I live.

This process repeated itself and created a
chain of similar islands. The volcanoS on the
islands of Oahu also died out. Maui is still
close enough to the hotspot so it still has
one dormant volcano. Dormant means that
the volcano hasn't erupted in awhile but it
still can erupt someday. People who study
volcanos predict that Maui's volcano will
erupt again within the next 100 years.
The island of Hawaii which is also known
as the Big Island is the youngest island
because it was formed Last and still has
three active volcanos that are erupting
today. A new island is forming under the
ocean floor. This new island formation
was found recently and is being called
Loihi. We will not be able to see this
island finished because it is expected to
take over 10,000 years to form!

Ualaka'a: $e Ro%ing Sweet
Potato Hi%?
We went to Ualaka'a State Park on September 11,
2013. Kumu Andy lead us on this field trip. He
renewed our Junior Ranger licenses from K-1. He
taught us about different plants and invasive
species like Cat's Claw. He also taught us that
Ualaka'a means rolling sweet potato in Hawaiian. In
the old days, the Hawaiians planted sweet potatos
on this hill and they would roll them down when
they were ready to eat. While we were hiking
through the trees, we found a baby Jackson
Chameleon. It was sort of hiding on a tree
branch. We got to keep the Jackson chameleon in
our classroom!
The first field trip of second grade was
awesome! We learned a lot, we saw a
beautiful view of diamond head crater and
we got to spend time with our new
classmates. It was a lot of fun to spend time
in nature and see things like leaf skeletons.

On September 18, 2013 my class went
to Bellows Beach for our second
grade class picnic. Bellows is on a
military base so it was special for us
to get to go. At bellows we jumped
over waves. Emma T and I also made
a sand castle. We also made a pool
and were dumping water in the pool.
The water kept flowing out so it did
not work very well as a pool to swim
in. We found a crab and we made it
our guard! The crab was very good
at pinching and holding on to people.
We found another crab later. Emma
and I left to get water and people
destroyed our sand castle! My mom
and dad both came to my class
picnic, It was such a fun day!

Why #d we go to Makiki
Stream?
Our second field trip was on September 19, 2013.
This field trip was different than most of our
other field trips because we walked from our
classroom to the field trip site. It took us about
ten minutes to walk to Makiki Stream. Once we
got there, we split into two groups. Half of the
class went down in the stream and the other half
picked up trash in the surrounding area.
Kumu Andy, Kumu Tai and
Kumu Peiterson helped out!

Why #d ' m&siona(!
come to Hawaii?
Our class visited the Mission House Museum on
October 3, 2013. We learned that the missionaries
came to Hawaii in the early 1700s through the late
1800's. Missionaries came by boat to the Hawaiian
Islands. The first 14 missionaries to come to Hawaii
were Presbyterians. They came to Hawaii because
they wanted to teach Hawaiians their skills and
religions like speaking English, reading and writing.
The missionaries had to use a printing press
instead of a typewriter or computer like we use
today. It was a very difficult process, first you had
to make stamps of the things you wanted to say or
print out then you had to put the paper under the
printer, then you had to put ink on the stamp then
put the stamp into position and and press it down
to the paper. Once the ink transferred on to the
paper, you had to pull the paper out and then you
had to use a tool to hang it up on the wall to dry.

How do! Ho'omaluhia help
its surr)n#ng community?
When we went to Ho'omaluhia
Botanical Garden on October 15,
2013. We saw beautiful plants,
trees and flowers. We also saw a
lot of ducks and birds! The whole
property was 32 acres! The pond
catches a lot of the rain run off to
help keep Kaneohe from flooding.
We spend the most of our time
learning to fish the old fashioned
way with bamboo poles. We used
sweet bread, white bread, corn
and gummy worms as bait. The
breads were the most popular with
the fish!

How #d Hanauma Bay *t
it's name?
On November 7, 2013 my class and I went
to Hanauma Bay. We learned that
"Hanauma" means curved in Hawaiian so
Hanauma Bay means curved bay
because of the way the bay is shaped. I
was lucky that my mom could come on
this fun field trip! We got to do a
scavenger hunt down near the waters
edge. We saw tons of sea life like
turtles,fish and crabs! I also saw a
parrot fish,manini,trumpet fish and a
trigger fish. We had a clipboard with a
list of species on it to look for and to
help us know what each species was
called. Once we hiked back up to the
classroom we learned about marine
trash. We also learned about different
Eco systems in the ocean.

We visited the Hawaii Plantation Village on
January 7, 2014. We learned a lot about
immigration and the workers of the sugar
plantations. We learned that the plantation
workers were not called by their names, they
called were called by a number. They had
special cards or tags that were different
shapes depending on their heritage. Even kids
had these cards for working! There was a
special call number for kids. We learned that
the plantation workers worked very hard for
very long hours six days a week! They were
not given sick days either, and they only made
three dollars a month. While we were visiting
Hawaii Plantation Village we got to dress up in
the clothing the workers would wear
depending on their heritage. I dressed up as a
Japanese plantation worker. We also got to
play milk cap covers which was a game the
plantation children would play.

Why #d +ey make a hokule'a?
On January 30, 2014 my class was very lucky
to get to go visit the Hokule'a while she was
docked on Oahu. The Hokule'a is named after
a star. They named it after a star because in
the ancient Hawaiian times the Hawaiians
navigated their boats at night by using the
stars. We learned about the different places on
the canoe. The back of the hokule'a is called
the stern and the front is called the bow. We
got to see underneath the canoe and learn
about the world wide voyage the Hokule'a is
going on start this year. I can't wait to hear all
about it's trip all over the world!

What #d we see on
Makapu'u Ligh+)se trail?

We hiked the makapu'u lighthouse trail on
March 4, 2014. While we were on the bus
on the way to the hike we started to see
whale spouts out in the water! While we
were hiking we saw a pod of whales
swimming around the island. We also saw
beautiful trees and plants along side the
trail. We saw dandilions and we got to
blow them to make wishes! We walked
quickly because we had to make it to the
top by 9:45 am so that we could make it
back down in time to catch the bus back
to school to eat in the cafeteria! We got
to the top at 9:36! Our class went on the
field trip with Mrs. Yee's class called the
chili beans. On our hike back down, we
saw two spiders! One was yellow and one
was black. My mom came on this field trip
too!

What #d we do at '
Makapu'u tide pools?
When we went to Makapu'u tide pools as a
class on April 14, 2014. When we got there
we got off the bus and got split into
different groups of about five kids with one
high school counselor. We went in the water
and found little sea creatures like lobsters,
Spanish dancers, sea slugs, fish and crabs.
We also found four cowrie shells, one had a
crab inside called a hermit crab. After we
were done looking for sea creatures we got
to help pick up trash at the surrounding
beach park. We found a lot of bottle caps,
plastic bags and sea glass. Before we went
back on the bus we had to take our reef
walkers off so we did not get the bus all
slippery and wet! When we were walking
back to the bus I stepped on three pokies!
It hurt!
