Federal Grants
Federal Pell Grant
The Pell Grant is one of the most popular types of federal financial
aid. For many students, a Pell Grant provides the foundation onto
which other types of financial aid may be added. You are not
required to pay back a Pell Grant after you graduate, and only
undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's degree
(four-year college degree) or a professional degree are eligible to
receive a Pell Grant.

To apply for a Pell Grant, you must complete a Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can apply only at FAFSA on the
Web. When you submit your FAFSA, the U.S. Department of
Education uses a formula developed by congress to evaluate your
eligibility. This standard formula produces an Expected Family
Contribution (EFC). A Student Aid Report (SAR) containing your EFC
and other important information will be mailed to your home. Each
college you listed on your FAFSA will receive your EFC
electronically.

The maximum Pell Grant for the 2008-2009 academic year is

expected to be $4,731 based on anticipated federal funding levels.
The amount of money you will be eligible for depends on your EFC,
Cost of Attendance (COA), and Enrollment Status. You can receive
only one Pell Grant during any academic year, and you cannot
receive Pell Grant funds at more than one college at a time.

Alice Lloyd College will process your financial aid and present you
with a Financial Aid Package once your enrollment has been verified
by our Admissions Office. Your financial aid package will explain the
amount of your Pell Grant and any other financial aid that you are
eligible to receive for the current academic year. The Pell Grant will
be paid at least once per term (semester) as long as you maintain
Satisfactory Academic Progress (PDF/25KB) and meet all other
eligibility requirements.

Federal Supplemental Educational

Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
A Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is
for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need-that is,
students with the lowest Expected Family Contribution (EFC).
Priority is given to students who receive the Federal Pell Grant. An
FSEOG does not have to be paid back.

The U.S. Department of Education guarantees that each

participating school will receive enough money to pay the Federal
Pell Grants of its eligible students. There is no guarantee every
eligible student will be able to receive an FSEOG; students at ALC
will be awarded an FSEOG based on the availability of funds.
The amount of a FSEOG award will vary from college to college for
the 2008-2009 academic year, depending on when you apply, your
level of need, and other financial resources assisting you in
attending college. The FSEOG will be paid at least once per term
(semester) as long as you maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress
(PDF/25KB) and meet all other FSEOG

Institutional Grants and Scholarships

Minority Grant
Alice Lloyd College offers a room and board guarantee for qualified
minority students from its 108 county Central Appalachian service
area. This grant is awarded for a total of 10 semesters, provided
that reasonable progress is made toward the completion of a
degree. The guarantee is met through a combination of federal,
state, and institutional grants and earnings from participation in the
Student Work Program.

Minimum Criteria for Minority Grants:

• Be a United States citizen and a resident of the 108-

county service area
• Complete a separate scholarship application and write
an essay on "Why I would like to attend Alice Lloyd College
on a Minority Scholarship"
• Have a processed Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA) and be accepted for admission
• Demonstrate financial need
• Maintain a "C" average after the second year to be able
to renew the scholarship
• The application for the Minority Scholarship is available
through the Admissions Office

Appalachian Leaders College Scholarship

Alice Lloyd College awards tuition guarantees for residents of 108
Central Appalachian counties, regardless of income, who are eligible
for admission. Students for this special service area will have their
cost of education (tuition) met by a combination of grants,
scholarships, and participation in a required Student Work Program.
The scholarship is renewable for 10 semesters upon maintaining
satisfactory progress toward completion of a degree.

Minimum Criteria for Appalachian Leaders College Scholarship:

• Resident in the 108-county service area

• 2.25 high school GPA (in core curriculum classes)
• 17 composite ACT score
 • 12 core curriculum credits (minimum)

Alice Lloyd College Distinguished Scholar's

Program
The Alice Lloyd College Distinguished Scholar's Program provides
academic scholarships for a select number of students from our 108
Central Appalachian county service area who have a commitment to
service in the Appalachian region. The scholarship covers the full
cost of education while attending ALC, provides money toward
books, and ensures continued assistance throughout graduate
and/or professional school. The amount of assistance while in
graduate and/or professional school varies depending on the course
of study and the school of attendance.

Minimum Criteria for Alice Lloyd College Distinguished Scholar's

Program:

• 3.5 high school GPA (in core curriculum classes)

• 27 composite ACT score or 1820 composite New SAT
score
• Exemplary character as evidenced by outstanding
leadership and/or community service

Alice Lloyd College Endowed Scholarships

Due to the generosity of alumni, staff, trustees, churches, societies,
businesses, foundations, and countless friends across America,
students from the 108-county service area in central Appalachia
may attend Alice Lloyd College regardless of financial
circumstances. Tuition is guaranteed through several sources, but
in particular through endowed scholarships that produce income to
fund the supreme financial aid packages available to qualified
students. The following scholarships are awarded annually, and
donors receive detailed reports along with personal letters from
students who benefit from the funds.

The Kenneth Allen Endowed Scholarship, an academic

scholarship; renewable through graduation; financial need is not a
consideration; resume required.

The Hattie Bailey Endowed Scholarship, for students from

Eastern Kentucky counties.

The H. N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation Scholarship, for

students pursuing advanced, professional degrees in medical fields.

Caney Cottage Scholarship, for students continuing their

educations toward advanced, professional degrees.

The Doll Blair Memorial Scholarship, for students from Letcher

County or Knott County, Kentucky.

The Pauline Bowling Endowed Scholarship, for students from

the ALC service area.

The Teamus Bowling Endowed Scholarship, an academic

scholarship; preference will be given to Eagle Scouts (interest in
science; willingness to help others; ambitious; practical; persistent;
good citizenship (Scout Law); resume required.)

Alfred and Shirley Caudill Endowed Scholarship, to assist with

expenses of an Executive in Residence or students involved in Phi
Beta Lambda.

Gordon E. Caudill Endowed Scholarship, for students from the

ALC service area.

The Charles F. Clark Scholarship, preference given to students

from Floyd County, Kentucky, majoring in education.
The Willard H. Clatworthy Scholarship in memory of Monroe
and Golda Maggard Wicker, for students who are gifted
scholastically; financially needy; preferably from one of these
Kentucky counties: Knott, Floyd, Johnson, Martin, Pike, Letcher,
Breathitt, Perry, Maggoffin, Harlan.

The Hollie Conley Scholarship, for a Floyd County freshman;

academic excellence; financial need; preference will be given to
pre-law students.

The Jerry C. Davis Endowed Scholarship, for students from the

ALC or JBS service area; financial need; any class rank; minimum
3.0 GPA; may be renewed up to 4 years or until graduation.

The Jesse and Margaret Dutra Endowed Scholarship, for

needy and deserving students.

The Samuel and Edna Enix Endowed Scholarship, for needy

Appalachian students; preferrably from Eastern Kentucky.

The George J. Eyrick, Jr. Pre-Engineering Scholarship, for

students planning to enter the engineering field.

The Mary Ann Fain Endowed Scholarship, for students within

the ALC service area.

The Grace Edith Farr Memorial Scholarship Fund, for students

within the ALC service area.

The Isaac and Imogene Fugate Endowed Scholarship, for

students within the ALC service area; financial need; any class
rank; minimum 3.0 GPA; renewable up to 4 years or until
graduation.

The James and Virginia Goble Endowed Scholarship, for

students within the ALC service area with 1st preference to Floyd
County, 2nd preference to Kentucky; financial need; any class rank
minimum 3.0 GPA, renewable up to 4 years or until graduation.

The W. R. Griffin Endowed Scholarship, for students from

Eastern Kentucky counties within the ALC service area.

The Ben Hall Endowed Scholarship, for Floyd County, Kentucky,

students; non-academic basis; financial need; renewable up to 4
years.

The Palmer L. Hall Living Endowment Fund, to provide

scholarships for students who are decendants of the Hall family
and/or from Floyd County, Kentucky.

The Garnet Hartry Endowed Scholarhship, an academic

scholarship; minimum 3.0 GPA; renewable for 3 years; financial
need a consideration; resume and references required.

The William S. Hayes Endowed Scholarship, for students from

Eastern Kentucky Counties within the ALC service area; financial
need; any class rank; minimum 3.0 GPA; renewable up to 4 years
or until graduation.

The Richard E. and Carolyn V. Hilligoss Endowed Scholarship

in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Schneider, for students
enrolled in English, Literature or Drama classes or involved in a
drama production.

The Richard E. and Carolyn V. Hilligoss Endowed Scholarship

in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Hilligoss, for students who
are members of the Voices of Appalachia or enrolled in music
courses.

The Andrea Hover Endowed Scholarship, for students enrolled

in the Voices of Appalachia, who play musical instruments, or have
musical backgrounds.
The Buena Howell Endowed Scholarship, for biology majors
with a 3.0 GPA or better.

The Erna E. Jamieson Endowed Scholarhsip, for students within

the ALC service area; financial need; any class rank; minimum 3.0
GPA; renewable up to 4 years or until graduation.

The Ordell Ray Johnson Fund, an academic scholarship for

students from Pike, Floyd, Martin, Knott, Johnson counties in
Kentucky or Mingo, Logan, Wayne counties in WV; renewable for 3
years; financial need a consideration; resume and references
required.

The Mary A. B. DuPont Laird Scholarship, for students within

the ALC service area.

The J. Onis Leonard Endowed Scholarship, for students within

the ALC service area.

The Loraine Burton McGuire Endowed Scholarship, for

students within the ALC service area; preference will be given to
Carter County; financial need; any class rank; minimum 3.0 GPA;
renewable up to 4 years or until graduation.

The Ruth Schweyer Moran Scholarship, for students within the

ALC service area.

The National Presbyterian Church Women's Association

Scholarship, for students with financial need; participation in
school, community, and church activities will be a consideration;
references required.

The Frances and Russell Newton Endowed Scholarship, for

students within the ALC service area; financial need; any class
rank; minimum 3.0 GPA; renewable up to 4 years or until
graduation.
The Dorothy M. Okert Scholarship, for female business
administration majors.

The Billie and Curtis Owens Endowed Scholarship for Cordia

High School Students, for Cordia High School students; financial
need; any class rank; minimum 3.0 GPA; renewable up to 4 years
or until graduation.

The Owsley-Shrout Scholarship, for students within the ALC

service area; financial need; any class rank; minimum 3.0 GPA;
renewalable up to 4 years or until graduation.

The Pleas B. Park and Jason K. Williams Scholarship, for

students within the ALC service area.

The Sarah Music Laven Memorial Purpose Road Scholarship,

for Floyd County students; selection process will be prior to
fall/spring enrollment.

Rebecca Reed Endowed Scholarship, for students within the

ALC service area; financial need; any class rank; minimum 2.5
GPA; no athletes; renewable up to 4 years or until graduation;
candidates must submit written statements of why they need the
scholarship; the Reed family chooses recipients from candidates.

The Edwin and Dorothy Coburn Reffett Scholarship, for

students within the ALC service area.

The Bill and Elaine Richards Endowed Scholarship, for

students within the ALC service area; financial need; any class
rank; minimum 3.0 GPA; renewable up to 4 years or until
graduation.

The Beatrix A. Rose Memorial Scholarship, for students within

the ALC service area.
The Pearl and Jesse Savage Endowed Scholarship, for
students within the ALC service area; financial need; any class
rank; minimum 3.0 GPA; renewable up to 4 years or until
graduation.

The John G. Schwartz Endowed Scholarship, for students

within the ALC service area; financial need; any class rank;
minimum 3.0 GPA; renewable up to 4 years or until graduation.

The Mike and Shelia Sloane Honor Scholarship, for students

from the Blackey, Isom, and Jeremiah communities of Letcher
County, Kentucky.

The William and Sarah Smith Endowed Scholarship, for

students within the ALC service area; financial need; any class
rank; minimum 3.0 GPA; renewable up to 4 years or until
graduation.

The Harold and Mary Snook Endowed Scholarship, for

students within the ALC service area; financial need; any class
rank; minimum 3.0 GPA; renewable up to 4 years or until
graduation.

The Stamler Scholarship, preference will be given to students

from Bourbon or Nicholas counties, Kentucky, but can be awarded
to others if there are no candidates in those areas.

The David and JoAnn Stuart Scholarship, preference will be

given to students who attended Red Bird Mission School in Leslie
County, Kentucky.

The Ralph and Jewell Turner Endowed Scholarship, for

students within the ALC service area; financial need; any class
rank; minimum 3.0 GPA; renewable up to 4 years or until
graduation.
The Ella C. Vogt Endowed Scholarship, for students within the
ALC service area; financial need; any class rank; minimum 3.0
GPA; renewable up to 4 years or until graduation.

The Rilda S. Watson Scholarship, preference will be given to

Knott County, Kentucky, education majors.

The J. Keller and Bertha Whitaker Endowed Scholarship, for

students within the ALC service area; financial need; any class
rank; minimum 3.0 GPA; renewable up to 4 years or until
graduation.

The Robert and Sharon Wilhelm Endowed Scholarship, for

students within the ALC service area; must be a Christian; financial
need; any class rank; demonstrate a noble effort in classroom and

Student Work Program
Work has been a central part of the Alice Lloyd College experience
since the College's founding in 1923 when Alice Lloyd developed her
own financial aid program that required all students to work.
Students worked to provide needed services for the College
community and also to provide the opportunity to pay for their
education. Today, the Student Work Program is intended to be not
only an earning experience but a learning experience as well. It is
designed to teach students the meaning of responsible leadership,
self-discipline, and self-reliance. It also enhances the total
educational program through the teaching of skills, responsibilities,
attitudes, and habits associated with work. Requiring students to
work is truly a distinctive feature of Alice Lloyd College, and so
committed is the College to the concept of student labor that
successful completion of the work requirement is a graduation
requirement. The program requires every full-time student to work
a minimum of 160 hours per semester at an on-campus or off-
campus job. These jobs are varied and all students are paid at the
prevailing minimum wage rate. All on-campus jobs are necessary to
the normal operations of the College and the off-campus jobs help
provide needed services in the surrounding communities.

With an average enrollment of about 550 students, T
Albert Nerken School of Engineering is the largest of
Cooper Union's schools. The Nerken School maintai
small class and laboratory enrollment to ensure
personal attention. Top-ranked in undergraduate
engineering, the Nerken School offers degree progra
in civil, chemical, mechanical and electrical engineer
an interdisciplinary B.E. degree and a general B.S.E
degree. The B.E. degrees in civil, chemical, mechan
and electrical engineering are all ABET accredited.

Graduates are recruited regularly by companies

nationwide. Alumni are found in the top managemen
and research leadership of many American
corporations, hold key positions in federal, state and
agencies, and distinguish themselves on university
faculties and administrations nationwide. Through th
many and varied professional accomplishments, they
exemplify Cooper Union's reputation for excellence.

Degree programs are designed to allow students to

enter the profession immediately after graduation or
pursue graduate study. The B.S.E. program offers a
less specialized education and provides a superb
preparation for postgraduate work in medicine, law o
business. The integrated master's program offers the
opportunity to earn both a bachelor's and a master's
degree in four or five years. An extraordinary numbe
Cooper Union graduates have gone on to earn Ph.D
degrees at the nation's most prestigious graduate
schools.

Like Cooper Union's other schools, the Albert Nerken

School of Engineering is intimately involved with the
New York metropolitan area. The School draws on th
region's abundant talent and resources, including the
outstanding array of engineers and scientists employ
at major corporations, governmental agencies and
consulting firms in the New York region. The School
also calls on physicians, lawyers and other specialist
give unique insights into contemporary problems and
social issues confronting modern engineers.

Students benefit from close contact with faculty and

School's devoted alumni, who are pleased to share t
experiences and insights with students and in servin
role models. Many undergraduate students also work
significant research projects with faculty, an unusual
feature in most undergraduate programs.

The curriculum focuses around three basic values:

technological and scientific competence, balance
between theory and practice, and consideration of th
societal and holistic aspects of engineering. First-yea
students, regardless of major, take the same core
curriculum in the fundamentals of mathematics,
chemistry, physics and computer-aided design, as w
as liberal arts courses. The first-year program feature
unique design course in which students work in grou
toward solving urban problems, such as traffic gridlo
and solid waste disposal.

In the second year, students begin engineering cours

work. Third and fourth-year students take part in
individual and team design projects in state-of-the-ar
laboratories. They also take advanced courses offere
in four major disciplines: civil, chemical, electrical an
mechanical engineering, as well as courses in
engineering science and interdisciplinary engineering

programs in each of the traditional disciplines.
Interdisciplinary studies are encouraged in a number
areas, such as computer systems, robotics, biomedic
topics, environmental issues, and materials.

The faculty are committed teachers. Many carry out

advanced research for government agencies and
industry through the C.V. Starr Research Foundation
The Cooper Union. With an annual budget of more th
$1 million, The Foundation employs undergraduate a
graduate students in a wide array of research projec
that have been funded by such agencies as NASA, t
New York City Department of Environmental Protect
Consolidated Edison and the federal departments of
commerce and energy. This research has led to an
alternative technology to recover energy from sewag
sludge; a pollution-control computer model to elimina
odors in urban harbors; a dolphin-shaped robot to
inspect the inside of pipelines for structural defects; a
computer model to predict the performance of
gasification plants that synthesize fuels from coal; a
nonsmudging newsprint ink and a better adhering
asphalt for road repair.
