These guidelines cover DEL full-time reser!h studentships:
1" ELIGI#ILIT$ CRITERIA
To be eligible for consideration for a DEL studentship, a candidate must satisfy ALL the
eligibility criteria based on nationality, residency, citizenship and academic qualifications. The
main criteria are:
A!%e&'! Re()'re&ents
a) The required minimum academic qualification for a DEL studentship is a :! "onours
degree or a qualification considered equivalent by the #niversity e.g. a . "onours
degree plus a $aster%s Degree at &'( or above. )ormally the qualifications must be
obtained by the start of the studentship, usually !* +ugust. ,andidates must provide
official, final results of all qualifications to be used to meet the academic
requirements, before the start of the studentship.
b) ,andidates -ho already hold a doctoral degree or -ho have been registered on a
programme of research leading to the a-ard of a doctoral degree on a full.time basis
for more than one year or part.time equivalent, funded from any source, including
self.financing students are not eligible for a studentship.

To qualify for the full DEL /i.e. payment of fees and maintenance) applicants must have been
resident in the #nited 0ingdom or 1slands /includes 1sle of $an and ,hannel islands), or
else-here in the European #nion /for fees only studentships), throughout the period of 2
years immediately preceding the start of the studentship /or -ould have been so resident had
you, your spouse or either parent not been employed temporarily outside the #0).
3or )on.E# nationals 4 the main purpose of your residence in the #0 must )5T
have been to receive full time education during any part of that 2 year period.
3or E# nationals 4 -here the main purpose for your residence in the #0 -as to
receive full time education you must have been ordinarily resident in the European
Economic +rea /EE+) and 6 or 7-itzerland immediately before that 2 year period.
E# nationals may qualify for a 83ees only9 studentship if you are in the #0 as a self.
sufficient person or as a student, or you are the family member of such a person. :ou
must have been ordinarily resident in the EE+ and 6 or 7-itzerland for 2 years before
the first day of the first academic year of the course. The main purpose for your
residence in the EE+ and 6 or 7-itzerland must not have been to receive full time
education during any part of that 2 year period.

C't'*ensh'+ Re()'re&ents
a) :ou must be a ;ritish ,itizen, E# national or relevant family member of an E# national.
:ou may be eligible for support if you are the child of either a 7-iss national or Tur<ish
-or<er. 3or )on.E# nationals 4 $,) &)st -e .sett/e%0 'n the U1 -y the !/,s'n2 %te
3,r the 4r%. 87ettled9 means being both ordinarily resident in the #0 and -ithout any
immigration restriction on the length of your stay in the #0. To be 8settled9 you must
either have the =ight of +bode or 1ndefinite Leave to Enter or =emain in the #0, or be a
national of the =epublic of 1reland, or have the right of permanent residence in the #0
under E, La-.

2" 5ALUE O6 DEL RESEARCH STUDENTSHIPS
?enerally, these studentships last for three years. + 3ull a-ard includes a
maintenance allo-ance and the payment of fees. + 3ees 5nly a-ard covers only
tuition fees. ); a DEL ,+7T studentship may include the payment of tuition fees, a
maintenance allo-ance and may also include an incentive from the collaborating body.
The length of the a-ard may be reduced due to previous postgraduate research study,
e.g. if a successful applicant has already completed one year /or the equivalent) of
postgraduate research study, the studentship -ill last for only t-o years.

The maintenance allo-ance for '!@.!* is still to be confirmed /'!2.!@ rate -as
A!2,B& per annum). This is paid in quarterly instalments.
