Cardiovascular-Pulmonary Relationship

Task:
To individually design and carry out a lab experiment that compares the responses of the
cardiovascular and pulmonary systems to various levels of exercise.
Part One: Pre-lab (Groups)
Prior to designing your own lab, you will have a discussion and brainstorming session in small
groups to try to review some key concepts that you have already learned and come up with some
possible variables for your experiment.
Here are some questions for your group to consider/discuss:
- We know that our heart starts beating faster when we exercise, but does it keep getting faster if
we keep exercising? Explain your answer.
- We know that as we exercise our breathing rate starts to increase, but do we just keep breathing
faster and faster? Explain your answer.
- How do different types of exercise effect our heart rate and breathing rate?
List of possible variables that could be changed, observed/measured or kept the same:
Part Two: Planning (Individual)
Once your group has brainstormed as many variables as you can (that are relevant and realistic),
it!s time for you to start planning. Where do you start?
Decide what you will change, what you will measure and what you will keep the same
Develop a good question to investigate
Record your hypothesis (the answer to your question)
Design your experiment (Materials, Procedure, Observations (how you will record your
data),etc.)
By the time that you have completed Part Two, the rst part of your lab report should be completed
(everything up to the data collection).
Part Three: Data Collection (Pairs)
You will not be able to do Part Three until you have shown that you have completed Parts One
and Two. You will be given one class period to complete your data collection with your partner.
Any data not collected during the assigned class is your responsibility to nish. (Make sure that
you mark down in your observation notes if this happens!)
Part Four: Finishing the Lab Report
You will have class time to work on completing your lab report. Make sure that you follow the Lab
Report Checklist that we have been using all year long. You will need to turn in your lab report in
two ways:
1. On Managebac (as PDF with correct le name)
2. Printed copy (double-sided)
The sooner you get your rst draft done, the more time you have to go back and edit your work to
give your best nal product!!

1-2
Consistent with the complexity of the work covered:
You attempted to state a focused problem or research
question.
The method suggested is incomplete.
You attempted to make comments on the method.
You collected some data and attempted to record it in a
suitable format.
You organized and presented data using simple numerical or
visual forms.
You attempted to identify a trend, pattern or relationship in
the data.
You attempted to draw a conclusion but this is not consistent
with the interpretation of the data.
You required some guidance to work safely and some
assistance when using material and equipment.
You required some guidance to work responsibly with regards
to the living and non-living environment.
When working as part of a group, you needed frequent
reminders to cooperate with others.
3-4
Consistent with the complexity of the work covered:
You stated a focused problem or research question and made a
hypothesis but did not explain it using scientifc reasoning.
You selected appropriate materials and equipment and wrote a
mostly complete method, mentioning some of the variables
involved and how to manipulate them.
You made comments on the method.
You suggested some improvements to the method.
You collected sufcient relevant data and recorded it in a
suitable format.
You organized, transformed and presented data in numerical
and/or visual forms, with some errors or omissions.
You stated a trend, pattern or relationship shown in the data.
You drew a conclusion consistent with the interpretation of
the data.
You required little guidance to work safely and little
assistance when using material and equipment.
You worked responsibly with regards to the living and non-
living environment.
When working as part of a group, you cooperated with others
on most occasions.
5-6
Consistent with the complexity of the work covered:
You stated a clear focused problem or research question,
formulated a testable hypothesis (If I do this, then this will
happen because ), and explained the hypothesis using
scientifc reasoning.
You selected appropriate materials and equipment and wrote a
clear, logical method, mentioning all of the relevant variables
involved and how to control and manipulate them, and
describing how the data will be collected.
You made comments on the method, and the accuracy and
precision of the data.
You made comments on the how the hypothesis is supported
or not by the data/outcome of the investigation.
You suggested improvements to the method when relevant.
You collected sufcient relevant data and recorded it in a
suitable format.
You organized, transformed and presented data in numerical
and/or visual forms logically and correctly.
You described a trend, pattern or relationship in the data and
uses the data to convey understanding / interpretation.
You drew a clear conclusion consistent with the interpretation
of the data and explained it using scientifc reasoning.
You required no guidance to work safely and used material and
equipment competently.
You worked responsibly with regards to the living and non-
living environment.
When working as part of a group, you cooperated with others.
