e,pected. In such cases the 7unda should be placed
in trines/seventh to the <ord of <agna. !his is also
seen to apply when the lagna lord is stronger than
the lagna.

5.3.5 # Using "edical .almistry
Palmistry is a branch of Astrology, which was up
until now loo8ed upon as 8nowledge related to
fortune telling handed down by our ancestors from
generation to generation. 0owever, from the
medical point of view, now, Palmistry has emerged
as a science in its own right that has helped doctors
and patients ali8e in diagnosing diOcult diseases.
i# The &ene*ts of "edical .almistry are as
follows:
-edical Palmistry not only helps diagnosing
diseases but also helps one to 8now about the
patientPs temperament, his/her constitution, and
the subconscious mind. Besides, some factors such
as love, libido, and the emotions that are beyond
the pale of empirical sciences, can easily be
recogni$ed by the 8nowledge of Palmistry.
a* It provides an early warning for forthcoming
diseases, and one can prevent them early.
b* It provides information about hidden diseases
which remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed by
doctors.
c) It helps in the prognosis of diseases where
doctors are unsure about it.
d) Psychological ailments can be easily
recogni$ed by the study of the palm.
e* Palmistry has a maCor role in prevention of
diseases. =ith its help and 8nowledge, a
doctor can easily recogni$e the wea8ness of
the system and advise the patient all relevant
nutritional changes to prevent the
disease from becoming severe.
f* ;erious illnesses, accident and hospitali$ation
can be avoided by guiding the person properly in
the nascent stage.

Problems in any particular system in the human body
are li8ely to be caused by the planet inimical to the
ruler of that system. !he eJect of ;aturn, for
instance, is virtually non/e,istent at birth and
progressively goes on increasing with age. As a result
any bone inCury in early years tends to heal

is the naisargi8a 8ara8a for growth. 9ancer is

is indicative of Aupiter having become maleHc and
having withdrawn its benign protection.
According to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of
medicine, there are three basic humours that need to
be in balance for the maintenance of health. Any
imbalance in these three humours leads to bodily
illness. !he technical terms for the three are aata,
Pitta and 7apha. !he closest but inade&uate
translation would be wind, bile and phlegm
respectively. Accordingly the aata element produces
LwindyG complaints, neurological disorders, Coint pains
etc. !he Pitta is concerned with LheatG,
in@ammations, fever, liver and gall bladder problems
etc. !he 7apha element concerns with most of
respiratory ailments, colds, asthma etc.
Any mental level disease caused due to any one of
the three humors can be cured with relative ease. On
the other hand such a mental disease resulting out of
a combination of two or more of the three humors
cannot be addressed that easily and is 8nown as
sannipatta.

5.3.B## 9ongivity of Native
i) !he death of the native can be studied

iii) Balarishtha refers to infantile death ') to 1%

can cause death
Nogarishtha refers to teenage death around 1% to %)

Alpa Ayus indicates premature death within (1

V-adhya Ayus refers to middle life where the
longevity is from (1 to >% years. Another

Prescription of 3emstone is one of the most
important aspects of remedies in Ayotish ;hastra. !he
use of 3emstone is also endorsed by shastras such
as 3aruda Purana which gives elaborate description
of the nature of the gemstones and their use. #ven
though gemstone use is one of the most popular
source of remedies for all ills of the material world,
may it be health, wealth or fortune, it is fraught with
many misconceptions and erroneous notions of their
selection and prescription.
+ # -emstone of Gogakarta
;ince the gemstones enhance the in@uence of the
planet in the life of the person, the gemstones for the
planets giving yogas should always be chosen. !o
8now the yoga givers or the yoga/8ara8as in a
horoscope,
i* <agna lord is the Hrst and foremost yoga 8ara8a in
a horoscope, since is the owner of both 7endra
'Duadrant* and 7ona '!rine*. 0e is protector of the
<agna, which represent health, vitality and the
controller of the whole horoscope. !he placement of
the <agna lord is e,tremely important for the overall
strength of the horoscope and its gemstone can help
a person overcoming all diOculties in life.
ii* !he lords of two trines Hfth and ninth are e&ually
important. !hey are the two important houses which
control the Hnancial wellbeing of a person. If they are
badly placed in the horoscope, then the person might
suJer Hnancially in life. !hus their strength is
e,tremely important in addition to the lords of
second and eleventh, who signify =ealth and
Income.
#ach planet can give results on the following basis.
1. <ordship
%. Placement
(. "atural 7ara8atva ';igniHcations*
6. Noga '#,change, 9onCunction, Aspects*
0ence it must be remembered that a good planet
'lords of <agna, :th and 4th* / Noga/ 8ara8a if placed
in a dusthana '1th / 8th/ 1%th*, they can also give
maleHc results in addition to their inherent beneHc
nature to do good. ;imilarly if the yoga8ara8as are
involved in other bad yogas, they can give bad
results, while their gemstones are worn. =henever
there is a conCunction or e,change of two planets,
their inherent and functional nature is greatly
modiHed. =hen a beneHc planet comes into
association with a maleHc planet, then the beneHc
nature of the planet is corrupted and it starts giving
maleHc results, however the maleHc planet gains out
of the company and gives good results. ;uch subtle
eJects should always be 8ept into consideration,
while suggesting a gemstone for Ayotish remedial
purposes.
#,ception to this is that, if ;aturn becomes the Noga/
8ara8a and is placed in a dusthana, then its ability to
do good increases. It is advisable to wear "eelam,
;aturnGs stone for such cases.
ii# -emstone of Feak .lanet
If a yoga/8ara8a 'or any good planet in the
horoscope, lords of any houses other than 1th/ 8th or
1%th* is debilitated, they must be strengthened. One
of the ways is to wear the stone of the debilitated
planet. 0owever, the more eJective way is to Hnd
the planet who is causing neecha/bhanga to the
debilitated planet. If the neecha/bhanga is happening
with respect to the -oon, then -antra would be a
good remedy, however, if it happens with respect to
the <agna, then wearing the gemstone of the planet
causing the neecha/bhanga would ma8e the
debilitated planet come out of the state of
debilitation.
=hen there is no cancellation of debility of other
wea8nesses then the gemstones for the supporters
of the debilitated planet can be prescribed for
causing cancellation of debility or for enhancing the
life/forces that are being destroyed due to the
debility. 2or e,ample, the -oon is debilitated in
;corpio '8th house of natural $odiac* and is said to
be -A+A"A 7A+A7A if placed in the 8th house from
<agna. =ea8ness of such -oon, in any chart is not
good for longevity. 0ence a blue sapphire is used for
enhancing the life/force.
It must be noted that debilitation of some planets are
desirable in a horoscope. !hey are the lords of the
?usthanas '1th/ 8th/ 1%th*. If the lords of the
?usthanas are placed in other ?usthanas in
debilitation, then it confers ipareeta raCa yoga,
whereby the native gains due to the loss of natural
and functional signiHcations of the planet causing the
yoga. 2or e,ample, if 8th lord -oon is involved in
ipareeta +aCa yoga, by its debilitation in the 1%th
house, the native might enCoy rise in life, but the
-other 'natural signiHcation of -oon* and the
marriage '8th house is the longevity of marriage*
might suJer simultaneously. !o enCoy the fruits of
ipareeta +aCa yoga, the native must not strengthen
such debilitated planets that confer the yoga.
iii# Vi)reeta Ratna ! 0))osite -emstone#
ipareeta means opposite or gemstones used for
wea8ening the eJects of some planets in certain
houses. If any house is occupied by an enemy of its
7ara8a, then the signiHcations of the house suJer.
7eeping this principle in view, the Hrst house to be
chec8ed in any chart is the ninth house of fortune
and ?harma with Aupiter Q ;un as the signiHcator.
+ahu and ;aturn are the enemies of these
signiHcator and if they are placed in the ninth house,
they shall damage fortune and ?harma. !he remedy
is to strengthen the concerned 7ara8a by wearing its
gemstone in the ring Hnger. ;u8a "adi states that if
+ahu is in the ninth house, then the native has good
fortune after wearing a !opa$. !he same principle of
ipareeta +atna 'Opposite 3emstone* has been used
here. +ahu is the enemy of Aupiter and since it is
placed in the ninth house, the use of a !opa$
'gemstone of Aupiter* removes the misfortune caused
by +ahu. ;imilarly, if ;aturn is in the ninth house,
then the person may suJer from poverty/ failure in
the homeland after (1 years. !o remove this evil, a
ruby, the gemstone of the ;un ';aturnGs enemy* is
worn.
iv# -emstone Vs 2asha
0ands in which the gemstones are worn to be chosen
on the basis of certain criteria. !he right hand is
ruled Aupiter and the left hand by enus indicating
increase 'right hand* or decrease 'left hand* of life
force.
!hus, if gemstones have to be prescribed to decrease
the evil eJects of a maleHc planet, its gemstone
should be used in the left hand. ;uch use should be
temporary covering the dasa/bhu8ti of the planet.
=hen the planet is a maleHc for the horoscope, the
maleHcence of the planet can be reduced by wearing
a counter gemstone temporarily during the ?asa/
bhu8ti of the planet. If instead a gem is to be worn
for the main ?asa planet itself, then it should be
worn in the left hand. 2or e,ample, if +ahu is maleHc
then during its period a Nellow ;apphire/!opa$/9itrine
can be worn in the right hand ring Hnger or
0essonite/Brown !ourmaline etc can be worn in the
left hand middle Hnger.
v# Elawed -emstone
A genuine gemstone of good &uality should never be
used with an imperfect or @awed gem or with one
that is astrologically incompatible with it. ;uta
3oswami '3aruda Purana* advises Enot to wear a
gem that is of inferior &uality or incompatible even if
it is set together with the divine 7austhuba -ani of
ishnu.
Aust as the best of saints lose their merits by bad
company, similarly, an imperfect/inferior or
incompatible gemstone can ruin the beneHcence of
other good gems.
vi# -emstone and 9agna 9ord
2or determining compatibility of gemstones most
astrologers go by the "aisargi8a ;ambandha 'natural
relationship* of other planets with the stone of the
principal/ruling planet. !he +uling Planet is the
strongest one in trines to the <agna or in the seventh
house '1,:,> Q 4 houses*, and if none are there, then
the <agna lord is chosen. !hus if the ruling planet is
the -oon, then all planets are compatible with it, but
if it is the ;un, then only Aupiter, -ars Q -oon are
compatible and their stones can be chosen.
;ince the <agna is the controller of the 0oroscope,
the impact of the 3emstone ultimately falls on the
<agna 'more so, since <agna is the controller of the
physical body, where the gemstone is worn*. !he
planets, whose gemstone is worn, should be a friend
to the <agna lord as per the naisargi8a sambandha. If
any planet is inimical to the lord of <agna, the use of
its gemstone can damage / endanger the concerned
people related to the house owned by the planet. 2or
e,ample if the lord of the Hfth house is inimical to the
<agna lord, then the use of a gemstone of the Hfth
lord can endanger the life children. 0ence utmost
caution should be used in prescribing gemstones.
vii# Naisargika 4am&andha of .lanets
;ome astrologers also use !at8ali8a ;ambandha
'9urrent relationship* between planets in a chart as
this also ta8es the individual horoscope into focus.
0ere, the planets that are Param -itra, -itra or ;ama
to the ruling planet are chosen for supportive
gemstones.
Among all the methods of Cudging the suitability of a
3emstone namely, the naisargi8a sambandha,
tat8ali8a sambandha and other sambandha, the best
and most beneHcial gemstones are those of the
planets involved in a beneHcial Noga. If the tenth and
ninth lord are involved in a ?harma/7armadhipati
Noga, then their stones should be used together to
augment the eJects of the Noga. 3emstones of
planets involved in ?uryoga and other maleHc
combinations or where beneHts accrue if the planets
are wea8 and aSicted li8e the ipareeta +aCyoga,
should never be used.
i# -emstones of "utually +nmmical .lanets.
3emstones of mutually inimical planets should never
be used simultaneously as they shall prove to be
very adverse. -any astrologers give gemstones of
mutually inimical planets such as 0essonite '+ahu*
with +uby ';un* or Nellow ;apphire 'Aupiter* or +ed
9oral '-ars*. ;uch combinations can be e,tremely
dangerous for the native. !he natural Hght between
the owners of the gemstones can be visible in the life
of native, where we can witnessM the native is caught
between many undesirable circumstances without
his fault. !he table shown below shows the natural
relationships between the planets.
%# Eingers and -emstone
!he inde, Hnger is called !arCani and is considered
very inauspicious. In mantra recitation the beads
should never touch this Hnger, even while turning the
rosary 'when we Hnish one circle of 1)8 beads*. It
rules the EAham8araF and is the Hnger of EfallF or
e,pression of anger. !he 3yana -udra has all Hngers
e,cept this inde, Hnger stretched out with the inde,
Hnger 'of anger* being in touch with and controlled
by the A8asha !attva of the !humb. "ormally for
people who are spiritual / worship their 3uru,
gemstones should not be used in this Hnger. ;ome
astrologers prescribe +uby / Nellow ;apphire for
Power / =ealth respectively, for use in the inde,
Hnger. 0owever these gemstones have been found to
give better results of stable power and gradual stable
growth in Hnance in the ring Hnger.
Tatwa in .almistry
!he gemstone of a planet placed in a house should
be worn according to the &uadrant '7endra house* is
whose trines it is placed. !hus a planet in the ninth
house in@uences the ?harma !ri8ona and its
gemstone should be worn in the ring Hnger.
3emstones of planets in -o8sha !ri8ona '6, 8, 1%*
should not be prescribed as then they would be worn
in the !arCani 'Inde, Hnger*. Instead mantra of these
planets should be advised.
2urther gemstone cannot be worn in the Hnger of
inimical elements. 2or e,ample, if a +ed 9oral is to
be worn for -ars placed in the seventh house, this
cannot be prescribed for the little Hnger due to -ars
ruling Agni !attva 'Hre element*, which is opposed to
the ayu !attva 'Air element*. !hus a 9oral can only
be worn in the ring Hnger 'Agni !attva / 2ire* or
middle Hnger 'Prithvi !attva / #arth*. Aust as the
thumb is diJerent from the other four Hngers and in
conCunction with them does all wor8, the A8asha
!attva '#ther elementBsymboli$ed by the !humb*
permeates all signs of the other elements and is the
driving force / ?hi ;ha8ti.
k# -emstone and Arudha 9agna
;ince the gemstones are ta8en for fulHlling the
material pursuits in the life than anything else, the
arudha lagna plays a very vital role in selection of
the gemstones. Arudha <agna shows the image in
this world or in other words, the perception of the
world related to the native. !his is the material
manifestation of the e,istantial reality of a person.
-aharishi parashara says that planets in the twelfth
of Arudha <agna 'A<* can show the sources of
e,penditure, while that in the 11th from the A< show
the sources of Income. #ven though the promise of
the wealth can be seen from diJerent dhana yogas in
the horoscope and the strength of the %nd, 11th and
the trines, the sources and the &uantum of the gains
or losses can be seen from the Arudha.
!hus, it is very important to consider the placement
of Planets with respect to the Arudha <agna for Hnal
selection of an 3emstone. !he following guidelines
can help in such CudgementK
1. If a planet is placed in or aspecting the 1%th from
the Arudha <agna, the gemstone for such planet can
increase the e,penditure of the native. -aleHcs are
well placed here as it confer raCayoga while placed
here in addition to the e,penses shown. 0owever one
must remember that planets placed here shows the
persons who would secretly oppose the native in
various activities. ;o the gemstones of such planets
to be chosen after careful consideration of all factors
involved.
%. !he gemstone of a planet placed in or aspecting
the 11th from Arudha <agna shall give income from
the sources indicated by the planet. !he sources can
be 8nown by Cudging both the functional as well as
natural signiHcations of the concerned planet.
(. !he %nd and >th house from the Arudha <agna are
the houses of sustainance of the Image. !hey should
be occupied by beneHcs or e,alted planets. If they
are occupied by maleHcs, the gemstones of such
planets can cause fall of image and troubles in career
and various other troubles. In addition the planets in
the >th from Arudha lagna shows the persons who
would openly oppose the person in various activities,
and this is more true with respect to the -aleHcs.
!hus if beneHcs are placed in the >th from the
Arudha <agna, their gemstones can be given,
provided the native can withstand the opposition
shown by the concerned planet.
6. !he planets in the Arudha <agna shows how the
world perceives the native. !he presence of -oon or
Aupiter in the Arudha <agna gives long lasting fame.
!hey should otherwise be placed with beneHcs or
e,alted planets and gemstones of such -oon, Aupiter,
beneHcs or e,alted planets can be beneHcial to the
native, otherwise it can be harmful.
;imilarly the lord of the Arudha <agna should ideally
be well placed in either e,altation, mulatri8ona, own
house or friends house. If gemstone of such planets
is worn, it would beneHt the native by uplifting his
image. If such planet is in fall or unfavourably placed,
then the gemstone of the planet, countering the evil
has to be worn 'please refer to relevant section for
more information on this*
:. -aleHcs in the (rd or 1th gives material success
whereas beneHcs in these places ma8es the person
spiritual, unless they are debilitated. !hus wearing
the gemstones of the maleHcs placed in (rd or 1th
can help in fulHlment of obCectives and gaining over
all odds. 0owever, maleHcs in the (rd from A< can be
detrimental to the health and longevity, thus while
prescribing the gemstones, one need to consider this
factor as well.
1. !he eighth house is also very crucial in a way that
it controls the longevity of the person. -aleHcs
placed over there can harm the health of the person
and also the image. ;tones of such maleHcs placed
there should never be worn.
>. All planets either be beneHcs or maleHcs give good
results and Hnancial gains while placed in the 4th
house from the arudha <agna. 5nless any other
adverse yogas e,ist, gemstone of such planet would
be beneHcial to the native.
8. 1)th house shows the impact of a planet in the
nativePs career. BeneHcs are best suited here and
maleHcs are prohibited. 2or e,ample, if ;aturn is
placed in such 1)th, then the career becomes a bed
of thorne for the native.
