INTRODUCTION
Electrical appliance control using mobile phone
It is a device which uses mobile phone to turn on-off any device connected at the load from any
remote location. This can be achieved by dialing the number of the cell phone which is
connected to the main circuit which is automatically picked up by using auto pick up mode and
then key is pressed from DTMF keypad of the cell phone to control the corresponding device.
The device which is to be controlled is connected with the power supply with the help of relay
of specific rating. The device can also be controlled by pressing the key from DTMF keypad of
the cell phone which is dedicated to the kit.
DUAL TONE MULTI -FREQUENCY SIGNALING (DTMF)
This project is based on dual tone multi-frequency signaling which is decoded by the use of
DTMF decoder. Dual-tone multi-frequency signaling is used for telecommunication signaling
over analog telephone lines in the voice-frequency band between telephone handsets and
other communications devices and the switching center. The version of DTMF that is used in
push-button telephones for tone dialing is known as Touch-Tone.

Fig 1 DTMF keypad layout

2

A DTMF decoder detects the DTMF tones and generates the binary sequence corresponding to
key pressed in a DTMF keypad. DTMF keypads are used in almost all landline and mobile
handsets.
The DTMF keypad is laid out in a 44 matrix in which each row represents a low frequency and
each column represents a high frequency. Pressing a single key sends a sinusoidal tone for each
of the two frequencies. For example, the key 1 produces a superimposition of tones of 697 and
1209 hertz (Hz). Initial pushbutton designs employed levers, so that each button activated two
contacts. The tones are decoded by the switching center to determine the keys pressed by the
user.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
The project uses M-8870 DTMF decoder IC which decodes tone generated by the
keypad of cell phone.
When we press keys in our cell Phone when call is in progress, the other person will
hear some tones with respect to keys pressed. These tones are based on the DTMF
technology.
DTMF signal can be tapped directly from the microphone pin of cell phone device.
Microphone wire has 4 wires. Among these wires we need only 2 wires Ground and
Right.
Fig 4 Microphone wire
Take the right wire and connect it as input to the decoder circuit. Ground of jack should
be connected to common ground of our circuit.
The signals from the microphone wire are processed by the DTMF decoder IC which
generates the equivalent binary sequence as a parallel output as Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4.

Table 1 showing DTMF low and high frequency tones and decoded output
6

The output Q1,Q2,Q3,Q4 are connected to LED and to the relay. The load is connected
through the relay and power is supplied from the separate power source
These LED and load(fan) can be turned on or off either by using the DTMF keypad of the
mobile phone which is connected directly to the circuit or by using the other mobile
phone from any distant location.
When we need to operate the device from the distant location a call is made to the
phone which is connected to the kit and then the phone is automatically picked by auto
pick up mode and when the call is in progress the keys are pressed from the DTMF
keypad according to which different devices get either turned on or off depending on
the binary sequence which is generated by the DTMF decoder by decoding the tone
which is transmitted from the DTMF keypad of the mobile phone.

APPLICATION

This system can be used in industrial applications.
This system can be employed in houses ,where people often forget to switch off
electrical appliances
This system can be used to control ACs to set the room temperature
when we are outside
We can extend this circuit to control many electrical devices with some modifications
using 4 x16 decoder IC.

ADVANTAGES
Quick response is achieved.
Construction is easy.
Easy to maintain and repair.
Comparatively the operation cost is less.
Design is efficient and low cost.
Power consumption is low.
Controlling electrical devices wirelessly
Saves electricity (when we forget to switch off and go out).
We can control appliances from any place round the globe.
No coding is required.

DISADVANTAGES
This system is not capable of displaying the feed back status of
the devices being operated.
This system needs a cell phone to be placed in circuit.
Any one who knows the phone number and code can control our electrical appliances
Number of electrical appliances that can be controlled by this circuit is limited
