1. What did you like about the film and why? I like the story of Dr. Felix Zandman and how his hardships and triumphs help him to become a better person and successful in life.
2. Describe how the documentary was organized and presented. And was it effective? The documentary film alternates between the past and the present. The present shows Dr. Zandman visiting his old house in Poland and the contributions he had made in electronics and his company, Vishay, and the past shows how he struggled and survived during World War 2. This technique by the director is very effective in making me see the relationship of how his past has influenced him; push him to become successful.
3. Provide three critical and substantial questions to address the issues and values shown in the film. What are the implications of Grandma Temas kindness to their innkeeper? When the innkeeper was about to give birth, she asked help from Grandma Tema, her employer. Without thinking twice, she helped pay for the innkeeper hospital expense and she even let her live in their summer home in the forest. This act of kindness would later be repaid by the innkeeper by helping Grandma Temas grandson Felix and his other relatives survive the Holocaust. If it wasnt for Grandma Temas act of kindness, there wont be a Dr. Felix Zandman neither will there be much technological advancements available today.
Why was Dr. Felix Zandman eager to acquire the German company, Telefunken? Telefunken, the electronics company ran by the German Nazis, was the jewel of the Third Reich providing the government with technological achievements. However, after the war, it went for sale and when Dr. Felix Zandman heard of this, he quickly thought of acquiring it. He knows that Telefunken was definitely Nazi and it was involved in everything the German Army did. If he bought it, it would be a victory for him, a Jew whom they wanted to kill, could direct such a company.
Why did Dr. Felix Zandman help the Israeli Army improve their tank and after that, he didnt ask for anything in return? Dr. Felix Zandman was asked to help in improving the tanks of the Israeli Army because the tank was very inaccurate because of the bending of the cannon under too much heat that when it shoots a target 1000m away, the projectile would deviate 3 feet away from the target. Dr. Felix was able to fin a solution and the tank became the best tank in the world. He did this and he did not ask for a fee, he gave this technology to the army for free. He loves his country and his fellow Jew so much. Because for him, to help his country advance is the most important thing that he could have done in his life.
4. How do you think this documentary can be applied to our (Philippine) society (issues, values, events)? He put to heart what his grandma told him, which is It is better to give than to receive and what you give remains with you your whole life, even after you die. which underlines his values and outlook in life. We Filipinos, who are known to be hospitable and friendly people, can apply these values in our daily lives.
