_______________General Desc ription
The M A X606/M A X607 are the sm allest C M O S, step-up
D C -D C converters available for flash m em ory and PC
(PC M C IA ) cards. They sw itch at up to 1M H z, perm itting
the entire circuit to fit in 0.25in
2
, yet rem ain und er
1.35m m high to fit Type 1, 2, and 3 card standards.
These devices operate from a 3V to 5.5V input and pro-
vide a 4% -accurate output that is preset to 5V or 12V,
or adjustable from VIN to 12.5V. Their guaranteed out-
put current is 60m A at 12V.
The M A X606 sw itches at up to 1M H z and fits Type 1
(thinnest standard) flash m em ory and PC M C IA cards. It
uses a thin, 1.19m m high, 5H inductor and sm all,
0.68F outp ut cap acitors. The entire circuit fits in
0.25in
2
and is less than 1.35m m high.
The M A X607 sw itches at up to 500kH z, fitting Type 2
and 3 card s, as w ell as hand -held d evices w here
height requirem ents are not as critical. It uses less
board area than the M A X606, fitting in 0.16in
2
, but
requires 2.5m m of height. It also has a low er no-load
supply current than the M A X606.
B oth devices use a unique, current-lim ited pulse-fre-
quency-m odulation (PFM ) control schem e that optim izes
efficiency over all input and output voltages. O ther fea-
tures include 1A logic-controlled shutdow n and user-
controlled soft-start to m inim ize inrush currents.
The M A X606/M A X607 com e in 8-pin M A X and SO
packages. The M A X package uses half the board
area of a standard 8-pin SO and has a m axim um height
of just 1.11m m .

_______________Detailed Desc ription
The rem ainder of this docum ent contains the detailed
inform ation youll need to design a circuit that differs
from the tw o Standard A pplication C ircuits. If you are
using one of the predesigned circuits, the follow ing
sections are purely inform ational.
The M A X606/M A X607 C M O S, step-up D C -D C convert-
ers em ploy a current-lim ited pulse-frequency m odula-
tion (PFM ) control schem e. This PFM control schem e
regulates a boost topology to convert input voltages
betw een 3V and 5.5V into either a pin-program m able
5V/12V output, or an adjustable output betw een VIN
and 12.5V. It optim izes perform ance over all input and
output voltages, and guarantees output accuracy to
4% .
The ultra-high sw itching frequency (typically 1M H z for
the M A X606 and 0.5M H z for the M A X607) perm its the
use of extrem ely sm all external com ponents, m aking
these converters ideal for use in Types 1, 2, and 3 flash
m em ory and PC M C IA applications.
Pulse-Frequenc y-Modulation
Control Sc heme
The M A X606/M A X607 em ploy a proprietary, current-
lim ited PFM control schem e that com bines the ultra-low
supply current of traditional pulse-skipping PFM con-
verters w ith the high full-load efficiency of current-m ode
pulse-w idth-m odulation (PW M ) converters. This particu-
lar control schem e is sim ilar to the one used in previous
current-lim ited P FM d evices, w hich g overned the
sw itching current via m axim um on-tim e, m inim um off-
tim e, and current lim it, except it varies the on and off
tim es according to the input and output voltages. This
im p ortant feature enab les the M A X 606/M A X 607 to
achieve ultra-high sw itching frequencies w hile m ain-
taining high output accuracy, low output ripple, and
hig h efficiency over a w id e rang e of load s and
input/output voltages.
Figure 3 show s the functional diagram of the M A X606/
M A X607. The internal pow er M O SFET is turned on w hen
the error com parator senses that the output is out of reg-
ulation. The pow er sw itch stays on until either the tim ing
circuit turns it off at the end of the on-tim e, or the sw itch
current reaches the current lim it. O nce off, the sw itch
rem ains off during the off-tim e. Subsequently, if the out-
put is still out of regulation, another sw itching cycle is ini-
tiated. O therw ise, the sw itch rem ains turned off as long
as the output is in regulation.

The on/off tim es are determ ined by the input and output
voltages:
tO N = K / VIN
tO FF = 0.5 x K / (VO U T + VD IO D E - VIN )
K is typically 3s-V for the M A X606 and 6s-V for the
M A X 607. This factor is chosen to set the op tim um
sw itching frequency and the one-cycle current lim it,
w hich determ ines the no-load output ripple at low out-
put-to-input voltage differentials. The factor of 0.5 in the
off-tim e equation is the typical sw itch off-tim e ratio. This
ratio guarantees high efficiency under a heavy load by
allow ing the inductor to operate in continuous-conduc-
tion m ode. For exam ple, a sw itch off-tim e ratio of 1
w ould cause the device to operate on the edge of dis-
continuous-conduction m ode.
To determ ine the actual sw itch off-tim e ratio for a par-
ticular device, m easure tO N , tO FF, VIN , and VO U T, and
then solve for the ratio by substituting these values into
the off-tim e equation.
U nlike PW M converters, the M A X606/M A X607 generate
variab le-freq uency sw itching noise. H ow ever, the
am plitude of this noise does not exceed the product of
the sw itch current lim it and the output capacitor equiva-
lent series resistance (ESR ). Traditional clocked-PFM or
pulse-skipping converters cannot m ake this claim .
Output Voltage Selec tion
The M A X606/M A X607 output voltage is pin-program -
m able to 5V and 12V, and also adjustable to voltages
betw een VIN and 12.5V. C onnect FB to IN for a 5V out-
put, to G N D for a 12V output, or to a resistive divider
betw een the output and G N D for an adjustable output.
A lw ays connect O U T to the output.

output. H ow ever, w hen the voltage at FB is betw een
0.1V above ground and 0.1V below VIN , the device is in
the ad justab le outp ut m od e. In this m od e, the
M A X606/M A X607 output voltage is set by tw o external
resistors, R 1 and R 2 (Figure 4), w hich form a voltage
divider betw een the output and FB . U se the follow ing
equation to determ ine the output voltage:
VO U T = VR EF (R 1 / R 2 + 1)
w here VR EF = 2V. To sim plify the resistor selection:
R 1 = R 2 [(VO U T / VR EF) - 1]
Since the input current at FB is 200nA m axim um , large
values (up to 100k) can be used for R 2 w ith no signifi-
cant loss of accuracy. For 1% error, the current through
R 2 should be at least 100 tim es the FB input bias current.
Soft-Start
C onnecting a cap acitor to the S oft-S tart (S S ) p in
ensures a gradually increasing current lim it during
pow er-up or w hen exiting shutdow n, thereby reducing
initial inrush currents. This feature can be useful, for
exam ple, w hen an old batterys increased series resis-
tance lim its initial inrush currents. U sing the soft-start
feature in a situation like this m inim izes the risk of over-
loading the incom ing supply.
Soft-start tim ing is controlled by the value of the SS
capacitor. O n pow er-up, the SS capacitor is charged by
the 2V reference through an internal, 45k pull-up resis-
tor. A s the voltage on the SS pin increases, the voltage
at the SS clam p output also increases, w hich in turn
raises the current-lim it threshold. The Start-U p D elay vs.
S S C ap acitor g rap h in the Typ ical O p erating
C haracteristics show s typical tim ing characteristics for
selected capacitor values and circuit conditions. The
soft-start capacitor is discharged each tim e the M A X606
or M A X607 is put into shutdow n, including during under-
voltage lockout and w hen pow ering dow n at IN .
If the circuit is required to start up w ith no load, as in
flash m em ory program m ing supplies, soft-start is not
required. O m itting the soft-start capacitor perm its a
m inim um output voltage rise tim e from the shutdow n
state, im proving flash m em ory access tim e.
Undervoltage Loc kout
The M A X606/M A X607 m onitor the supply voltage at IN
and operate for supply voltages greater than 2.8V.
W hen an undervoltage condition is detected, control
logic turns off the output pow er FET and discharges the
soft-start capacitor to ground. The control logic holds
the output pow er FET in an off state until the supply
voltag e rises ab ove the und ervoltag e threshold , at
w hich tim e a soft-start cycle begins.
Shutdown Mode
C onnecting S H D N to G N D w ill hold the M A X 606/
M A X607 in shutdow n m ode. In shutdow n, the output
pow er FET is off, but there is still an external path from
IN to the load via the inductor and diode. The internal
reference also turns off, w hich causes the soft-start
capacitor to discharge. Typical device standby current
in shutdow n m ode is 0.01A . For norm al operation,
connect SH D N to IN . A soft-start cycle is initiated w hen
the M A X606/M A X607 exit shutdow n.
__________Applic ations Information
Induc tor Selec tion
U se a 5H inductor for the M A X606 and a 10H induc-
tor for the M A X607. See Table 3 for a list of com ponent
suppliers. H igher inductor values allow greater load
currents due to operation in continuous-conduction
m ode, w hile low er inductor values lead to sm aller phys-
ical size due to low er energy-storage requirem ents and
low er output-filter-capacitor requirem ents. Potential
d raw b acks of using low er ind uctor values are
increased output ripple, low er efficiency, and low er out-
put-current capability due to operation in discontinu-
ous-cond uction m od e. (S ee the M axim um O utp ut
C urrent vs. Ind uctor V alue g rap h in the Typ ical
O perating C haracteristics.)
The inductor m ust have a saturation (increm ental) cur-
rent rating equal to the peak sw itch-current lim it, w hich
is 1.1A . For highest efficiency, m inim ize the inductors
D C resistance.

Diode Selec tion
The M A X 606/M A X 607s hig h sw itching freq uency
dem ands a high-speed rectifier. U se a Schottky diode
w ith at least a 0.5A average current rating and a 1.2A
peak current rating, such as an M B R 0520L. See Table
3 for a list of com ponent suppliers.
Capac itor Selec tion
Output Filter Capacitor
The output voltage ripple is a function of the output
cap acitors eq uivalent series resistance (E S R ) and
cap acitance. For b est p erform ance, use ceram ic
capacitors. H igher-ESR capacitors, such as tantalum s,
w ill cause excessive ripple. See Table 3 for a list of
com ponent suppliers.
The output voltage ripple is approxim ately 100m Vp-p
for the 12V Standard A pplication C ircuit (Figure 1) and
50m V for the 5V circuit (Figure 2). To further reduce this
ripple, or to reduce the ripple on a different application
circuit, increase the value of the output filter capacitor.
If this capacitor is low ESR (e.g., ceram ic), the output
voltage ripple w ill be dom inated by this capacitance.
Input Bypass Capacitors
For applications w here the M A X606/M A X607 are physi-
cally close to the input supplys filter capacitor (e.g., in
PC M C IA drivers from the host com puter), the input
bypass capacitor m ay not be necessary.
In other applications w here the M A X606/M A X607 are
m ore than a few inches a aw ay from the supply (such
as m em ory cards), the input bypass capacitor is need-
ed to reduce reflected current ripple to the supply and
im prove efficiency by creating a low -im pedance path
for the ripple current. U nder these circum stances, the
associated high Q and low ESR of ceram ic capacitors
do not dim inish the problem . Therefore, include som e
low -Q , m oderate-ESR capacitance (e.g., tantalum ) at
the input in order to reduce ringing. See Table 3 for a
list of com ponent suppliers.
Layout
The M A X606/M A X607s high-frequency operation and
high peak currents m ake PC board layout critical to
m inim ize g round b ounce and noise. Locate inp ut
bypass and output filter capacitors as close to the
device pins as possible. A ll connections to O U T (and to
FB w hen operating in adjustable-output m ode) should
also be kept as short as possible. A ground plane is
recom m ended. Solder G N D and PG N D directly to the
ground plane. R efer to the M A X606/M A X607 evaluation
kit m anual for a suggested surface-m ount layout.
