the core of her mystery is this: Why didn't
Vivian Maier show anyone her pictures?"
Since her death in 2009, Vivian Maier has become a —Wall Street Journal

photo negatives and prints found in a storage locker

Puerto Rico, and America. These eye-to-eye portraits,
published for the first time, are the single constant in
her lifetime of photographic work. Maier is often cast
as a quirky, antisocial character, moving on the out-
skirts of real connection; but these photographs show
something more. Printed with the latest technology,
the book utilizes a modified 4-color process that pro-

Combined with 15u stochastic screening, Maier's 96
photographs in this volume are spectacularly sharp,
full-range black-and-white reproductions.

The challenges of moving the elderly from one
home to the next are frequently faced by both
generations: seniors and their adult children. This
book of compelling stories about this later-in-life
event, often unexpected in its timing and scope,
delivers points of view from the parents, adult chil-

pertaining to personal possessions, and sharing and

those coping through this difficult transitional time,
reminding readers that they are not alone. The

Mexico has much to offer a traveling woman: the

people, the beaches, and the slow pace of life
all make it a struggle to return to the United States
when the vacation is over. But narcotics traffick-
ing and related violence have caused the media
to focus largely on the negative issues concern-
ing Mexico, making it a seemingly scary place to
go. This book shows how Mexico is still a safe and
beautiful country when sticking to the right areas
and using caution. It avoids the conflict zones of
the north, instead focusing on southern Mexico,
from ancient ruins to crystal blue seas and lush,
tropical jungles.

Few people have the energy, vision, or talent that
Evelyn Swensson has. Married at age 20, she
passed up an opportunity to attend the Juilliard
School of Music to raise a family. But when her chil-
dren went to college, she followed them. Attending
nearby West Chester University, she then earned an
MA in music in three years and successfully re-
sumed her career. Over the next three decades,
she sang, conducted, and composed. She com-
pleted her musical career having written a dozen
children’s operas, which have been performed
thousands of times in the United States and abroad.
While her personal accomplishments are extraordi-
nary, the most remarkable feature of this picture-
filled memoir are the notes in its concluding
segment. These have been sent by the stars (now
grown) of her operas. Some achieved stardom
on a national stage, while some are building prom-
ising careers. Others have become scientists and
professionals, while others still are in college. They
all share a love and admiration for their mentor,
who instilled her love of music in these remarkable
members of a new generation.

It’s 1993, and the Teen Spirit Generation pulses to

Maggie Lynch is plucked from her blue-collar
Chicago neighborhood to a small town on the Irish
Sea. Surviving off care-packages of Spin magazine

When tragedy and first love simultaneously strike,
Maggie embarks upon a forbidden quest to fulfill a
dying wish. Her pilgrimage takes her from the
coastal town of Bray to a dodgy youth hostel in
Dublin and finally to a life-altering Nirvana concert
in Rome. Maggie finds adventure, amazing music,
and a mess of trouble, but also a previously un-

This exploration of prejudice and what enables
and disables change is set against the backdrop
of the Civil Rights Movement from 1954 to 1964 and
told from three very different perspectives. To Joan

Mississippi, where family roots are as deep as those
of the towering loblolly pines, Joan simply wants to

white folks’ houses, freedom is the size of a human
heart, never bigger or smaller. It comes from within
and can’t be given or taken away. And, as her
waiting-on-heaven Baptist preacher and white-
controlled schools have taught her, freedom takes

Fledgling, the first book in The Dragonrider
Chronicles, sold more than 30,000 copies
in its previous digital incarnation

What kind of power is lurking inside him? After a

year of training to become a dragonrider, Jaevid
Broadfeather has been sent home to rest during a
three-month interlude. But when he returns to find
the king drake has chosen Beckah Derrick as his
new rider, Jaevid realizes something big is about
to happen. Every fiber of his being is pushed to the
breaking point as Jaevid battles through his avian
year, preparing for the final graduation test of the
battle scenario. But there is more standing in his
way than a few pushups and fancy sword moves.
Jaevid must face a new fear as he is tormented
by a gruesome nightmare of a mysterious gray elf
warrior murdering the royal family of Maldobar. It
seems obvious to him that this is some kind of mes-
sage about how the war started long ago—until
Felix assures him the king is very much alive. With his
strange powers growing stronger by the day, and
that violent dream replaying in his mind every night,
Jaevid no longer wonders if he will pass his avian
Avian year or not—he wonders if he will even survive it.
The truth will soon be set loose.

Arabella Holmes is different than other girls her age:

she doesn’t fit the profile of a typical lady from the

was to become a purveyor of abnormal science,

Watson arrives at the Mutter Museum with a double
assignment—to become a finder of abnormal an-

get her to speak to him instead of throwing knives
in his general direction. But this is no time for child’s

When Claire Mallory’s father leaves, her mom
moves them to a new town and into a dilapidated
Victorian house. The old house creaks and whistles,
and smells . . . well, like it’s been abandoned for
years. But as the nights grow longer and the shad-
ows take on substance, Claire wonders if the
strange sounds and occurrences might be more
than the house showing its age. Just as things start
to pick up in Claire’s love life, her mother becomes
possessed. In an attempt to save her mother and
their new home, Claire enlists the help of two boys,
each of whom is interested in Claire for very differ-
ent reasons. As she chooses one boy over the
other, something dangerous is unleashed, and the
spirits make their move. They aren’t content to
moan and scream inside Claire’s house, or even
control her mom. They want a taste of freedom,
and they’ll use Claire to get it. But is Claire strong
enough to fight off the evil spirits, or will they claim
her and her mom before it’s all over?

When the villain Wormzilla attacks the school with
his army of worms, Alien Dude uses his super powers
to destroy them all. This first entry in an early-reader
adventure series for reluctant boy (and girl) readers
features chapters and multiple plots alongside hilar-

Teachers will appreciate the simple sentences and
repeating phrases necessary for beginning readers,
making the book ideal for the classroom. Boys
reading below grade level who require boy-friendly,
age-appropriate content will avoid the embarrass-
ment of reading “baby” books and, at the same
time, read with success.

What is it?
Small Press United (SPU) is a major distribution option, for new and small publishers, from IPG, the
independent press distributor renowned for bringing titles to an industry-wide level through the
widest variety of sales channels. SPU shares IPG’s sales force throughout the U.S. and Canada
to reach thousands of accounts, including chain and independent bookstores, online retailers,
national wholesalers, library and specialty wholesalers, gift and specialty retail, museums, and
more. SPU does this quicker than other distributors by bypassing the traditional long lead times
needed to get books into the market.

What do I get?
SPU provides publishers with:
• 36 trade sales reps throughout the U.S. and • A list of essential media contacts for
Canada pitching and hand-selling titles soliciting reviews
directly to book buyers • State-of-the-art reporting tools, accessible
• 120 gift sales reps for applicable titles to 24 hours a day, to supervise sales and
reach specialty retail in all regional markets inventory activity
• Nationally recognized metadata trans- • E-book distribution to all major digital vendors
mission services that command availability • Optional print-on-demand services that can
and accuracy in customer databases reduce a publisher’s overall cost and risk
throughout the industry in 4 to 6 weeks
• Membership to the Independent Book
• A suite of online publisher education tools, Publishers Association (IBPA), the leading
including how-to guides for planning an organization for publisher education,
effective publicity campaign, honing affordable marketing programs,
successful pitching techniques, writing press and networking
materials, and setting up author tours

How much does it cost?

SPU was created specifically to accommodate the needs of small publishers who want to
invest in the creation and promotion of their titles rather than struggle with the considerable
challenges of selling and distributing themselves. Publishers pay a one-time $200 set-up fee
upon signing the distribution agreement and 30% of the net sales thereafter. There are no
hidden storage costs or extraneous monthly charges.

How do I get started?

Applying to SPU is easy. The online application can be com-
pleted in a matter of minutes, and you can expect to hear
back regarding your submission within 5–7 business days.
