Three-Month-Old
Prince George
Christened In
London
By Gregory Katz
DRESSED IN a lace and satin gown
designed in the 1840s, Britains threemonth-old future monarch, Prince
George, was christened October 23
with water from the River Jordan at
a rare gathering of four generations of
the royal family.
The occasion had historic overtones:
the presence of Britains 87-year-old
monarch and three future kings,
Princes Charles, William and, of
course, little George.
The Queen, usually the center of
attention, quietly ceded the spotlight
to her rosy-cheeked great-grandson,
who seemed to wave at her when he ar-

Hurricane-Force Gusts
Batter UK, Europe; 13 Dead
By Gregory Katz
A SAVAGE coastal storm powered by
hurricane-force gusts slashed its way
through Britain and western Europe October 21 and 22, felling trees, flooding
lowlands and snarling traffic in the air, at
sea and on land. At least 13 people were
reported killed.
It was one of the worst storms to hit the
region in years. The deadly tempest had no
formal name and wasnt officially classified as a hurricane due to a meteorological
standard but it was dubbed the St Jude
storm (after the patron saint of lost causes)
and stormageddon on social networks.
Gusts of 99mph were reported on the
Isle of Wight in southern England, while
gusts up to 80mph hit the British mainland. Later in the day, the Danish capital
of Copenhagen saw record gusts up of to
120mph and an autobahn in central Germany was shut down by gusts up to 62mph.
All across the region, people were
warned to stay indoors. Hundreds of trees
were uprooted or split, blocking roads
and crushing cars. The Dutch were told to
leave their beloved bicycles at home for
safetys sake.
EXPLOSION
Two people were killed in London by
a gas explosion and a British teen who
played in the storm-driven surf was swept
out to sea. A man in Denmark was killed
when a brick flew off and hit him in the
head.
Despite the strength of its gusts, the
storm was not considered a hurricane because it didnt form over warm expanses
of open ocean like the hurricanes that batter the Caribbean and the United States.
Britains national weather service, the
Met Office, said Britain does not get hur-

Part of the Queens garden was transformed into a football pitch last week as it
played host to two amateur teams to mark the
150th anniversary of the Football Association.
Prince William, president of the FA and
an Aston Villa fan, dreamed up the idea of
the match between two west London-based
teams Civil Service FC, the last survivor
of the 11 teams that formed the Football
Association in 1863, and Polytechnic FC,
formed back in 1875.
He also had a kickabout as he hosted
the first official football match to be played
at Buckingham Palace and after the match
was presenting medals to 150 grassroots
volunteers in recognition of their dedication
to the sport.
The match formed the centrepiece of the
FAs Grassroots Heroes Day, celebrating the
work of volunteers.
Gardeners are under strict instructions to
get the garden back to normal before Her Majesty return to London from Balmoral. Queen
Victoria would NOT have been amused!
And finally.....

A BRITISH judge has cleared Bernard
Madoffs sons of wrongdoing in a case
brought against them by the liquidator of
his estate in Britain, saying in a written ruling that the pairs honesty was not in doubt.
Judge Andrew Popplewell said last
month that the brothers, Mark and Andrew,
were among several UK directors of Bernard Madoffs London-based securities
firm whose reputations had been tainted
by association with the elder Madoffs
multibillion-dollar fraud. In dismissing
the civil case against them all, the judge
delivered a glowing endorsement of their
character.
Their honesty and integrity has been
vindicated, he said.
Mark and Andrew Madoff long played
a lead role in the drama surrounding their
disgraced financier father. They first
alerted authorities in 2008 after the elder
Madoff confessed that his highly regarded
investment business was nothing more
than a Ponzi scheme.

The pair held their silence as the details
of the breathtaking fraud spilled out into

Government Introduces
Tough Immigration Bill
By Cassandra Vinograd
THE GOVERNMENT took another crack
at curbing illegal immigration last month,
introducing a bill that would require immigration checks to accompany private housing applications and health care access.
The bill has been slammed by lawyers
and human rights campaigners, who warn
it will lead to unlawful discrimination.
Immigration is a sensitive political issue
in Britain given the countrys struggling
economy and cuts in public services.
The conservative-led government of
Prime Minister David Cameron wants to
reduce net migration from non-European
countries from 176,000 last year to fewer
than 100,000 before the next election in
2015.
Immigration Minister Mark Harper said
that the new bill will stop migrants from

Rufus Norris
Named Chief Of
National Theatre
By Jill Lawless
BRITAINS National Theatre last month
named stage director and former actor
Rufus Norris as its next chief. He is the
first actor since Laurence Olivier to lead
Britains biggest and most influential
theater company.
Norris will take over in April 2015 from
Nicholas Hytner, who has led the statesubsidized company through a decade of
commercial and critical successes, including Broadway runs for shows such as One
Man, Two Guvnors and War Horse.
Last year the Nationals shows played to
3.6 million people around the worldat its
London home, on tour and in live cinema
broadcastsand it took in 87m.
Norris acknowledged nerves about the
scale of the job, but said he would approach it with gusto and continue efforts
begun under Hytner to attract younger
and more diverse audiences and artistic
collaborators.
Norris, 48, trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and worked as an
actor I wasnt quite as good as Olivier
before making a name as a bold and versatile director of plays, musicals and opera.

WHEN THE pilot of his small plane
collapsed in the cockpit, passenger John
Wildey took the controls of the Cessna 172
over England, and suddenly began his first
experience of landing with some help
from instructors on the ground.
I hadnt a clue what to do to get down,
the 77-year-old Wildey told the BBC. Ive
never flown a plane before.
Officials at Humberside Airport in
northwest England put emergency plans
into place and flight instructors were
called in to help Wildey after the mayday
call went out.
Soon after he landed, his friend the
pilot, the only other person aboard the
aircraft, died.
Wildey praised the flight instructors
who talked him through several attempts to
land before he touched down in the dark in
what he described as a controlled crash.
He said he began to veer off the runway
as he was attempting to reach the brakes
and could see a wall rapidly approaching.
BUMPS
I thought I aint going to do it, but
we managed to stop in the end, he said.
Emergency services were waiting when
the plane touched down, after a few bumps.
Rob Murray, one of the flight instructors, said he was glad to have helped and
that Wildey did a remarkable job, given
he had never flown a plane before.
Its a fantastic feeling, knowing I have
achieved something and probably saved
somebodys life, Murray said.
He said the atmosphere in the control
tower was tense and there were handshakes
but no cheers when the plane touched
down.
The emergency landing occurred not
far from Sandtoft Airfield, where the plane
had planned to return after a short flight.
At a news conference at Humberside
Airport, commercial director Paul Litten
expressed his condolences to the family of
the man who died. Police said an inquest
will be carried out to establish what caused
the pilots death.

Vauxhall Astra
LAST MONTH I wrote about the most expensive cars in the world with a mention of the
cheapest car also.
Well, the majority of the new cars sold today are the less expensive models, compact
cars as they are referred to in the US. I call
these bread and butter cars. An example of
this is that new car sales volume in the UK at
the moment are at the highest they have been
for over five years and the leader is the Ford
Fiesta which has a base price of 9,759. A
few enhancements though and the price can
escalate to 17,545.
It has been about 10 years since the last
Ford motor car was built in England which
proves that many British motorists are not
too patriotic when purchasing a new motor
car. The Ford Fiestas that are for sale in the
UK are all made in Germany, despite the fact
that the cost of producing a car in Germany
is about 1.5 times the cost of what it would
be to build the same car in the UK.
September 2013 sales figures in the UK
for the Ford Fiesta showed a little over 20,600
units, next in line was the Vauxhall Corsa, with
14,500 units sold in September 2013. Sizewise, and looks-wise for that matter, there

Ministers Plan
WWI Centenary
In Paris
By Greg Keller
FOR THE 100TH anniversary of World
War I, officials from about 30 countries
are meeting in Paris to plan four years of
commemorative events.
At least 8.5 million soldiers are believed
to have perished in the 1914-18 war.
France, where the majority of Western
Front fighting took place, is taking a leading role in the preparations.
Senior officials from countries including the US, Britain and Australia were
gathering Thursday under the Arc de
Triomphe for a ceremonial re-lighting of
the eternal flame that marks the tomb of
Frances unknown soldier.
Meetings were held last month under the
golden dome of the 17th-century Invalides
monument, hosted by Frances veterans
affairs minister, Kader Arif.
President Francois Hollande is to unveil details of the commemorations on
November 8.
The Australian minister for veterans
affairs, Michael Ronaldson, said it was
important that participants start defining
where we all want each other to be and
when.
COMMEMORATE
Well be talking about those key events
that everyone wants to commemorate.
Well be talking about what the hopes and
aspirations of each country are regarding
the different commemoration events, Ronaldson told The Associated Press.
Each nation has their own significant
wartime eventsAustralia and New Zealand, for example put particular emphasis
on the 1915 battle of Gallipoli, where their
joint force was defeated by the O
ttoman
Turks.
The fact that we do all have different periods we want to commemorate is
important, Ronaldson said. I think that
will make it work as opposed to detract
from it.
Ronaldson, whose grandfather fought
on the Western Front, also visited the
Australian National Memorial in VillersBretonneux, where the names of over
10,000 Australians who died in France
during World War I and who have no
known grave are inscribed.
Those visits for all Australians are
always deeply emotional and it was the
same for me yesterday, Ronaldson said.
Finding Frances...
Love Letters From
A Flight Lieutenant
By Catherine Harris
UNION JACK newspaper reader Cathleen
Harris is the author of Finding Frances...Love
Letters From A Flight Lieutenant which was just
released in March 2013 on Outskirts Press.
Eric Hutchin was
17 when he joined the
Royal Air Force to fight
the Nazis in World War
II. This book is the tender side of a military
young man in love.
He trained as a fighter
pilot at Falcon Field, a
Hollywood-financed
military base built in
Mesa, in the Arizona desert, and there he fell
in love with 17-year-old Frances Mackenzie.
For the remainder of that savage war, Eric
flew iconic Spitfires and Typhoons, protecting the shores of England, intercepting V-1
rockets, liberating Holland and writing to
Frances. Clever and poignant, his love letters, sketches and photos form the personal
chronicle of one young flight lieutenant and
his love for his special girl, but of course this
is also a universal story the coming-of-age
tale of every young man who goes to war.
The 188 page book is a quick read but
a very thought provoking book. It is a bittersweet yet poignant clever book and hard
to put down. A must have for any history
buff who loves learning about the Royal Air
Force and the fascinating story behind Falcon
Field plus a bit of Arizona history too. The
relationship that kept this young soldier going
through war is a true testament to the power
of love in the toughest of times. It took 60
years for it to be written and published.
Finding Frances is filled with historical
photos, interesting information about WWII
aircraft and life as a wartime pilot. The letters
are an intimate connection with the real life
personalities in Finding Frances. The story is
about the amazing journey of a pilot required
to do his duty and serve the nation. His love is
revealed in his letters which bare the struggle
of separation and his desire for his future.

Ferdinand And
Hodgson Join
FA Commission
ENGLAND coach Roy Hodgson and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand
have agreed to join the Football Associations commission to improve the state of
English football.
The appointments came a day after
the FA was accused by one of its board
members of letting down so many black
and ethnic minority people after setting
up an all-white commission.
FA chairman Greg Dyke said the body
had been in touch with Ferdinand for
some time but needed to make sure he had
enough time to participate in the debate.
Last month, board member Heather
Rabbatts, who was born in Jamaica and
is of mixed race, criticized the lack of
diversity on the commission.
Ferdinand, who has retired from international football but still plays for
Manchester United, is the first non-white
member of the panel.
JOKE
Hodgson found himself at the heart of
a media storm after making a joke about a
monkey at halftime during Englands 2-0
World Cup qualifying win over Poland.
Hodgson, who has apologized for his remarks, said he made the joke to encourage
his players to pass the ball more to Andros
Townsend, who is black.
Dyke is also counting on Hodgsons
experience to help the FA build long-term
success for the national team.
It is important Roy can offer his views
as the current manager of the national team
and share the knowledge he has gained
when working for many years in a number
of countries, Dyke said. I wanted the international fixtures to be completed before
announcing this to avoid any distractions
for Roy at such an important time.

THE SPORTS executive responsible for Usain Bolts Puma sponsorship has been hired
as chief executive of the British Olympic Association.
Bill Sweeney will start in the BOA role next month, running the day-to-day operations
under chairman Sebastian Coe.
The 55-year-old Briton has spent the past three years as head of business development
at Puma, which included directing Bolts commercial activities for the sportswear firm
in connection with the 2012 London Olympics.
Sweeney will oversee Britains preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi
and the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
He replaces Andy Hunt, who left in February 2013
Coe says Sweeneys business and sport experience, and his impressive record in
developing global sports brands, makes him the right choice for this role.
Sweeney spent seven years as a senior vice president of the Adidas Reebok group
before joining Puma.

Former British heavyweight champion
Dereck Del Boy Chisora (18-4) stopped
Edmund Gerber (23-2) when the referee

September, at the Copper Box in London.
Chisora severely bloodied the German in
the third round, followed by a series of aggressive combinations Olympic medalist
Anthony Joshua, who took gold in the superheavyweight division, got his professional
career off to a flying start at Londons O2

of Emanuele Leo. While the Italian had remained unbeaten after eight fights, the 238lb
Londoner remained unruffled and untroubled
by the challenger WBA, IBF and WBO
champion Wladimir Klitscho, pushed his
record to 61-3, after beating the unbeaten
Russian, Alexander Povetkin (18-1) with a

Part of the deal for David Beckhams move
to the Los Angeles Galaxy some years ago,
was a promise by the MLS that he would be
able to buy a new franchise team for around
$25m. Beckham is talking with Bolivian
cell-phone mogul Marcelo Claure, and has
been investigating the possibility of a Miami
franchise. The lack of a suitable stadium
may have tempered enthuisiasms, because
MLS officials are looking for a new 18,00020,000 seated venue that would cost around
$85m to build with modern media facilities.
Beckham and Claure may not have Miami to
themselves any longer however, as a London
group of financiers led by Alessandro Butini,
have recently held exploratory talks with MLS
Commissioner Don Garber. The Italian, like
Beckham and Claure, feels Miami has distinct
possibilities.
Dario Franchitti, four time IndyCar
champion and three times winner of the
Indianapolis 500, got in a nasty collision with
Takuma Sato, during the final lap of the Grand
Prix of Houston, October 6. The Scottish
driver became airborne as he crashed into a
spectator fence, where debris injured thirteen
fans and an Indycar official. Franchitti was
rushed to hospital and treated for a broken
ankle, several fractures of his spine, cracked
ribs, plus multiple abrasions and bruises. Its
been a lean year for the Lothian Scot, who
recently had a temporary split from actress
wife Ashley Judd, and remains winless during this years IndyCar schedule.
International soccer coaches make big
money, and become fashionable sporting
icons, but at the other end of the scale things
are very different. Matthew Green coaches
the Turks and Caicos Island, which is the
worst team in the world according to FIFA,
who gives it a 207th world ranking alongside
Bhutan and San Marino. The 41-year-old
Englishman, who was signed by Hull City as
teenager, has been in the Caribbean for over a
dozen years and loves the sandy beaches and
blue seas. The Turks and Caicos are made
up of forty small islands, eight inhabited, with
a population of around 20,000. The oversea
British territory has six teams, mostly ex-pats,
leaving coach Green a squad of around 25
actual players to pick an international side. In
fact, the Islands have not played an international game for two years because they could
not raise the regulation, eleven man team,
but FIFA funding did get a 5,000 capacity
stadium built. They were eliminated from the
2014 World Cup in the first qualifying round,
losing to the Bahamas after a 10-0 losing
aggregate. Coach Greens enthusiasm has
led to some 500 youngsters registering for
his youth programmes, making his dream of
moving off the bottom of FIFAs world ranking
system an eventual reality.

The third round of the Capital One English

Arsenal: Mikel Arteta converted a penalty kick early in the
second half and then was sent
off as the Gunners held first place
by winning, 2-0, at Crystal Palace. Arteta
fouled ex-Gunner Marouane Chamakh about
50 yards from goal yet still was dismissed;
keeper Wojciech Szczesnys save denied
Palace until Olivier Girouds late clincher.
Mezut Ozil scored twice after Jack Wilsheres
opener had set the Gunners on track for a 4-1
defeat of Norwich City. Wilshires secondhalf equalizer provided a 1-1 tie at West
Bromwich Albion.
Aston Villa: Christian Benteke,
back in the lineup after sitting out
with hip trouble, failed to convert a
penalty kick in the eighth minute at
home against Everton in what became a 2-0
loss. Andreas Weimann, Gabriel Agbonlahor,
and Benteke failed to beat Tim Howard in the
run of play as well. Without Benteke, Villa
piled up an impressive 18-6 advantage in
shots at Hull City but were unable to break
through in the 0-0 tie.
Cardiff City: Ex-Canary David
Marshall frustrated his former club
numerous times in Cardiffs 0-0
tie at Norwich. He recorded 10
saves and got some help from the referee
when Leroy Fer put the ball into the net after
receiving a throw-in awarded when Cardiff
had intentionally put the ball out of play. The
goal was disallowed. Near the end of the first
half Marshall tipped a shot onto the post and
then smothered an attempt to stuff in the
rebound. Jordon Mutch scored in the 10th
minute to give them a 1-0 lead at Chelsea,
but a first-half equalizer and three goals inside
of 16 minutes left them with a 4-1 defeat.
Chelsea: Fernando Torres
pounced on a Willian through
ball misplayed by the goalkeeper
to score the winner in stoppage
time of a 2-1 home victory over Manchester
City. Willian had replaced Andre Schurrle,
who scored his first Chelsea goal in the
33rd minute. Eden Hazard and Willian scored
late goals one minute apart to break open a
1-1 game and knock off Norwich City, 3-1.
Two Hazard goals bookended tallies by
Samuel Eto and Oscar in a 4-1 demolition
of Cardiff City.
Crystal Palace: Caretaker
manager Keith Millen, appointed
after the dismissal of Ian Holloway, debuted in a 2-0 home
loss to Arsenal. He made six
changes, including centerback
Danny Gabbidon, forward Marouane Chamakh (against his former club), and Adlene
Guedioura, whose foul produced the penalty
kick by which the Gunners went ahead. Holloway departed after a 4-1 home loss to Fulham
in which Adrian Mariappa headed home his
first Palace goal for a brief lead.
Everton: American keeper
Tim Howard repelled an early
penalty kick with a stunning onehand save, and Romelu Lukaku
and Leon Osman scored in the second half to
earn Everton a 2-0 win at Aston Villa. Osman
set up Lukakus goal in the 68th minute and
tallied himself 13 minutes later. Kevin Mirallas
scored in the eighth minute and set up the
winning goal in the 57th with a perfect cross
that Steven Pienaar, who had missed six
weeks with a hamstring injury, with his first
touch of the game. Howard tipped a penalty
kick onto the post, only for it to rebound off

Scotland ended their schedule at Hampden Park, when they claimed their first home
victory in Group A. Robert Snodgrass edged
them ahead of Croatia in the 28th minute,
Barry Bannan missed a penalty in the 72nd
minute, but Steven Naismith scored seconds
later. Gordon Strachan was happy with the
2-0 result, and sees Scotland as qualifiers
in the 2016 Euro-championships At the
Cardiff City Stadium, Simon Church cracked
in a winner on the 67th minute, while Aaron
Ramsey should have made it two five minutes from time, but he missed a penalty.
It was Chris Colemans first win as Welsh
coach, as Wales prevailed 1-0 over FYR
Macedonia. In Brussels, the Welsh faced the
most improved side in Europe, but held on
until De Bruyne put Belgium ahead in the 64th
minute. Aaron Ramsey equalized just before
the final whistle for a 1-1 result. Little bit of
Welsh football history occurred near the end
when Harry Wilson came on as substitute.
Wilson, a Liverpool Academy player at just
16 years and 207 days old became the
youngest player to ever appear for Wales
Northern Ireland went 2-0 down at Baku,
against Azerbajian, and Jonny Evans got
his marching order in the final minute. At Tel
Aviv, Israel took the lead two minutes before
the break, while Steven Davis leveled it for
the Irish in the 72 minute for a 1-1 tie.

Beckhams Mission
Was To Be Famous
By Rob Harris
A DECADE after kicking a boot at David
Beckhams head, Alex Ferguson used his
autobiography to criticize the stars apparent
pre-occupation with fame.
At Manchester United, Ferguson developed Beckham into one of the worlds most
recognizable sportsmen, but the midfielder
left United in 2003 for Real
Madrid under a cloud after his
relationship with the manager
broke down.
David was the only player
I managed who chose to be
famous, who made it his mission
to be known outside the game,
the 71-year-old Ferguson wrote
in his autobiography, released
last month. I felt uncomfortable with the celebrity aspect
of his life.
By moving to the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007 after four
years at Madrid, Ferguson said Beckham
surrendered a part of his career.
In the 2002-03 season, Ferguson had concerns that Beckhams application level had
dropped and his work-rate was dropping.
There was no way back after the February
2003 match against Arsenal. Ferguson was
unhappy that Beckham neglected to track
back when Arsenal scored its second goal
in a 2-0 win.
In the dressing room, Ferguson recalls
Beckham swearing nearby before the boot
flew.
I moved towards him, and as I approached I kicked a boot. It hit him right
above the eye, Ferguson recalled. Of
course he rose to have a go at me and the
players stopped him.
After that, Ferguson told the board that
Beckham had to leave.
WAYNE ROONEY
The final days of Fergusons reign were
overshadowed by Rooney asking to leave
United due to his lack of playing time. The
transfer request was refused by successor
David Moyes.
In the book, Ferguson recalled Rooney
telling him United should have signed Germany playmaker Mesut Ozil in 2010 before
he joined Real Madrid from Werder Bremen.
My reply was that it was none of his
business who we should have gone for,
Ferguson wrote.
Do you think I would drop Wayne
Rooney if he was playing the way he is now?
Absolutely no way, Ferguson said at the
Institute of Directors in London.
ROY KEANE
In the book Ferguson criticizes the savage tongue of former captain Roy Keane,
who was forced out of United in 2005 after
the Irishmans rant against his teammates and
assistant coach Carlos Queiroz on Uniteds
television channel. The interview has never
been aired.
I just couldnt lose my control in this
situation, Ferguson said last month. If I
had let it pass and allowed it to happen the
