(CNN) -- With several weeks having passed since Thailand's
nationwide curfew was completely lifted, Bangkok's nightlife is back
in full swing.
Not only are tourists returning to the city's usual party haunts, from
Khao San Road to Sukhumvit soi 11, they're coming back to
notorious red light districts, such as Patpong, Soi Cowboy and Nana
Plaza.
Despite the evolution of the city's sophisticated nightlife, its seedier
neighborhoods continue to offer what many tourists consider an
essential Bangkok experience.
For some tempted to sample a slice of the city's seedier side,
however, the tales can be off-putting.
Stories of that "one night in Bangkok" gone wrong are a consistent
topic of posts in travel forums, ranging from complaints of paying
ridiculously high prices for drinks at seedy sex shows to claims by
victims of being drugged in red light zones only to wake up in hotel
rooms with a headache and an empty wallet.
Now, at least two companies are cashing in on the demand from
timid thrill seekers who want to safely experience Bangkok's
infamously raunchy shows and scandalous fetish clubs by offering
the security of a chaperoned, well planned and efficient evening.
Guests can customize their night on the town by choosing where to
go, such as visiting a transsexual bar or doing a deeper descent
into escapades too graphic to detail here.

Alternately, tourists can go in for lofty, first-class treatment with fine
dining, expensive cigars and high-brow entertainment -- but most
customers prefer to cut to the chase and book a red-lit bar crawl,
say tour organizers.
These streamlined door-to-door tours include a chauffeured air-
conditioned van, lots of alcohol and a guide who stays with the
group the entire time.
Customers usually go with friends, relatives or colleagues on private
tours to celebrate a birthday or pre-wedding bash for a bride or
groom, or just for fun while on vacation in Thailand.

The Bangkok Hangover Tour offers an
imaginative and theatrical visit to some of the
city's best bars and nightclubs, and honors
the Hollywood movie "Hangover Part II,"
which is set primarily in Bangkok.
The Hangover Tour begins in the same bar
on Soi Cowboy where several of the movie's
scenes were filmed.
In the movie, one of the lead characters unknowingly cavorts with a
transgender Thai before waking up to discover a Maori-style Mike
Tyson tattoo on his face.
To emphasize that guests will be following some of that character's
footsteps, Hangover Tour guides stick a washable Maori tattoo on all
the guests' faces, heightening the sense of being in their own
version of the movie.
When the Hangover Tour recently guided the Johnson family from
Kent, England, through Bangkok's nightlife, the family allowed CNN
to tag along.

Sons 'come of age' on Hangover tour
After the guide adorned the mother, father and their two young adult
sons with Maori tattoo stickers, the visitors watched a nude show at
another Soi Cowboy bar, eyes widening as their drinks kicked in.
Their van then shuttled them to nearby Nana Entertainment Zone,
where transgender ladies in bikinis nuzzled the giggling family.
At another bar, both sons were lured on stage where two nude
women spanked them with paddles made of harmless sponge, while
the crowded bar's patrons roared with delight.
"My sons have absolutely come of age," marveled the 52-year-old
father, Phil. "Because they're slightly reserved, the guys. Anything
like this, they're not used to. They've grown up.
"And we are actually acting the movie."
"It's weird, because we are going in all the bars that they went in, in
the movie, and basically you're re-living what they did in the film,"
said 21-year-old Brad, after his onstage experience.
"You go into these bars and it's incredible what you see. It's strange.
You don't expect it to be how it is."
The tattoo sticker "acts like a mask ... and you just forget about who
you are back home, and you just sort of go with it," said Brad.
"Completely surreal," chimed his blushing brother, Cameron, 20.

The van then sped to Patpong Road to
sleazier shows.
The Johnson family chose to visit a
sadomasochistic "fetish" club, where whips
and chains hang on the walls.
While his parents and brother chuckled
mischievously, Cameron allowed himself to
be tied to a vertical rack and stripped,
exposing his bottom.
His father, shrieking hysterically, followed the entertainers' lead and
began lightly whipping his son in bondage, while everyone
convulsed with laughter and Cameron cheerfully yelped in a mix of
pain and delirium.
The young man then found himself tied up, in a tall cage, and
dominated by a leather-clad woman as if Cameron was a submissive
character in a Marquis de Sade novel.
"We offer a visit to a fetish club, which costs an extra 699 baht ($22)
per person," said tour supervisor Toby Newbold.
"People may not want to visit such a place on their own, but feel
more comfortable doing so in the comfort of a tour.
"I would say 70% to 80% of customers include the fetish club, which
has been a real surprise for us.
"Most people are shocked to find it quite erotic, and some come out
of their shell and want to participate."

'Safety and not being hassled' are sales points
Without extras, a Hangover Tour's basic price is 1,990 baht ($60),
including two drinks, transportation to and from your hotel, plus a
guide.
More than a thousand foreign customers have taken the tour since
it began in 2011, according to Newbold.
"We expected the tour to be mostly young male customers, but the
tour is very popular with couples and we have lots of groups of girls
and women taking the tour," said Newbold. "We assume safety, and
not being hassled, are a factor.
"This is a lighthearted look at Bangkok's nightlife. We just want
people to have a good time."
The Hangover Tour doesn't duplicate the movie's dangerous
adventures.
"In the movie, there is sex with a ladyboy, Stu gets a real face tattoo,
there is drug taking and a young guy loses his finger," said Newbold.
"So I would have to say our tour is a little bit more toned down."

"Crazy fun" but at what price?
Another Bangkok nightlife tour, Thailand
Bucks and Hens, is similar.
Five Australian male executives in their mid-
20s allowed CNN to accompany their Bucks
tour, but asked not to be identified.
Their tour began in a scuzzier bar where girls
hassled the five men for tips, confusing and
embarrassing them when they were advised
by their Bucks tour chaperone to give a bit of cash.
Their Bucks tour then moved to the same Nana Plaza bar where the
Hangover's Brits were spanked.
One of the Australians was also coaxed onstage and spanked by
two girls waving sponge paddles while the audience cheered.
"It's crazy fun," one of the group said.
Capping their evening, the Aussies arrived at a popular upmarket
Sukhumvit Road nightclub, and were escorted to an exclusive table.
A guide from Bucks and Hens says the tours, established more than
a year ago, have served more than a thousand customers, 75% of
them male.
Their favorite theme is "one crazy party night, with their best friends,
before they get married," he added.
The company doesn't provide information about prices, saying each
event differs, but all tours include transportation, a guide and lots of
alcohol.
Bucks and Hens runs tours elsewhere in Thailand, including female-
only Hens nights, usually on Koh Samui or Phuket Island.

Critics not impressed
Not everyone is happy about these tours.
"Sex tours to the nightlife in Bangkok, or anywhere, are harmful to
both the tourist and the women," according to Annie Dieselberg, the
American CEO of NightLight International, a Christian-based
organization active in Bangkok, Los Angeles, Atlanta and elsewhere.
The organization is working to end commercial sexual exploitation.
"Sex tours normalize the exploitation of women, and grooms men to
believe they have the right to be entertained at the expense of the
women," Dieselberg said after hearing about the Bangkok Hangover
Tour and Thailand Bucks and Hens.
"I have spoken to several thousand women in prostitution, from over
12 nations in the last 14 years, and 99% of them hated this work
and were only doing it because they saw no other way of meeting
the family economic needs and pressures.
"As time passes, the women deteriorate and lose sight of their true
identity and dreams for life.
"Many become [suicidal razor] cutters, and many become addicted
to alcohol and drugs to cope with the shame and self-hatred,"
Dieselberg said.

This article made me sick to my stomach. I lived in Bangkok for a year, working with an NGO that tried to help the young kids working on the
streets in those red light districts. The stories that they told us, and the ones that the women we met told us, were disturbing beyond any
belief. If I wrote a book about the horrible things many of them went through, it would be dismissed as "unrealistic" by anyone who hasn't
seen that side of life. The exploitation dealt on those streets is as blatant as it gets.

Lived in SE Asia for over five years continuously... I got some breaking news for you - "They" are not demonstrably different
from the west and certainly not "as different as night and day." What nominal cultural distinctions did exist are increasingly
eroding in the digital age, particularly to the young who make up most or near all of the sex trade.

I'm not American, respectfully, I live and grew up in Asia. I lived in Thailand myself. It's a gender exploitation issue, no matter
how guarded the Thais can be about the sex industry, it comes from poverty and pressure or abuse or a family history of
abuse, and I fully believe that the gentleman above was correct. But consumers believe what they need to. Yeah, there are
exceptions. I think I met like, 2.

Steve, I don't see where you get "American brush" . My friends who told horror stories of their time in the brothels were Thai,
Laotian, Uzbek, and Nepalese. I've head excellent accounts about the subject from Thai, Cambodian, and Ugandan women.
My friends who reacted with compassion and were trying to help stop the abuses came from many countries, including local
Thai men and women. And I'm in India. The fact that you're trying to use "well, not every woman as a horror story" as some
kind of defense is ridiculous. The rates at which terrible things happen to women in this profession, both to get them there in
the first place and then just as a cost of "doing business", should not be acceptable to anyone, anywhere.

Only way to stop this dirty industry is the western men and Chinese men frm China should stop visiting this country for sex.
Does the western government and the chinese government doing anything to stop the dirty minded trourist from visiting such
places.
I am sure sex industry will collapse in Thailand
Thai people are very very greedy for money, they just don't bothered about young girls anymore. The Thai parents are willing
to sell their own daughters mostly are under age into prostitution.
This has been happening since sex industry was growing in 70's.
How can you stop the child prostitution when the country itself encouraging???? It is so sad and I am always angry and mad

To be clear, the sex industry in Thailand was running long before the Vietnam War, the Vietnam war was just the
beginning of their famed sex tourism industry.
If the Western/Chinese (not to mention Middle Eastern and Japanese) men stop coming, most of the sex industry will
continue unabated, because the large majority of the men who are going to prostitutes in Thailand are Thai.
are right that demand is the center of the problem, and a drop in foreign demand would remove a significant wing of
the industry, a good bit of the money, and a lot of the government rationale for taking bribes and looking the other
way.

"dirty minded trourist from visiting such places" Apparently it is you and those like you who get to decide what is "dirty"
and what is not. Have you ever taken a moment to consider that others have different values and belief systems than
you, especially those from a different culture? And perhaps, people like you should stop judging other cultures by the
value system that your culture has so successfully conditioned you with and stop trying to impose your culture's value
system upon another culture? That's called oppression, you know?

Amen my brother. I lived in Thailand for 2 years and this article is disgusting. Some of these exploited young women have been sold
into sex trafficking by their own parents for money to buy drugs. Villages in the North and Northeast have large numbers of their
young women sold into sex slavery. CNN as a news organization should know better than to write an article about this depravity. A
vast majority of these young boys and girls did not choose to lead this type of horrific life. If it were up to me those individuals that
abuse these young people would be shot on sight.

Awe, the bleeding hearts are out in full force. I know what I'm talking about, and I won't explain why or how I know, but an
overwhelming majority of the girls working in the sex business in Thailand are there voluntarily because the money is good and they
don't have a stigma about sex like western valued bleeding hearts do. What's the difference between being paid cash up front or
being paid dinner, a movie and drinks? None, except only in pitifully societal conditioned small thinking minds. If you've ever "dated" in
the west, had intimate relations as a result of that "dating" and each party didn't pay their own expenses then you have participated
in prostitution (I know you're having problems getting your mind around that one). Additionally, I'm sure that some people are abused
in the sex business, just as in every every other sector of society, so don't go sensationalizing this as if it is exclusive only to the sex
business. BTW, you should have learned that everyone in Thailand has a story and most are carefully concocted
because they wouldn't be effective like they were on you)...especially in the environment that you claim to have spent time in.

"I have spoken to several thousand women in prostitution, from over 12

Well, I've spoken to many thousands of women (and men) working in the sex industry in dozens of nations in the last 34 years and,
honestly, this is as naive as the male patrons who believe that "they are very handsome men" because prostitutes tell them that. People in
the "hospitality" industry tell you what you want to hear. All this Christian NGO worker is hearing is confirmation bias.
The fact is most of the sex workers in Thailand (and numerous other countries) are willfully doing so for a variety of reasons, but mostly
because they earn much more than they would doing something else. A dancer at a go-go bar in Bangkok will earn 60-90,000 Baht per
month ($2-3,000 US), including salary, drink tips, and "activities". Compare this to the mid-level salary of a Thai university graduate with 5
years experience, who makes about 40,000 Baht monthly. In fact, plenty of the bar workers choose not to sleep with customers because
they make sufficient money without doing so.
And a sex worker's "family economic needs and pressures" are, on average, no greater or worse than anybody else, as is their job
satisfaction. A few of them actually enjoy their work, a few hate it, and the vast majority tolerate it, but stay in it for the money, same as
most people working in jobs they don't consider ideal.
I've also had the pleasure of speaking with tens of thousands of non-sex workers in numerous countries and, fact of the matter is that the
vast majority of people working in menial, physically demanding, low-paying jobs "hate their work and are only doing it because they saw no

Or was sold into it by her parents? Or was sexually abused before going into sex work?

"Or was sold into it by her parents"
Castrate all such couples.
" Or was sexually abused before going into sex work?"
Parents again.
"Or was told lies about what her first job would entail?"
If you are stup!!d enough to believe lies, then you will end up getting abused one way or another.
"who started the work while a runaway or a minor?"
Screw the parents.

Sunandan, how does blaming the parents in any way help the girls who were there now?
And the very fact that Thailand makes so much money off this industry ensures that they won't take any of
the measures you're suggesting. So what could does it do to write made-up hypothetical threats that won't
happen when we're dealing with a real situation that is happening right now?
By the way, the "If you are stupid enough" comment is so insulting and ignorant that it makes me ashamed
you're an Indian.

It is a losing battle. Prostitution was, is and shall remain part of the world. That said, it doesn't mean people give
up trying to at least stop forced ,coerced prostitution.
Who else do you plan to blame ? It is an easier decision for parents to sell their kids if said practice is endemic
to their culture.
Pointing out how certain measures won't help while offering zilch on your own part, what is the point of that?

And you know another thing you can do? You can stop minimizing the problem, like some people in this thread
have done. You can stop justifying the exploitation of women and girls, as some others here have done.
can also stop providing free advertising for agencies who are profiting off of that exploitation.
whole reason I posted on here in the first place (see the comment at the top that has 80+ up votes).
again, it's ridiculous to say that I'm offering zilch.

I don't think going around finding "who to blame" is the answer.
something about it. A lot of those ways involve NGOs working in Thailand, which, as I said in an above post, I
did for a year. I've also volunteered informally with one other such NGO, and have friends who work in a
number of others. Some of those NGOs:
* Provide incentives for families to keep their girls in school in the villages, keeping them from being sold and
getting them an education that will give them a different choice for a livelihood.
* Educate families and girls so that they know the truth of the lying "agents" who scour the countryside for
vulnerable families and make false claims about what the jobs they're offering entail.
* Pressure the government to actually enforce its own existing laws regarding prostitution
* Educate/pressure foreign groups and individuals to stop coming in and funding the practice
* Help to rescue girls and women in abusive/illegal situations
* Provide employment and community support options for women who want to leave the life but don't know
how to support themselves otherwise

It's only because of money that they are doing this. It's the exchange rate that causes it to be more severe. This is the ugly side of
capitalism. It's always the lessor of two evils with capitalism. Now just imagine if you were born into that life. Not so nice now is it? Not
so easily dismissed is it.
Let me bend you over for $30 , see how you like it.

is cnn promoting prostitution by this article? Why does cnn talk about red light districts only that too after lifting of curfew
many other places in thailand to see?
Fact of the matter is cnn is giving a stereotype by painting thailand as land of prostitution. CNN is truly shameless gutter media.

This is first of all a brazen Ad for the Bangkok Sex Tourism Industry. Masquerading as an Article. The Writer calls this scummy lowlife
abuse of the dispossessed poor 'sophisticated'. Ready to wretch at this torture and twisting of this word to make it mean something it
doesn't. Using 'sophisticated' while at the same time talking about 'seedier'? Doesn't work.
No! The Johnson Family is into degeneracy and debauchery. Short and simple. Made to look so cute.
But the human toll behind the scenes is heartbreaking. The Travel Ad, in all fairness, to its credit, does end on the work of NightLight
International. And there's my Truth on this subject. Annie Dieselberg and you abhi099

As a foreigner living in Bangkok, I find this story really ignorant and objectionable. It just perpetuates the 1970s view of Bangkok as a place
for sex and sin, when the city has in fact moved on to become far more sophisticated and upscale.
A large part of the tourist industry in Thailand is no longer interested in having these places around, because it just attracts low-life types with
little money. Thailand does far better luring wealthy tourists to its upscale resorts or from the large medical tourism industry. American tourists
spend more money in Thailand buying hip replacements and teeth veneers or staying at five-star resorts than does this bunch of losers.
I hope one day the US media sees Thailand through a 2014 perspective, instead of seeking out that bit of the 1970s and 1980s that is
increasingly out of sync with what this country is about.
