Apply Constraints
Solution > define loads > apply
Thermal > temperature > on lines
A picking menu appears. Highlight the two vertical lines (the 20 m lines ), which have a
temperature of 100 C , then click on ok in the picking menu. The box on the next page
appears. Highlight TEMP for DOFs to be constrained and enter 100 .
Repeat the above process to apply the 100 C temperature to the bottom horizontal line but in
this case , choose YES for apply TEMP to end points ? repeat the process once more , to
apply the 200 C temperature to the top horizontal line , but in this case choose NO for
apply TEMP to end points ?
Solution > define loads > apply > thermal > temperature > key points
Fill the window in as shown to constrain the key points to a constant temperature of 150.

Element Type :
Element type > add / edit / delete > click add > Thermal mass solid , quad 4 node 55
Material Properties :
Material properties > material model > thermal > conductivity > isotropic > KXX
25
Modelling The Structure :
Pre processor > modelling > create > key points > in active CS
Fill in the field as shown at the top of the next page , then click APPLY when you click
on PPLY the command is issued to create key point number 1 at ( X , Y , Z ) = ( 0.005
,0.003 ,0) now that when the Z field is left blank , in this case the blank space default to zero ,
which is desired. Since you clicked on apply , instead of OK , then the key point
creation box remains open.
Create key point number 2 at ( X,Y,Z ) = ( 0.005 , 0.003 , 0 ). After entering the input
again click on APPLY.
Create 6 total key points in the same manner
Keypoint Number X-location Y-location
1 -0.005 0.003
2 0 0.003
3 0 0.001
4 -0.003 0.001
6

5 -0.003 0
6 -0.005 0

5. Create an area through key points :
This is a situation in which it is probably easiest to just enter the area creation
command at the command line. As shown below, enter the command: a,1,2,3,4,5,6
After typing in the command, hit Enter. A schematic (not to scale) of the area,
showing the corner keypoints, is also shown at the top of the next page.
Meshing :
Pre processor > meshing > size control >lines >picked lines
The picking menu (below left) appears. On the graphics window, click on the top
horizontal line (this is one with end key points 1 and 2), to highlight it. Then, click OK
in the picking menu. Then, the Element Size menu (below right) appears. Enter 5
for NDIV, as shown, then click OK
Now, repeat the above process to specify
2 divisions along the vertical line with end key points 2 and 3.
3 divisions along the horizontal line with end key points 3 and 4.
1 division along the vertical line with end key points 4 and 5.
2 divisions along the horizontal line with end key points 5 and 6.
3 divisions along the vertical line with end key points 6 and 1.
If you make a mistake on a particular line, just re-specify the divisions for a particular
line.
Pre processor > meshing > mesh > areas > free > pick all

BOUINDARY CONDITIONS ON CONSTRAINTS :
Solution > define loads > apply
Thermal > convection > on lines
7

A picking menu appears. Highlight the top horizontal line (with end key points 1
and 2), then click on OK in the picking menu. The box on the next page appears.
Enter 1000 for Film Coefficient and 1700 for Bulk temperature, as shown, and
click on OK. Repeat the process to apply the 200 W/(m2-K) film coefficient and the
400 K bulk temperature to the horizontal line, with end key points 3 and 4, and also to the
vertical line with end key points 4 and 5
Solution :

CONVECTION HEAT TRANSFER ANALYSIS - INTERNAL FLOW
AIM :
To plot the velocity distribution of the flow of air over an infinite cylinder.
Problem Description : Dimensions :
1) The cylinder is 0.25 m in diameter
2) Because of symmetry , the problem is simplified so that only half of the cylinder is
computed. The results are assumed to be the same on the other side of the X axis ( axis of
symmetry )
3) The flow area is 2 m by 0.5 m this arbitrary size serves to step up the boundary
conditions of flow over a cylinder .
4) The velocity of the air at infinite distance from the plate is 5 mm/s ( 0.005 m/s )
Figure :

14

PROCEDURE :
STARTING ANSYS :
Click on ANSYS 10.1 in the programs menu
PREFERENCES :
ANSYS main menu > preference > thermal > ok
PREPROCESSOR :
1) Pre processor > element type > add / edit / delete etc., In the element types
windows that opens click on Add the following window opens.
2) Click on Flotran CFD and select 2D flotran 141. Click ok. Close the element types
window.
MODELLING THE STRUCTURE :
1) Pre processor > modelling > create > areas > rectangle > by 2 corners. The width
is 2 and the height is 0.5. the starting position is at ( 0,0 )
2) Pre processor > modelling > create > areas > circle > solid circle. The radius is
0.125 and the centre is at ( 0.5,0.25 ).
3) To subtract the circular area from the rectangle click. Pre processor > modelling >
operating > Booleans . subtract > area. Select the rectangle and click ok. Next select the circle
and click ok. You will be left with this area.
MESHING :
Dividing The Channels Into Elements :
1) Pre processor > meshing > size control > manual size > lines > picked lines click
pick all or manually pick all the lines.
2) In the window that comes up types 0.02 in the element edge length box : now go
to the pre-processor > meshing > mesh > areas > free. Click the area and the ok.

15

FLUID PROPERTIES ( AIR ) :
1) Pre processor > flotran setup > fluid properties.
2) On the box , shown below , set the first two input field to air SI. Then click on
ok.
BOUNDARY CONDITIONS AND CONSTRAINTS :
1) To make loading easier, go to plot > lines on the main file menu.
2) Go to the pre-processor > loads > define loads > apply > fluid CFD > velocity > on
lines. Pick the left and top edge of the rectangle and click ok. Enter 0.005 in the VX field and
0 in the VY. Leave VZ blank then click ok.
This number corresponds to the velocity of 0.005 m/s of air flowing from the left side.
3) To account for symmetry, the normal component to the axis of symmetry is set
zero. To set this go to pre-processor > loads > define loads > apply > fluid CFD > velocity >
on lines. And select the bottom line of the rectangle. Enter 0 in the VY field. Leave VX and
VZ blank.
4) Repeat the above and set the velocity to zero for the 2 lines that up the half circle
(VX = VY = 0, VZ can be left blank ). This is due to the no-slip condition along the cylinder.
5) The last step is to apply atmospheric pressure to the outlet of the fluid region. Go to
pre-processor > loads > define loads > apply > fluid CFD > pressure DOF > on lines and
select the right most vertical line and click ok. In the window that appear , enter 0 for the
constant pressure value and click ok.
SOLUTION:
1) Solution > flotran setup > execution control. The following window appears.
Change the first input field value to 1000, as shown. No other changes are needed. Click ok.
2) Solution > Run FLOTRAN.
3) Wait for ANSYS to solve the problem.

16

POST-PROCESSING :
1) Plotting the velocity distribution
2) Go to general post processing > read results > last set.
3) Then go to general post processing > plot result > contour plot > nodal solution ,
select VSUM and click ok.

4) Now go to general post processing > plot results > vector plot > pre defined and select
