INDUCTION AND ORIENTATION FOR STAFF PROCEDURES

PURPOSE

CQUniversity recognises that its future success continues to depend upon the capacities of our staff and, as one
component of capacity building, is committed to all new staff participating in a comprehensive induction and
orientation program. CQUniversitys induction and orientation processes will provide the information, guidance
and support required for staff to undertake their organisational responsibilities and to develop and succeed in
their new role. This will be achieved by familiarising new staff with the Universitys significant policies, systems
and procedures, governance structure, the work location (campus), and encouraging commitment to the vision,
mission and values of the University.

PROCEDURES

1 Induction Procedures

New staff and their supervisors can access information on current induction processes and organisational
information on the People and Culture Directorate website. It is the responsibility of supervisors to ensure that all
new staff complete the CQUniversity Induction Program and for academic staff, the Foundations of University
Learning and Teaching (FoULT) Program hosted by the Office of Learning and Teaching.

2 Orientation Procedures

Orientation programs are developed and maintained within the individual work units, directorates or faculties in
consultation with the relevant campus and responsibility for this process rests primarily with the staff member's
supervisor. CQUniversity actively encourages a structured orientation process to help new staff settle into
University life. As part of a staff member's orientation, it is recommended that a comprehensive orientation to
the University and the work unit is conducted using the Induction and Orientation for Staff information and tools
available on the People and Culture Directorate website.

Records of participation in orientation processes should be scanned and sent to the People and Culture
Directorate via email as detailed in the New Staff Orientation Checklist, no later than six months after the
commencement date.

3 Academic Teaching Induction

It is mandatory for new academic staff to attend the Foundations of University Learning and Teaching (FoULT)
Program hosted by the Office of Learning and Teaching. The Program provides information on policies and
procedures related to learning and teaching, e-learning, curriculum design, the development and delivery of
flexible learning materials and information on CQUniversity students.

Records of attendance at the Foundations of University Learning and Teaching sessions provided for academic
staff, will be maintained by the Office of Learning and Teaching.

For fixed-term academic staff appointed for less than twelve months and casual academic staff, there are
resources available on the Learning and Teaching website. The supervisor of the work unit may determine that
these staff are required to undertake mandatory sessions on learning and teaching depending on work unit
requirements.

DEFINITIONS

Induction refers to a formal process, provided by the People and Culture Directorate that is conducted university-
wide, which a staff member undertakes upon commencement of employment.

Orientation refers to the informal workplace introduction and familiarisation conducted by the individual work
unit. Orientation includes, but is not limited to, introducing new staff to relevant people within the organisation
and to assist the new staff member to become comfortable and capable in their role.

RESPONSIBILITIES

These procedures apply to all new staff, existing staff appointed to new work locations, and fixed-term and casual
staff at CQUniversity.

New staff will be provided with a centrally organised online induction session and new and existing staff
commencing a role in another part of the organisation will be provided access to an online induction, in addition
to their local work area orientation. Orientation may vary according to type and duration of employment. In
addition, new academic staff who have teaching responsibilities are required to undertake the Foundations of
University Learning and Teaching (FoULT) program.

The People and Culture Directorate will maintain responsibility for providing the following mandatory Induction
components for all staff:
CQUniversity Induction and Welcome;
Health and Safety Induction and Fire Evacuation Plan (FEP);
Equity Induction;
Employee Self Service Online (ESSO) Introduction; and
General Supervisor (New Staff) Checklists.

It is a legislative requirement that the FEP component is completed by all staff regardless of tenure within 48
hours of commencing employment or relocating to another work location.

It is the responsibility of each faculty and division/directorate, in consultation with the relevant campus, to
develop, conduct, maintain area-specific orientation programs for staff within their areas.

The Office of Learning and Teaching (OLT) has responsibility for providing the Foundations of University Learning
and Teaching (FoULT) program, which is the mandatory induction program designed specifically for new academic
staff. It is optionally available to existing staff who teach or support the teaching processes. Casual academic staff
are provided with an opportunity to participate in a modified induction program as identified by the supervisor of
that work area. The Office of Research has responsibility for providing researchers with additional induction
information.

RECORDS

All records relevant to these procedures are to be maintained in a recognised University recordkeeping system.
