Parakl esi s
A Paraklesis is a Service of Supplication specifically for the living the Church Militant -
as opposed to a Memorial Service, which is the Supplication Service for the
reposed souls the Church Triumphant.
This beautiful Holy Service is most often addressed to our Ever Blessed, All Holy Lady,
The Ever Virgin Mary and Theotokos (Mother of God).
However, the Paraklesis Service is also applicable for beseeching the Intercessory
Prayers of any Holy Saint.
The distinguishing feature of a Paraklesis is the inclusion of a Supplicatory Canon to
the Saint whose Intercessory Prayers to God are sought.
A Paraklesis can be served as a stand-alone Service or, in a slightly abbreviated form,
in conjunction with the Holy Vespers Service.
At any time of need, threat or danger no matter whether Spiritual or physical - we
may offer a Paraklesis Service since we always need the Intercessory Prayers of
our Holy Mother, Theotokos, and all the Saints, who are certainly much closer to
God than us who are still struggling through our lifetime.
In Slavic Practice, there is a similar Service a Molieben - which is either served as a
stand alone Service or in conjunction with the Divine Liturgy.
During the Dormition Fast, which is from 1 August until 14 August, we chant the Great
and Small Paraklesis (alternately) each evening, with the exception of Saturday
evening and the Eve or Forefeast of Christs Transfiguration on 5 August and the
Forefeast of the Dormition of the Ever Blessed Theotokos on 14 August.
The Small Paraklesis or Supplicatory Canon to the Most Holy Theotokos was
composed by Theosteriktos the Monk in the 9
th
Century, while the Great Paraklesis
or Suppllicatory Canon to our Beloved Lady Theotokos was composed by
Emperor Theodore I - Dukas Laskaris - in the 13
th
Century.
The cycle of the Dormition Parakleses is determined by two Rules:
1. the cycle begins with the Small Supplicatory Canon whenever 1 August
falls on Monday to Friday
2. on Sunday evening, the Great Supplicatory Canon is always served.
Outside the Dormition Fast, the Small Supplicatory Canon, directed to the Ever
Blessed Theotokos, is always chanted.

Do not enter into Judgement with Thy
servant, for in Thy Sight no one
living is Justified.
For the enemy has persecuted my soul;
he has crushed my life to the
ground; he has made me dwell in
darkness, like those who have long
been dead, and my spirit is
overwhelmed within me; my heart
within me is distressed.
I remembered the days of old; I
meditated on all Thy Works; I
pondered on the work of Thy Hands.
I stretched out my hands to Thee. My
soul longs for Thee, like a thirsty
land.
Hear me quickly, O Lord; my spirit
fails.
Do not turn Thy Sight away from me,
lest I be like those who go down into
the pit.
Cause me to hear Thy Mercy in the
morning, for in Thee I have put my
trust.
Cause me to know, O Lord, the way in
which I should walk, for I lift up my
soul to Thee.
Rescue me, Lord, from my enemies; to
Thee have I fled for refuge.
Teach me to do Thy Will, for Thou art
my God.

Have Mercy on me, O God, according
to Thy Great Mercy.
And according to the abundance of
Thy Compassion, blot out my
transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my
lawlessness, and Cleanse me of my
sin.
For I know my lawlessness, and my
sin is always before me.
Against Thee only have I sinned and
done evil in Thy Sight that Thou
may be Justified in Thy Words, and
overcome when Thou art Judged.
Behold, I was conceived in
transgressions, and in sins my
mother bore me.
Behold, Thou Love Truth Thou
showed me the unknown and
secret things of Thy Wisdom.
Thou shall sprinkle me with hyssop,
and I will be Cleansed.
Thou shall wash me, and I will be
made whiter than snow.
Thou shall make me hear Joy and
Gladness my bones that were
humbled shall greatly Rejoice.
Turn Thy Sight from my sins, and
blot out all my transgressions.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and Renew a right spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from Thy
Presence, and taken not Thy Holy
Spirit from me.

O Protection of Christians who cannot
be put to shame, Thou art the Most
Constant Mediator to the Creator. O
despise not the suppliant voices of
those who have sinned; but be quick,
O Good One, to come to our aid, who
in Faith cry to Thee: Hasten to
Intercession, and speedily make
Supplication, Thou who always
protects, O Theotokos, those who
honour Thee.
