1. Introduction
1.1 Purpose
This documentation will describe in detail the 3G site engineering solution from the existing ZTE 2G
BTS to the 2/3G BTS/NodeB .
This document is only valid together with all approved product manuals and engineering handbooks.
Its purpose is to show a small variety of BTS upgrade solution in detail and to serve as quick reference
for quality checks.
1.2 Scope
This documentation is customized for the Telenor Pakistan 3G project and based on 2G swap
solution.

2. General Introduction of the BTS Upgrade
Solution
For 3G sites, we just need to add BPK board (baseband board) in the existing 2G BBU and 3G
RRUs/RSUs for the RF part.
New RRU will be cascaded to existing RRU for saving FS board.
BPK board slot guideline
For the sites are using BS8700, BPK board will be normally configured at BBU slot 6.
If there are 3 UBPG already configured, BPK will be configured at slot 5.
If SE board is configured at slot 5, during upgrade, the 3
rd
UBPG will be moved to slot 4, then BPK
could be plugged at slot 6.

For the sites are using BS8900A, BPK board will normally be configured at BBU slot 6.
If there are 3 UBPG already configured, BPK will be configured at slot5.
If SE board is configured at slot 5, 3G will not be upgraded until original rectifier cabinet is swapped by
W301 rectifier, so that the 8 external alarms can be provided by W301, then BPK could take slot 5
instead of SE board.

BPK board will be prior plugged in BBU slot 6.

3. RF System upgrade Solution

There are 11 RF system scenarios during the 2G Site Swap:
Single Band
900M
S1~S3 MBR
S4 R8860E/R8881
1800M
S1~S4 R8860E/R8881
S5~S6 R8882
S7~S8 R8860E/R8881+R8860E/R8881
S9~S12 R8882+R8882
Dual Band
900M 1800M Configuration
S1~3 S1~S3 MBR
S1~3 S4 R8860E/R8881 (900M)+R8860E/R8881 (1800M)
S4 S1~S4 R8860E/R8881 (900M)+R8860E/R8881 (1800M)
S1~4 S5~S6 R8860E/R8881 (900M)+R8882(1800M)
S1~4 S7~S10
R8860E/R8881
(900M)+R8882(1800M)+R8860E/R8881 (1800M)

MBR is the Dual band R8882 which can work at both 900M and 1800M.
For 3G RRU, only 2100M R8881 will be used. And which could be only cascaded with R8860E and
R8881.

FS-RSU/RRU Relations Guideline
In addition to RSU layout principles and connections between FS and RSU/RRU, the port
connections between antennas and RSU/RRU should also be considered (such as the case of one
RSU supporting one or two cells or two RSUs supporting one cell).
a) RSU layout principles:
3G RSU
The RSUs are placed into the cabinet from left to right (No slot leaves empty) in the following
order:
3 empty RSU slots in the existing RC cabinet, 3G RSU will be installed in these slots by
the order 4,5,6.
No available slot for 3G RSU in the existing RC cabinet, a new RC cabinet will be added.
b) The connections between FS and RSU/RRU should comply with the following rules:

Fiber or SFP Cable connections between FS and RRU/RSU
In case of using one FS card: The FS card is placed at slot3 of BBU. The ports of FS card are
numbered from 0 to 5 (from right to left). The RSU/RRU units are connected to the FS ports in
the following order from port No. 0 to port No. 5 (No port leaves empty):
GSM 900 RSU/RRU in order of cells (lower at first) takes 0, 1, and 2
DCS1800 RSU/RRU in order of cells (lower at first) takes 3, 4, and 5
If there is no DCS1800M, UMTS 2100M will take FS 3,4,and 5.
Otherwise, UMTS 2100 RRU will be cascaded with R8860E/R8881.
For RSU, a new FS board will be configured.

23
4. Antenna solution
1. TP Sharing sites.
For these sites, space on the tower is not available for installing the RRU and new antenna. In this case,
A new RRU pole will be added on the ground, all the single/dual band antennas will be changed to
Tri-band antennas.

2. TP Build sites.
For these sites, a new 2100M single band antenna will be added for each sector.
a. Sufficient space on the tower, the 2100M antenna will be installed above 1800M antenna.

b. Insufficient space on the tower, a diversity pole will be installed with 1800M antenna pole. 2100M
antenna will be installed beside 1800M antenna.

24

5. Power Supply Solution
For 2G power supply, there are 2 scenarios as below:
Scenario1
For the Non EOL site, There is at least one breaker available on the original rectifier for
BBU power supply(10A). All 8 output port can be used for 8 RRUs.

For the Non EOL site, there is no breaker available for the BBU power supply, The first
port of DCPD4 will be used for BBU power supply, second port will be the backup for
BBU, third port to eighth port used for RRU.

Scenario2
For the EOL site, 7 ports in LVLD can be used for RRU power supply.

For distributed sites(BS 8700), A DCPD4 module will be configured
for 3G RRU power supply

RAN_ENG_3G Site Engineering solution (for the whole network) _V1.2_20140110

25
For the Macro sites(BS 8900A), one 16A breaker will be changed to
a 63A breaker for 3G RC cabinet
