Glucose is vital to your health be- cause its an important source of energy for the cells that make up your muscles and tssues. It is also your brains main source of fuel. If you have diabetes, no mater what type, it means you have too much glucose in your blood, although the reasons may difer. Too much glucose can lead to serious health problems. Chronic diabetes conditons include type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Potentally reversible diabetes conditons include prediabetes when your blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classifed as diabetes and gestatonal diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy but may re- solve afer the baby is delivered. Detras RN Complicatons Defniton Symptoms In prediabetes which can lead to type 2 diabetes and in type 2 diabetes, your cells become resistant to the acton of insulin, and your pancreas is unable to make enough insulin to overcome this resistance. Instead of Risk Factors for Type 2 Prediabetes Risk factors for diabetes depend on the type of diabetes. Long-term complicatons of diabetes develop grad- ually. The longer you have diabetes and the less controlled your blood sugar the higher the risk of complicatons. Eventually, diabetes complicatons may be disabling or even life-threatening. Possible complicatons include: Preventon Diabetes symptoms vary depending on how much your blood sugar is elevated. Some people, especially those with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, may not experience symptoms initally. In type 1 diabetes, symptoms tend to come on quickly and be more severe. Some of the signs and symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes include: Increased thirst Frequent urinaton Extreme hunger Unexplained weight loss Presence of ketones in the urine (ketones are a byproduct of the breakdown of muscle and fat that happens when theres not enough insulin) Fatgue Blurred vision Slow-healing sores High blood pressure Frequent infectons, such as gums or skin infectons and vaginal or bladder infectons Although type 1 diabetes can develop at any age, it typically appears during childhood or adolescence. Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, can devel- op at any age and is ofen preventable.
