Almex specializes in single screw
extrusion equipment, from the extrusion
unit to complete installations. We are a
family owned, independent company.
Almex extruders and Contivar
Expanders are in use worldwide at
fishfeed-, oil extraction-, petfood-,animal
feed plants, the food industry and the
processing and chemical industries.
Almex started early 1970s with repair
and installation of extruders.
For use in Europe these units needed
much modifications, so we decided to
design and built in the Netherlands a
complete range of extruders for 500 to
15.000 kg/hour capacity. These extruders
did find their way to clients worldwide.
Today the largest extruder has a
diameter of 400 mm, a barrel length of
4800 mm and a drive of 500 kW.
The same quality extruder parts are used
to manufacture Contivar Expanders
for the feed industry, as a popluar
machine to improve feed quality.
The robust, basically simple design of the
Almex equipment guarantees years of
trouble free service. Almex was the first
company using DC drives on single
screw extruders in order to select the
extrusion shaft speed to match the
product and selected die specifications.
Using DC drives the extruder becomes a
tool that can be precisely tuned in order
to assure quality of the product.

The EC funded SARNISSA project began
with addressing a key constraint holding
back the development ofaquaculture in
Sub Saharan Africa (SSA), ie lack of
access to relevant information and
communication. By May 2012 it had
developed into a unique online based
network of over 2100 individuals joined
together across borders and languages,
sharing information, contacts, and more
towards increasing SSA aquaculture
production.
SARNISSA has now built up its main
www.sarnissa.orgwebsite into a unique
repository of publications, African Fish
Farms and commercial suppliers,
Research Institutes, Videos, Employment
and funding opportunities, Media news,
and much more. This website allied to
two (English and French) African
aquaculture email fora soon began to see
increasing numbers joining the
discussions and information exchange
allowing SARNISSA to identify key
individuals with promise whom they
could interact with in three main ways:
Firstly a portfolio of user friendly case
studies highlighting the successes and
failures of African aquaculture
development were developed by
working with identified members as co
authors. These were often younger, up
and coming researchers who for many it
was their first experience of publishing.
By May 2011, 35 Case studies were
available through SARNISSA to
thousands across the continent and
internationally.
Secondly SARNISSA developed research
and other collaborations with key
stakeholders these again identified
through fora information exchange. In
three years SARNISSA had helped to set
up a number of research, and other
collaborations including
Macrobrachium culture in Cameroon,
Aquashops in Kenya, Africas first
Commercial Aquaculture Symposium in
Gabon, and another project PROINSECT
in Ghana. Through advertising
European, Turkish and Asian companies
also obtained contracts for equipment
and service supply.
Thirdly SARNISSA worked at Policy level,
with policy members interacting
regularly often for the first time, through
a series of online fora, attendance at
policy level meetings and then
formulation of bilingual Policy briefs
disseminated widely throughout the
network.
SARNISSA also developed its online
coverage through free access to the CABI
online Aquaculture Compendium. It also
carried out an Asian study tour where
the three African partners travelled for
one month to view aquaculture in
Thailand, Bangladesh and Nepal.
SARNISSA also set up and developed a
Facebook site which opened up
SARNISSA to a different often younger
based audience and also a SARNISSA
Twitter feed gave access to the
increasing number of mobile phone
users across Africa.
By the end of the projects EC funding
SARNISSA had really developed from a
small online network into a continent
wide/international Community of
Practice of registered members (over
2100 by May 2012) which has allowed it
to continue growing even after project
funding finished. Impacts from
SARNISSA can be clearly seen and
measured. In future, different
organisational structures are being
examinedin terms of moving towards a
more self-sustaining income generating
organisation with commercial
sponsorships and online advertising.
Time will tell the road SARNISSA takes
however from humble beginnings it has
in three years become a major network
benefitting and bringing together
thousands of African and other
individuals across a range of disciplines
and sectors in the growing African
aquaculture sector.

purpose built exhibition halls of the
Bangkok International Trade and
Exhibition Centre or BITEC, Bangkok
from the 8 10 April 2014.
FIAAP Asia 2014 is the only specialist
exhibition and conference for the
ingredients, additives and formulation
of feeds for animals, aquafeed and dry
petfood within the expanding
Asia/Pacific markets.
VICTAM Asia 2014 is by far the largest
exhibition in Southeast Asia for animal
feed production technology. This
equipment, technology, together with
ancillary systems is required and is
essential for the safe and effective
production of feeds for animals,
aquafeed and dry petfood.
The sector of biomass pellet production
machinery within the exhibition has
grown larger over the last few years.
This sector is becoming increasingly
popular and important as biomass
pellets are seen as an alternative green
energy source in the power generation
industry both in Asia/Pacific and also
elsewhere in the world.
Asias largest feed & rice milling shows to
focus on production savings
GRAPAS Asia is the only trade show in
the Asia/Pacific region for the grain
processing sectors. The show profiles
rice & flour milling, grain processing,
storage, preservation & distribution,
industrial noodle & pasta production, the
manufacture of breakfast cereals and
extruded snacks. This exhibition has
seen dramatic growth over the last few
years as eating habits start to change
throughout South and Southeast Asia.
As the production process within mills
becomes more sophisticated so the
opportunities for cost savings increase.
New technology means that differing
basic commodities can be used within
feed formulations, so enabling the
formulator to utilise basic and specialist
ingredients and additives that he just
could not have used a number of years
ago. All the time these ingredients are
being introduced to the market and will
be found in the FIAAP stands at the
event.
But it is perhaps in the actual production
line itself that the greatest savings can be
found and realised. The two biggest
problems for a mill owner/manager are
increasing energy costs and production
time lost through changing the line or
dies and/or faulty equipment.
Many of the international technology
suppliers have or are introducing
equipment that is more energy efficient.
These systems may initially be more
expensive than another brand but when
one makes a simple comparison of the
reduced power consumption over a
number of years it can normally be
shown to be cost effective within a few
years, and this is without taking into
account the probable increased
efficiency of the machine itself.
Some millers even produce their own
biomass pellets in order to use within
small power generating plants to
supplement their own electricity supply.
New and improved technology and
automation can, besides being energy
efficient, can also bring greater
efficiency within the production
processes, as well as also improving the
end product, be it mash or pellet. If you
have an improved, cheaper and safer
end product you will have the edge over
your competitor which should improve
your turnover and eventually your profit
ratio.

similar emphasis on cost savings and
efficiency. However it will also cover
storage, transportation of rice and
grains or to put it more simply post-
harvest production.
Too much product is lost during this
time. Rice/grains can be damaged during
transportation. Storage is another
problem, the temperature should be
correct and constant, the same with the
amount of humidity, etc. too dry and the
grains are damaged and too damp they
rot. Infestation of rodents and insects,
especially weevils are a big problem,
here again mill owners and processors
should find answers to their problems.

Major new events for 2014 The ASEAN
Feed & Rice Symposium
The first ASEAN FEED & RICE
SYMPOSIUM will be held on Wednesday
9th April 2014 during the FIAAP, VICTAM
& GRAPAS Asia shows at BITEC in
Bangkok.
Senior members of the ASIAN
DEVELOPMENT BANK, the ASEAN
Community Secretariat and the FAO will
address an audience which will
comprise VIPs, invited Presidents and
Secretary Generals of the ASEAN Feed &
Rice Associations together with their
members and registered visitors to the
shows. The purpose of this first ever
Symposium is to inform this select
audience of the trading and financial
impact of the ASEAN Free Trade Zone
when it comes into force. The
Symposium is open to ALL registered
visitors and is free of charge.
ASEAN Rice Summit
The first ASEAN RICE SUMMIT will
convene at BITEC on the 10th April,
during the exhibitions. Respected
speakers from within the rice industry
and commerce will present papers
discussing the future trends in rice, in
terms of projected production,
consumption, security and eating habits
within the ASEAN Free Trade Zone.
There will also be further papers
featuring the very important subject of
improvements for post-harvest
production.
The ASEAN Rice Summit is open to ALL
registered visitors and is free of charge.

Victam to celebrate its 50th Anniversary
during the 2015 shows in cologne.
2015 will be the 50th anniversary of the
first VICTAM exhibition. The first
VICTAM exhibition was held from 26 to
29 May 1965 in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
The show was about 4,000 sqm net, and
there were 64 exhibitors, these include
some well-known industry names: Van
Aarsen, Ottevanger, Wijnveen, Neuero,
Poeth, Welgro, Amandus Kahl,
Dinnissen, Molenschot (now Precia
Molen), Heesen (now Andritz), Simon
Europe (now also Andritz).
It is good to see so many of these are still
current exhibitors at our shows.
Since these early days the exhibition has
changed as has the industry. The
introduction of new technology and
modernisation has meant fewer but
more efficient mills but with greatly
reduced workforces. Many famous
names have gone or been integrated into
new larger companies. The same is also
true of the companies who provide the
modern technology and ingredients.
And with it Victam too has changed. For
the better we hope.
From a small exhibition in Utrecht 1965
purely for the Dutch animal feed
industry it has evolved into what is now
the worlds largest and most prestigious
event for the multi $billion international
animal feed, grain processing, milling
and biomass pelleting industries.
The event in Cologne, from 9 11 June,
2015, will not only be a VICTAM
exhibition as it will be co-located with
sister shows FIAAP International
(animal feed ingredients and additives)
and GRAPAS International (grain
processing and flour milling).
Even Victam International is not quite
the same as it used to be a show mainly
for animal feed processing technology.
The show now also profiles, like many of
its exhibitors, biomass pelleting
technology.
The 50th Anniversary shows are not all
that is happening to celebrate this
milestone. There will be other surprise
events that will ensure that VICTAM
International 2015, together with FIAAP
International 2015 and GRAPAS
International 2015 should not be missed.

Can you tell us about the history of
Offshore Mariculture?
Offshore Mariculture isan international
two-day conference on the offshore fish
framing business that is followed, on the
third day with a technical visit to a fish
farm. It aims to assist those farmers who
are either growing their offshore fish
farming businesses or who are looking to
move their business offshore and, as
such, explores the progress and
prospects for offshore aquaculture in
European and international waters.
Following four successful previous
events - Malta 2006, Alicante 2008 and
Dubrovnik, Croatia 2010, Turkey 2012 -
the 5th Offshore Mariculture Conference
will be held in Naples, Italy on 9-11 April
2014.

By moving farms into cleaner, deeper waters, conflict between the offshore aquaculture industry and coastal users will be
reduced and it will also provide a much better environment for aquaculture operations to exist. The aquaculture industry
needs to keep growing globally and aquaculture remains the fastest-growing animal-food-producing sector, now
accounting for around half of all fish consumed today. The offshore Mariculture Conference will examine the progress and
prospects for farming offshore covering everything from the latest legislation, investment and financial issues, managing,
marketing and the day to day running of an offshore business to the latest technical advances that will help to make the
life of the marine aquaculturist easier.

Who is the event aimed at?
Farming companies, research
organisations and suppliers looking to
update themselves on the latest policies,
products, research and case studies within
the fin/shell fish and seaweed offshore
farming industries will all be in attendance.
In addition investment companies and
entrepreneurs looking to enter/invest in the
region-specific market will also attend.
Brief outline of 2012 conference
Hosted by the Turkish of Food
Agriculture and Livestock, attendees at
the 2012 Conference included both
experienced and aspiring investors and
entrepreneurs; fish farm owners,
managers and operators; makers and
distributors of net pens and mesh
materials; feedstuff suppliers and feed
manufacturers; and researchers into
new species, new farm technologies,
genetics, and fish health. Over 25
nationalities were represented at the
Conference, including attendees from
Chile, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Oman,
Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Norway,
UK, USA, Australia, Israel and the
Lebanon. Chaired by Neil Anthony
APR
Sims, of Kampachi Farms, LLC , the
Conference heard Keynote presentations
from Alessandro Lovatelli, FAO
Aquaculture Officer; Paul Holthus of
World Ocean Council; and Harald
Rosenthal who had Chaired the
Bremerhaven Conference on the future
of Open Ocean Aquaculture
development in 2010.
Other presentations explored a range of
planning and management tools that are
being set up around the world to better
integrate aquaculture into coastal
planning initiatives. New species
development, provision of seed (fish
fingerlings or bivalve spat) and feed
developments for offshore mariculture
were also reviewed.

On the second day of the Conference, a
number of presentations highlighted
engineering improvements to offshore
net pen systems, with input on new mesh
sizes, along with data demonstrating the
antifouling properties of brass alloy
meshes. The day also included reviews of
new developments in single-point
mooring systems for self-submerging
surface pens and for shrimp culture in
Aquapods, tension leg cages and testing
of more robust surface pens and
unanchored drifter cages. On the final

What are the most important issues in
the Aquaculture Industry at the
moment?
For the offshore sector: Investment,
onshore integration with other coastal
users, cage technology to cope with
exposed sites, production costs.
first-hand look at the booming Turkish
aquaculture industry, as they were
hosted on a tour of fish processing
facilities; a boat trip out to exposed farm
sites for seabass, seabream and tuna; and
a walk-through of marine fish hatchery
facilities in the Izmir area.
A Statement requesting that United
Nations FAO conduct an assessment of
the access and operational frameworks
for open ocean mariculture in the High
Seas, and make recommendations as to
how to better encourage work towards
mariculture in waters beyond any one
nations EEZs, was also drafted at the
Conference which the Turkish
government offered to formally convey
to FAO.
Whats new for this years event?
As well as tracking the progress of
species and technologies for farming in
exposed sites, this years programme will
also focus heavily on investment as
without this the sector will not see the
growth needed to ensure the levels of
production needed to feed the world.
Future Fish Eurasia, the 7th
International Fair for Fish
Imports/Exports, Processing,
Aquaculture and Fisheries will be
organised by Eurasia Trade Fairs at the
Izmir International Fair Centre between
05 07 June 2014.
Future Fish Eurasia 2014 will be
organised in a hall of 11.000m, where
over 300 local & international companies
will display their products and services.
The concept is a combination of fish
products, aquaculture and fish
processing equipment.

90.000tons of Seabass/Seabream and

A good percentage of the seabass/
seabream production is exported fresh
and/or processed throughout the world
whereas rainbow trout is exported
mainly to Europe as a hot smoked
vacuum packed product. Statistics show
that Turkish aquaculture & fisheries
exported 1 billion 418 million USD of
product in 2011. Export figures in 2012
rose by 17%, reaching 1 billion 664
million USD.
