Seminars Announced for First-Time Hunters
VPRs Outdoor Radio Explores The
Nature Of Things In Vermont
How do peepers peep, and how does their
sound compare to standing next to a jet engine?
How many songs can a songbird learn in its life-
time, and which bird can harmonize with itself?
All these questions and more are answered on
Outdoor Radio, a new monthly series on Vermont
Public Radio, produced in collaboration with the
Vermont Center for Ecostudies in Norwich.
The program brings listeners into the Vermont
outdoors with rich sound as it delves into the
everyday mysteries of nature. Its hosted by
biologists Kent McFarland and Sara Zahendra,
who share their knowledge, expertise and enthu-
siasm for wildlife education and conservation at
8:50 a.m. on the third Thursday of each month.
All week long I waited for your Outdoor
Radio program on peepers. It was so wonder-
ful! wrote listener Liesl Reichelt of Stowe. I
wait every spring to hear the first peepers, know-
ing at last the long winter is finally over. I finally
know more about these amazing little creatures.
Thank you for a wonderful show.
This partnership with the Vermont Center for
EcoStudies is a new and exciting way to serve
our listeners, said Franny Bastian, director of
programming and production. Outdoor Radio
combines rich sound, a sense of discovery, and
information from local experts that help us better
appreciate and understand our environment.
The Vermont Center for Center for EcoStudies
seeks to guide conversation through science,
inspire ecological responsibility, and foster local
and international collaboration to effect change.
Outdoor Radio is made possible by the VPR
Journalism Fund.
Are you a brand new hunter or archer with no
mentor to guide you in your first hunting experi-
ence? Do you lack the skills to properly field
dress and process your first deer? If so, the
Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department has a solu-
tion for you. The department is holding a series
of free seminars covering the basics to get you
started in hunting.
Starting in mid-August, we are hosting a
series of seminars in different aspects of hunting
to properly equip inexperienced hunters with the
tools to be successful in the Vermont outdoors,
says John Pellegrini, hunter education training
coordinator. Our experienced volunteer instruc-
tors will be teaching courses on archery, water-
fowl, turkey and deer hunting as well as process-
ing, storing and cooking game. You will learn
what to wear on your first hunt and how to select
a firearm or archery equipment.
The seminars are being held in different parts
of the state. With the Vermont deer, turkey and
bear populations in good shape, now is the time
to give hunting a try.
Pellegrini stresses these seminars are for
beginning hunters, not for the hunting veteran.
Weve heard from a number of hunter education
graduates who are new to the sport that they need
additional hands-on experience before going into
the field. These seminars are designed to be the
bridge to successful participation.
A hunting license is not required, and equip-
ment is provided for use during the seminars.
Vermont has more than 70,000 licensed hunt-
ers. Each year they provide a critical service to
the state by helping manage the various game
species in Vermont. Additionally, they provide
more than $268.7 million in revenue to the
states economy, according to a recent national
study. By training the next generation of hunters,
the department ensures this tradition remains
strong in Vermont.
A list of the seminars with descriptions, dates,
locations, and registration information is on
theVermont Fish & Wildlife website: (http://
www.vtfishandwildlife.com/edu_hunt_seminars.
cfm).
For additional information, contact John
Pellegrini at john.pellegrini@state.vt.us, or at
802-272-2909. Register early, as these seminars
will fill up quickly.

At least 37 pairs of peregrine falcons nested in Vermont this year, with at least 27 pairs successfully produc-
ing 50 or more young. VTF&W photo by C.P. Merrill.
Vermont Fish & Wildlife has reopened the
cliffs closed to hiking and access earlier this
spring to protect nesting peregrine falcons.
The young peregrines have fledged, and
nesting data suggest the species had a good year
due, in part, to cooperation from hikers and rock
climbers during this critical nesting period, said
Fish and Wildlifes migratory bird biologist John
Buck. Peregrine nesting success is also helped
by the nearly 40 volunteers who monitor the nest
sites from March to the end of July.
According to Audubon biologist Margaret
Fowle, who coordinates the monitoring effort,
biologists and volunteers monitored 41 pere-
grine pairs that occupied Vermont cliffs in early
spring and summer. Preliminary results indicate
of the 41 pairs, at least 37 pairs nested, and 27
pairs successfully produced an estimated 50
young. Two new nesting sites were discovered
this year suggesting additional falcon pairs are
selecting their territories.
We greatly appreciate the time and effort
volunteers put into monitoring the population
this year, and we thank landowners and recre-
ationists for their cooperation in protecting nest-
ing peregrines from human disturbance, said
Fowle.
We appreciate the cooperation of the trail
and cliff users, added Buck. The success of
the peregrine nesting season reflects that this
mutual effort was very worthwhile.
Vermont Fish & Wildlife and Audubon
Vermont partner to monitor and protect pere-
grine nesting sites in Vermont. Peregrine falcons
were removed from the states Threatened and
Endangered Species List in 2005. Ongoing
cooperation from recreationists and continued
monitoring efforts by Audubon and Fish and
Wildlife will help ensure the peregrines remark-
able recovery in future

The Central Vermont Chapter of Trout Unlimited has joined
forces with The Nature Conservancy and Redstart, Inc., a private
consulting firm, to determine where fish such as brook trout may
have a hard time getting around in the Otter Creek watershed.
Aquatic passage is critical to the health of fish populations, and
we want to identify the problem areas and find solutions, said TU
chapter vice president Grey Hagwood of Georgia. Brook trout
will travel for miles in one season in search of food, mates or
cooler summer waters. But the problem is, they cant always get
where they need to go.
Hagwood and his chapter landed a $2,500 grant from a national
TU program called Embrace-a-Stream to help pay for culvert
assessments in tributaries of Otter Creek this summer.
Combined with other public and private funds, Trout Unlimiteds
contribution will allow researchers to assess and catalog under-
sized and poorly designed culverts.
Were delighted and grateful to be partnering with Trout
Unlimited and our other funders on this important project, said
Heather Furman, The Nature Conservancys Vermont director. The
Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation and the
Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department have pooled funds for this
project with the Vermont Community Foundation, which made a
contribution from its Lake Champlain and Tributaries Restoration
Fund.
A recent Lamoille River Basin assessment is representative of
others conducted by The Conservancy in the Lake Champlain
watershed. The Conservancy assessed culverts capacity to permit
the passage of aquatic organisms and to withstand high-volume
water flows without failing.
Cataloguing and prioritizing the structures is the first step to
solving the aquatic connectivity problem, says Nature
Conservancy conservation biologist Paul Marangelo. In some
towns, we found 60 to 80 percent of culverts evaluated to be par-
tially or completely incompatible with aquatic passage. Out of the
1,160 culverts assessed in the Lamoille River Basin, 440 were
completely incompatible with aquatic organism passage. Most of
those constricted culverts also have a high likelihood of washing
out in major storm events.
Fragmentation of Vermonts waterways means that aquatic eco-
systems are less resilient. Game fishlike brook trout and salm-
onminnows, turtles, salamanders and invertebrates need to
move freely to find food and breed, maintaining genetic diversity.
Fish also need to take refuge from harsh conditions, seeking
warmer waters in winter, and cooler water in summer, a need now
made increasingly dire by climate change.
The earlier Lamoille River basin assessment uncovered signifi-
cant culvert failings: I found some jammed with old bicycles,
dammed with logs, or crushed, while others were disconnected in
the middle, with the water not running all the way through, says
Dan Rudi Ruddell of Redstart, Inc. The Conservancy contracted
with Redstart, Inc., to conduct the fieldwork in the Lamoille
watershed.
The worst barriers are undersized culverts that are elevated
above the downstream water surface. These so-called perched
culverts represent a significant barrier to mobility by requiring
migrating to fish to leap into the opening from the pool below.
When a stream passes through an undersized culvert during
high flows, the water shoots out the downstream end like a fire
hose, scouring a deep pool, and leaving the culvert perched above,
inaccessible to fish, says Vermont DFW fisheries biologist Rich
Kirn. We have undersized perched culverts all over the state.
There has been great cooperation, communication and enthusi-
asm from the state level down to the town level, said Marangelo,
the conservation biologist. By helping fish, we are also helping
our municipalities to prevent costly future flooding.
Members of Trout Unlimited will be helping out with culvert
assessments this summer by calling landowners for permission to
access privately owned culverts and by assisting with culvert mea-
surements needed for the assessments.
The Nature Conservancy has now completed aquatic connectiv-
ity assessments in the Lamoille, Poultney, Mettowee, Missisquoi,
Pike, and Rock River watersheds, with evaluations underway in
the Lewis and Otter Creek watersheds.

Watch Out for Vulnerable Users on the Road
Who are vulnerable users? They may be on
skateboards, scooters, bicycles or on foot, in
wheelchairs or working on the road. They lack
the protection we have inside our cars or trucks,
but deserve to be as safe as we are. Heres how
we can all help:
Drivers
Drive slowly, avoid distractions, and be alert for
anyone standing, walking or biking as you leave
your driveway and on the streets, especially at
intersections and crosswalks, on road shoulders,
around school zones and bus stops, coming out
of driveways or from behind obstructions like
parked cars.
When passing a vulnerable user, slow down and
leave at least 4 feet between you.
When approaching an intersection or cross-
walk, let vulnerable users go first, and always
yield to them wherever they are. Use extra cau-
tion around children, the elderly and blind pedes-
trians.
Never block the crosswalk.
Check side mirrors for bikes before opening
your car door.
Dont honk at bicyclists, and remember that
they have a right to use the travel lane.
Dont stop to pick up hitchhikers on the high-
way or ramps.
Never turn right on red when a red arrow or No
Turn on Red sign is lit.
Bicyclists
Obey the rules of the road, including stop signs,
traffic lights and proper signals before turning.
Ride with traffic, in single file when vehicles
are present and never more than two abreast.
Be predictable, avoid weaving or sudden lane
changes and yield to pedestrians.
Wear a helmet, and use reflectors on your
bike.
Pedestrians
Look both ways, then left again before cross-
ing, and use crosswalks.
Always obey Walk and Dont Walk signals.
When there is no signal, cross with the green
light in your direction, but watch for turning
vehicles.
When there are sidewalks, use them. When you
must walk on the road, stay as far as possible to
the left, facing traffic.
All Vulnerable Users
Try to avoid being out in poor weather condi-
tions.
Pay attention, and avoid headphones, texting
and cell phone calls.
Stay visible by using lights and wearing
light, bright colors or reflective clothing.
Everyone
Share the road with courtesy and respect.

Backcountry Alliance Joins Forces with
Catamount Trail Assoc
Antlerless Deer Permit Application Deadline is Aug. 15
In an ongoing effort to create a unified voice for
Vermonts growing backcountry skiing and rid-
ing community, the recently formed Vermont
Backcountry Alliance (VTBC) has been formally
recognized as an official program area of
Vermonts Catamount Trail Association (CTA).
Its a step that will enable both organizations to
work collaboratively toward the VTBCs prima-
ry areas of focus: mountain lands conservation,
backcountry access, safety, and responsible ter-
rain management.
This is a big step for backcountry skiing and
riding in Vermont, says Brian Mohr, a volunteer
member of the VTBC Working Group, which
helps to guide the VTBCs efforts. Joining
forces with the Catamount Trail Association
pools our communitys resources and gives us
the means to move ahead on a number of excit-
ing projects.
One such project is spearheaded by central
Vermonts Rochester Area Sports Trails Alliance
(RASTA), and includes a proposal with the
Green Mountain National Forest to develop and
maintain a handful of new backcountry skiing
and riding zones on national forest land near
Rochester. The proposal is currently moving
through an approval process, with some work on
the proposed zones commencing as soon as this
fall. RASTA is also moving ahead with a similar
project on a large area of conserved land in
Braintree.
Our hope is that these could be models to
help the VTBC and CTA drive similar projects
around the state, says Angus McCusker, a vol-
unteer with RASTA and member of the VTBC
Working Group. Well need lots of volunteer
and financial support, however, to see these
through.
This summer, RASTA has been recognized as
a pilot CTA chapter, a possible first step toward
the CTA becoming chapter-based organization-
ally similar to how the Green Mountain Club
(GMC) and the Vermont Mountain Bike
Association (VMBA) are organized.
Other projects on the VTBCs radar include
the creation of a new Vermont Backcountry
Ethic, as well as the planning of the 2nd Annual
VT Backcountry Forum on Thursday, Nov. 6th in
Rochester. At the event, results from the recent
Vermont backcountry survey will be presented,
along with an overview of some existing and
proposed projects coordinated by RASTA,
Friends of Bolton, and others. Attendees will be
asked to weigh in on a working draft of the VT
Backcountry Ethic, and participate in a brain-
storming session about the future of Vermonts
backcountry. VTBC is also working closely with
the VT Dept of Forests, Parks and Recreation
(VTFPR) to help update land management strat-
egies to better accommodate backcountry skiing
and snowboarding on Vermont state lands.
Anyone interested in getting involved or sup-
porting the VTBC is encouraged to join or
donate to the CTA, which will be accepting
grants and donations in support of relevant back-
country skiing and riding initiatives in Vermont.

The deadline to apply for a Vermont muzzle-
loader antlerless deer hunting permit is fast
approaching August 15.
Hunters can apply on the Vermont Fish &
Wildlife Departments website (www.vtfishand-
wildlife.com). A quick-link to the information
and application is provided on the home page.
Or, they can apply with a paper application avail-
able from license agents.
The online application is a really swift and
easy process that ensures you are immediately
entered into the lottery, said Deer Project Leader
Adam Murkowski. Plus, it saves you postage.
We encourage you to use the online application
because it is more efficient for you and for us. Be
sure to apply before the August 15 deadline.
Like in the past, a person may apply in the
lottery category, or as a landowner. However, it
is a violation for a landowner to apply for a land-
owner antlerless permit if they are posting their
land against hunting. Fish & Wildlife says it will
be closely monitoring landowner applications
and listing permit winners in both categories on
its website.
The number of December muzzleloader sea-
son antlerless permits is 17,050 distributed in 13
of Vermonts 20 Wildlife Management Units
(WMUs).

Patrick Tibbetts, of Barre, earned his first career Allen Lumber
Street Stock victory during the only feature event to be concluded
before the rains came on Cody Chevrolet-Cadillac night on
Thursday, August 7 at Thunder Road. The Late Model feature with
26 cars saw three laps completed before Phil Scott made hard
contact with the wall and the rain started shortly after, ending the
nights events.
The remainder of the Late Model feature will be made up this
Thursday, August 14 at 6 p.m. before the regularly scheduled
event. The Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen 100-lapper will be run at
6:00 p.m. before the Jet Service Envelope night on Thursday,
August 21.
In the Street Stock 25-lap feature completed before the rain,
Tibbetts held off Kevin Dodge and Kyle Streeter in a fierce battle.
Will Hennequin and Donny Yates completed the top five. Jennifer
Getty, Tommy Smith, Jamie Davis, Bunker Hodgdon and Alan
Maynard all earned top ten finishes.
Thursday, August 14 will kick of with the remainder of the
nights rained-out feature at 6 p.m., before a regular weekly event
for the Late Models, Tigers, Street Stocks and the Rough Riders.
Also the New England Antique Racers will make their annual
visit.

Barres Nick Sweet fresh off a victory in his last race at
Thunder Road became the 7th different American Canadian Tour
winner in as many events of the 2014 season at Beech Ridge
Motor Speedway in Scarborough, ME on Saturday night. Sweet
led for the majority of the event, but the win came with intense
action and multiple lead changes with runner-up finisher Ben
Ashline. Ashline jumped out to the lead after starting on the pole
before outside pole sitter Stephane Descoste slipped to the front
and led through the initial stages of the event until Sweet took over
on the 24th circuit. Sweet made the charge from his 8th place start-
ing position and built a comfortable lead once he reached the
point. Sweets lead rapidly evaporated when the third caution flag
of the event flew on lap 77. Ashline started to Sweets outside on
the ensuing restart and the pair stayed door-to-door for the next 30
laps. The duo swapped the lead multiple times including seven
official lead changes at the start/finish line during that run before
Ashline finally edged by on the outside and Sweet fell in line until
the final caution flag of the event on lap 110. On the ensuing and
final event restart, Sweet used the outside lane to gain the advan-
tage and the front spot for good. He assembled a generous lead
over the final forty laps and claimed his fourth career American
Canadian Tour win. Ashline held on for second, while current
ACT point leader Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. spent the majority of the
race looking for room to get around the front pair, but had to settle
for third. Eddie MacDonald came from the ninth starting spot to
take fourth and Jimmy Hebert claimed fifth. Sweet has already
qualified for the Bond ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor
Speedway on Saturday, September 20 with his VT Governors
Cup win at Thunder Road back in July. His jaunt to Victory Lane
at Beech Ridge adds an extra $500 to his previously $1,000 bonus
for the event.
In a battle between two drivers with everything on the line, AJ
Allmendinger held off Marcos Ambrose in breathtaking fashion to
win Sundays Cheez-It 355 at the Glen and claim an almost certain
spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. In the closing laps,
Allmendinger and Ambrose bumped each other, leaned on each
other, raced each other side-by-side through the esses without
wreckingastoundinglyand swapped the lead before
Allmendinger secured his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series vic-
tory with a pass in Turn 6 with just over one lap left. The 2.45-mile
road course at Watkins Glen International gave both drivers their
best chance to qualify for the Chase, and it was Allmendinger who
prevailed in a two-lap battle that that was a long-time coming,
thanks to three red-flag periods needed to repair safety barriers at
the track. Kurt Busch ran third, hoping during the final two laps
that Ambrose and Allmendinger would take their aggression over
the line and give him a chance to win. Rookie Kyle Larson kept
his Chase hopes alive with a fourth-place run, and Carl Edwards
came home fifth. Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Greg Biffle, Matt
Kenseth and Brian Vickers completed the top 10. Yeah, I mean I
knew our car was slick on restarts on the tires, and I knew Marcos
was going to try to move me out of the way if he had the opportu-
nity, Allmendinger said. To his credit, he didnt wreck me. He
just moved me like he should have. I went down into the next
corner and leaned on him a little bit to see if I could get a gap and
get them racing behind me. I knew if I could just get a three- or
four-car-length gap, they werent going to get back to me. And
then came the win. This is what I live forthis is all I talk
about, Allmendinger said. I dont want to hear that AJ might be
the next first-time winnerIm tired of hearing that. On Sunday,
Allmendinger made sure he wont ever hear those words again.
Recovering from an early spin after contact with Kyle Buschs
Toyota, Marcos Ambrose held off Busch in the closing laps of
Saturdays Zippo 200 at the Glen to win the series-best fifth road
course race of his Nationwide Series career. The Australian driver
has won four consecutive NNS starts at 2.45-mile Watkins Glen
International, having triumphed in three straight from 2008
through 2010 and this year after a three-race hiatus from competi-
tion at the Glen. Though Ambrose knows full well the big prizes
a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory in the Cheez-It 355 at the
Glen and a berth in the Chasewill be contested on Sunday, he
was eager to savor the NNS win. I just want to enjoy today,
Ambrose said. You get to Victory Lane, and its special. I would
love to repeat, but its a lot of work tomorrow. I want to think
about this and get a good nights rest and come attack them tomor-
row. Joey Logano came home third, followed by pole winner
Brad Keselowski and Matt Kenseth. Rookie Chase Elliott ran
sixth and extended his series lead to 12 points over JR Motorsports
teammate Regan Smith, who finished 17th.
The race world is suffering from a very unfortunate on track
accident were Tony Stewart struck and killed a fellow driver while
competing in his sprint car late Saturday night during a dirt-track
race at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park, the Ontario County
Sheriffs Department announced early Sunday morning. According
to multiple sources, Stewart was involved in an on-track incident
with 20-year-old driver Kevin Ward Jr., with Stewarts car striking
Ward after he got out of his car to confront Stewart about earlier
contact between the two. Stewart, a three-time Sprint Cup cham-
pion did not race in the Cheez-It 355 at the Glen on Sunday. While
Stewart is being investigated, Sheriff Philip Povero said the inves-
tigation is not criminal and that no charges have been filed.
Stewart was released. RR&R thoughts and prayers go out to fam-
ily of Kevin Ward Jr. as well as Tony Stewart and Stewart Haas
Racing.
Checkered Flags
Patrick Tibbetts of Barre earned his first career Allen Lumber
Street Stock victory during the only feature event to be concluded
before the rains came on Cody Chevrolet-Cadillac night on
Thursday night at Thunder Road.
Cody Sargen usually has a way with words. On Friday night at
Devils Bowl Speedway; the congenial 20 year-old was left
speechless in Victory Lane. The Greenfield Center, NY driver
won perhaps the most competitive NASCAR Whelen All-American
Series race of the season for his first-ever victory, but was just part
of a memorable night at the track. Seventeen year-old Emily
Packard was perfect on the night in winning a Triple Crown in the
Late Model division.
At White Mountain Motorsports Park on Saturday night top
honors went to Late Model feature winning Jeremy Harclerode
and Tiger Sportsman main event winner Elwin Sidney III.
Garage Garble
Four races on four very different tracks: Thats what faces the
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and the 2014 Chase for the NASCAR
Sprint Cup. For 11 drivers, its all or nothing time. For those 11
drivers with wins and therefore a likely Chase spot a victory
means three more bonus points tacked onto their total to start the
Chase. But, really, these next four races are all about the winless.
There are some big names out there battling for their playoff lives
Kasey Kahne, Clint Bowyer, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle. If the
Chase started today, only Bowyer would make it among the three
perennial Chasers.
Milestones Watch: Joe Nemechek made his 1,100th NASCAR
national series start this weekend in the ZIPPO 200 at The Glen.
Nemechek is third on the all-time NASCAR national series starts
list behind NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty (1,182) and
Mark Martin (1,142).
Theres a reason plenty of them, actually why Ryan Blaney
holds the Camping World Truck Series points lead, and has for
each of the last two weeks. Heres why: He has the most consecu-
tive top-ten finishes (seven) this season, extending his streak at
Pocono Raceway with a fifth-place finish; he leads the series with
seven top-five finishes; and he ranks tied with Johnny Sauter for
the lead in top-10 finishes, with nine. The driver of the No.29 Ford
F-150 will look to continue his steady pace at Michigan
International Speedway on Aug. 13 (12:30 ET on FS1) where he
has yet to complete a lap thanks to an accident on Lap 1 in his
only start there in 2013.
Next Lap
Thunder Road Double Features Thursday night: The remainder
of the Late Model feature and the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen
100-lapper will be run at 6:00pm before the Jet Service Envelope
sponsored regular scheduled event.
The Cup Series heads to the NASCARs fastest racetrack,
Michigan International Speedway for Sundays Pure Michigan
400 (ESPN, 1:00pm). David Pearson leads all drivers with the
most wins at MIS with 9 while Greg Biffle leads all active driv-
ers with 4 wins. The track qualifying record for the 2-mile,
D-shaped oval was set in June of this year by Kevin Harvick at
204.557 MPH. Joey Logano is the defending race champion.
Harvick has been the bridesmaid at Michigan for the last three
consecutive races.
Tony Stewart sat out Sundays Cheez-It 355 at the Glen after a tragic on
track accident at Canandaigua (NY) Motorasports Park Saturday night.
