Character List

Hercule Poirot - A retired Belgian police officer. Poirot is Christie's most famous
detective and is known for his short stature and long, curly moustache. Poirot is
very intelligent, extremely aware and instinctual and is a rilliant detective. !he
novel is generally written from his perspective.
M. Bouc - !he director of the Compagnie "agon #its and formerly worked for the
Belgian police force with Poirot. !raveling on the $rient %xpress, &. Bouc asks
Poirot to take the case. &. Bouc provides comic relief in the novel, constantly
frustrated with the case and confused y Poirot.
Dr. Constantine - !he coroner aoard the $rient %xpress. 'r. Constantine is
often Poirot or &. Bouc's sidekick and is present for most of the evidence gathering.
'r. Constantine examines (atchett's ody and determines when he could have een
killed.
Mary Debenham - 'aisy Armstrong's governess. &ary 'eenham is a calm, cool
and unruffled lady, instrumental in the planning of (atchett's murder. Poirot is most
suspicious of &ary ecause of conversation he overhears etween herself and
Colonel Aruthnot on the train to )tamoul.
Mrs. Hubbard - (eally #inda Arden, famous actress and grandmother of 'aisy
Armstrong. &rs. *uard provides constant interruption and diversion on the train
and is known for her stories aout her daughter. &rs. *uard's compartment is
next to (atchett's.
Colonel Arbuthnot - A friend of Colonel Armstrong, and father of 'aisy
Armstrong. #ike &ary 'eenham, Poirot suspects him ecause he called &ary y
her first name on the train to )tamoul. Colonel Aruthnot is hard-willed, polite and
very +%nglish.+
Princess Dragomiroff - A (ussian princess. Princess 'ragomiroff is a generally
despicale, ugly old lady, her yellow, toad-like face puts off Poirot. )he is the owner
of the famous +*+ handkerchief found in (atchett's room and tells Poirot many lies
aout the other passenger's identities.
Hector McQueen - (atchett's personal secretary. *ector is truly in cahoots with
the Armstrong family. &c-ueen tries to hard to tell Poirot that (atchett did not
speak any .rench/making him an immediate suspect in the case.
Ratchett - (eal name Cassetti, kidnapped and murdered the young 'aisy
Armstrong for money. !he Armstrong family murders (atchett ecause he escaped
punishment in the 0.). Poirot descries (atchett as a wild animal.
Countess Andrenyi - !he sister of )onia Armstrong, did not murder (atchett.
Because the Countess is closest to the Armstrong case, she attempts to conceal her
identity y dropping grease on her passport and smudging the name lael on her
luggage. !he Countess is 1uite young, dark haired and eautiful.
Count Andrenyi - A very defensive man who tries to conceal the true identity of
his wife, Countess Andrenyi. !he Count takes his wife's place in the murder.
Cyrus Hardman - !he ig flamoyant American. Cyrus is a detective with a well-
known detective service in 2ew 3ork City. *e ecomes involved with the
Armstrongs ecause he was in love with 'aisy's .rench nurse who committed
suicide after 'aisy was killed. Cyrus pretends to help Poirot with the case.
Antonio Foscanelli - &. Bouc is sure that Antonio, a ig menacing 4talian man,
had something to do with the murders, primarily ecause &. Bouc distrusts 4talians.
(evealed y Poirot, Antonio was the Armstrong's chauffer. Antonio loved dear little
'aisy and tears when he speaks of her.
Greta hlsson - 5reta $hlsson weeps and weeps and weeps. !he )wedish lady
was 'aisy Armstrong's nurse and is a very delicate type/not meant for murder.
Hildegarde !chmidt - *as a kindly face set in an expression of +placid stupidity.+
*ildegarde is rather slow-minded and un1uestioningly carries out the ugly
Princess's orders. *ildegarde pretends to e Princess 'ragomiroff's maid, ut is
truly the Armstrong's cook.
"d#ard Henry Masterman - (atchett's valet, rought into the murder plot y
*ardman. &asterman is not a terrily colorful character, mainly referred to y his
function/+the valet.+ &asterman is very polite and oedient, perhaps even
haughty.
Pierre Michel - .ather of the suicidal nursemaid of 'aisy Armstrong, is the
Conductor of the $rient %xpress. Pierre, like the other servants does not initially
receive much scrutiny/he is not a top suspect. *owever, as the novel progresses,
his involvement in the murder is proven essential.
