North Central Athletes Shaping Up Matt Miller Nets Another

Win At Oakshade Raceway

PHOTOS BY MARK MERCER, STAFF

GETTING IT STARTED ... The North Central Eagle Cross Country Team enjoys a
warm up jog on a beautiful morning at the Pioneer Boy Scout Camp on August 8.

Matt Miller dominated the American

Late Model Series (ALMS) presented by
Sunoco feature at Oakshade Raceway,
picking up his third feature win in the last
four weeks as well as pocketing another
$2,000.
Miller started on the pole and shot out
to a commanding lead early in the 30-lap
ALMS feature. Rusty Schlenk got by Jeff
Babcock for second several laps in and
tried to reel in the driver of the Rick Delong
Racing number 3. Without the benefit of
any caution periods, Schlenk was unable to
catch Miller and had to settle for a second
place finish. That finish was good enough
to put Schlenk back in front of Brian RuhlLOOSEN UP ... North Central Cross Country Head Coach Brady Ruffer leads his

a third place finish with Babcock slipping
back to fourth. Chris Keller finished fifth
and ALMS point leader Brandon Thirlby
ended up sixth.
Last weeks winner of both Sportsman
Twin 25 features, Tim Line, snatched the
lead at the start of this weeks feature
event. A caution after Graeme Short rolled
to a stop on the front stretch about halfway through the race tightened up the
field behind Line for a restart. Grochowski
was running second and couldnt take advantage as Line once again pulled out to
a sizable lead on his way to his sixth feature win of the year. Grochowski and Tim
Fisher had a great battle for second in the
final laps of the race with Fisher just edging out Grochowski at the checkered flag
for second. Chane Stuckey was fourth with
Rich Ruff finishing fifth after starting 16th.
Multiple cautions marred the first part
of the Bomber A Main with Terry Rushlow
leading. Tim Murphys top five run came to
an end after trying to go three-wide under

restart after a caution for debris. Chris
Sands followed Foks by Rushlow to take
over the second position. Sands was unable to challenge Foks for the lead as Foks
went on to pick up his eighth feature win
of the year. Sands second place finish kept
him in the point lead by a single point over
Foks. Rushlow held on to finish third followed by DeTray and Steve Morris.
John Martis spun on the first lap of the
Best Performance Motorsports Compact
feature and collected Brogan Rehklau to
bring out an early caution. Cody Stetten
started on the pole and led the entire distance of the race. Brandon Myers got by
Cory Gumm for second and tried to challenge Stetten for the lead, but ended up
finishing second with Gumm third. Last
weeks feature winner Aaron Barrick finished fourth after starting at the tail of the
field. Cole Walbolt was fifth.
Skeet Reckner jumped out to the lead
at the start of the Bomber B Main after
starting on the pole. Chuck Stuckey raced
Recker side by side for the lead early. Ray
Albert was running third but bounced off
the backstretch wall and retired to the
pits. A short while later, Garry Domoe
got into Stuckey while battling for second which sent both cars spinning. The
yellow flag flew and both drivers had to
restart at the back of the field. That put
Dan Dippman up to second. Despite a barrage of cautions the remainder of the race,
Dippman was unable to challenge Recker
for the lead. It was the first feature win of
the year for Recker. Dippman was second.
Domoe fought his was all the way back up
to a third place finish with Stuckey fourth.
Duane Fletcher finished fifth.

The Mike Fidler Memorial: A True Synergy Of Family & Community

By: Timothy Kays
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
When it comes to kids and Pioneer,
Ohio, chances are really good that a
member of the Fidler family has some
interaction with them. Whether it be
teaching or coaching, the Fidler family
remains dedicated to the kids of the
North Central School District.
Pioneer is like many other small towns
in the heartland of America. Everybody
knows everybody, and although family
always comes first, the lines between
family and community often disappear
when tragedy strikes. The proof of that
came on December 19, 2007, when Mike

Fidler Jr. passed away suddenly in his

home at the age of just 32. After a string
of other unfortunate incidences, Mikes
son, Brenden, found himself alone
before he had even reached the ripe old
age of ten. The family made sure that
he was taken care of with his everyday
needs, and from that point, the synergy
of family and community went to work
on securing Brendens future.
Parents normally save up for their
childrens college education, but that
option was almost instantly erased for
a young Brenden seven years ago. The
community then stepped in, and the
summer of 2008 saw the first annual

Mike Fidler Memorial Golf Tournament

to fund a scholarship for Brenden. The
seventh annual event was staged at
Windwood Hollow on August 9 of this
year, and just as it has done in the past,
the event drew dozens of sponsors, and
even more golfers.
While the final numbers of this years
event are still being tabulated, the 59
golfers that took to the links contributed
$2,950 in registration fees. That is only
the ground floor of a total that, including
other fundraisers like a 50-50 drawing,
will grow as the numbers are tabulated.
There
are
many
overlooked
advantages to living in small-town

America. One of the biggest and best is

that which helped build a young America
as it expanded westward in the late
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Family bonds are strong, but the bonds
of many families drawn together as
a community are indomitable. Those
tightly knit small communities forged
the America of today, and the events
at Windwood Hollow on this day are
the proof that the values and spirit of
community that built our nation are
still alive and well and thriving in
Pioneer, Ohio.

Casey Noonan Races To Finish First At Oakshade Raceway

Casey Noonan came out on top of an
extremely competitive UMP Late Model feature at Oakshade Raceway on Saturday
night for his second feature win of the season.
Brian Ruhlman got the advantage over
pole-sitter Rusty Schlenk at the start of the
25-lap UMP Late Model feature event after
starting on the outside of the front row.
Schlenk regrouped and began challenging Ruhlman for the lead a few laps later.
On lap nine, Schlenk had a shot to take
the lead as he and Ruhlman split around
Steve Miller who was fighting to stay on the
lead lap. Ruhlman held on, but Schlenk got
another run to the inside of Ruhlman with
another slower car in front of the leaders.
Ruhlman used the car as a pick which resulted in some contact while racing for the
lead on the backstretch. The leaders continued to work through heavy traffic which
allowed the rest of the top five to close in.
Casey Noonan snuck by for the lead late
in the race. A couple cars racing side by
side in front of Noonan made for an exciting finish. Ruhlman got to the outside and
somehow Noonan found room to the inside
of the two cars at the checkered flag. Ruhl-

man settled for a second place finish and

was able to close back to within four points
of Schlenk in the point standings. Steve
Kester notched another top five finish with
a third just ahead of Schlenk. Chris Keller
was fifth.
It was another heart breaker for Chane
Stuckey in the UMP Sportsman feature.
A few weeks back, Stuckey appeared as
though he might pick up his first Sportsman feature win after leading the majority of the second Sportsman Twin 25, but
an incredible run by Tim Line ended with
a pass for the lead on the final lap of that
race. This time, Stuckey took command on
lap two after passing Rich Ruff for the lead.
He then opened up a decent advantage over
the rest of the field. Line started seventh
and moved up to second by lap seven. Seven laps later, Line had caught Stuckey and
began to challenge for the lead. Line finally
took lead after a restart for a caution on lap
15. A couple laps later, Stuckeys car began
to smoke and he retired to the pits. Line
went on to pick up his sixth consecutive
feature win. Ruff wound up second with
Drew Smith finishing strong in third. Mike
Jessen and George Lindsey finished fourth

and fifth respectively.

Gregg DeTray won his third Bomber A
Main of the year in a dominating performance. DeTray started on the inside of the
second row and took over the race lead by
the completion of the first lap. Jeff Foks put
some pressure on DeTray for most of the
race, but had his run of consecutive wins
snapped at four. Chris Sands entered the
night with a slim points lead, but suffered
rear end damage after an incident with Terry Rushlow and was unable to finish the
race. Foks made one last move to the inside
of DeTray in the final corner of the last lap,
but it wasnt enough. The second place finish for Foks was good enough to take over
the Bomber point lead. Rick Dixon finished
third followed by Mathew Chapman and
Curt Dickie.
Brogan Rehklau started on the pole of
the Best Performance Motorsports Compact feature and drove away from the rest
of the field. A good four-car battle ensued
behind him between John Martis, Brandon Myers, Cory Gumm and Cody Stetten.
Rehklau earned his first ever Best Performance Motorsports Compacts feature win
with Gumm holding off Martis for second.

Stetten finished fourth with Myers fifth.

Tim Hancock and Jacob Gamber had a
great battle for the lead in a caution-filled
Bomber B Main. Gamber led early with
Hancock taking over the lead a few laps
into the event. Gamber fought back on the
outside and regained the lead, but slipped
up on the final lap allowing Hancock to reclaim it and take the checkered flag. Adam
Lantz also got by Gamber to finish second.
Gamber crossed the line third and Scott
Hammer just edged out Duane Fletcher for
fourth.
Special Tom Elling Memorial Australian
Pursuit Races were run for the top ten in
points in the UMP Late Model, UMP Sportsman and Bomber classes. Winners were
Ken Hahn, Tim Line and Mathew Chapman.
The Dual Push Truck Challenge takes
place Saturday, August 16th at Oakshade
Raceway and will feature two complete 25lap UMP Late Model feature events in addition to a full show of UMP Sportsmen,
Bombers and Best Performance Motorsports Compacts. Gates open at 4pm with
racing at 7pm.

For the second year in

a row, Tim Line swept the
UMP Sportsman Twin 25's
at Oakshade Raceway on
Saturday night. A set back
at the start of the second
Sportsman feature put Line
way back in the field and
made for some very exciting racing action late in the

into the lead and almost
put Derbeck in the wall.
Tim Line started on the outside of the second row and

over Lindsey and Derbeck.
Jamie Grochowski was

fifth.
The second Sportsman
Twin 25 feature race was
nothing like the first. Line
drew for an inversion of six,
putting him on the outside
of the third row. On the
first lap Derbeck, who was
directly in front of Line, had
a problem and fell way off
the pace. Line had to check
up and fell all the way back
to 17th. Chane Stuckey

over Jessen as Line tried to
work his way back through
the field. A caution on lap
17 tightened the field a final time with Line restarting in fifth. Line quickly got
around Grochowski and
Bruce Stuart without much
incident. With laps running
out, Line tried to find room
on the outside of Jessen for
second. Line squeezed by
on the outside and managed to make the pass after

pass for the lead on the final lap to sweep night's
events after an incredible
run. Stuckey settled for second with Jessen hanging on
to finish third. Stuart and
Grochowski rounded out
the rest of the top five.
A crazy finish was the
highlight of the UMP Late
Model feature event. Fivetime
Track
Champion
Rusty Schlenk was back in
championship form grabbing the lead over Brandon
Thirlby at the start. A big
pile up that involved Mike
Miller, Mark Pifer Sr., Josh
Haynes, Curtis Deisenroth
and Jeff Babcock brought
out the yellow flag early.
Thirlby took advantage and
took the lead by a nose at
the completion of lap two.
Thirlby and Schlenk raced
side by side for the lead
with Schlenk finally edging
out Thirlby on lap eight to
reclaim the top spot. After
that, Schlenk began to open
up his advantage. Steve
Kester was on the move and
worked his way up to second by lap 13 and set his
sites on Schlenk. Schlenk
seemed to have things well
in hand in the final laps
until Ken Hahn spun right
in front of Schlenk coming off turn four on the final lap. Schlenk was hard
on the brakes to keep from
getting into him and made
a great move to get around
him just as Kester was closing in. Schlenk managed to
nurse his car across the
line just ahead of Kester
to earn his fourth feature
win of the year and close to
within 17 points of Ruhlman who is on top of the
point standings. Thirlby
held on to finish third behind Kester with Ruhlman
fourth. Casey Noonan finished fifth.
Jeff Foks tightened up
the point standings in the
Bomber class, just three
points behind Chris Sands
after Foks collected his seventh A Main win of the year.
Foks took command at the
start of the A Main with
Gregg DeTray running second. A great battle ensued
well behind Foks with DeTray trying to fend off Curt
Dickie, Terry Rushlow and
Chris Sands. That battle
came to an abrupt halt for
Detray when his transmission locked up with just two
laps to go which brought

out the caution flag. Foks

took the checkered flag and
Chris Sands picked up a
couple positions at the end
to finish second. Rushlow
was third followed by Dickie
and Derek Morris.
Aaron Barrick picked up
his first feature win at Oakshade Raceway in the Best
Performance Motorsports
Compact feature event after
starting out the outside of
the front row. Brandon Myers worked his way up to
a second place finish after
starting near the back of
the field. Last week's feature winner, John Martis
ended up finishing third
with Brogan Rehklau and
Cody Stetten rounding out
the rest of the top five.
Scott
Hammer
took
the lead at the start of the
Bomber B main after starting on the outside of the
front row. Jim Remley muscled his way into the lead
on lap five with Richard
Riffe following into second.
Riffe then took the lead on
lap six on the inside and
went on to take the checkered flag. Skeet Reckner
managed to edge out Remley for second at the finish.
Terry Perry finished fourth
and Hammer slipped back
to finish fifth.
For the first time this
year, a Bomber C Main was
run to wrap up the night's

Wauseon Indian Marching Band Preps For

2014 -2015 Season At Defiance College Band Camp
By: Mark Mercer

THE VILLAGE REPORTER

DEFIANCE: July 30,

2014:
The
Wauseon
High School Marching
Band, under the direction
of Band Director Eric
Bosewell and Assistant
Band Director Jason Lozar
took the Indian Band to
Defiance College July
27 through July 31 for
summer camp. Seventythree of the seventy-five
members of the 2014

- 2015 Marching Band

made the five day trip,
where the students spent
the camp period in the
dorms together, bonding
into what is year after
year one of Northwest
Ohios finest High School
Marching Bands. Hosting
the Wauseon Band this
year was Defiance College
Director of Bands Bri
Olenik, while on field
assistance and direction
was provided by a group

University Band Members

students understand and
coordinate various sets.
Students
attending
this
years
camp
received a variety of
instruction and practice
in formation movement
and placement, as well as
marching techniques in
the five day session. The
Wauseon Band, according
to Director Bosewll, has
69 Charts , which are
band member positions,
and are illustrated in a
handheld booklet called
drill charts. Drill charts
show where each person
stands during each set of
the show. The drill charts
include yard lines and
hashes as they would be
on an actual football field,
which shows the band
members where to stand
in relation to the yard
lines and hashes.
During field time,
the band has been able
to put in over 30 show
charts, which will enable
the marching Band as
a whole during the fall
season to successfully
implement the entire
range of show selections
proficiently and with the
pride the Marching Indian
Band is well known for.
In addition to the field
instruction,
students
also received significant

instruction
time
and
practice on the march.
The
band
members
learned from both senior
leaders in the band and
from the other camp
instructors key elements
and attention to detail in
the techniques required
for on the march drill.
The Wauseon Marching
Band debuted their 2014
-2015 season on August 2
in the Wauseon Summer

Homecoming Parade in
downtown
Wauseon,
followed by a selection of
performances on Harmon
Field at 2:00 p.m. The
festivities were free to the
public and the members
of the band used the
weekend as a capstone
event following summer
camp to showcase their
2014 debut. From the
spirited way in which the
students enthusiastically

embraced the instruction

at camp, to the bonding
and
close
teamwork
the band demonstrated
on July 30 during The
Village Reporters visit
to Defiance College, it is
clear that The Wauseon
Indian Marching Band
will once again be one of
Northwest Ohios finest
on the field this fall!

Indians Fight Valiantly

At Liberty Benton
Against a field of 12, the Wauseon Indians were able to
finish in the top quarter of the Liberty Benton Invitational, held on August 6th. A score of 330 was good enough
to give the Indians third place, putting them just behind
host Liberty Benton with a 324. LLC took first place by a
single stroke at 323.
Wauseons T. Dominique tied Liberty Bentons A. August for the lowest score of the event, with both players
shooting a 73. B. Rupp contributed an 81 to the teams
efforts, and D. Williams fired an 84. The Indians roster
rounded out with A. Marshall and C. Brock adding a 92
and 96 respectively.

North Central Eagles Soar

Over Locos & Apaches
The Eagles of North Central claimed Suburban Golf
Course as their own on Thursday August 7th, earning
a hard fought victory over Montpelier and Fairview at a
tri-match. North Central scored a 173, while Montpelier
took second place with a 179. Fairview shot a 185, putting them in last place.
Fairviews Matthew Kozumplik did take home medal
honors, however, with a round of 40. Andrew Luke of
Montpelier was just behind him with a 41. David Pinc
and Brady Zuver proved a team effort trumps individual
scores, though, as their pair of 42s carried the Eagles to
victory.
