s this newsletter hits your IN box, the closest and the largest full Moon
of the year the Super Moon will rise on the night of 11
th
August at
18:26 (10th August at 18:09 UTC/GMT). Basically, a Super Moon is
when the Moon in its orbit, makes its closest approach to Earth, which is seen clearly
when at the full moon. The word super moon was first used by astrologer Richard
Nolle over 30 years ago. He stated that a Super Moon is "a new or full moon which
occurs with the moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given
orbit. In North America, the full moon in August was known by early Native American
tribes as the Full Sturgeon Moon because the large sturgeon fish of the Great Lakes
and other major lakes were more easily caught at this time of year. This moon has also
been known as the Green Corn Moon and the Grain Moon.
On the 18
th
August a conjunction of Venus and Jupiter occurs. Conjunctions are rare
events where two or more objects will appear extremely close together in the night
sky. The two bright planets will come unusually close to each other, only a quarter of a
degree, in the early morning sky. Also, the beehive cluster in the constellation Cancer
will be only 1 degree away. This rare, double-planet event is definitely one not to miss.
Look for the bright planets in the east just before sunrise. August 31 Mars, Saturn
and Moon will form a triple conjunction and share a small patch of sky.
The Master Class on the 30
th
August entitled Big Brother Planets: whos got my
back? will explore the concept of each planet being connected to another, not by
aspect but by rulership. Unless a planet is in dignity, it must look to its 'big
brother' or 'big sister' to take care of it.
In September, we explore Moon Aspects and in the last Master Class of the year in
October, Mars-Pluto: Aggressor or Survivor will explore Mars-Pluto combinations as a

Astro Mundi Courses
CERTIFICATE COURSE
This is designed for those with little or no knowledge of
astrology. The course provides the basic foundations of
astrological techniques, structure and interpretation.
Each Unit is conducted over six months and the Course is
conducted over a two-year period. At the end of the
course, the student can expect to be able to calculate a
chart and all the planets manually, have a good
understanding of signs, planets, houses and aspects, be
able to delineate simple aspects and do basic predictive
work.
DIPLOMA COURSE
This Course develops the skills gained at Certificate level
with an emphasis on chart delineation and predictive
work. Other techniques are also introduced with
specialised topics such as Relationships, Locational
Astrology, Solar and Planetary Returns, Pre-Natal Epoch,
Harmonics, etc.
TRADITIONAL ASTROLOGY COURSE
The Traditional Course builds on and further expands the
knowledge and appreciation of astrological heritage which
forms the basis of the profession. The course is ideal for
those who want to explore traditional and medieval
astrological techniques. The aim of the course is to
provide a sound basis of the principles and techniques in a
modern context.
All our courses and Master Classes are available for on-
line attendance via Skype. You can be present in class
and ask questions and participate in real-time discussions.

The Tragedy of MH17

My condolences to all who have been affected by this tragedy.













ustralia, together with the rest of the world is mourning those who were on board Malaysian
Airlines flight MH17which was shot down on the 17
th
July while en route from Amsterdam to
Kuala Lumpur. Tragedies like this touch not only those directly involved but like a stoned in a
pond, its ripples touch the furthest shores. As astrologers, we are witnesses to life and in its examination
look for meaning or explanation. Selecting a house that reflects the matter under consideration, is the first step.
For this event we go to the 9
th
as this is about a voyage and here we find the sign of Gemini on the 9
th
and Venus is
situated here in the last degrees of Gemini. The ruler of the 9
th
is Mercury in Cancer conjunct the MC suggesting that
this voyage is somehow brought to prominence or notoriety. Mercury receives an opposition from Pluto suggesting
that this voyage is in some of danger from strong forces which are either hidden (Pluto is in the 4
th
) or beneath it.
The airplane was the target of missiles fired from the ground beneath as it passed on its flight path over a sector of
the Ukraine. Additionally, a trine from Neptune suggests that there is confusion and misunderstanding on what hits
the plane. Mercury also rules the 12
th
suggesting that sorrow and hidden enemies are brought to light as a result of
this journey.
The Moon
In electional astrology, especially in the Hellenistic tradition, the placement of the Moon indicates the beginning of
the endeavour, and the placement of the lord of the Moon indicates the outcome. The Moon in the chart is in

Aries in the 7
th
suggesting that the beginning of the journey comes at a time of, or as a consequence of conflict or
open hostility as indicated by the 7
th
house placement of the Moon. As we now know, the plane was shot down
as a consequence of hostilities between the Ukrainian government and Russian separatists, although there is no
clear indication of who bears the ultimate responsibility: the separatists or those who armed them, to date this is
believed to be the Russian government.
The dispositor of the Aries Moon is Mars, in Libra, the sign of its detriment, conjunct the North Node in
the 1
st
house. This indicates that the outcome of this action is detrimental. As a malefic, Mars brings
destruction, mayhem and violence and as a consequence of Mars conjunction to the North Node its impact
and outcome is magnified Indeed, the destruction of Flight MH17 has had repercussions on three
continents. Apart from the families of crew and passengers, this event has also brought into focus Russia
and its hawk-like attitude to adjacent territories especially in the Ukraine.
Mars is a significator of war, military action, destruction and conquest. This lends added emphasis on the
outcome: not only the downing of the aircraft but the subsequent reactions from Europe, the US and the
rest of the world in condemning the part Russia has played. Sanctions have been implemented which are
designed to punish Russia for stoking the on-going civil war in Ukraine. In return, Russia has banned meat,
fish, dairy and fruit and vegetable imports from Western countries in the most drastic retaliatory measures
taken by the Kremlin to date. It seems the outcome of the tragedy was the ramping up of conflict as
described by the Mars in detriment in Libra in the 1
st
house.
Mars conjunct the North Node is amplified and we see the malefic nature of Mars expressed in the
destruction of the plane and the consequences it is having on all concerned.
In order to add a more specifics to the judgement we turn to Dorotheus of Sidon, who says:
... look for the traveller from the Ascendant, and [for] the land which he desires from the seventh, and for the action and for
the necessity which he seeks in that journey from the house of government [the tenth], and for the outcome of that matter from
the house of the fathers [the fourth].

The Passengers
Signified by the Libran Ascendnat, and with the ruler Venus in Gemini in the 9
th
house, most of the
passengers on the flight were either holiday makers on the way op holiday destinationsi or returning home.
Venuss condition is suspect as she is in the last degreees of Gemini, in the terms of the malefic Saturn.
Additionally, Venus is also void of course, as she makes no other aspect before changing signs. There is a
sense that the passengers had littel influence on what was to happen, and were brought together by being in
transit to and from foreign places.
The Destination
Dorotheus tells us to look to the 7
th
to see where the passengers were going. The 7
th
has Aries on the cusp
and the Moon, South Node and Uranus suggesting that he destinatio is unstable, enexpected or upsetting.
We can also speculate that this could also represnet the flight path of the aircraft which was travelling over a
sector which was unstable given the fighting and insurrection on the ground.
The Reason for the Journey
Here we look to the 10
th
to discover what is being sought on the journey. Cancer is on the cusp and
Mercury and the Sun in teh 10
th
. There wre many individual reasons for the journey but if we take the
indicators of the Sun and Mercury in Cancer, we can say that these revolved around family matters,
information and glory. Some of the passengers on the flight were headed to an AIDS conference in
Melbourne while some were on their way to holiday destinations, on business or visiting family.
The Sun in Cancer in the 10
th
is also at the bends of the Nodal axis and is the apex planet of a T-square with
Mars and Uranus, perhaps undescoring the crisis and destruction already symbolised by the Mars-Uranus on
the Nodal axis. Although Mars and Uranus are a bit wide of an opposition to each oter they are brought
together by eachs proximity to the Nodal axis, highlighting the nervous, volatile and unpredictable energy

that is the spine of the chart and involves the ruler of the 7
th
(the Sun is exalted in Ar ies) and the exalted
ruler of the 4
th
(Mars is exalted in Capricorn) as well as the dispositor of the Aries Moon.
The Outcome of the Journey
Following Dorotheuss instructions, we look to the 4
th
house and Pluto is in the 4
th
suggesting the outcome
is one of loss, grief and death. Capricorn on the cusp and its ruler, Satrun retrograde in Scorpio in the 2
nd

suggests financial losses as well. The loss of MH17 has devastated countless families, communities and
nations. It has also had serious financial implications on the airline, financial costs borne by several nations
who have sent forensic investigators to the crash site and it has also brought sanctions to and from Russia
affecting the economics of both that nation and its trading partners.
