II. Data warehousing and business intelligence

Data warehouse is a system that is used for to report and analyze data. It Integrates data
from many sources and creates a central repository of data known as a data warehouse. It
stores current and historical data of the company which is used for creating trend reports
for senior management and reporting such as annual and quarterly comparisons.
The data is uploaded from the various operational systems like marketing, sales, etc. to be
stored in the data warehouse.

The various types of data warehousing systems include:
Data mart: It is a simple form of a data warehouse that is focused on a single
functional area, such as sales, finance or marketing. They are built and controlled
by a one functional department of the organization. As the focus on only one
functional are they usually draw data from only a few sources.
Online analytical processing: It is characterized by a relatively low volume of
transactions. The queries asked are complex and involve aggregations. The
effectiveness measure of OLAP systems is the response time.
Online Transaction Processing: It involves a large number of short on-line
transactions such as UPDATE, INSERT, DELETE. These systems pay more
attention to fast query processing and maintaining the integrity of date in multi-
access environments. The effectiveness of OLTP is measured by the number of
transactions per second.
Predictive analysis: It involves finding and quantifying hidden patterns in the
data using complex mathematical models that enable the company to predict
future outcomes. It is different from OLAP as OLAP focuses on analysis of
historical data and is reactive in nature, while predictive analysis focuses on the
future.

Advantages of Data Warehouse
The data warehousing has the following advantages:
Collect data from multiple sources into a single database so a single query engine
can be used to present data.
Integrating data from various system sources, which enable a holistic view across
the various functional areas of the enterprise. This benefit is more valuable to an
organization that has grown by merger.
Improve the quality of data, by providing consistent codes and descriptions,
flagging or even fixing bad data.
