Q.1 An ideal gas is heated at a constant volume until its temperature is 3 times the original temperature, and then it
is expanded isothermally till it reaches its original pressure. The gas is then cooled at constant pressure till it is
restored to the original state. Determine the net work done per kg of gas if the initial temperature is 3!".
Q.# A fluid, contained in a hori$ontal cylinder fitted with a frictionless leak proof piston, is continuously agitated
%y means of a stirrer passing through the cylinder cover. The cylinder diameter is !.&! m. During the stirring
process lasting 1! minutes, the piston slowly moves out a distance of !.&' m against the atmosphere. The net
work done %y the fluid during the process is # k(. The speed of the electric motor driving the stirrer is '&!
rpm. Determine the tor)ue in the shaft and the power output of the motor.
Q.3 A vertical composite fluid column whose upper end opened to atmosphere has & cm of *g column of specific
gravity of 13.&, + cm of water column of density of 1!!! kg ,m
3
and a ! cm of oil column of specific
gravity of !.'#. Determine the pressure, -a. at the %ase of the column -%. at the oil/water interface, and -c.
at the water/mercury interface.

Q.& A fluid is contained in a cylinder %y a spring/ loaded, frictionless piston so that the pressure in the fluid is a
linear function of the volume -p0 a1%2.. T he internal energy of the fluid is given %y the following e)uation

, with no work other than that done on the piston, find the direction and
magnitude of the work and heat transfer.
Q. The temperature t on a thermometric scale is defined in terms of a property " %y the relation
t0 a ln " 1 %
where a and % are constants.
The values of " are found to %e 1.'3 and +.6' at the ice point and the steam point, the temperatures of which
are assigned the num%ers ! and 1!! respectively. Determine the temperature corresponding to a reading of "
e)ual to #.&# on the thermometer.

Q.1 7tate $eroth law of thermodynamics. 8hy this law is called $eroth law9 :xplain its importance in
measurement of temperature. :xplain thermometric property.
Q.# :xplain first law of thermodynamics with ;oule<s experiment. 8hat are the similarities and dissimilarities
%etween work and heat9 7how that energy is the property of the system
Q.3 Define Thermodynamics. :xplain macroscopic and microscopic point of view to study thermodynamics.
=lassify and explain the property of the system. 8hat is an isolated system9
Q.& Derive the expression for work done for polytropic and isothermal process.
Q. 7tate (oule<s law. 4rove that internal energy is a function of temperature for ideal gases. 4rove that for a
constant pressure process the heat transfer is e)ual to the change in enthalpy.
