FOREWORD
The Central Soil and Materials Research Station (CSMRS), an attached office of the
Ministry of Water Resources, is a premier Institute, which deals with field and
laboratory investiations, basic and applied research on problems in eomechanics,
concrete technoloy, construction materials and associated environmental issues,
havin direct bearin on the development of irriation and power in the country and
functions as an adviser and consultant in the above fields to various pro!ects and
orani"ations in India and abroad#
Broadly, the sphere of activities encompasses the following disciplines:

Soil Mechanics and $oundation %nineerin includin Soil &ynamics,
'eote(tiles, Soil Chemistry and Roc)fill Technoloy#
Roc) Mechanics includin Instrumentation, %nineerin 'eophysics and
&rillin Technoloy
Construction Materials and Concrete Technoloy includin Concrete Chemistry
and 'routin Technoloy#
*umerical Modellin in the field of 'eotechnical enineerin
CSMRS has underta)en eotechnical investiations for more than +,-- medium and
ma!or dams in the country in addition to foundation characteri"ation for brides, multi.
storied buildins, thermal and nuclear power stations, off.shore structures etc# The
research station has provided consultancy to Central 'overnment/State 'overnments/
0ublic Sector 1nderta)ins in the field of 'eomechanical and Construction Materials
Characteri"ation for various civil enineerin structures# It has completed several basic
and applied research problems# CSMRS has served as data ban) for the information
pertainin to its e(pertise by orani"in seminars, wor)shops, trainin courses and
publishin relevant literature#
CSMRS is proud of its past performance and )nowin its future responsibilities has
armed itself with a team of about +,- dedicated enineers and scientists, many of
them havin been trained abroad under various 1*&0 assisted prorammes
successfully completed durin last 2 decades#
3s a premier institute in the field of eomechanics, CSMRS is e4uipped with the state.
of.art facilities and trained manpower# CSMRS can ta)e up any challenin
investiation wor) in respect of dams, brides, multi.storied buildins, nuclear and
thermal power stations besides safety evaluation of e(istin hydraulic and other civil
enineerin structures# The Central and State 'overnment aencies and 0ublic Sector
1nderta)ins responsible for construction of multipurpose river valley pro!ects form
clients of CSMRS# Moreover, many ma!or private industrial comple(es, multi.storied
buildins, thermal power stations, etc# are also recipients of consultancy from CSMRS#

CSMRS has been playin a vital role in sharin )nowlede with enineers involved in
plannin, investiation, desin and construction of water resources development
pro!ects all over the country by holdin national level wor)shops and short.term
courses under various 1*&0, 1S3I& and Institutional co.operation prorammes# The
services of the 1*&0 and Institutional co.operation proramme5s international e(perts
in addition to the e(perienced CSMRS staff have been utili"ed for such activities#

CSMRS also helps universities and other orani"ations in their prorammes of
teachin, trainin etc# 3part from this, a si"able number of enineers have been
trained in the field of eomechanics# Reular trainin prorammes are oranised for
practisin enineers from overnment, private and public sector oranisations#
CSMRS is proud to have its contribution towards uidin the 0ost 'raduate students
from various enineerin collees li)e IIT, &elhi, &elhi Collee of %nineerin, etc# in
the field of 'eotechnical %nineerin usin the available *umerical Modellin
$acilities# Summer trainin is also imparted to raduate and post raduate students by
performin actual tests and lectures in the field of eomechanics#
The Research Station has maintained an e(cellent record of providin trainin and
consultancy services with its hihly 4ualified staff and e(cellent infrastructure facilities,
library and hostel#
The Research Station has planned seven reular trainin prorammes durin 2--, 6
2--7#

pro!ects#
The Research Station has planned to oranise seven trainin prorammes durin the
year 2--, 6 2--7 for the enineers at the level of 8unior %nineers, 3ssistant
%nineers/ 3ssistant &irectors, %(ecutive %nineers/&eputy &irectors# The officers
from the followin 9ranisations / Institutions are e(pected to participate in the trainin
proramme#

The contents of these trainin prorammes are planned in accordance with the
re4uirements and needs of the participants and user industry# The participants will be
introduced to the well.e4uipped laboratories of CSMRS and will be encouraed to
share their e(periences/problems, thereby ma)in the course interactive#
;esides, reular trainin prorammes, tailor made short.term courses on demand are
also oranised to cater the needs of the user oranisations#

Roc* fill echnology: Strenth and deformation characteristics of roc) fill materials#
+eosynthetics: %valuation of properties of polymeric materials under 4uality
assurance#
%oil "hemistry: %valuation of soil suitability as a construction material includin
dispersive characteristics#

"oncrete echnology
Concrete &iscipline underta)es field and laboratory investiations of construction
materials for ma!or river valley pro!ects in India and abroad# It has full fleded field and
laboratory facilities for conductin standardi"ed (;IS, 3STM etc#,) and speciali"ed
testin and analysis of concrete, masonry, cement, steel and other construction
materials for evaluatin the material properties, their failure and performance
problems# $ield investiation facilities include deployment of non.destructive testin
e4uipment by 1ltrasonic 0ulse >elocity method usin 01*&IT in assessin the insitu
4uality of the structure (concrete and masonry) in 4uestion#
Special testin facilities, housed in concrete laboratory, are utili"ed for studyin the
thermal properties of mass concrete, 3l)ali 3reate Reaction in concrete, 3brasion
%rosion Resistance, 0ermeability and &urability of concrete, Mi( desin of mass
concrete as well as hih performance concrete mi(es, construction 4uality control of
concrete in the field for ma!or hydraulic structures, &isseminatin )nowlede on Roller
Compacted Concrete for the construction of dams in the country# In addition to the
above, this &iscipline has the State of the 3rt e4uipment facilities for carryin out
studies on ?;ehaviour of Concrete under Multia(ial State of Stresses5 and lon term
behaviour of concrete under Creep#
Roc* (echanics
Roc) Mechanics &iscipline of CSMRS comprises &rillin, Instrumentation,
%nineerin 'eophysics, and <aboratory and In.situ Roc) %nineerin divisions# Main
activities are=
The 'eophysics division helps scan lare areas, and helps unravel the secrets of the
hidden earth# Investiation facilities to detect the distress in concrete structures by
scannin the upstream face of concrete dam usin the Remote 9perated 1nderwater
>ehicle (R9>) are also available#
The instrumentation division is involved in monitorin and interpretin the data of
various instruments installed at different river valley pro!ects#
The &rillin division is e4uipped with deep drillin facilities# It also underta)es drillin
re4uired for in.situ investiations, includin that for in.situ stress evaluation#

$or detailed and controlled testin of responses of roc) under different loadin
conditions, the Roc) %nineerin <aboratory is well.e4uipped to underta)e the holistic
assessment of roc)# The institution has facility for determination of in.situ stress,
deformation and shear strenth parameters of Roc) mass usin different methods #

Main activities of the discipline are= Chemical investiation of water, Concrete
durability, Chemical analysis of construction materials, &ianostic investiation of old
structures, %nvironmental related issues, $lyash mission related issues, 'routin

The sophisticated numerical modellin tools available at CSMRS to cater the problems
arisin in the field of eomechanics are=

The Research Station has hihly 4ualified and e(perienced faculty to impart trainin#
$aculty is also drawn from other professional oranisations and educational institutes
for sharin their hands on e(perience in their respective fields# The active research
bein underta)en on in various aspects of 'eotechnical %nineerin and Material
Science provides e(cellent input to the trainin courses#

The Research Station possesses documentation and library services where the library
is e4uipped with all latest literatures and e(cellent &T0 facilities# 3 Information
Technoloy centre with <3* facilities connects all nodes across the Research tation
includin the library#

The <ibrary and &ocumentation Centre of CSMRS was established in +BA+ to support
research and e(tension prorams of the research station# It has a collection of CC,-
boo)s, 2DCC standards, +27C technical reports, CA7 bound volumes of !ournals, B7
video cassettes/slides, DA- maps and C7 C&.R9M5s as on date# The CSMRS <E&
Centre is creatin database with the help of *IC by usin library software e.
'ranthalaya# The library has all the ;ureau of Indian Standards of Civil %nineerin,
Water Resources and Chemical %nineerin sements on <ocal 3rea *etwor) (<3*)
for use of CSMRS officials# It has also on.line access to important !ournals in the field
of roc) mechanics, soil mechanics and construction technoloy# ;esides, the library is
connected to &evelopin <ibrary *etwor) (&%<*%T) for utili"in all its services such
as Inter.<ibrary loan, on.line information services from &%<*%T databases etc#
The <E& Centre at present is havin membership of A *ational and F International
orani"ations for e(chane of information on different topics of interest beneficial to
CSMRS# These library facilities are available to the trainees#

relevant field# Specific eliibility for the courses is iven with the detailed information

The course fee per participant per day is Rs# A,-/.# The course fee should be remitted

fee includes lunch and refreshments#

3ll the trainin prorammes will be held at the premises of the Central Soil and

These courses can be conducted either at CSMRS or at the premises of the sponsor#
