ZHL Engineers Sdn Bhd was established in 2004 to provide professional con-
sulting services in the major fields of Civil & Structural Engineering and Pro-
ject Management services. The company has a pool of highly experienced
Engineers who have successfully undertaken various projects, prominently in
the fields of Stormwater and Urban Drainage, WSUD, Hydrology, Water Re-
sources and Infrastructure Works. ZHL provides all the necessary consultancy
services and assistance to ensure projects are of high quality, completed at
optimum cost and within the determined period of completion.

ZHL Engineers Sdn Bhd
Local government stakeholders, urban design professionals, project
managers, planners, urban designers, landscape architects and engineers.
Objectives
This shortcourse provides an introduction to water sensitive urban
design what it is, why it is important and key dos and donts to success-
ful implementation. The short course will also increase your knowledge
and skills in the conceptualization and development of WSUD solutions
and the integration with the urban form.
By the end of this course the participants will:
1. Be aware of the principles and benefits of WSUD
2. Have an appreciation of critical success factors for achieving water
sensitive developments, including a collaborative design process.
3. Be aware of successful water sensitive urban design projects accord-
ing to MSMA Manual in Malaysia
4. Have a strong understanding of the conceptual design process and
roles for each discipline at each stage of the process (associated risk
and costs).
5. Know how to apply WSUD at a range of scales and development
types.
6. Have a good understanding of the different WSUD technologies and
their most appropriate applications.
7. Be able to utilise the existing guidelines and to undertake WSUD in a
range of development types.
8. Be aware of typical requirements for the phases of development
approval and expose to Case study at HTC.
The short course will be the first of a series or training with future training
to provide detailed guidance on bioretention, permeable pavement, GPT,
rainwater, constructed wetlands and etc. and construction/establishment.

Background

Speakers
The training course will be conducted by Prof Simon Beecham
from University of South Australia, Assoc Prof Ir Dr Lariyah Mohd
Sidek and Prof Ir Dr Mohd Nor Mohd Desa from UNITEN.

Prof Dr Simon has vast experiences in many aspects of WSUD,
ranging from policy development to the design, construction and
establishment of WSUD infrastructure. He has worked on award
winning WSUD projects in South Australia.

Assoc Prof Dr Ir Lariyah will present Malaysian case studies. She
has been working in many aspects of WSUD from concept, design
to implementation.

Prof Ir Dr Mohd Nor will present the rainfall runoff input in the
design of WSUD under Malaysian condition.

Malaysia is blessed with abundant water resources. However,
high variability in water availability and water demand in the
country has resulted in various water related issues such as
scarcity, water pollution and flash floods, which has to be
managed efficiently and effectively through sustainable and
scientific approaches. WSUD concept is fairly new concept in
Malaysia to integrate a holistic approach to the management
of the urban water cycle including stormwater, water supply
and wastewater into the sustainable urban design of a project.
The WSUD strategy has been developed in partnership with
Best Planning Processes (BPP) and Best Management Prac-
tices (BMPs), to ensure sustainable development more impor-
tantly, to ensure that appropriate WSUD options can be se-
lected to compliment the sustainable urban design and land-
scape objectives. WSUD Concept can be simplified as formu-
lating development plans that incorporate and integrated ap-
proach to the management of the urban water cycle.

This course is designed for practitioners who are involved in
the planning, design and / or approval of drainage stormwater
projects. This course covers the basic principle of WSUD. It
takes participants through the functional design process re-
quired for wetland, bioretention system, swales and ponds.
Topic includes the concept design of wetlands, swales, biore-
tention systems and ponds. An overview of the MUSIC model
is also presented. In addition, practitioners will work through
detailed work examples design to facilitate confidence in ap-
plying WSUD going forward. This course is very useful for prac-
titioners who do not deal with WSUD engineering require-
ments everyday, but where a basic understanding of the con-
cept, design requirements would be advantages. For instance,
the application of WSUD requires a basic understanding of
hydrology and hydraulics. However, practitioners such as plan-
ners, managers, landscape architects and environmental sci-
entist may not have the chance to develop these skills during
their academic or professional experience. The course is com-
pletely consistent and follows the same methodologies de-
tailed within the MSMA manual.
