Composition and Inverse
In the final week of MAT 222 we learned about functions and how they are used. A
function is the root of a polynomial equation. Functions can be demonstrated using a number of
terms that involves the algebraic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and
raising to a fractional power. They extend independent and dependent variables by graphing in
the coordinate plane and creating a demonstration of relationship. Each function input value has
one output value. The value must be the same as it is not a function if it has a different output
value. In a graph, if a vertical line is drawn and it touches it is not a function. Functions can also
be used in real world situations in different areas of life such as personal or professional. One
common way that functions are used in real life situations is that of determining gas efficiency.
For example if a car gets 20 mpg (miles per gallon), and 10 gallons of gas is dispensed the car
will be able to travel approximately 200 miles. The cars efficiency may be a function of the
cars design which includes weight, tires, speed, temperature inside and outside the car, and other
factions.
To demonstrate how to complete a function in detail the following problems will be
solved:
f(x) = 2x +5 g (x) =x2 -3 h(x) =

Compute (f h) (4)
I will also evaluate two compositions as follows:
a. (f o g) (x)
b. (h o g) (x)
Running Head: Composition 3

Graph the g(x) function and transform it so that the graph s moved 6 units to the
right
Find the inverse functions:
C: f
-1
(x)
D: h
-1
(x)
The first task is to compute (f h) (4). The problem is demonstrated as follows:
(f h) (4) = f (4) h (4) Separate the function and then subtract
f (4) = 2 (4) + 5 x is replaced by 4 then multiply
f (4) = 8 + 5 Add
f (4) = 13
h (4) =

Use the same steps as above and replace x with 4 and subtract
h (4) = =

Cancel the common factor

h (4) = 1
(f h)(4) = 13 1 Subtract
(f h)(4) = 12 Solution after substituting the values an subtracting
The second task is to evaluate the following two compositions (f o g) (x) and (h
o g) (x). I will find the solution for the function g(x) and then calculate. The variable
x will be substituted in f(x). It is demonstrated as follows:
(f o g)(x) = f(x
2
3) g replaces x and then f is applied to g
(f o g)(x) = 2(x
2
3) + 5 Simplify
(f o g)(x) = 2x
2
6 + 5 Add
(f o g)(x) = 2x
2
1 Solution to first problem
(h o g)(x) = h(x
2
3) g replaces x
Running Head: Composition 4

(h o g)(x) = =

Simplify and subtract

(h o g)(x) = =

Solution
Next I will transform g(x) so that the graph is placed 6 units to the right and 7 units
downward from where it would be right now. By doing this six units to the right will mean that
6 will become a negative on the inside and seven units downward will make 7 a negative on
the outside. The demonstration and solution is as follows:
g(x) = x
2
3 Substitute and add values
g(x) = (x -6)
2
-3 7
g(x) = (x -6)
2
10 Solution

The final task is to find the inverse of two of the functions f and h. In order to find
the inverse I will replace the function with y and switch x and y then solve for y. The
functions that will be used are f(x) = 2x + 5 and h(x) =

. The detailed description and

solution is as follows:
f(x) = 2x + 5 h(x) =

Given functions
y = 2x + 5 y =

Replace f(x) and h(x) with y

x = 2y + 5 x =

Switch y and replace with x

x = 2y + 5 Solve for y
x =

Subtract
x -5 =

Divide
y =

Change y to inverse function f

-1
(x)

f
-1
(x) =

Inverse function solution

y =

Solve for y
y = (7 x) Change y to inverse function h
-1
(x)
h
-1
(x) = 7 3x Inverse function solution

In conclusion, functions are used every day in real world problems. Understanding the
use of functions is essential as it helps in personal and business situations. Most do not think that
algebra is useful in the real world however after completing several tasks and applying it to daily
life I realize that algebra is necessary and useful in everyday life.
