CHAPTER TWELVE
Worldly Cockiness
The problem is that too many Christians are just plain cocky. There is a difference between being confident

and being cocky. If we are confident, we have our trust in God. There is such a thing as being spiritually
confident and that's good. But there is another thing called worldly cockiness. Those who are worldly cocky
have egos that are so big they are not scared of man or God.
Those who fall into that type of cockiness will be grieved. They shall be among the ones who will gnash
their teeth, and their very desires will perish. "The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his
teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish" (Psalm 112:10 — KJV). According to the
psalmist, we are either blessed or cursed. The psalms give two examples, the righteous and the wicked. This
means there is no middle ground. We are either blessed or cursed.
Summary
God promises in Psalm 112 that those who fear the Lord will be blessed. Fear is defined as revering and
honoring God. Because we fear (revere) Him, we keep His commandments. Revering and honoring Him leads
to righteousness, and He explicitly tells us that the righteous shall prosper. The opposite of fear is "worldly
cockiness" which leads to devastation. Those who fear the Lord shall be blessed because fear is the beginning
of wisdom. Those who fear the Lord may be blessed materially and/or spiritually. Those who fear the Lord
shall be blessed in that 1) their children shall be blessed, 2) they will be able to overcome crises, 3) they will
be remembered for a long time, 4) they will be given exalted power, and 5) they shall not be afraid or worry
about the future.
