2.2 Construction and principle of operation

These power supply systems are designed to deliver an uninterruptible supply to DC loads.
Rectifier units are used to convert electrical energy taken from the AC mains supply into a direct
voltage for feeding the DC loads and the battery.
The loads are fed from the battery when the AC mains supply fails.
DC loads can be securely supplied with rated currents of 30/25 A at nominal voltages of 48 V/60 V.

The equipment comprises the following cabinets:
- power supply system
- battery cabinet

The individual components of a standard power supply system are:

Switched-primary rectifier units
Control and alarm unit SVS-SM7
Facilities for measuring battery and load currents
Fuse-disconnectors for the connection of 2 groups of batteries
Deep-discharge protection (optional).
Temperature-dependent charging characteristic (optional)

All rectifier units are provided with supervisory facilities.

The operational status of these units together with the most important system data for the complete
equipment (e.g. the voltage to the loads and the current through the battery) are evaluated in the
SVS-SM7 control and alarm unit and displayed in abbreviated plain language on a 16-character
panel.

The operational status can be interrogated, and the system parameters can be changed, with the
aid of the keys on the SVS-SM7 or on an IBM-compatible PC connected to the RS232 interface
provided.

Several rectifier units can be operated in parallel in order to obtain a higher rated power.

The subrack can be fitted with up to 4 rectifier units.

All the necessary connection points to the units are arranged on the front of the equipment. The
control and alarm lines are connected via a plug and socket.

The cabinets are suitable both for free-standing installation and for mounting against a wall.
Several systems can be installed adjacent to each other and bolted together in a row.
It is also possible to install the SVS cabinet on top of a battery cabinet of the same design and bolt
the two together.
Appropriate installation kits can be supplied for this purpose.

2.3 Functional units

In the following description, the LCD indications are given in a different typeface and for the most
part are followed in parentheses by a full-text equivalent in italics. Blank characters in the display
are represented here by underscore symbols _.

2.3.1 Rectifier unit

The rectifier units are fed from the public electricity supply network. They convert the alternating
voltage into a direct voltage.
The modern switched-mode design used in the rectifier units achieves a high regulation accuracy
with a high efficiency and at the same time leads to reduced dimensions and weight.

The rectifier units are operated in standby mode in parallel with the battery.

The necessary control voltages, commands and signals are fed to each rectifier unit by a ribbon
cable which, depending on the type rectifier unit. Mounted next to the SVS-SM7control and alarm
unit.

2.3.2 Control and alarm unit SVS-SM7

General

The control and alarm unit is the central supervisory, control and alarm reporting facility for the
power supply system.

This unit acquires all the necessary measured values and operational status signals generated by
the power supply system and initiates the necessary reactions by the equipment.

The design of the SVS-SM7 unit enables the various control, alarm and supervisory requirements
to be met without any software or hardware changes to the equipment.

To this end, the SVS-SM7 unit must be configured before it is first put into service. The
configuration data and all the limit values are stored in an EEPROM so that they are available each
time that the equipment is switched on again.

The configuration is protected by a password and can be accessed only by employees of
SIEMENS.
All limits and operating parameters are initialized meaningfully after the configuration has been
carried out. Equipment owners are able to adapt these settings to their own requirements. This
setting facility is also protected by a password which is made known to the owners.

The SVS-SM7 unit comprises the printed-circuit board SVS-EA6 in double Europa card format and
a front panel suitable for installation in a 19 subrack. Screwed connector strips are provided on the
front panel for the input and output connection lines.

panel. The D-Sub connectors X3 provide for the direct connection of SIEMENS rectifier units. All
the necessary signals between the rectifier units and between the SVS-SM7 and the rectifier units
are carried by these connectors.

The SVS-SM7 has 7 analog and 7 binary inputs, 1 analog output, 6 binary outputs and 1 RS232

SVE730 Description and Operating Instructions

A30050-X6303-X100-3-7618 Page 12 of 47

2.3.2.4 Digital outputs

All digital outputs have floating relay contacts.

1 Unlatch rectifier unit

The rectifier unit is switched off briefly by the control and alarm unit and then back on again to
unlatch it.

2 Charging characteristic for parallel operation (2.06 V/cell)

2.31 - 2.40 V/cell charging characteristic control function.
The contact closes when this charging characteristic is selected, either manually or by the
automatic charging facility after the battery has been discharged.

Not selecting a charging characteristic results in the automatic selection of the float charging
characteristic (2.21 - 2.30 V/cell).

4 SV1 alarm
Alarm contact: equipment fault.

The internal relay in the SVS-SM7 releases for the following faults:
when one of the monitored voltages is too high or too low,
when an equipment fault is present
("Mains Failure" and "No Rf. in Oper." are NOT equipment faults).

The X2.1-21 and X2.1-22 (of SM7) terminals are closed for a fault.

5 SV2 alarm
Alarm contact: battery discharging
The alarm is delayed; the amount of delay "tSV2Dly" can be preset.

The internal relay in the SVS-SM7 is energized when:
the battery is discharging (AC mains supply failure or no rectifier in operation).

The X2.1-24 and X2.1-25 (of SM7) terminals are closed for a fault.

6 Deep-discharge protection
Control function: battery connected, battery disconnected.

The internal relay in the SVS-SM7 is energized, and the deep-discharge protection contactor
releases, when:
the load voltage and the battery voltage fall below a preset value.
SVE730 Description and Operating Instructions

A30050-X6303-X100-3-7618 Page 13 of 47

2.3.2.5 Operating card (integrated in the control and alarm unit)

All measured values and operational conditions from the SVS-SM7 control and alarm unit are
displayed by the 16-digit panel on the operating card.
Operating conditions can be displayed and system parameters changed either by using the keys or
by connecting an IBM-compatible PC to the RS232 interface socket.
LED indicators also display the conditions Operation (green) or Fault (red).
The interface RS232 is potential-free.

2.3.3 Deep-discharge protection

To protect the battery connected to the SVS system from being discharged beyond a specified
limit, it is disconnected from the system when the battery terminal voltage falls below a preset
threshold. A special contactor is connected in the connection to the battery for this purpose.

The battery is disconnected when the battery and load voltage falls below the preset value
Ub_Sw.Off. The battery is reconnected and recharged when the load voltage rises above the
preset value Ul_Min.

2.3.3.1 Isolating blade terminal

The switching contact integrated into the SVS-SM7 control and alarm unit for the control of the
deep-discharge protection circuit breaker can be short-circuited by inserting the isolating blade
terminal. This plug protects the loads against an accidental interruption of the DC supply during
maintenance work on the SVS-SM7 control and alarm unit.

2.4 Operating conditions

2.4.1 Charging characteristic control

The equipment can be operated with a choice of charging characteristics.

Charging characteristic for parallel operation (2.06 V/cell)

This charging characteristic is required when sensitive loads with a narrow voltage tolerance are
being supplied. All the paralleled rectifier units are hard-switched to 2.06 V/cell.
This charging characteristic can be manually activated from the keypad of the operating card while
the SVS-SM7 is in the "Calibr." [setting] mode.
The rectifier units are switched to this charging characteristic automatically when a battery
availability test is started.

Charging characteristic for float charging (2.21 to 2.30 V/cell)

All rectifier units are switched to this charging characteristic for normal operation.
The value of float charging voltage required depends on the type of battery connected.
SVE730 Description and Operating Instructions

A30050-X6303-X100-3-7618 Page 14 of 47

The value of voltage per cell appropriate for the battery in use can be set in the Calibr. menu of
the control and alarm unit SVS-SM7.

Charging characteristic for recharging (2.31 to 2.40 V/cell)

To shorten the recharging time for the battery, all the rectifier units can be switched to the 2.31 to
2.40 V/cell charging characteristic.
The value of recharging voltage required depends on the type of battery connected.
The value of voltage per cell appropriate for the battery in use can be set in the "Calibr." [setting]
menu of the control and alarm unit SVS-SM7.

2.4.2 Temperature-dependent charging voltage

The power supply system is fitted with a temperature compensation facility to make it possible to
correct the float charging voltage according to the temperature of the battery.

The float charging voltage is varied in inverse proportion to the battery temperature in accordance
with a temperature coefficient. The float charging voltage is reduced when the battery temperature
rises and increased when the battery temperature falls.

The temperature factor must be set to match the battery type if the battery is changed.

NOTE: Observe the battery manufacturer's instructions.

2.4.3 Charging characteristic compensation

The rectifier unit voltage characteristics are regulated by the control and alarm unit SVS-SM7 in
accordance with the operating conditions of the system. Changing the settings of the charging
characteristic potentiometers in the rectifier units has no effect on the output voltage when
operating with the control and alarm unit SVS-SM7 (control cables plugged-in).

Therefore: Do not change the settings of the potentiometers in the rectifier units!

The function of the output voltage regulation can be enabled or disabled in the Calibr. menu. If the
function is activated, the load voltage of the system will be regulated to the preset value of the
system via the temperature compensation input of the rectifiers.

Attention: If the controller cable X3 of the SM7 is removed, the regulation loop is broken. This
might have the result that by connecting X3 again, the system could get a voltage
peek of about 5V. To avoid this, the user should deactivate the output regulation
function before disconnecting X3 from the SM7. This will be done in the menu
Calibr., Submenu Calibr. voltage, option Set Ul.reg. After reconnecting X3
to the SM7, the output voltage regulation may be activated again.

SVE730 Description and Operating Instructions

A30050-X6303-X100-3-7618 Page 15 of 47

2.4.4 Automatic charging

All the rectifier units are hard-switched to the charging characteristic for float charging
(2.21 to 2.30 V/cell) in normal operation. If the battery is discharged for longer than the preset time
"tMains F" (i.e. during a failure of the AC mains supply, after all rectifier units have failed or during
a battery availability test), all the rectifier units will be switched to the recharging characteristic
(2.31 to 2.40 V/cell) once they are again in operation.

If during this charge the battery terminal voltage reaches the preset value "UChg End", the battery
will continue to be charged for the preset time "tBattChg". Thereafter, the rectifier units will be
switched back to the charging characteristic for float charging (2.21 to 2.30 V/cell).

2.4.5 Battery availability test (BT) (optional)

The battery availability test (BT) is carried out with the rectifier units switched to a standby
condition. They are ready for operation but supply no power and the load current is taken entirely
from the battery. The system remains in this condition until the test period has expired or until the
battery voltage has fallen to the preset value "UBT.End". After this, the rectifier units supply the
load again without delay.

There are three different ways to start the battery availability test (BT):
automatic BT
manual BT
BT after detection of battery asymmetry

The duration of the battery availability test is set to match the period of autonomy required from the
system battery.

2.4.6 Automatic BT

The battery availability test (BT) is started automatically at the preset interval "tBT.Rep".
The recommended value for the duration of the automatic test "tBT.auto" is about one third (1/3)
of the period of autonomy required from the system battery.

If the battery terminal voltage at the end of the test is below the preset value "UBT.End", the fault
message "BT negative" appears on the operating card display panel. The equipment alarm SV1
is given and latched. It must be reset via the operating card keys to clear the display.

2.4.7 Manual BT

The capacity of the battery can be checked at any time by activating the manual battery availability
test from the operating card keys.

The recommended value for the duration of the manual test "tBT.manu." is about one twentieth
(1/20) of the period of autonomy required from the system battery.

SVE730 Description and Operating Instructions

A30050-X6303-X100-3-7618 Page 16 of 47

If the battery terminal voltage at the end of the test is below the preset value "UBT.End", the fault
message "BT negative" appears on the operating card display panel. The equipment alarm SV1
is given and latched. It must be reset via the operating card keys to clear the display.

2.4.8 Battery availability test with asymmetric battery

The individual voltages at the terminals of the battery blocks forming a battery group can differ from
each other if the battery is left for a long time without a load. A load test can eliminate the
asymmetry. The test will run for the preset time "tBT.Asym" after the BVT function is activated.
The "Battery Asymetr" fault indication is disabled during this time.

The fault indication is again enabled if the battery still shows asymmetry after completion of the
test. The "B.Asym after BT" fault is displayed and latched. It must be reset via the operating card
keys to clear the display.

2.4.9 Battery circuit monitor (optional)

Measurement of asymmetry

The voltage at the battery center-tap is continuously compared with one half of the voltage to the
load. An SV1 alarm is given and the "Battery Asymetr" fault is displayed on the operating card
whenever the difference between these two voltages exceeds the preset value "Ub Asym".

If the battery availability test was enabled during the configuration of the equipment, the alarm is
initially suppressed and the battery test is started. The alarm is re-enabled if the battery is found to
be still asymmetrical after the battery test has been completed.

2.4.10 Battery charging current limiting

The maximum battery charging current can be preset in steps that are 10% of the rated current.
This allows the charging current to be restricted to the maximum permissible charging current
specified by the battery manufacturer.

2.4.11 Emergency operation

Releasing relays will set the power supply system into a safe condition if the control and alarm unit
SVS-SM7 should fail.

Under those circumstances, all rectifier units and the battery remain switched on and the charging
characteristic is switched to 2.23 V/cell.

The SV1 (equipment fault) and SV2 (battery discharging) alarms will be given.

SVE730 Description and Operating Instructions

A30050-X6303-X100-3-7618 Page 17 of 47

2.4.12 Maintenance break point

The contact in the control and alarm unit SVS-SM7 that is used to drive the deep-discharge
protection circuit breaker can be short-circuited by inserting a blade between the terminals
provided.

This protects the load from an unintended interruption of the supply during repair work on the
control and alarm unit SVS-SM7.

2.4.13 Deep-discharge protection

To protect the battery connected to an SVS system from a deep discharge, it is disconnected from
the system when the voltage falls below a preset deep-discharge threshold.

A DC circuit breaker is connected in series with the battery for this purpose. The battery is
disconnected when the battery terminal voltage and the load voltage fall below the preset value
"UB SwOff" [disconnect battery].

The battery is reconnected and recharged as soon as the load voltage increases above the preset
value "Ul Min" [load voltage low].

2.4.14 Battery and deep-discharge protection monitor

An SV1 alarm is given when the difference between the battery terminal voltage and the load
voltage exceeds 1.5 V. The "B.1 Fuse Failure" [battery 1 fuse-disconnector open] or "B.2 Fuse
Failure" [battery 2 fuse-disconnector open] fault is indicated on the operating section display panel
or on the PC screen. This warns that the connection to the battery has been interrupted (e.g. by a
blown fuse or by the deep-discharge protection circuit breaker opening). The fault LED lights.

3.3 Switching on

Check the following conditions before switching on the power supply equipment with the AC mains
supply and the battery:

1. The battery fuse-switch disconnectors are open.

2. The load circuit breakers are open.

3. The rectifier unit output circuit breakers and input circuit breakers (AC mains supply circuit
breakers) are open.

4. The rectifier units are set for the system nominal battery voltage (check the 24/48/60 V
selector switch through the case-opening on the right side of each unit).
5. The AC mains supply input connectors are in place and the DC output connections have
been made with the correct polarity.

6. The 15-way ribbon cable is not connected to each of the rectifier units.

IMPORTANT:

Accidental contact between the pins of the Sub-D connectors on the 15-way ribbon cable and
ground could damage the equipment. Therefore always handle the connectors carefully and fit
them with protective caps when they are not plugged in.

3.3.1 Connecting the battery

1. Connect the system battery through to the SVS equipment by inserting the battery fuses.

2. The SVS-SM7 control and alarm unit equipment will now receive operating supply via

3.3.2 Connecting the rectifier units and deep-discharge protection

1. Insert the AC mains supply fuses to switch on the rectifier units, one after the other.
The red LED Operat. (operation) indicators on the rectifier units will light after a short
delay. Check the DC output voltage from the rectifier units at their output terminals
with a multimeter.

2. Close the output circuit breakers on the rectifier units. The rectifier units will deliver an
output voltage to the busbar. The SVS-SM7 control and alarm unit will measure the
voltage and will then close the deep-discharge protection circuit breaker. The battery is
now connected to the load busbar.

3. Configure the rectifier units from the PC or the operating card connected to
the RS 232 interface on the SVS-SM7 control and alarm unit.

4. Connect the rectifier units to the SVS-SM7 control and alarm unit by plugging on the
15-way ribbon cables.

WARNING: Accidental contact between ground and the pins of the Sub-D connector on the
ribbon cable can damage the equipment, therefore handle them carefully and
insulate any unconnected plugs with their protective caps.

NOTE: The rectifier unit charging characteristics are regulated via the SVS-SM7 control
and alarm unit in accordance with the operational status of the equipment.
Altering the potentiometers in the rectifier units while an SVS-SM7control and
alarm unit is in use (control cable connected) will not have any effect on the rectifier
unit output voltage. Therefore, do not readjust the potentiometers in the rectifier
units.

3.4 Operating the power supply equipment

The SVS-SM7 control and alarm unit can be operated and configured either from the operating
card or from a PC with terminal program.

3.4.2.7 Event storage

Fault events are represented by a numerical code. The code numbers for the last twenty fault
events are recorded automatically in an event store in which the event storage cells are numbered
from 0 to 19. The code number for the first event is stored in cell 0. Code numbers for subsequent
events are stored in the remaining cells until the last cell (cell 19) is reached. From then on, each
new event is stored in cell 19 and the earlier code numbers are each pushed down one cell, the
event code in cell 0 being lost each time. The code in cell 19 then always represents the latest
recorded event and the code in cell 0 always represents the earliest recorded event. The complete
event store can be cleared at any time if required (see section 2.4.3) and the sequence will start
again from the beginning.

Confirm selection of the Store_ _ _ Event_ _ _ (event storage) menu option by pressing the [] key or the

3.5 Initial testing

Make the following tests after the power supply equipment has been connected up as described
above and the battery and rectifier units have been successfully switched on:

3.5.1 Rectifier load

Remove the rectifier output fuses Q231 to Q234.

Remove the standard switch covers from the battery fuse-switch disconnectors F21 and
F22 and replace them with the test attachment but rotated through 180.

Connect a dummy load to the test attachments.

Insert the rectifier output fuses Q231 to Q234.

Set the dummy load to equal 30 times the number of rectifier units in the cabinet.

Check the value of output voltage and load current indicated on the display panel.

3.5.2 Charging the battery

The batteries are delivered in a charged condition.

Check the state of charge of the battery with the following test:

Preparations:

Check that the rectifier units are in operation.

Check that the battery fuse-switch disconnectors F21 and F22 are open.

Check that the load circuit breakers Q50 to Q54 are open.

Set the operating unit SVS-SM7 via the keypad to display the measured value of battery current
at "Ib" in the "MeasuredValue" menu.

Test switch-on:

Insert the battery fuse-switch disconnectors F21 and F22.

IMPORTANT:

Assume that the battery is not fully charged if the charging current does not fall to a value of
0.5A within 30 minutes. Discontinue the initial testing. The initial test can be repeated only
after the battery has been charged for 72 hours.

3.6 Maintenance cut-out for deep-discharge protection

Close the X45 jumper before you do any maintenance work on the control and alarm unit SVS-
SM7. It will bridge the contact that trips the deep-discharge protection circuit breaker. This will
ensure that the loads continue to be supplied from the battery after the AC mains supply fails
(rectifier units off).

1 Construction and principle of operation

The rectifier units are used to generate a voltage to charge or float charge the battery
and to feed sensitive DC loads.
The input to the rectifier unit is taken from the public AC mains supply. The rectifier unit
converts the alternating voltage into a direct voltage.
The rectifier unit consists mainly of a step-up (Boost) converter which is fed from the AC
mains supply via a bridge rectifier, a DC-DC converter which converts the intermediate
circuit voltage to the required output direct voltage, the output filter and the electronic
regulation, control and supervision circuits.
The bridge rectifier rectifies the input voltage that is taken from the AC mains supply.
The input filter minimizes the high frequency interference that might otherwise find its
way back into the public AC mains supply.
The step-up converter is controlled by the shape of the AC mains supply voltage in such
a way that the current drawn by the rectifier unit is sinusoidal.
The electrical isolation between the AC mains supply and the rectifier unit output takes
place in the DC-DC converter. The intermediate circuit voltage is converted there into
the desired output direct voltage.
The high frequency (100 kHz) with which the internal power semiconductors are
switched ensures that a high dynamic regulation is obtained with a very good efficiency
and practically silent operation.
The rectifier unit can be set for one of three nominal voltages: 24 V, 48 V and 60 V.
The current-limiting circuit becomes active if the rectifier unit is overloaded or if a load is
short-circuited. The output current is limited to the rated current to prevent an overload
of the intermediate circuit.
All the necessary connections are made on the front of the rectifier unit. The power
connections are protected against electric shock through accidental contact.
The rectifier unit is protected on the DC and AC sides by power circuit breakers
(external).
The rectifier unit is designed for a single-phase input and is cooled by internal fan.
Several rectifier units may be connected in parallel. The load is shared equally amongst
the paralleled units (sloping characteristic).
