The goal of this assignment is for the students to explore a variety of works in order to
discern literary value in each. You will examine 3 primary sources that focus on a
similar theme:
Begin by choosing a classic novel or play. Once an appropriate theme has been
identified, research and select a website presenting the life and works of a prominent
literary figure who has written extensively about your chosen theme. The course themes
include:
1) Appearance Vs. reality 4) Man’s quest for knowledge
2) Innocence and experience 5) Social Justice
3) Passion Vs. reason 6) Discrimination and racism.
You may choose from these, however you are not limited to these themes. Possible
alternatives could include war, love, friendship, betrayal etc.
Once you have read your novel and examined your other sources you will ponder upon
and determine the answer to the following questions:
• At the first ISU conference with your teacher, you will be asked to justify your
choice of primary sources, and classification of each under your chosen theme.
• You will be given some class time to read your novel and work on your
websites, but expect to spend some time outside of class reading as well. You will

• You will complete sections of the outline and cut and paste on a word document.
• All this work will be will be saved and brought to your first ISU conference.

Setting, Characters, Theme etc. (all information collected and organized through
interactive book report)

- Link to website
- Evaluation of the website as an authentic sources that presents and coveys the
author’s life and vision effectively.
60 marks
5) Literary value and recommendation
- Address the three questions that determine literary value.
- Provide recommendations for the sources
20 marks
Key dates:
This ISU assignment will comprise 10% of your final grade in this course.
