Independent Study unit

The goal of this assignment is for the students to explore a variety of works in order to
discern literary value in each. You will examine 3 primary sources that focus on a
similar theme:

1) A classic (modern or otherwise) Novel (see attached list for suggestions or


choose one of your own with teacher’s approval)
2) An internet Website devoted to a prominent literary figure (whose woks focus on
and illuminate your own chosen theme.)
3) A movie that explores your theme.

Begin by choosing a classic novel or play. Once an appropriate theme has been
identified, research and select a website presenting the life and works of a prominent
literary figure who has written extensively about your chosen theme. The course themes
include:
1) Appearance Vs. reality 4) Man’s quest for knowledge
2) Innocence and experience 5) Social Justice
3) Passion Vs. reason 6) Discrimination and racism.

You may choose from these, however you are not limited to these themes. Possible
alternatives could include war, love, friendship, betrayal etc.

Once you have read your novel and examined your other sources you will ponder upon
and determine the answer to the following questions:

1) Does the source merely entertain


2) Does the source entertain as well as provide valuable information?
3) Does this source entertain, inform and provide a new insight and perspective?
Conference and Process work

• At the first ISU conference with your teacher, you will be asked to justify your

choice of primary sources, and classification of each under your chosen theme.

• You will be given some class time to read your novel and work on your

websites, but expect to spend some time outside of class reading as well. You will

work on your novel study through the interactive novel outline at –

• You will complete sections of the outline and cut and paste on a word document.

Save and back up this file at all times.

• All this work will be will be saved and brought to your first ISU conference.

• Please plan to have read your entire novel

• Examined the website and

• Viewed your movie by this conference.


Culminating Task
You will be expected to create a website that for your final assignment for this ISU. It
will demonstrate the various thematic connections in the three sources that you have
explored. This website will have the following links/pages. Please use Microsoft
FrontPage to create your site.

1). Overview:

- A brief overview of your theme and its relevance in broader socio-cultural


contexts..
- How do your novel, movie and website present it with a fresh/interesting insight.
20 marks

2) Novel

- Provide essential information about the contents of the novel Such as Plot,
Setting, Characters, Theme etc. (all information collected and organized through
interactive book report)

3) Movie

- Brief summary of the story


- Characters
- Presentation of the theme through this medium

4) Website:

- Link to website
- Evaluation of the website as an authentic sources that presents and coveys the
author’s life and vision effectively.
60 marks
5) Literary value and recommendation
- Address the three questions that determine literary value.
- Provide recommendations for the sources

20 marks

2) Reading periods (From…………to……) 9th, 16th, 23rd

3) 1st Student Teacher conference March 2nd

4) First draft of the website design.

5) 2nd Student Teacher conference

6) Rough draft of the contents of the website 20th

7) Editing the contents 21th, 22nd, 23rd

8) Final submissions 4th May

This ISU assignment will comprise 10% of your final grade in this course.
