Background
The joint Aerospace Industrial Strategy Lifting
Off. included the commitment to create an
Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI).
As an early part of the ATIs programme the
Department for Business, Innovation and Skills
(BIS) is to invest, through the Technology
Strategy Board, up to 25m in collaborative
research and development for proposals
that support the delivery of the priorities
set out in the strategy.
Launched as a TSB CR&D competition
during the Le Bourget airshow.

ATI Competition 2013 in Summary

Aerospace Industrial Strategy: advancing technology
capability
A TSB competition for collaborative R&D projects
offering up to 25M of grant fully funded by BIS
- Single stage CR&D competition
- Project size: 2M - 10M
- Opened September 16
th

- Registration CLOSES November 20
th

- Call CLOSES November 27
th

- Business led & collaborative
- Covering the breadth of ATI technology objectives

Aims of the Competition:
are the aims of the Aerospace Industrial Strategy
To create UK economic growth in the aerospace sector from
major programmes, including the next generation of aircraft,
fixed wing and rotary wing, and new variants of existing
platforms.

To deliver high-potential solutions covering component or
systems technologies across whole civil aerospace front
aerodynamics, aero-structures, propulsion and systems.

To stimulate businesses in the UK aerospace supply chain to
work with OEM and also with academia to propose innovative
projects
Technical Scope Summary
The technical scope of the competition has been determined
through consultation with the AGP Technology Working Group, the
ATI working group and the AAD KTN.

In advance of the establishment of the ATI these consultations have
been led by BIS and the AAD KTN. BIS have further endorsed the
scope as being compliant with the immediate aims of the ATI.

Covers component or systems technologies across the key areas in
which UK must stay at the leading edge aerodynamics, materials
and aerostructures, propulsion, systems & equipment and helicopter
technologies.

Topics to be Addressed

effective high rate manufacture
Metallic technologies for manufacture, e.g. additive layer manufacture
Advanced and large scale metrology for rapid automated manufacture
Technologies for increasing rate of manufacture and for manufacturing
capacity
Information and data in design, manufacture and MRO.

Topics to be Addressed 2
Technologies for close tolerance manufacture (especially for wing surfaces
to promote laminar flow)
Technologies for green manufacture, including sustainable/recyclable
materials
Aero-engine component technologies, including high strength nickel alloy
development and manufacture, turbo machinery technologies, sealing,
cooling.

Helicopter technologies particularly related to rotor aerodynamics, drive
train efficiency, fly-by-wire systems and vibration
Advanced technologies for wings, including novel aircraft configurations and
advanced tilt-rotor technologies, including novel wing, prop-rotor and hub
configurations.

Funding Allocation and Project Details
BIS has allocated up to 25m to fund collaborative R&D
projects that aligned to the Aerospace Industrial strategy.
Projects must be business-led and collaborative.
We are primarily seeking to fund industrial research, from TRL
3 up to TRL5/6.
Business partners attracting up to 50% public funding for their
project costs (60% for SMEs).
Collaboration with academic partners is encouraged up to a
limit of 30% of the total project cost.
A clear route to exploitation must be be visible.
Participation of system/platform integrators is encouraged

Funding Allocation and Project Details
We expect most projects to range in total size from 2m to (in
exceptional cases) 10m.
Note: Applicants considering proposals close to this upper limit should
contact TSB directly before making their application.
Projects should last around three years.
Successful project participants can attract grant funding towards
their eligible project costs.
Applications will be assessed on individual merit in a competition
based on quality of application.
The TSB reserves the right to adopt a portfolio approach to
ensure coverage.
