Stages of the Lesson
1. Warm-up:
The teacher checks if there are any absent students.
Homework will be orally checked with the whole class. (exercise: 2/69)

2. Lead-in:
The teacher will introduce the aim of the lesson to the students.
The teacher will stick on the blackboard three pictures (a computer, a mobile phone, and a
TV.) Then she will ask the students to think and rank the objects according to the frequency
they use them on regular basis. They will give 1 for the object they use most frequently, and
3 for the less used one. Then they will report their choices to the teacher, who will put the
number of students who voted for each object.
The teacher will ask the students to imagine their life without their most important object.
Some of the students will be asked to tell their ideas aloud.
The teacher will write the title of the lesson on the blackboard and the students into their
notebooks: Its your call- Reading
Then in pairs the students must do exercise 1/72. They have to discuss the given questions.
The teacher will walk around the class listening and encouraging the students. There will be a
time limit. The students answers will be orally and randomly checked.

3. Reading:
a. Pre-reading: the teacher will start a short discussion with the students who will
have to think about the advantages and disadvantages of text messaging and
emailing, and to compare them to face-to-face communication.

b. While-reading: individually the students will have to read the text in exercise 3,
and choose from the sentences A-H the one which best fits each gap (1-7). Of
course, if there are any unknown words, the students may ask their teacher or
classmates to explain them. Once the students have finished reading and
matching, they will randomly read aloud the text and say their answers.

c. After reading: the teacher asks the students if they agree with the text, and with
Annabelles opinion, according to which text messaging is encouraging bad habits
of spelling and grammar, and what other problems can they identify about this.

4. Presentation:
The teacher will write on the blackboard two sentences:
The man walks the dog every morning.
The dog is walked every morning by the man.
Now the students are asked to analyze these two sentences and say the differences there
are between them. Using the information given by the students, the teacher with the
students help, will write the rules of forming the Passive Voice.
1) Identify the subject
2) Identify the verb and its tense
3) Identify the object
4) Make the object the subject of the passive sentence
5) Put the verb to be in the identified tense
6) Put the main verb in the past form (+ed/ 3
rd
)
7) Write the rest of the words
8) Make the subject of the active voice the object of the passive voice,
and precede it by BY.
! Note: the change of the pronoun from the Nominative to the
Accusative and vice-versa.
I-me, you-you, he-him, she-her, it-its, we-us, they-them.
5. Controlled practice:
In groups of 4 the students will be handed in some worksheets with some sentences in the
Active Voice, which they will have to turn into the Passive Voice. Once the students have
finished the sentences, they will come at the blackboard and write each correct
transformation, explaining their choice. The other students will correct their sentences.

6. Less- controlled practice:
In groups of 4, the students will be given a newspaper headline, which they will have to
write as full sentences, using the passive where possible. They may also continue the stories
to make a complete news bulletin.
Mobiles banned in class
Man abducted by aliens
Woman hit by a comet
Whale seen in the Nile
Dog taught to drive
Cure for cancer
Trapped girl saved
Once they have finished, each group will choose a leader who will read the story to the rest
of the class.

If the time allows it, another speaking activity will take place. As Saint
Valentines Day has just passed, the students will be handed some id cards.
They will be given four cards, and they must fill in the details. The teacher will
collect the cards, and eight of the students will be asked to form 4 pairs who
will sit in the four corners of the class. They will be the marriage bureau. The
remaining students are called the hopefuls. They will be given one card. They
must imagine they are the people on the card and they are looking for a
partner for Saint Valentines Day. The rest of the cards will be given to the
marriage bureau. The hopefuls must visit the marriage bureau, describing
themselves and what they are looking for, until they are offered someone
suitable. The students, who find a partner, must take a sit and think about the
reasons they chose that partner. After each student finds a perfect match,
they must present it to the class.

7. Feedback:
The teacher asks a few questions about the passive to check the students understanding.
Homework, the students will get a worksheet taken from the language maximiser.
