backpackers wanted to trek out to Quarry Rock.
Quarry Rock is in Deep Cove, North Vancouver
and is about 1.5 hours each way from the
Samesun Backpackers in Vancouver.

April you can book a touring day for cheap where
you get 2 touring guides, 1 Cat trip to the top of the
mountain and access to unbelievable terrain. One

Included within these pages are listings of accommodations situated in almost
every major city in Canada and many smaller communities too. Backpackers
Hostels Canada, also known as Auberges Backpackers Canada began in
August 1990 with only ten Canadian hostels and has grown since that date to
include over 140 accommodations spanning the distance from St. John's to
Haida Gwaii, in every province of Canada (except Saskatchewan(!)) and
including the Yukon. The information found on , and in
this booklet has been received directly from each hostel or accommodation.
We include not only basic information about each hostel, but also some
activities that you can do in each listed community. We also list a number of
fun events across Canada with hopes that some might coincide with your trip!
In some cases, the listed accommodation is not a hostel per se, but is often a
university or college residence, often catering to summer travellers and
providing a superb alternative accommodation. Many cater to large groups as
well. We also include some campgrounds which offer only rustic
accommodations or place to pitch your tent. The great majority of the listings in
our network however are backpacker hostels in the true sense. We strive to
give you, our guest, much greater choice for budget accommodations in more
locations than ever before.
We hope that this booklet will help you find your next backpacker hostel. We
know that you will meet wonderful and interesting people from many different
places on the globe, and we wish that you will have, or are having a safe and
enjoyable trip. Visit for more information about the

the printing of this booklet.

The BHC mission statement describes a hostel : It's a friendly,
warm, healthy and safe place for budget travellers.
Prices generally range from $22.00 to $35.00 (plus applicable taxes)
per person per night. Backpacker hostels are each unique but
typically offer dorm bed accommodation and shared facilities.
Alternatively, many hostels offer private sleeping quarters as well.
Visit , to compare facilities. Some include
breakfast, WIFI, or tours in the price. At every hostel you will meet
great people and will share lasting memories. This is one of the
great allures of hostels. As well, the host provides genuine
hospitality and is knowledgeable about what to see or do in the area.
And of course the price is right!
If you have had a particularly negative experience at a hostel, please
contact us at , because the experience of the
traveller is important to us. Alternatively if you have something
positive to say about an accommodation that has become dear to
your heart in the course of your travels, please let us know.

This photo was taken by Flavien Mabit, owner of the
Bayview Garden Hostel in Sandspit, Haida Gwaii, in an
inlet on Graham Island called Juskatla Inlet.
Tucked away at a bottom of a cliff was a
tiny cove, almost completely shut off
from the larger inlet, only connected to
it by a narrow channel with stronger
currents. In the cove, everything was
quiet, no wind, no ripples, only the
sound of the forest and a very peaceful
sense of belonging to the place. Nobody
felt like breaking the spell, so we all
kept silent, just drifting into the cove.

My Stay at Up the Creek Backpackers
I recently left a 30 year career in the hotel industry working in management positions with two luxury
and ultra-luxury brands. My trip was to unwind and clear my head before beginning another career and
the last thing that I wanted to do is stay in a hotel. It would link me back to my time as a road warrior or
working at hotels. I wanted to find places to stay that provide great experiences and Up the Creek
Backpackers B&B did a wonderful job.
Martin has created a terrific hybrid of hostel and B&B. Two large rooms have bunk beds and there is a
single room and really cool small cabin in the back yard. Key to know is that the house is immaculate
and and beautifully decorated with tasteful colors and incredibly comfortable sitting areas.
This is Martin's home and contains much warmth. One of my favorite memories was sitting at their large
kitchen table and eating dinner, while Martin helped his son with his homework. There was a gentle
bond between the two that gives terrific energy to the place.
I can find traditional B&B's kind of stuffy and often contrived - working hard to create an environment.
Up the Creek is natural. The combination of younger travelers staying in the dorm rooms with older
travelers in the singles really works. It makes for great conversation and light feeling.
I loved my experience at Up the Creek and highly recommend it.

Every day around 6:00pm, YWCA Hotel Vancouver kitchens
come alive with the sound of many languages and the aroma of
different dishes from around the world.
My wife and I use the seventh-floor kitchen regularly," says
Umar, a hotel guest from Pakistan. For them, the kitchen is not
just about cooking food, it's also a relaxing gathering place.

Awestruck by the Northern Lights

Hostel In Churchill Manitoba
Growing up just north of Winnipeg I've had the great fortune of
seeing the Aurora Borealis (a.k.a. Northern Lights) streak
across the sky numerous times. Having been mesmerized by
them on more than one occasion I thought I knew what it was
like to experience the Northern Lights. That is, until I saw them
in Churchill, Manitoba. After my first visit to this remote
community in northern Manitoba I quickly realized why it ranks
as one of the top three places in the world to see the aurora.
Walking back from dinner one night, I noticed a handful of my
housemates from the Tundra Inn Hostel in the front yard,
looking up at the sky. Following their gaze up, I stood frozen in
the middle of the street as the sky came alive. I quickly came to
realize that all the years when I had been awestruck by the
Lights in Southern Manitoba I had no idea what it really meant
to experience them.
I saw a sky filled with bright green and hints of reds and purple
that danced across the horizon. At times the bands of light
were everywhere and I found it hard to figure out where to look
first. This was what brought my fellow travelers and I to
Churchill but I'm not sure we could have ever imagined this is
what the lights would be like. More than just mesmerizing the
experience becomes one of those moments where you are
truly humbled by the wonder of nature.

Norris Point Hostel during the summer sometimes has
impromptu "Cottage Concerts" in the studio room on the
main floor of the hostel. Guests who are tired from hiking
all day can relax in the studio with refreshments and
enjoy the music! Alternatively, the concerts may occur
elsewhere at the hostel, as you can see with the photo of

Jiggs Dinner

Sometimes it's hard to pinpoint the moment of inception; that moment when you hear
something, your brain latches on to it and soon enough, it has to be carried out.
Perhaps it was the absence of seafood that I thought I would be feasting on by the
bucket load before I came out here [to Newfoundland], or an honourable mention in a
story told by a passing traveller, or maybe it was plain restlessness, whatever the case
a few days ago, I went on a quest to find a place that served a traditional Newfie meal:
Jiggs Dinner.
Jiggs Dinner is a meal usually eaten on Sunday in Newfoundland. It's simple to prepare
consisting of a few basic ingredients: salted beef (corned beef to mainlanders),
cabbage, potatoes, carrots and turnips. I didn't know this when I asked Libby if she
knew of any restaurants in the area that serve it on a Monday afternoon. Before I could
figure out what the meal consisted of, she was on the phone calling up what seemed to
be all the local restaurants from Trinity to Bonavista asking if they served it. While I
waited to see what the outcome would be, I called into the common room to figure out
what I had become so curious to try. Kent, a Kayak guide and Newfoundlander born
and raised, replied. His reply came in the form a few quick questions and our
conversation went a little something like this:
Do you like potatoes? Sure do. Do you like Carrots? Yeah, man. Salted Beef?
Obviously. What about turnips and Cabbage? Why not? Well there ya go.
After this brief exchange, I found out that aside from having few ingredients, it was
really simple to make. Good news, as it turned out no restaurant in the area served it. If
I was to try this Newfoundland dish, I was going to have to make it myself. After a quick
lunch at the cozy coffee shop, the Two Whales, three of us set out to pick up ingredients
at the nearest grocery store.
If I had known how easy it was to make and make a lot of, setting out for ingredients
would have been my first move. Once you have your ingredients, (we used the items I
listed above) I prepared it as follows:
1. Soak your salted beef and change the water multiple times. Salted Beef is salty. Real
salty. Jiggs Dinner is high in sodium when prepared correctly, when it isn't done properly
it can be an unpleasant experience.
2. Peel and cut up your vegetables.
3. Fill a big pot with enough water to cover your ingredients.
4. Place all ingredients in the water, excluding the potatoes. They'll get mushy if you put
them in too soon. I put them in with about an hour left on the clock.
5. Bring water to a slow boil and leave it for 2 and a half hours or so.
6. Pick out your meat and vegetables.
7. Drain broth, leaving some to turn into gravy if you wish.
A brief experiment with moss graffiti, a bike ride to the waterfall, and a quick check on
the beehive later, it was done. I scooped Kent and myself a serving, pulled up a chair
and chowed down.
So this is Jiggs Dinner. Not bad.

base for hiking the island trails. One can also visit the pony sanctuary
on a nearby island. David, owner of the Pink House is known to be a
warm and friendly host!

Grenfell Campus of Memorial University, in Cornerbrook
Newfoundland located just outside of Gros Morne National Park.
We were hanging out on the beach and a friend of
mine had the courage to get in the cold ocean when
she saw the moose hanging in the woods. We were
able to observe him for over an hour. It was very
impressive.

Nanbijou, is a good reason by itself to come to Thunder
Bay. One can see the Giant clearly from the Thunder
Bay North Side downtown. This awesome view is

working with hostels for over 20 years and loves the atmosphere, and
meeting guests from all over the world. Shane gained ownership of the
hostel in July 2013. Since purchasing the hostel, he has done touch-ups on
the deck and will be this summer putting a new roof on the hostel this
summer.. Dawn Swift is the FANTASTIC manager and Shane will be there
most weekends. Come in for a coffee anytime and enjoy Shane playing the

"20 years ago, I made a world trip. I wanted to discover other landscapes, other
cultures, other peoples, other realities, other languages... Those years fed my
soul. When traveling, I loved spending time with locals: I wanted to live like
them, eat like them and fell their world the way they felt it. When I came back to
Montreal - at 25 years old - I made a big decision: buy a building and open
a...hostel. That was a way for me to keep meeting people from everywhere, and
learn new realities every single day. Twenty years later, no regrets. I still live in
my hostel and I welcome people from all around the world. I feel happy when i
hear my children speaking Quebecer, Senegalese, English...I realize how
lucky they are to live in a place where they always travel among different
cultures. I love my home, I love my family, I love my job and I hope I will keep
receiving the whole world at home so I will always be culturally and
humanly...rich."
Il y a 20 ans de cela, je dcidai de faire le tour du monde. J'avais le
dsir de voir de nouveaux paysages, de nouvelles cultures, de nouvelles
personnes, d'autres ralits et des langues diffrentes. Ces annes voyager
m'ont combl de bonheur et ont donn un sens nouveau ma vie; le voyage
m'a ouvert aux autres. Partout o j'allais, je ctoyais les populations locales, je
mangeais comme eux, j'adoptais leur rythme de vie. mon retour Montral,
je pris une grande dcision, celle d'ouvrir ma propre auberge de jeunesse.
J'avais alors 25 ans. Cela tait une faon pour moi de continuer voyager. 20
ans se sont coules depuis et je n'ai aucun regret. Je vis dans mon auberge,
j'accueille des citoyens en provenance de tous les continents. Je suis heureux
d'entendre mes enfants parler le franais, le wolof et l'anglais. Je ralise quel
point ils sont choys de ctoyer en permanence diffrentes cultures, le monde
vient eux! J'aime mon travail, il me procure beaucoup de bonheur et me
permet d'tre un homme culturellement et humainement .riche.

The best words can only be said about Auberge du in Pointe A La
Garde, Quebec near the New Brunwick border. This is truly an amazing place,
and is in fact, an actual castle. Visit for more photos.
The area is beautiful. The castle is amazing. The sleep is very comfortable.
The price is low. Do NOT leave Quebec without visiting this hostel! Wow~!!
