Steps: Using the Distributive Property

1. Multiply the outside value to each to each of the inside terms

a. Careful: Most mistakes occur when you forget to distribute to every inside term!

2. Rewrite the expression after distributing through

a. Remember that we always keep the (+) or (-) sign that is in front of the number

3. Combine like terms if necessary; simplify

[4]

Guided Practice

Multiply the outside term with each of the inside terms. Simplify the expressions. Circle or
box your answer.
1. 7(3x + 5) 2. 4(6a 2)

3. -6(b + 3)

4. -4(2w + 9) 5. 9(v + 8)

6. 2(7 8x)

7. -5(3p + 6) 8. -8(-4m 2)

Keep In Mind!

When distributing into just a variable
without a coefficient, remember that
you will multiply by one.

There is no wrong way to write
your answer. 3x + 2 is just as
correct as 2 + 3x. However in
higher math, we order them
with the variable first and
constant last.

Partner Practice

Work on the problems below with your partner(s). Identify the constant term(s) and variable
term(s). Simplify the expression. Circle or box your answer.

*If you finish early, go back and study the vocabulary words. Quiz your partner.

1. 4(3w + 8) 2. 3(6 7q)

3. -2(6 + 5m) 4. 8(7n 1)

5. 5(a + 3) + 7 6. 4(4 + 3t) + 9t

7. 8(3x + 3) + 7 8. -2(5 + u) u

9. 6(n 5) 3n + 1 10. -7(2b 6) + 5b + 2

Combining Like Terms After Distributing

Multiply the outside term with each of the inside terms. Simplify the expressions.
Ex. 5(2x + 4) + 7x

Step 1: 10x + 20 + 7x

Step 2: 10x, 7x and 20

Simplify: 17x + 20

1. 4(2n + 3) + 8 2. 3(5 + x) + 2x

3. 7(a + 6) + 9a + 7 4. 2(4g + 7) + 3(3 + 9g)

Careful!

What went wrong with the example below?

5(2x + 3) = 10x + 3
