Learn to play Blues Piano Piano beginner to intermediate.

WELCOME

Welcome to Learn to play Jazz/Blues piano, I have written 2 books in this series, This is the
first Beginner to Intermediate. As a working gigging jazz pianist I would like to share with you
what and how I have learnt along the way.

This ebook wants to get under your finger tips THE BLUES! The main emphasis is on the
tunes as when you perform this is what the listener wants to hear and enjoy.


HOW TO PRACTICE

To many people the word Practicing can conquer up many negative attachments, for me it
was always as a kid just playing scales and i always felt daunted by that word,
However as i got older i realised the key to practicing is:

-You have to design it to be fun.
- You have to know what the goal is and have a mental map of how to get there, no matter
how easy or difficult the piece/scale/exercise or whatever it is you are trying to master.

- Forget the word practice and try to mentally use the word "playing" everytime you think
about sitting behind the piano to learn something you dont know how to do.
- Approach playing and advancing at the piano from different angles. Mainly work on tunes,
but combine this with some theory and exercise routines and over a short period of time this
will
all come to together and you will be a well rounded jazz blues pianist.



NOWS THE TIME


We are going to start with a very simple blues, This blues was composed by Charlie parker,
but i have made the arrangement very simple using in the left hand just root 7ths and 3rds,
but before we start i first i would just like to explain what a root 3rd and 7th is.

The first chord F7 means that the root (the bass note in the harmony) is the F, all we have to
do to find the seventh is count up the dominate scale (7 chords are called dominant). And the
same for the 3rd just count up from the root and we see that A is the 3rd of F7

As a solo blues pianist we will rely a lot on Root/7ths / and thirds in the left hand. This
basically spells out the quality of the harmony to the listener. Lets take a look at the notation
for the whole piece to get an idea of where the root and sevenths appear in my arrangement
and also listen to the audio to get a feel of the sound of a seventh chord.

SWING RYTHMS EXPLAINED

You might be wondering "if those are quavers (8th notes) why dosnt it sound straight and
even.

Well in jazz and blues quavers are mainly swung, to illustrate, tap your foot and on every
beat/tap of the foot say "1 2 3"

Now these are triplets , in a swung rhythm we only play the 1 and the 3 of the triplet and thats
how we get a swing rhythm, try to get faster so you get a good feel.



WATERMELON MAN

This next tune is by Herbie Hancock, really worth checking out the original and also the
Michel Camilo version is excellent.

Here the bass rolls through the tune and the right hand plays melody and comps the chords
underneath.

ERIKAS BLUES


We are going to look at a tune in a kind of "bar barrel"/honky tonk style of playing the piano.

I have started with a 1 bar introduction and then it goes straight in to the 12 bar blues
progression, the first time round we are just setting up a groove, then, on the 2nd time around we
are going to introduce the melody, the left hand continues to play the same groove underneath
the right hand.
On the 3rd time around we are going to solo. Soloing in jazz and blues means improvising, this
can be a daunting thought for the beginner, "how do i do that and make it sound good??" well, the
trick is to have what we call a "bag of tricks" within this bag is your armoury of ideas runs/licks
licks/riffs means melodic ideas, all these will come out in the solo of a jazz or blues tune. Unlike
classical or written music jazz blues allows you to express yourself spontaneously, This is all
done within the frame work of a tune, which has form and structure. Ok lets have a look and listen:

The Next tune is a Minor Blues and differs from the conventional 12 bar blues format.
The emphasis is still stong again with the 3rds and 7ths, however the chords are minor,
95% of funk and groove music is also in the minor key and not in the dominant like
the blues.

I have tried to arrange the left hand to have movement and have used
substitute chords, i.e like Dm over the usual Cm7,

By the great Thelonious Monk, this tune is a favourite of mine and probably the most
difficult arrangement here to play (especially the solo).
Check out the Jazz Chords on the Introduction, Ive tried to make a lot of harmonic
variation in this arrangement. Also with the Solo try to internalise the licks.
