The Backstory
Over Christmas and New Year 2009/2010, I took time off from the online world shut my shos and did
almost no !lo" osts !e#ause there was lots of stuff "oin" on in the $outside% world&
I had 'ust "otten married in late (etem!er when my !oss told me he wanted to sell the !usiness I was
mana"in", so I finished my 'o!) we moved house in with my arents and de#ided to "o travellin")
!ou"ht a van and #onverted it from an emty shell to a #amervan) and I also had a !i" run of dental
ro!lems* in short, I was really !usy and had no time +or ener"y, for my !usiness& In fa#t, as my
hus!and and I are "oin" travellin" around -ustralia this year, I had de#ided to "ive it u alto"ether until I
"ot home&
.y how thin"s have #han"ed/
0ro!lems with the van me#hani#s arose on#e we had finished the #onversion, and I suddenly found
myself with a lot of time, and nothin" to do, while this was "ettin" fi1ed&
-nyone who knows me knows that a !ored 2ess is a #ranky 2ess, so I de#ided to oen my shos !a#k u, and try to sell a few thin"s
!efore we left on our holiday&
3ell, it%s now a month later, and we are a!out to leave& -nd I%m takin" my !usiness with me& I love it, and I love my !lo", and I%ve
de#ided to make a real "o at it this year&
What Ive Achieved
Okay, so now to the nitty "ritty& (in#e I re4oened my shos, whi#h I !elieve was on around the 5th of .ar#h, 2010
+6tsy,.adeIt, (uermarket, and 'ust the other day, my own store,, until today +the 12th of -ril as I%m writin" this, I have had a total of
70 sales in 88 days&
9or the 6tsians out there, 22 of those were on 6tsy& Now, this was durin" a time of turmoil on 6tsy where many eole were #laimin"
that their views and sales have drasti#ally redu#ed due to an error with :oo"le inde1in" their results&
(o that%s a total of 70 sales in 88 days& 3eekends tend to !e ;uieter in -ril +6aster weekend ese#ially,&
<o !e honest, I%ve a#tually ama=ed myself at how many sales I%ve made over this time& 6very sin"le time I "et a sale it%s a !i" thrill,
and I #la my hands in e1#itement/
So, how did I do it?
I%m sorry to tell you, !ut the simle answer is throu"h sheer& hard& !loody& work& 9or almost all of that time I have sent almost all day
from when I "et u around 9410 to when I "o to !ed at around 1241 workin"& >owever, when your work is your assion, this isn%t
su#h a diffi#ult thin"& ?ut you%ll have to ut in as many hours as you #an/
- ma'ority of that time has !een sent on the #omuter, !ut I have of #ourse !een makin" rodu#ts too !oth my sold rodu#ts and a
slew of new ones&
I have !lo""ed, tweeted, listed, networked, fli#kr%d, written on forums, fa#e!ooked*& I #ould "o on& In fa#t, I will, in detail /

1. Make Stuff
If you%re a handmade !usiness erson, this is your #ore !usiness& If you%re not makin" stuff,
you don%t have a !usiness/
I know that I have so many ideas a!out new thin"s to #reate& -nd if I don%t "et to #reate
them almost every day, I tend to start "ettin" a leeetle !it frustrated&
-s someone tryin" to !e noti#ed online, you need to !e re"ularly makin" new rodu#ts so
you%re fresh, you%ve always "ot somethin" new for your #ustomers to #he#k out and so
you%ve "ot somethin" to talk a!out/ I don%t know a!out you, !ut if someone was #onstantly
romotin" the same old thin" over and over to me, it would "et really old real fast& ?ut if I
know of or follow a sho I love, I like to #he#k out the new thin"s they%re makin"/
I tend to make one or two new thin"s ea#h day sometimes I won%t make anythin"& ?ut I do
kee makin" thin"s regularly 4 I think that%s the key& I kee hoto"rahin", editin" my hotos, and listin" new thin"s refera!ly at
least ON6 thin" ea#h day& I%ve found it%s helful to have a !a#klo" of items made and ready to list, so that on slow days or eriods I
still have somethin" new to share& It #an !e @6-AAY hard to hold of listin" it all at on#e, thou"h/
On venues like 6tsy and .adeIt this is arti#ularly imortant, as the sear#h results are in reverse #hronolo"i#al order& If you don%t add
new rodu#ts +or at least, in the #ase of 6tsy, renew a thin" or two every day or so, you "et !uried in the sear#h results&
I%m retty sure that most of my .adeIt sales have #ome from that site%s sear#h, as I do very little romotin" of that store, !ut am
findin" reasona!ly #onsistent sales& It is still small enou"h that my work stays in the first or at least the first two or three sear#h
a"es for a few days& 6tsy is another story I don%t really rely on "ettin" found in the sear#h over there very mu#h at all&
2. Tweet U a Stor!
I BAOC6B twitter& It is !y far my most su##essful romotional tool& >owever, I don%t 'ust sam my followers with
links& -lso, when I "ot !a#k into this, I already had a!out 1,D00 followers from last year who hadn%t !ooted me, so
I was startin" with a "ood !ase& It will take time and tweetin" to "et to that level&
I use twitter !e#ause I en'oy it/ I use <weetEe#k, and have it runnin" on my deskto all the time& 3henever I%m
waitin" for a a"e to load, or 'ust every D410 minutes or so, I%ll have a ;ui#k eek to see what twees are u to& I
tweet retty re"ularly when I%m on the #omuter&
3hat a!outF 3ell, I%ll tweet a!out what I%m thinkin", doin", #ool sites I%m readin"/lookin" at, funny thin"s that haen durin" the day,
my !lo" osts* I @< +re4tweet, thin"s on twitter I like, I%ll #hat to the friends I%ve made and resond to any tweets Gme* and I%ll
throw a romotional link in there every on#e in a while&

tweet it& If I have somethin" se#ial "oin" on +sale or whatnot, I%ll tweet it& 3hen I sell and re4list somethin", I%ll tweet it&

the minority& In fa#t, so#ial media as a whole is vital to doin" !usiness online these days&

their shos& <hey and other sites like Craftoolis and (tatsy 4 offer advertisin" to 6tsians at reasona!le rates& I have 'ust the other
week advertised with Craft#ult, and I am "oin" to do so a"ain& 9or me, the #ost is reasona!le for the num!er of views and hearts you
"et& I look at it as another "ood form of e1osure for my sho&
(ome ar"ue that advertisin" there is a waste, !e#ause only other 6tsy sellers will see my ads& 3ell, to !e honest, at least half of my
sales have !een to other 6tsians* and sin#e they are eole who value handmade, they are my tar"et market/
?lo"s 4 a"ain, !usy, oular !lo"s will often offer aid advertisin" at a "ood rate& I%m ;uite sele#tive with this, as I don%t have oodles of
advertisin" money to throw around, !ut I have !ou"ht a few ads on !lo"s&
I #hoose to ut ads for my !lo" on these sites, rather than my sho* !e#ause of my delusion as a!ove, and also !e#ause of my
!elief that eole refer to !uy from someone they know and trust& 0eole are "oin" to "et to know me mu#h more thorou"hly
