ThenovelwonthePulitzerPrize
[PulitzerPrize:Prizesforliterature,
namedafterJosephPulitzer,an
Americannewspaperpublisherwho
wasborninHungaryin1847.],America'stopliteraryaward,in
1961.Itwasadaptedforthestageandwasalsomadeintoa
successfulfilm.YetHarperLeedidnotwriteanymorenovels.
ShereturnedtoMonroeville.Nowinher80s,shestilllivesthere
today.

America.Theyhadnorightsandwereseenbytheirwhite
ownersaslittlemorethananimalsormachines.
Evenaftertheabolitionofslaveryin1865,theblackswerestill
almostpowerless.Thewhiteshadtoomuchtolosetoallow
blacksanyrights.Nothingwasequal:blackshadtheworstof
everythingwhilewhiteshadthebest.
Suchwasthehatredofblacksbythewhitesespeciallyduring
theGreatDepressionofthe1930s,whenmoneywastightfor
everyonethatitwascommonforblackstobelynched
[lynching:Executingsomeone(usuallybyhanging)withouta
legaltrial.]orhangedbyamobwellintothe20thcenturyso
therewasgoodreasonforAtticustositoutsidethejailtoprotect
TomRobinsonbeforehistrial.
Segregationandinjustice
Inthe1930s,although50%ofthepopulationofSoutherntowns
wereblack,theyhadnovoteandcouldnotmarrywhites.The
policyofsegregationmeantthatblackshadtohavetheirown
schools,theirownchurches,theirownfootballteams,even
theirowncemeteries.

thecourthouseafterthewhitesandhavetositupinthe

wereaccusedofrapingtwowhitewomenonatrain.
Afteraseriesofbittertrials,fourofthemenwere
sentencedtolongprisonsentenceseventhough
prominentlawyersarguedthattheaccusationswerefalse.
Itwaslaterdiscoveredthatthewomenwerelying.
