BLUEPRINT OF LIFE
Task 1
Examine the following ow charts and identify the type of reproductive technology
illustrated by each. Choose between articial insemination, in vitro fertilisation and
normal reproduction.
Chapter 5 Applications and implications of genetics

1 fertility drugs cause many ova
to ripen at the same time
4 the ova and sperm are mixed;
fertilisation takes place
5 the ova are checked to make
sure that they have been fertilised
and are growing well
6 when the fertilised ova have
divided to form tiny balls of cells,
they are placed in the mothers uterus
2 the ova are collected and
placed in a special solution
in a petri dish
3 a sample of semen
is collected

Task 2
Annotate the ow chart below, using the notes from your textbook, to describe
each stage of the methodology of whole animal cloning.
Task 3
Students should compile a table in which they list the following technologies in
one row:
articial insemination
articial pollination
cloning
and in columns, identify current problems or contentious issues for that technology
and the direction of future biology research needed.
Extension taskBiology skills: validating sources
Read two articles from different sources (one from a scientic journal and one
from a newspapersee the websites below) that report on a similar aspect of
cloning and then determine the validity of the newspaper article as outlined in
the textbook.

story.
Find a copy (try your school library or a public library) and read the full account.
This website presents short notes about the contributors of articles (on Dolly and
cloning) to Time magazine, one of whom, Coupland, states: As for the technology,
since its new, Im willing to give it a chancebut it has such a profound capacity
for abuse. He adds that that has never stopped us before.
