3.MERCHANDISEPROTECTION
The use of Merchandise Protection tags or Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) has demonstrated
effectivenessinreducingtheamountofshrinkageduetotheftinretailenvironments.Thisinvolves
an electronic mechanism placed on either the inside or outside of a product, which requires
deactivation or removal at the point of sale. Failure to remove or deactivate the mechanism

EASRecycleProgram
Myer has a tag recycle program for ShellInk and Apparel EAS hardtags. When hardtags are
removed from merchandise at Point of Sale, tags will be consolidated at stores, then boxed and
returned to Myers tag supplier, Checkpoint. Checkpoint will sort the hardtags, remove those in
poorcondition,andrepacktagsthatareingoodconditioninreadinessforsupplierstoorder.
Myer has made a significant initial investment in shellink hardtags. As the number of hardtags
willdiminish overtimeas tagsaredamaged,lostordisappear,Myerwilltopuptheexistingstock

The recycle model has allowed Myer to negotiate low prices for the shellink and apparel tags
sourced from Checkpoint. The Myer EAS Recycle Program supports Myers commitment to a
sustainablesolution.

4.MINIMALPRODUCTPACKAGING
Myer is a signatory to the Australian Packaging Covenant (APC). The APC is a collaborative
agreement between government and industry designed to minimise the environmental impacts
arising from consumer packaging, and requires Myer to develop and implement action plans
designed to minimise packaging waste across the business. These Floor Ready Standards are
consistentwithanddemonstrateourcommitmenttotheAPC,aswellasourbroadercommitment
toenvironmentalsustainability.
Anunderstandingofthelogisticsinvolvedinsupplyingtheproduct,thewaytheconsumerinteracts
with the product and the merchandise presentation standards are all important considerations
when determining the type of packaging necessary for the item. As such, appropriate packaging
materialswillvarydependingontheproducttypeinquestion,howevertheobjectiveshouldalways
be the same: shipment of the product in packaging that is suitable to protect the item and
maximise handling processes, whilst reducing risks associated with safety, environmental impacts
ofdisposalandinefficienciesintimetopresenttheitemasreadyforsale.

4.1MINIMISEUNNECESSARYOREXCESSIVEPACKAGING
Whenconsideringwhetherexcesspackagingcan be eliminated,thefollowing questionsshouldbe
considered:
Could store handling to prepare the product for sale be avoided by using different
packaging(forexampleshipmentofitemsinanapproveddisplaytray)?
Cantheproductbesuppliedinoneoutercartonwithoutanyadditionalinternalsecondary
packaging?
Ifboxed,isitnecessarytouseadditionallayersofcardboard,paperorplastic?
Ifpackagingisrequired,havematerialsbeenselectedthatmaximiserecyclingopportunity?
Is there the possibility to redesign the consumer or transport packaging without
compromisingquality?
Canindividualcartonsbereplacedwithonelargercartonwithapartitiontoprovide
adequateprotection?

It is the objective of Myer to reduce the following types of packaging to minimise waste where
possible:
Cardboard
Newspaper
BubbleWrap
RubberBands
Foam
ShrinkWrap
AdhesiveTape
ShreddedPaper
SafetyPins
PolyBags
TwistTies
LooseFoam/StyrofoamBeads

4.2TISSUEPAPER
It is a requirement that tissue paper between items is not used unless Myer determines that the
item requires additional protection to prevent damage during transit. The use of tissue paper can
anddoescreateoperationalinefficienciesandsafetyissuesforMyerstores.Theremovaloftissue
paper before merchandise can be placed on the selling floor is time consuming, and creates
additional costs associated with recycling. Further more, if tissue paper is not removed in its
entiretypriortoproductplacementonthesellingfloor,thetissuepapermayfallfromtheproduct
and this creates a safety hazard for both Myer Team Members and consumers due to potential
slipping. As safety is of utmost importance, tissue paper should only be used if determined
absolutelynecessaryafterconsultationwithyourBuyer.

4.3WHENSHOULDTISSUEPAPERBEUSED
Tissuepapercanbeusedwithunpackagedgarments(e.g.onhangersorfoldedontables)when:
Support is required for items such as bras, swimwear and hats to prevent damage during
transit.Tissuepapermaybescrunchedintoaballtoprovideintransitsupport.However,it
would still be preferable that alternate solutions are found to replace the tissue paper in
theseitems(e.g.Lightweightmouldeddomesmadeinrecyclableplastic)
Special effect prints (such as plastisol prints) where there is a potential risk of colours
markingoffintransit
Delicate fabrics that are prone to creasing while in transit and will benefit from using a
materialsuchastissuepaper
Discussed with the relevant buyer and/or Myer Quality Assurance, with written approval
fromMyertopermittheuseoftissuepaper

4.4GARMENTSSOLDASPREPACKAGEDITEMS
Tissuepaper maycontinuetobeused inprepackedapparelitemsthataresoldintheir packaged

associatedwithpackaginge.g.reducepins,plastic,cardandpaperuseasmuchasispossible.

Suppliersmustconsiderthebelowhierarchywhenusingpolybags;
1. None: It is the preference of Myer that no poly bags are used unless necessary to

2. Carton Liner Poly Bag: Carton Liner Poly Bags can be used when the supplier packs
merchandise into cartons and the cartons are receipted into store without needing to

3. MultiUnit Poly Bag: Multi unit poly bags can be used where the use of a carton liner

Outer Carton Packaging refers to the transportation package of an item. When a product is large

5.2OUTERCARTONBOARDGRADE
For fragile merchandise where damage through dropping and falling is more likely (eg ceramic

Merchandise should be packed into outer cartons strong and durable enough to withstand typical
conditions of transport and handling. Cartons should be appropriate for conveyability within
automatedDistributionCentrefacilities.

5.3OUTERCARTONSIZE,WEIGHT&LABELLING
Use the appropriate size carton for the goods that are being packed to ensure a snug fit of goods
inside the carton. Overpacked cartons can cause damages to the items inside when palletized or
stacked underneath other cartons. Too much space left in the carton can contribute to stock

Where the inner carton is comprised of only one selling unit, the outer carton should be

Cartons should be packed evenly on both sides to ensure a balanced load of merchandise

The conveyor system at Myer is designed to handle a range of merchandise cardboard cartons,
which will be received, inducted and sorted into various sortation lanes. The following is a brief
summaryoftheproductsthesystemisdesignedtohandle.

Productdimensionsandweightswillvarybetweenthefollowingparameters

Length Width Height Weight

Minimum 225mm 150mm 100mm 0.5kg
Average 400mm 300mm 250mm 13kg
Maximum *1200mm *550mm 550mm 23kg

Length 505mm 700mm 1000mm 1200mm

Width 505mm 480mm 450mm 400mm

As the cartons are required to travel around the sorter, certain dimensions whencombined

show the maximum combinations of Length and Width that a carton can have without causing
disruption to the sorter. For example, a carton that has a maximum length of 1000mm and a
maximum width of 450mm will travel easily through the sorter. If the maximums were however
