Introduction
It is undeniable that education is the most dominant factor in increasing the literacy level
of citizens. High literacy level measures the education system of a country. The young
generation need to be well educated to prepare them for future challenges. To achieve this, a
comprehensive education system must be prepared and offered (Kusuma, Vasudevan, heng,
!alehudin, Victor, "orsaedatul #a$eah et al., %&&'(. )nglish has been the second language in
*alaysia and is taught as a formal sub$ect in primary and secondary schools. !tudents have
been e+posed to the language since the early ages of five or si+ years until the secondary level
of age seventeen. ,s stated in ,rticle '-%, )nglish has been recognised as a second language
and given due attention (onstitution of *alaysia,'.-/(. To ma0e the sub$ect more interesting
to the students, the education ministry has designed a new module under the 1rimary !chool
urriculum !tandard (K!!#(, which emphasizes on meaningful conte+ts and integration of
language s0ills (2ahagian 1embangunan Kuri0ulum, %&'%(.The new curriculum allows pupils
to learn by doing fun3filled activities. The conte+tualized and purposeful activities suggested
will promote the fun element in language learning and later e4uip pupils with s0ills as to enable
them to further their studies and to enter the wor0ing field.
2. RATIONAL
The 4uestion on how important is )nglish language has long been debated yet seems to
satisfy none. The change of education system from teaching and learning *athematics and
!cience in )nglish to 2ahasa *elayu simply shows that the language is less important. 2ut
eversince teachers have been supported by the 2ahagian 1endidi0an 5uru to further their
studies and most papers they sat are in )nglish the needs for the language has been again seen
as important as 2ahasa *elayu. Teachers also realized that to cope up with the new advanced
technology one has to 0now the language. Teachers need to change according to the need of the
new era.
