Highlights of Animal Biotechnology Centre
Biotechnology centre, Jabalpur, was established by financial assistance of Madhya Pradesh State Agriculture Cooperative Board (Mandi Cess Fund), Bhopal, with the Budget outlay worth of Rs. 7.43 crore in the year 2002-03. Centre is well equipped with most modern equipments like Next Generation Sequencer (ABI), Capillary Sequencer, Flowcytometer with cell sorter (BD), Real Time PCR (ABI), Micromanipulating system (Nikon Narishge), Trinocular Fluorescent Microscope (Leica) etc. The centre has highly qualified, experienced faculty, well trained in modern area of molecular and embryo biotechnology.
Biotechnology Building Objectives of the Centre
1. Human resource development in Animal Biotechnology. 2. Characterization and conservation of Animal Genetic resource using reproductive and molecular techniques. 3. Diagnosis of animal diseases using molecular and ELISA base techniques. 4. Embryo Biotechnology for livestock improvement and conservation through IVF and ETT. 5. Development of clone and transgenic animal for improving the livestock productivity.
Achievement of Animal Biotechnology Centre
Research Projects Undertaken:
Till date the centre has successfully completed 6 research projects funded by DBT, ICAR-NAIP, RKVY etc. The centre has successfully completed two NAIP research projects out of which for one project entitled Development of goat having knocked down myostatin gene through RNA interference technology to enhance the meat production, the centre was recognized as National Lead Centre along with two partners, one from Department of Genetics, IVRI, Bareilly and other from Department of Animal Biotechnology, AAU, Anand, Gujrat. Under this project twenty research papers has been published, mostly in International Journals having high impact factor. One patent entitled Development of cost effective microtools for oocyte enucleation during SCNT embryo production has been submitted vide patent file No. 1762/MUM/2012 dt. 19-06-2012 which is the first patent filed in our university.
Other NAIP project entitled Developmental Potency of Parthenogenetic Goat Embryos, the centre was selected as consortium partner of IVRI. These two projects were based on most advanced molecular and reproductive bio-techniques like RNAi for down regulating myostatin gene and production of stably transfected cell line having knocked down myostatin gene, Microarray for embryonic developmental genes, production of cloned embryos by using two innovative techniques (partial replenishment of ooplasm and use of patented cost effective micro-tools), embryonic gene expression techniques in parthenogenetic, IVF and cloned embryos etc.
Placement
Till date more than 55 M.V.Sc. students have passed out from this centre and 11 of them have been selected for Ph.D. degree in various premier National Institute of India like Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Thiruvananthapuram, Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar, National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal etc. and more than 95% students have been well placed in different government and private industries with good position. FUTURE PROSPECTS:
Publications of research: Students mostly published research papers from their theses work in peer reviewed international journals with high impact factor which will help in getting placement in good national and international institute.
Embryo Biotechnology division of this centre is doing exceeding well during last 5-6 years and many publications have appeared in International Journals. Thus students well trained in embryo production and micromanipulation can easily be absorbed by human IVF laboratories. There are hundreds of IVF laboratories in India and their number is increasing day by day. At present in Madhya Pradesh, which was considered as backward state has more than 10 such laboratories and more than 25 in Central India. Our students are also getting good offers from these laboratories (around average 5-7 lakhs at entry level and upto a package of 20 lakhs within 5-6 years of experience). Hence, our PG students have option to enter in human IVF areas at very good salary with bright future prospects.
Advanced technology based research: The students are getting exhaustive training in molecular techniques related to DNA polymorphism, gene expression, sequencing using automated DNA Sequencer, RNAi and cell culture. Shortly students will get opportunity to work on next generation sequencer for more advanced sequencing. These students, well trained in molecular technique can get placement in different pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries in R&D section.
Transgensis and cloning: Students also get the opportunity to work on transgenesis and cloning techniques which may help in getting placement abroad for Ph.D. and post doc research.
Stem cell Research - We have already initiated work on stem cell techniques and in coming days stem cell research will be intensified hence opening many new avenues of research and placement in such advance technology based industries.
Hence as director of this centre, I can assure that the students will get full opportunity to work in any area of research as per their choice and will get free hand to utilize the most modern and expensive equipments.
