Surface Well Testing

Introduction

Well Testing
A well test is described as the measurement, under controlled conditions, of all factors relating to the production of oil,
gas, and water from a well in a given length of time. Well tests assist in the prediction of production capabilities and
trends. Important decisions, such as production methods, secondary-recovery programs, and developmental drilling are
made from this information. Regulatory bodies may use the test results to establish withdrawl allocations and tax bases.
Well testers have a responsibility to provide complete, accurate data of the reservoir performance.
Since the sole purpose of the testing exercise is to gather information, the essential equipment of the test system are the
means of obtaining:

Temperatures
Pressures
Rates
Volumes
Samples

Surface equipment used to conduct a well test is a unique combination of components that provide well control, well
effluent processing, analysis, and disposal. The exact combination of the components necessary to achieve these goals is
dependent upon well conditions and test requirements.
A vital feature of the surface test equipment (STE) is flexibility. A broad range of equipment types and capacities are
available to provide a system efficiently geared to the customer's requirements.
Well test operations deal with highly flammable fluids at high pressure and temperatures. It is therefore essential
that installation and operation of well test equipment be handled by trained personnel adhering to standard safe
procedures.

Objectives of Surface Well Testing Course

Duration:

Two Weeks

Prerequisites:

Some Well Testing Experience

Description:
Surface Well Testing is an introductory, but thorough, course in surface well testing equipment and procedures. As
such, the course will cover a wide range of topics including the following:

Function and operation of all surface equipment

Fluid measurements (gas, oil and water)
Fluid rate calculations (gas, oil and water)
Proper test procedures and formats
Safety procedures
Awareness of potential testing problems
Field laboratory fluid analysis
Basic reservoir geology
Fundamentals of fluid pressure (hydrostatics, differential)
"Hands-on separator start-up

Upon completion of this course, students will have a better understanding of the equipment and procedures to obtain
a successful test. They will be capable of obtaining the necessary data for report generation. In the long run,
students will be much more effective in aiding the lead test specialist in problem solving and achieving test
objectives.
