Ridge Road Mission and Vision Statement
Raven Way Behavior Goals

Purpose Statement
The purpose of implementing The Raven Way at Ridge Road Middle School is to:
Model and teach positive behavior expectations and reward successful student behaviors.
Create a more positive culture in the entire learning community.
Maintain an environment in which all students can learn.
Empower teachers by providing tools for reinforcement and classroom consequences.

School Goals
Students at Ridge Road Middle School will meet our four expectations:
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
Be Motivated
Be Safe

Teacher and Staff Responsibilities
Teachers and staff will teach, model, and practice each of the behavioral expectations throughout the school year.
Teachers and staff will acknowledge and reward student behaviors that meet our behavior expectations.
Teachers and staff will actively monitor student behavior in classrooms, hallways, restrooms, cafeteria, and all
areas of the school.
Teachers will use the behavior matrix/rubric to correct student behaviors that do not meet the Raven Way
expectations.

THE RAVEN WAY SYNOPSIS

The Raven Way Behavioral Expectations Plan is comprised of several components: 1) Expectations for student behavior (Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be
Motivated, Be Safe) that are clearly communicated, modeled, and reinforced throughout the year via character education (for students and parents) and The
Raven Way posters, announcements, and videos; 2) Tiered consequences for students (including ASD/BSD), as well as guidelines for teacher and
administrative implementation of consequences, parental communication, and data tracking; and 3) Regular positive behavior rewards, including a scheduled
PPA bonus (20 additional minutes every other week) and a quarterly Block Party.

Character Education Lessons
Teachers will be provided with four days of character education lessons that will be taught during the first week of school. The lessons will take approximately
30 minutes and concentrate on each of The Raven Way expectations, as well as general character education. Lessons will be taught as follows:

Day 1 of Character Education:
Respect Lesson 1: All Math teachers present this lesson every block
Responsible Lesson 1: All Language Arts teachers present this lesson every block
Motivation Lesson 1: All Social Studies teachers present this lesson every block
Safety Lesson 1: All Science teachers present this lesson every block
General Lesson 1: All Elective teachers present this lesson every block

Day 2 of Character Education:
Respect Lesson 2: All Math teachers present this lesson every block
Responsible Lesson 2: All Language Arts teachers present this lesson every block
Motivation Lesson 2: All Social Studies teachers present this lesson every block
Safety Lesson 2: All Science teachers present this lesson every block
General Lesson 2: All Elective teachers present this lesson every block

Day 3 of Character Education:
Respect Lesson 3: All Math teachers present this lesson every block
Responsible Lesson 3: All Language Arts teachers present this lesson every block
Motivation Lesson 3: All Social Studies teachers present this lesson every block
Safety Lesson 3: All Science teachers present this lesson every block
General Lesson 3: All Elective teachers present this lesson every block

Day 4 of Character Education:
Respect Lesson 4: All Math teachers present this lesson every block
Responsible Lesson 4: All Language Arts teachers present this lesson every block
Motivation Lesson 4: All Social Studies teachers present this lesson every block
Safety Lesson 4: All Science teachers present this lesson every block
General Lesson 4: All Elective teachers present this lesson every block

Parent Education: Programs for parents and students will be offered periodically throughout the year to assist parent and student understanding of RRMS
expectations and other helpful information.

Reinforcement: The Raven Way Character Education will be reinforced throughout the school year in various ways.

Implementation of Tiered Consequences
RRMS Behavior Offense Tracker: Teachers will use the RRMS Behavior Offense Tracker to document offenses, consequences, and parent contact. The Tracker
will be attached to all administrative referrals (possible exceptions: Yellow Page Offenses, other serious offenses requiring immediate referral).

After- or Before-School Detention (ASD/BSD): School-wide, teacher-managed ASD/BSD (grade level) is an essential element of the tiered consequences.
ASD/BSD sessions are scheduled throughout the year on an alternating basis (ASD one week, BSD the next). Both Core and Elective teachers will conduct
ASD/BSD, with two teachers per session. Each teacher would only have to cover one ASD/BSD session per semester. (If a teacher is unable to cover his or her
scheduled ASD/BSD, that teacher is responsible for finding someone to fill in.)

Administrative Referrals: Teachers will attach the RRMS Tracker to the referral (possible exceptions: Yellow Page Offenses, other serious offenses requiring
immediate referral). Administrators will apply the appropriate consequence, as indicated in the RRMS Rules and Tiered Consequences, and notify the teachers
of said consequence by returning the yellow portion of the referral.

Alternative Suspension Center (ASC): Because ISS is not feasible for RRMS at this time, ASC will be considered as ISS. To avoid class interruption to acquire
current work, ASC packets for each grade-level and department will be available and provided to the student/parent by the Administrator at the time ASC is
assigned.

Positive Behavior Rewards
Another essential element of The Raven Way Plan is regular, positive behavior reinforcement on a school-wide basis.

Bonus PPA: Every other week, students can earn an additional 20 minutes of PPA. Bonus PPA will take place every Friday, with eighth-grade one week and
sixth- and seventh-grade the following week. Each grade will be assigned a designated PPA area. On Bonus PPA days, additional PPA will not take place. Bonus
PPA will be hosted at the grade level by department. This ensures that each teacher will only sacrifice a half-hour of class every two months to offer this reward.
Departments will host the Bonus PPA in the following rotation order (a calendar will be provided):

1
st
Bonus PPA Day: All science teachers will host bonus PPA each block
2
nd
Bonus PPA Day: All social studies teachers will host bonus PPA each block
3
rd
Bonus PPA Day: All language arts teachers will host bonus PPA each block
4
th
Bonus PPA Day: All math teachers will host bonus PPA each block

Quarterly Block Party: In conjunction with the PTSA, a school-wide block party will be held once per quarter for students who have not been suspended or
served two or less ASD/BSDs. The dates and format for the Block Parties will be provided.

Team Rewards: Each Team is encouraged to develop regular Team Rewards. Team Rewards could take place on the alternating Friday when there is no Bonus
PPA. This would provide a weekly positive incentive for all students. Teachers are also encouraged to develop classroom rewards to reinforce positive behavior.

THE RAVEN WAY FAQS BONUS PPA

When does Bonus PPA take place?
Every other week on Fridays (see schedule).

How much time will I lose from the classroom for Bonus PPA?
One Friday every eight weeks you will be responsible for hosting Bonus PPA during each of your blocks. Bonus PPA is 20 minutes; however, because of travel to
and from the classroom to the PPA location, getting drinks, and settling back down in the classroom, its recognized that actual implementation will take about 25 (no
more than 30)minutes from all of your classes on that one day.
Who is responsible for taking the students to Bonus PPA?
Departments (by grade level) will host Bonus PPA one time every other month. For example, 6
th
-7
th
Grade Bonus PPA takes place on September 20
th
. Every sixth-
and seventh-grade science class will spend part of their block participating in Bonus PPA on September 20
th
.

Isnt that an awful lot of students together at one time?
Theoretically, if all students earn Bonus PPA, there could four classes outside at once, and each class would be supervised by a teacher.
Where will Bonus PPA take place?
Ideally, Bonus PPA will be held outside in the designated locations for each grade level. (Sixth- and Eighth-grade will use the soccer field area behind the school;
seventh-grade will use the hilly area to the left of the school parking lot.

What if the weather is bad or I just dont want to go outside for Bonus PPA?
Students do not have to be taken outside for Bonus PPA. Teachers can provide social time in the classroom, play games, or show a movie during the time allotted
for Bonus PPA.
How do we know who earned Bonus PPA?
Simply look at your Offense Tracker data and touch bases with your Team members. Your Team has flexibility in determining how Bonus PPA is earned, and your
Offense Tracker is the documentation for those students who do not earn it.

What about the students who didnt earn Bonus PPA?
Depending upon how many students do not earn Bonus PPA, one or more teacher(s) will supervise those students in a classroom. Students will work on a reflective
piece and/or be given other work to complete during this time.
Is there going to be regular PPA, too?
Regular PPA (ten minutes) will take place Monday through Thursday (in conjunction with lunch and in a similar fashion/location as last yearget with your Team
members/grade level to discuss.) Only students who have earned Bonus PPA will be permitted PPA on Fridays.

THE RAVEN WAY FAQS ASD/BSD
Why is ASD/BSD included as a consequence in The Raven Way?
ASD/BSD is included as a tiered behavioral intervention in order to give students ample opportunities to reflect upon and improve their behavior. It also serves to
alert parents that a written referral for OSS will be the next step, should the behavior not improve. Offering both ASD and BSD allows for both parents and teachers
who have commitments in the afternoon or vice versa to participate.

Why is ASD/BSD set up on a school-wide basis?
Since the entire school is participating in The Raven Way Behavioral Expectations, behavioral interventions/consequences should also be managed school-wide.
Sharing the responsibility for ASD/BSD minimizes the inconvenience to individual teachers, Core teachers, and/or Teams and maximizes the potential for success.
If I dont assign ASD/BSD, why should I participate?
If everyone participates, it will help alleviate the burden on the Teams who have more students who truly need to be assigned ASD/BSD. It will allow the Elective
Team to participate fully in The Raven Way by being able to easily assign ASD/BSD and also take a part in monitoring it. As indicated above, working together
minimizes the impact on individuals, but maximizes the potential for positive impact throughout the school.

How often would I have to monitor ASD/BSD?
Once per semester. (Select either an ASD session or a BSD session.)
I coach sports, so how can I participate?
Sign up for a BSD session.

When does ASD/BSD take place?
Once a week, on Thursdays. After-school-detention begins on September 12 from 4:15 to 5:00 p.m., with BSD following the next Thursday, September 19
th
from
8:00-8:45 a.m. (See schedule.) Students should report to school by 7:55 a.m. for BSD and be picked up at 5 p.m. for ASD.
If ASD/BSD is school-wide by grade level, why is there only one day designated for it (Thursday)?
Designating one day for ASD/BSD helps monitor the security of the building. Grade level administrators, the teachers on ASD/BSD duty, and the front office will be
aware of students who are assigned ASD/BSD on a given Thursday. It allows for flexibility of room assignments depending upon the number of students per grade
level (e.g., if 7
th
grade has 12 students and 8
th
grade has 40 students assigned on a given day, the students can be spread out among the three rooms). It allows for
coverage in the event an assigned teacher has an emergency and cannot meet their commitment.

How come two or three teachers are assigned to each ASD/BSD session?
Assigning more than one teacher per session allows for: 1) Monitoring of students entering the building; 2) Monitoring of student pick-up; 3) Ensuring teacher
coverage in the case of emergency; 4) Provides more than one person to manage a classroom that could have many behaviorally-challenged students; and 5)
Provides security for both the teachers and students.

After Ive assigned ASD/BSD and notified parents, what else do I need to do?
Keep a list of the names/dates of students assigned ASD/BSD. On Mondays before noon, email your list to your grade-level ASD/BSD contact teacher (be sure to
include parent name/number--see Resource Handbook.) The grade-level contact will then compile the grade-level student list and forward to the grade-level
administrator.
When is the deadline to assign ASD/BSD for the next week?
Friday is the last day of the week that students can be assigned ASD/BSD for the following Thursday. This provides weekend time to contact parents, if necessary,
before you forward your ASD/BSD names to your grade-level contact on Monday morning before noon.

Im monitoring ASD/BSD this week. How will I know what students are to report?
The grade-level administrator will provide the on-duty teachers a list of students assigned to ASD/BSD and parent contact information, as well as noting any changes
in room location.
Im monitoring ASD/BSD this week and some students didnt show up. What do I do?
Notify the grade-level administrator of the students who did not show so that OSS can be assigned.

In what rooms will ASD/BSD be held?
Rooms will be assigned and a schedule distributed once teachers have signed up for ASD/BSD. Teachers will need to notify parents of the location of the ASD/BSD
at the time it is assigned, and everyone in the school will be aware of what rooms ASD/BSD is taking place in.
A parent says she cant pick up her child at 5:00. What should I do?
Assign BSD instead.

A parent says he cant get bring his child to school early. What should I do?
Assign ASD instead.
A parent says she cannot bring in her child early or pick up her child late. What do I do?
Document the conversation and write an administrative referral.

A parent says he brought his child in for BSD at 8 a.m. and no one was there to let him in. What do I do?
A teacher or administrator will be at the front door until 8:05. If student does not report by 8:05, the student is considered a no show and the grade level
administrator must be notified.
