Instructor: Dr. Arnold Guerra III, aguerra@occ.cccd.edu, tel. (714) 432-5679.
http://boltzmann.eng.uci.edu/~aguerra/

Course website: http://www.occ.cccd.edu/online/aguerra/

Lecture: Tuesdays & Thursdays.

Laboratory: Lewis Center, Room 206. You must be enrolled in a day laboratory section for the
day lecture, and in the evening laboratory section for the evening lecture. No exceptions!

Office Hours: Before or after class, or by appointment. (Lewis Center, Room 203).

Textbook: There is one required textbook: University Physics, 13th Edition, Volume I, by Hugh
Young & Roger Freedman (Addison Wesley Publishers, 2012). The original authors of this
textbook were Sears & Zemansky. We will only cover chapters 1-16. Also we will be using the
Laboratory Handouts for Physics 185 available online in my website at OCC. An excellent
reference book with lots of solved problems is The Schaums Outline Series book on "College
Physics", 8
th
or 9th Edition, by Frederick Bueche.

Homework: There are two components:
1. The first component uses Mastering Physics for online homework. This component is worth
10% of the final course letter grade. Information about Mastering Physics is available at
http://www.masteringphysics.com. Mastering Physics is a commercial program, and you will
need to pay for access to the program. Carefully read the instructions posted on the course
website for registering with Mastering Physics.

2. The second component of the homework consists of a conventional set of problems. Your
solutions to these homework problems will NOT be collected. Students are expected to do the
homework in a timely manner. Solutions to these homework problems will be posted on the
course website.

No student will be given an extension on the Mastering Physics homework due date. No
exceptions!!!

Experiments: There will be a total of about 10 experiments conducted during the lab time. Each
student will turn in his/her own report of the experiments performed at the time indicated by me.
Each report must follow the guidelines spelled out in my course website.

Quizzes: There will be approximately 8-10 short quizzes. Each quiz will cover 1 chapter. The
quizzes will be given at the beginning of lecture and will last 20 minutes each. The lowest quiz
2
grade will be dropped! Quizzes will be closed book, closed notes, and calculators are allowed.
Cell phone calculators are not allowed during the quizzes. Make-up quizzes will not be given.

Examinations: There will be 2 examinations given throughout the semester AND a final exam.
The exams will be closed book, but calculators are allowed. The use of cell phone calculators is
not allowed during the exams.

Exam 1 Chapters 1 - 5
Exam 2 Chapters 6 - 10
Final Exam Chapters 1 - 16

Make-up exams will be given only if you are badly ill AND bring me a doctors note. If you get
into a car accident on your way to the exam, you must bring me the police report. Make-up
exams must be taken within one week of the missed exam. No exceptions!!!
The course grade will be determined as follows:

Laboratory reports 15%
Quizzes 10%
Online Homework 10%
2 Exams 40% (20% each)
1 Final Exam 25%

Grading Scale:
100% - 89% A
88% - 78% B
77% - 65% C
64% - 55% D
54% - 0% F

Academic Dishonesty: Anyone who gets caught cheating in any of the exams will automatically
receive a letter grade of F in the course.

Learning Disability: Students with a learning disability: please feel free to talk to me about it.
