Brochure
Description:
A two sided, folding brochure.
Date:
August 9, 2014
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130, Section 10
Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Learn how to wrap text around an image.
Use paragraph styles in InDesign.
Process:
I first set up an offset fold design in Adobe InDesign. I felt this would lend the best
to the brochure I wanted to design. I then did a shapes map to play around with
placement.
I then chose the photo I wanted to use for the text wrap. Using Photoshop, I used
the quick selection tool to select just the doll from the image. I then used the
refine mask dialogue box to smooth, feather, shift edge, and make sure I got the
dolls hair and the hair on the tail of the dog she is holding. I then placed the doll
into InDesign where I used the text wrap option to wrap my text around the alpha
channel of the image. I created my logo in Illustrator using the pen tool.
I placed the logo into my InDesign file on the back cover and changed the color to
yellow to fit into my color scheme. I placed the rest of my photos in the InDesign
file and created my text boxes, using the text wrap tool to link them all together.
Business Card
Description:
Matching letterhead and business card designed using a personally created logo.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign
Process:
I came up with the company I wanted to make a business card and stationary for.
I created a logo that I liked on paper and digitally converted it using Illustrator. I
really played with the company name and finally settled on it stacking on top of
each other to create an owl body shape under the eyes.
I created the branch and tire swing in Illustrator to use as a watermark for the
stationary. The rope was a beast to create!
I next set up a 2 page 8.5 in x 11 in document in InDesign and imported both the
logo and the watermark.
I wanted to take the light indigo color I used for the owl eyes and use a more
transparent version of it for the background of the stationary. I then made up
some info for the owner of the Little Owl Tree house Company. Finally, I shrunk
everything down to fit on the business card.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator.
Process:
First I created a bow, to use in all three logos, using the pen tool and the ellipse
tool. I then chose two contrasting fonts for each of the three logos.
For the first logo I used the bow in place of an L. I then did an Internet search
for curly cues to get some idea of what I wanted and then used the pen tool to
create my own curly swirl for my second logo. For the last logo I created a braid
using the pen tool and used my already created bow to finish it.

Event Ad
Description:
A color full-bleed event ad to promote a fund-raiser using only Microsoft Word and
a scanner.
Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130, Section 10
Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word
HP Scanner
Objectives:
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Use text boxes for layout in Word.
Insert and edit images in Word.
Process:
I first found an image from and scanned it. I then used a Word image effect to
delete the background so that the plate of salad was more prominent. I then used
the Word color selection tool to pull out the purple from the plate and the lime from
one of the lettuce leaves. I then used those colors to create color blocks so that
the gold I chose to go with them would stand out more.
I chose to use a script font for the title because I felt it lent itself well to the literacy
theme. I then chose a sans serif font to contrast the script and create variety. The
last touch was to use Word to create a separation piece that would allow a break
for the eye from the green and purple.

Montage
Description:
An inspirational montage made by the blending of two or more images, and the
use of typography.
Date:
May 31, 2014
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130, Section 10
Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn to manage Photoshop layers.
Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.
Process:
I found a quote that I liked. I searched my personal images for pictures that would
work with the quote and found what I needed. I searched on the Internet for a
stock image for the background and came away with lots of choices.
Using Photoshop, I made the background image 8.511 and did some color
manipulations to make the color exactly what I wanted. I placed the image of my
husband and I and applied a mask to it. With black paint and a 100% opacity,
soft-edged brush, I painted away the hard image edges. With a larger black brush
at 30% opacity and 30% flow, I blended farther into the image, so it looks like we
were blending into the barn background.
I repeated the process with the cracked egg picture. I added the quote and
varied the last word to add emphasis, using a drop shadow on that word to add
emphasis.

Cannon EOS 60D
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Size and crop the image.
Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels.
Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image.
De-saturate the selected portion of the image.
Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.
Process:
I chose a color scheme that I thought went with the client vision I made up. Then
I captured a quality image, in front of my home, with my Cannon EOS 60D. I then
brought the photo into Photoshop and used these specific editing techniques:
levels, sharpness, saturation, and color balance. Then I designed a 8.5 x 11
composition using my color scheme, the photo I took, my color and color scheme
names, and some color swatches. I started with adding circles because I felt the
circles created whimsy without being childish. After getting critiques I decided to
add some rectangles to replicate the rectangular image. I feel like the finished
piece is what I envisioned to begin with.

TextWrangler
W3 HTML Validator
Photoshop.
Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a
target audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.
Process:
I created this web page using only TextWrangler. I have a had a few interactions
with HTML and CSS and it was nice to use it in a simple format where many of
the trickiest variables were removed. I first wrote all my HTML code and validated
it using the http://www.W3.org HTML validator. Then I used the provided CSS
document and changed some elements to make the web page more my own. To
create the color scheme I opened my logo in Photoshop and used the eye dropper
tool to extract the exact color. I changed the fonts to Janda Elegant Handwriting
and Palatino Linotype.
Flier

Black & White promotional flier to promote a graduate leadership conference.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130, Section 10

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep
links intact.
Process:
I first created four sketches of four different designs. I chose my favorite and used
it as a template to make a digital copy of my favorite sketch in InDesign.
After I had made the rough outline of the digital copy, I retrieved the logo, photo,
and body copy from the given links. After I had added those to my design, I was
ready to be get critiqued. I got my husband and neighbor, as well as a fellow
classmate, to critique my design and they gave me some really good advice.
After hearing the critiques I made some important modifications and I feel like the
design is better because of them.
