Narratives for ENDRP projects in Trincomalee

1. Periyakulam Irrigation scheme


Periyakulam Irrigation scheme is situated at Periyakulam village in Kuchchaveli DS
division in Trincomalee district. During the 2010 year flood, this tank has been severely
damaged. Farmers suffered a lot because of lack of adequate water for their cultivation.
Under ENDRP project, an allocation of 13 Mn has been spent for strengthening of
Periyakulam Irrigation scheme (Periyakulam and Pokkankulam) during the period of
2012 to 2013. After rehabilitation of this scheme, water could be stored in the full supply
level. This scheme irrigates more than 310 acres (specified command area is 310 acres)
for paddy cultivation. About 300 people including 76 farm families are directly getting
benefits. Fishing is the secondary activities of this tank. Around 20 fishing families are
getting direct benefits from this tank. It is a source of water for animals. People are
getting very good yield (2.2 Mt to 3.0 Mt per acre) and their living standards are
increasing step by step because of their irrigated agriculture activities. Direct and
indirect 65 employment opportunities per day are generated. Besides, this tank bund is
the access to Periya Enpuriki tank. Public have very good access road to Periya Enpuriki
tank and linking with other places for their day to day activities (Bund is used as a road
also). This scheme has been opened very successive manner with participation of
political leaders including Hon. Governor, EP.

2. Galmitiya Irrigation scheme
Gamittiyawa irrigation scheme is situated in Galmittiyawa village in Thampalagamam DS
division in Trincomalee district. During 2010 flood, this scheme had been severely
hampered and narrowly safeguarded. Without a proper spill for this scheme, Irrigation
officials suffered a lot for the sustainability of this tank. Fortunately, under the funding
of ENDRP, about 8 Mn has been spent for the construction of a new spill, access road to
spill and access road diversion anicut during the period of 2012-2013. After the
rehabilitation of this scheme, the sustainability and the safeguard of the bund and
scheme is assured. More than 642 acres (Specified command area is 642 acres) of fertile
paddy land could be irrigated without any shortage of water. Excess water for an extent
of 300 ac.ft is given to Kudagalmittiyawa (minor irrigation scheme) for the livelihood of
farmers living in other part of this scheme. 1030 people of 200 farm families are direly
getting benefits and 20 fishing families are directly depend on this scheme for their
livelihood. Farmers are getting very good yield and the average yield is 2.5 to 3.0 Mt per
acres. The farmers are very happy now and their living standards are increased.
Employment opportunities in agriculture for both direct and indirect opportunities were
able to reduce the poverty, food security and other social inequality in this region. Hon
Governor has opened this scheme with large public gathering with the participation of
political leaders.

3.Paravipanchan Anicut
This anicut is situated in Saliyapura village in Thampalagamam Divisional secretariat
area in Trincomalee district. Farmers of Paravipanchan - Saliyapura area suffered due to
lack of water for their livelihood during the last 2-3 decades. They requested to construct
an anicut across the main channel of Paravipanchan River. Flood water was damaged
their land and dwelling places. Construction of this Anicut had been envisaged to get the
benefits of 125 acres of new land for irrigation purpose for the benefits of 70 families at a
cost of 6.0 Mn during the period of 2012 to 2013. Having completed this project, farmers
are very happy, they are getting very good yield and employment opportunities. This
project has increased the water level in this area and dry area has begun as green in this
area.
