Steps for filing returns online (e-filing)

Steps:
1) Create account on income tax site using your PAN number:
https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/register.do?screen=registerPage1

2) Login using your newly created account:
https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/login.do
3) Go to E-filing section and download software (PDF or excel utility).


Use ITR-1 if you have (we all mostly will be using this)
1) Income from Salary/Pension
2) Income from Other Sources (only Interest Income or Family Pension)

4) Use the Utility to generate your returns (I have used PDF for demo)
a. First name
b. Middle name
c. Last name
d. PAN
e. Flat / Door / Building
f. DOB (DD/MM/YYYY)
g. Road/Street/Post Office
h. Area/Locality
i. Employer Category (Other)
j. Town/City/District
k. State
l. Pin code
m. Sex
n. Email id (important)
o. Mobile No
p. Income Tax Ward / Circle (You can find out this by clicking on Know you jurisdiction on income tax site)

q. Return filed under Section (Use 11 - u/s 139(1) if you are filing for this year voluntarily
before getting notice from IT Office). If filing for last year different section applies.
r. Whether Original or Revised return? (Original default selected)
s. Residential Status (Resident)
t. Income and deductions:
i. Income chargeable under the Head Salaries(Salary/ Pension)- (find this in your Form 16)
i. Income chargeable under the Head House Property' ( enter - ve sign in case of loss,
if any)
ii. Income chargeable under the Head 'Other Sources' (enter -ve sign in case of loss, if
any)
u. Deductions under chapter VI A (fill up as per your Form-16 like 80c, 80D etc..)
v. Tax Computation:
i. Tax Payable on Total Income (Copy paste from Form-16)
ii. Education Cess, including secondary and higher secondary cess on 8 (Copy paste from Form-16)
Note: Total Tax and Interest Payable should match with your Form-16 if you
havent paid additional tax.
w. Refund:
i. Enter your Bank Account number
ii. Select Yes if you want your refund by direct deposit into bank account, select No if you want
refund by cheque (select Yes if you have refund)
iii. Fille MICR Code if refund is there.
x. Details of Tax Deducted at Source from Salary [As per Form 16 issued by Employer(s)]
i. Copy paste details from Form-16 for (TAN, Name of Employer, Income and TAX
deducted)
y. Fill up Verification section and generate XML.
i. And click on Check form. When all cleared
ii. click on Export to XML
iii. Save file on your computer.
5) Submit return:
a. Go to Submit Return section on IT site.
https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/uploadXML.do?assyr=2011 (be sure you are
logged on to site before clicking on the link)

b. Select Form Name (ITR-1)
c. Do you want to Digitally Sign the File (NO)
d. Click Next

e. Select and upload XML you created in step 4.y

f. Once it is submitted make sure to download the PDF file on the same page. You will also
get the file through e-mail.
g. Take a print out of the file and sign it
h. Mail it to income tax office within 120 days.

You are done!
