Notes
There are a variety of different ways of connecting the Mitsubishi A series range of PLCs to a
Westermo GD-01 modem. These include;
Via an E series HMI (Ver 6.10)
Via C24 card
Once a connection has been established to a remote PLC, GX IEC Developer can be used in the
normal way i.e. upload, download, monitor or online edit (no online edit via C24 card).
When using a modem connection there will be a noticeable increase in the time taken to carry
out any operation, compared to a direct cable link. These delays are considerably longer when
using GSM communications, this is still quicker than driving 400 miles to make a 2 line change in
the PLC code.
Please note: Due to restrictions in the E-Terminal (Ver 6.10 Build 120) protocol and timing
constraints within GX-Developer (Ver 8.03D) it is not possible to use GSM modems with these
products.
A dialup connection to a remote site can be made using MX Configurator MC (available from
Mitsubishi) or Windows Hyper Terminal. The Dialing functions within GX-IEC can be problematic
and give unreliable results, therefore has not been covered in this application note.
Note: The GD-01 requires a SIM card and a Normal Data Number NOT an ISDN Data
Number to operate. The data number is obtained from the network provider once the SIM card
has been registered. Some networks such as Vodafone allow data numbers on pay as you go
SIM cards others do not. Please check with your Service Provider.
Some international roaming agreements between the mobile operators DO NOT allow data
numbers to roam, only voice numbers. As a general rule it is simpler and the call costs are lower
if you obtain a SIM card in the destination country. Use the following WEB address to locate the
mobile providers in the destination country www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtml
Westermo can supply;
Vodafone Pay as you go SIM card (part No: 9504-1001) . It is advised that these SIMs should be
used for testing only.
Orange Data only Contract SIM cards (part No: 9504-1002)

E-Designer Peripheral Communication Configuration
The following changes should be made to the E-terminal communication set-up to allow the
modem to be used for access to the PLC or the E Terminal.
NOTE
The HMI Port Peripheral configuration can be changed
using the SETUP menu on the HMI. The RS-232
port and E-Designer port should be set to 9600 8,n,1
The HMI Tools RS-232 port parameters
should be set to 9600,8,N,1. Higher port
speeds can be selected if desired.
GX IEC Developer Setup
When GX IEC is used in conjunction with the GD-01 GSM modem, it will be necessary to make
the following changes to the protocol configuration.
1. Select Online
2. Select Transfer Setup
3. Select Port the following window will open

GD-01 & MX Configurator MC
The MX Configurator MC, available from Mitsubishi, can be used to make the changes listed
below automatically. This program is far easier for those who unfamiliar with Hyper Terminal or
AT commands.
GD-01 AT commands Using Windows Hyper Terminal.
The GD-01 at the remote location will require a string of AT commands. To enter the commands
first open a HyperTerminal session set for 9600 8,N,1 and connect a 9 way Male to 9 way
Female ( Westermo part number MC9-9) lead between the GD-01 serial port and the laptop/PC
serial port.
Ensure that the GD-01 is powered on and type the AT command string shown below, followed by
a carriage return.
In the following command string 0 = ZERO
AT&FE0V0Q1&D0+IPR=9600;+IFC=0,0;S0=1;+WRST=1,"024:03";&W
The GD-01 will seem to not respond to the above string. This is because the string contains
commands that will suppress any response messages and turn off the local echo from the GD-
01. Type the following AT command followed by a carriage return.
AT&V
The above characters will not be displayed when they are typed as the echo is turned off.
The GD-01 will list out the current working parameters as detailed below;
The modem should now be power cycled and connected to the C24 card on the PLC. An
attempt can now be made to connect to the modem and establish a connection to the
PLC.
See the Mitsubishi Hyper Terminal application note if you are unsure of how to to this or
use MX Configurator MC to establish a connection.
