Introduction
The KITZ interface units provide
protocol conversion between K-Bus,
the communication medium for
Courier compatible devices, and
IEC870 frame format data. It provides
a serial connection (RS232/IEC870)
which enables a master station
(typically a personal computer)
running Courier software to
communicate with slave devices.
The KITZ can be used to implement an
integrated protection and control
system utilising the serial
communications facility of relays.
Courier, the communication language
for GEC ALSTHOM relays, provides
access to relay menus allowing the
user to read, change and control
relay functions. Courier is based on a
master-slave system whereby relays

Interface Units

only respond when requested to do so
by the master PC. All information is
stored in the relays to form a
distributed database which, combined
with the generic nature of Courier,
provides for ongoing relay
developments without the need for
software updates.
Devices are linked using K-Bus which
consists of a screened twisted pair of
wires, an arrangement developed for
communicating in electrically hostile
environments. Up to 32 devices can
be connected in parallel on a single
spur up to a maximum length of 1 km.
Models Available

Application
KITZ 101/102
The KITZ 101/102 interface unit
facilitates communications between
K-Bus which links Courier compatible
devices and the serial port of a PC.
Alternatively the KITZ 101/102 may
be connected via modems and a
telephone network for remote access
to devices. The KITZ 101/102 may
also be used for interfacing K-Bus with
remote terminal units (RTUs) forming
part of Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition (SCADA) systems having
Courier language capability.
The KITZ 101/102 interface unit
offers protocol conversion between
K-Bus and IEC870 formats, and will
typically be applied in substations
where a number of K-Bus compatible
relays are operating. This provides
access to all of the functions of
connected relays from a master
station, such as a PC. Relay setting
changes, configuration, disturbance
and event records and remote circuit
breaker operations are functions
available using K-Bus.
It should be noted that protection
tripping and blocking signals are not
routed via the K-Bus and KITZ
interface units. Separate conventional
wiring is used for these functions.
Remote tripping and closing signals,
where available as part of integrated
control systems, are transmitted via
K-Bus and KITZ.
Typical applications are shown in
Figures 2 and 3.
The KITZ 101/102 interface unit
provides protocol conversion which
allows for relay communications with
SCADA systems. Intelligent SCADA
systems capable of protocol
conversion may communicate with
relays using Courier language via the
KITZ 101/102 connected to an
RS232 port of a substation RTU.
Subject to the capabilities of the
SCADA system, all relay functions can
be accessed via the KITZ 101/102.
KITZ 101/102 application with a
SCADA system is shown in Figure 2
below.
SCADA systems unable to
communicate using Courier language
require an additional protocol
converter between the substation RTU
and the KITZ 101/102 interface unit.
KITZ 103
The KITZ 103 enables the Optimho
(LFZP) distance protection relay to be
interfaced onto K-Bus. The unit
provides a partial Courier interface
enabling particular information from
the Optimho relay to be accessed, in
a similar manner to K-Series relays.
Additionally, the unit provides
protocol conversion of Opticom
messages, enabling remote
communication with the relay over
K-Bus using a modified version of the
Opticom communication software
package.
Typical application of the KITZ 103 is
shown in Figure 4.

Functions
KITZ 101/102
Protocol Conversion
The KITZ interface units main function
is to convert between K-Bus message
data and IEC870 format for
communications with a PC.
Modem Interface
For applications where a master
station is located remotely from the
devices, communication between the
master station and KITZ 101/102
may be established via the telephone
network and modems.
The KITZ 101/102 may be
configured to support modem
communications
Real Time Clock (RTC)
The KITZ 101/102 provides optional
date and time tagging to received
K-Bus messages. When activated, the
KITZ 101/102 appends an IEC870
format date and time tag to received
K-Bus messages containing an
unsynchronised millisecond timer
count. This allows accurate sequence
of events to be established despite
possible transmission delays on the
IEC870 network. The real time clock
is backed up by an internal battery.

The KITZ 103 also acts as a protocol
converter, automatically converting
messages containing an Opticom
identifier. Note that the Opticom
identifier is automatically added to
messages transmitted from the PC
using Opticom 100 version 5.00 or
Opticom 140 version 3.00 and later.
This feature therefore provides access
to the relay over K-Bus via the
Opticom communication software,
including the ability to change relay
settings
KITZ 103
The function of the KITZ 103 is
different to that of the KITZ 101/102.
The KITZ 103 provides a partial
Courier interface for the Optimho
relay, enabling certain information
from the relay to be accessed in a
similar manner to that of the K-Series
relays. The information includes fault
records, measurement values and the
ability to change the relay active
settings group. The KITZ 103 unit
automatically logs on to the Optimho
relay it is connected to on startup, and
remains logged on in order to detect
and extract new fault records and to
extract measurement values. The unit
can be logged off by the user through
the Courier interface, or by pressing
the RESET button on the relay front
panel. The unit automatically
generates a Courier event, which can
be displayed on the PC, when a new
fault record is extracted. The event is
created using the time/date and
description of the extracted fault.

Hardware Description
The KITZ interface unit is housed in a
case of dimensions 57.5mm x 163 mm
x 216 mm deep, available as desk
top model KITZ 101 or back of panel
mounted as KITZ 102.
A 16 bit microprocessor controls the
software and communications
functions of the KITZ.
The communications functions are
performed by a Serial
Communications Controller (SCC).
The KITZ contains two channels, a
K-Bus channel and an RS232/IEC870
channel, each able to receive and
transmit via their respective
communications port. An RS232 port
and K-Bus terminals are located on the
rear panel.
User Interface
Front Panel User Interface
The front plate contains 5 LEDs to
indicate power on, as well as
transmit and receive status of both
the K-bus and the RS232/IEC870
channels. Eight option switches for
local configuration of the KITZ are
also located on the front plate.
Communications Protocol
Courier Access Software is provided
with the KITZ 101/102 to allow
access to the relays to read and
change settings. Additional software
entitled Protection Access Software
and Toolkit (PAS&T) which provides
access to disturbance and event
records, as well as some additional
relay functions, is also available.
Alternatively the Courier
Communications application guide
defines Courier communications
sufficiently to allow software to be
written for specific applications,
typically for communications using
existing SCADA systems.
